Fourth line LW. Gritty.  Can still score points.  Mentor role

I also see them going after David Perron or Pat Maroon.  I wouldn't be surprised if they showed interest in Scotty Hartnell.  Character guy.

  2. Why does this feel like Okposo 2.0 is about to happen? So much for Botterill and saying he doesn't wanna build a team through FA

Exactly.  Okposo and Moulson have both proven that big money deals to players entering their early 30's are no Bueno.

I'm sure JVR is looking for something in the range of 6 years.  That would make him 35 at the tail end.

Moulson has 22 goals and 31 assists in 176 games after he turned 32 and hasn't netted an NHL point in 18 months.

Still giving Okposo the benefit of the doubt after his concussion.  But he's only scored over 20 goals once in the last four years at $7 mil AVV.

In 3-4 years we may have another buyout situation on our hands

  3. Sabres finish deadlast this year and Housley will be fired, fans will be outraged, and season tickets will be availalbe for cups of coffee.

    No way that happens again.

We don't need Jack Hughes to be successfull, and honestly we have enough talent now to lead us into the playoffs within the next two years.

    Leave that for Arizona

  4. We have never seen a Sabres defense when Risto wasn’t virtually a one man D group. Adding Scandella helped some last year as it gave him a decent partner for a change, but has played nearly every hard minute for this team for 3 straight season. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see what he can do with a competent group around him featuring Scandella, Guhle, Dahlin and Parayko, instead of McCabe, Bogo, Baloo and Antipin?

Agreed.  I don't think you can consider a 6'4 218 lb, 23 year old who has only missed 16 games the last four seasons and has led your defense in scoring playing insane minutes as over rated.

The only possible issue is him buying into Housley's system.  With that said you pair him with a guy like Dahlin and he turns from the Dman your hoping carries the play to the guy who lays back and covers the zone while allowing Dahlin to do his thing.  That might be a better role for him.

  5. Okposo was on track for 23 goals/ 32 Assists / 55 points over 80 games before his injury in 2017.  That's consistent with his last season on the Island.

Last year I was labeling Okposo as one of the biggest busts due to his plus/minus.  But after the locker room clean out interview where he said he was just getting his game back after the devastating injury I think the guy deserves some slack.  He did come on the last part of the season.   This year he will have a full summer of training (he didn't have that last year due to injury) so I'm willing to give him one more year.

With that said, for me Okposo's situation gives me pause when it comes to FA like JVR.  He's 29 and probably looking for a similar 6 year deal.  Too many inflated contracts with players in their 30's when they lose speed is no Bueno.  JVR may have 3-4 good season left, and once it  goes down hill it's another contract we'll have to carry.

This was from Elliot Freedman's 30thoughts

The Charging Buffalo Retweeted Elliotte Friedman

Buffalo is in on Goalie, Carter Hutton from STL. Also mentions STL as a team circling around ROR as we have expected. They were hoping they’d get a meeting with Tavares and didn’t, looking for a C.

    Per LeBrun

It should be noted, there is no deal in place and nothing can become official until Sunday; however, Hutton -- who is considered all but out the door in St. Louis -- appears to be in line to take over the No. 1 job for the Sabres. Initial indications out of the Queen City had Linus Ullmark taking over for the departing Robin Lehner. If the 31-year-old Hutton does land in Buffalo, it also likely means the end of Chad Johnson's second stint with the club.

  7. Hunwick would have been our 3rd highest scoring Dman two years ago, and our 4th highest scorer last season (and he only played half the season last year). He's also played 26 playoff games and won a cup.

Obviously his salary was part of the reason why Pens made the deal.  If some of our young D steps up I see him being moved. We haven't even begun FA yet so he could be a throw in on a deal for a team that needs D depth.

Plus, there's always a playoff team who is looking to bolster their D due to injuries or whatever at the trade deadline.

  8. Tampa Bay announcing they won't be resigning Chris Kunitz.

13 goals and 29 points in 80 games last year for Lightening.  Former 30 goal scorer spent 9 years with Pens.

That has Bots written all over it.

He's 38 and will probably play the 3rd line, but he's someone I can see Bots bring in as a culture guy.

(His 29 points would have ranked him 8th in team scoring last year behind Poms).  That's how bad we were.

Chia wants Risto for #10? If I’m Botterill, I tell Chiarelli the deal is Ristolainen and #32 for pick #10 and forward prospect Kailer Yamamoto, who was Mittelstadt’s linemate at WJC in Buffalo

No way Risto for just 10th pick.

I like Adam Boqvist at 10 though if you add Yamamoto, who CM is used to playing with.  Boqvist seems to have the perfect game for Housley's system, which I get the sense Risto resisted a little last season.  Below is a great piece on Boqvist.

Ken Campbell in The Hockey News Podcast Mock Draft Traded ROR and First Overall for Karlsson and the Fourth Overall Pick

Ken Campbell needs to quit taking whatever drugs he is currently on.

That is the worse mock trade I have ever seen.  The difference between Dahlin and the 4th pick is canyon like.   ROR for Karlsson straight up....maaayyybe.

Would Prefer #3 overall and Drouin for ROR

  11. This is Walter Payton & Jerry Rice kind of work ethic.

While other players are vacationing with their families or lifting at their local gyms, this guy is out in Spain at one of the most challenging gyms killing it each and every day.

Besides his immense talent, only being 23 years old, and signed under a very friendly contract, this guy is driven to get better like few in the game.

You just don't trade players like that.  Give him another year or two and his work ethic will be infectious with the rest of the team.

  12. Sharks used this as a tool to gain picks and space.  Smart GM play by Wilson.

Hoffman right now is a hot potato.  Read an article in the FLA news paper that Tallon spoke with Panther players, Chris Pronger and Bryan McCabe (advisers and players development) about the move and they all signed off on it.  Tallon also spoke in length with Hoffman.  They must feel comfortable with the whole thing and honestly his Fiancee at this point has an extremely short leash.

That is if she is still around after the investigation is over.

  13. The Sabres acquired Fasching when the heavy LA Kings style of hockey was en vogue.  That gave way in recent years to a faster game involving speedier players that has left teams like LA behind (which is why their GM was canned because he was unwilling to change.)

To get a young Dman like Hickey along with an extra piece that can help the Amerks is a win-win for a guy that Bot's probably wasn't going to qualify anyways.

My only issue is that doesn't keep me from wanting them to acquire a Dougie Hamilton or Karlsson still.  Adding one of those two along with Risto and Dahlin would be pure gold.
