Problem with all these is that it's getting to the point where this rumor has come from 1 article as I understand it. Then other "journalists" begin adding their spin to this single speculation piece. It's lazy.

Jim kelley was the king of this.  Unnamed source was reporter covering other team.  He was source for other writter.  Neither had real info, but they had source.

Yeah, scouts may talk like this, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to use those terms for those player groups.  It just seems like an antiquated holdover from a time when the league was much smaller.

With these definitions, you apparently don’t even need a 1C quality player on your team in order to win a Cup.  Neither WCF teams have one.

It's one way to go.  The other, of course, being starting him at 4C with veteran wingers.

It comes down to line usage.  If you lean on lines 3/4 to take defense zone starts, you probably want to shelter the kid with more offensive zone starts, so you put him top six, but there's no way you lean on him to be the 2C.  If you chessmatch the lines and shelter line 4 with high OZ% and low quality of competition, you can put Cozens at 4C with support.

Looking at this past year's usage, Girgensens-Larsson-Okposo got the defensive zone starts, and there didn't seem to be much chessmatch-ing against different competition for forwards (although it looks like Oloffson-Eichel-Reinhart attracted the opponent's best players slightly more often).  Those two lines also received the most zone start bias, defensively and offensively, respectively.  The other lines either got mixed usage over the season or weren't biased at all.  If RK runs it the same way again, expect Cozens in at middle-six wing with not much competition sheltering and probably not a whole lot of zone start bias either.

Playing 8 to 10 minutes with crappy players is not a good idea for a skilled scorer.  The sabres are not overflowing with great players.

I’m not saying that elite C’s or Franchise QBs don’t exist.

Im saying that it is silly to say that Trent Dilfer wasn’t a starting QB, because scouts say there are only 10 starter level QBs in the league.

Would it make sense to call the 10 franchise QBs, starting QBs, and call the next 20 best QBs backups?  Because that’s basically what’s happening with 1Cs here.

Im saying that some of those very good, but not elite C’s are also 1C caliber players.  Just not elite 1Cs.

If you mean elite C, just say elite C.  Not all good 1C qualify as elite (top 10-12), but that doesn’t mean that they

u r comparing apples and oranges.

Go with your definitions.  Find a scout to argue with.  You will talk to their back as they walk away.

This seems kinda like getting hung up on semantics, innit?

I generally agree with the points you've been making in this thread, but the bolded is a strange, and unwelcome, directive to issue on a message board.

    Point taken

I am not the originator of what I relayed regarding player rankings.  Arguing with me is pointless.  I have no dog in fight.  This is how the industry discusses players.

    How does size matter.

The data shows it does.  How many players below 5'8" are there.  Not many.  Small guys used to be able to hook and hold, but not anymore.  U have to be off the charts in other areas to make it as small player.

Size is not just height either.  Mitts is what 6'?  He is beanpole though with no explosiveness or just plain strength.

It’s fine to say the Sabres #1 is not an NHL starter quality player.  But somewhere out there, there are the 31 best goalies in the league.  Those are the starting caliber players.  There are not 10 #1 quality goalies, and 50 #2 quality goalies.

that is exactly how scouts refer to them.  The sabres do not have a number one goalie.  They have a goalie who plays majority, but scouts would call him a number 2.  Hutton is not even that.

  7. 14 minutes ago, Curt said:

See above comment.  Whichever 31 Cs are the best, those are the #1Cs.  There are not 12 #1Cs, 30 #2Cs, and 45 #3Cs...........That’s just arbitrary.

to scouts there are.  They rank by productivity, ability, size etc...  big difference between Crosby and whomever is playing first line for last place team.

Yeah but both Malkin and Crosby are 1st line centres. I agree with Curt. People expect a 50 point centre to be an average third line centre because of this. And that just isn’t the case.

Glad to hear a positive view on Cozens. Although I think I’d welcome someone having one about Casey 😛

You nailed it with this.  Both of them are number ones who are on same team.  It is measure of productivity, skill level, etc...  not the minutes you play.

I did ask about casey.  Mitts has not shown anything to make him think he will be NHL regular.

Cozens projects out to a 60+ point center in his prime with 2 way ability. So high end 2nd line center. He could have a few years over 70 points but I think we should expect 25-30g and 30-35a in his prime (which is 2-4 years away).

    Which is fantastic.....

This drives me completely crazy.  Do words have no meaning!?  I reject this purposeful misuse of words.

If you just used the words that you really mean, you wouldn’t need to write this disclaimer in your post.

This is how scouts refer to players.  There are few first line players.  Lots of second line players, most of league is third liners.  Don't argue with me.  I am following how scouts refer to players.

  10. Spoke to fiend who is a senior amateur scout for NHL team:

His take on Cozens is he is good player with definite chance to be a good second line center in the league.  He is big, good skills, very good skater, and can make plays at top speed.

I have been very hesitant to get on Dylan bandwagon, but was happy to hear this.

FYI: there are only 10-15 true first line centers in the league.  When the scout says he could be a good second line center that is a big compliment.  Like saying a pitcher could be a number two starter.  There are only 5-10 true number one starters in baseball.  The aces.

Second line centers can play in any situation, and will be among top 20% scorers depending on PP time.

  11. Mitts has not shown the strength or skating ability to think he can contribute.  He does not have high end burst or the top end speed he would need to go along with the lack of a big body.

Thompson is so big it makes sense it will take him longer to put it together.  His development was pushed back a year by staying in nhl and not playing. He was clearly not ready for NHL, but he was kept around not playing in games. It was upsetting that in a year he could have played in Rochester, he got hurt.

I have zero hope mitts becomes regular NHL'er.  I have guarded optimism that Thompson could.  He should spend half the year at least in Rochester.  he needs to learn how to use his big shot, with his skating ability and length he could be a competent penalty killer as well.  He needs low pressure reps to become better.

Immaturity and lacking a work ethic is not a new thing when describing Sabres young prospects/players. It is in fact an all too frequent recurrent theme. Casey came in as a guy told he was going to be great and was slotted in to be instantly great and nowhere along the way does anyone seem to have thought he needed to be taught a work ethic first. So did we ruin him or was he never going to be anything who can say for sure but he definitely needs to change if he is to be anything at all.

Dahlin came in as a hard worker and dedicated player wanting to develop. Is he still? I dunno. If we ruin him you really got to wonder.

and lastly Cozens, I know that guy has all the competitive attitude and work ethic you can ask for in any player. If we ruin him there's no hope ever.

How do you know that about Cozens?  U do not have any idea

Cost isn't my biggest concern.  Just ease of use.

And that still doesn't tell me HOW to watch it on Amazon.  The games are listed there but they are like in the future so I don't know how it's all gonna work.

Get the MLB package.  You can watch it on phone, tablet, Laptop, Roku and anything else.  Check blackout rules though.  if you can get the team on local cable it will be blacked out.  I live in Indiana and watch the Yankees.  I am blacked out when they play either Chicago team, the Tigers and the Reds...

    He doesn't.

He does however, fix a hole in their roster that no one really talks about:

    • They have just two defencemen under the age of 29
    • They have only three defencemen under contract for next season
    • They have no right-handed defencemen under contract for next season.

We know the Lightning like big, strong defencemen and we have been told they have inquired about Risto before.

    Your point still stands.

    ***

For sake of argument: Johnson and Killorn for Risto (flavour with picks and prospects as needed)

    • addresses the Sabres 2nd line issues
    • addresses the Lightning's need for a youngish RHD
    • gives the Bolts an extra $4 million or so under the cap

What is Johnson contract?  I think this is the biggest issue.  we have enough crap contracts.

Well kinda. Samson was better in his draft year than Cozens but Cozens was better in his D1 year than Sam. Sam needed to and did work on his 2-way game a bunch during his D1 year (as well as skating and gaining strength).

Cozens is a very different style than Sam. Sam is very much about being cerebral and setting up teammates and sliding into spots while making sure he is defensive sound. Cozens is more about driving the net and being a shot guy although he can pass as well. Cozens skating is faster/quicker than Sams which helps with this.

His ceiling is a #1 center but he could certainly only turn into a #3 center.

#1 centers are like #1 pitchers in Baseball.  There are maybe 10 true #1 ace type pitchers in Baseball.  Same with #1 centers.  Mackinon, Macdavid, Mathews, Eichel, Crosby blanking on the maybe 3 or 4 others.  Barkov is close.  Definition is you can play them against any other lines or dman and they still dominate, and they make others around them into very good players.  Crosby makes guys who are average millions every year.  Toews is no longer a #1 as he has lost speed and cannot keep up with the above and never was a power guy.  Bergeron is not #1. very good but not at the above's level.  Stamkos is not as he needs good wingers, and if he does not score he does nothing else to help.

Cozens has zero chance of reaching that level.  None at all.  Wish i was wrong.

There are several boards that talk about the idea but I wanted to start one specifically to get responses on what players fans would want to see in these two roles next year.

In your response of player wanted for position, what would Buffalo have to give up to obtain said player?

    2C options-

Sean Monahan, Max Domi, Tomas Hertl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Kyle Turris, Brock Nelson, Anthony Cirelli, Eric Stall, Adam Henrique, Ryan Johansen

    3C options-

Nick Bonino, Adam Gaudette, Derrick Brassard, Andrew Copp, Derek Ryan, Chris Tierney, Radek Faska

without including current contract situations of the proposed these are pointless discussions.  Turris and johansen have contracts that are skinner like.

Way to much.  Cozens is a stud in the making.  And then throw an 8th in an extremely deep draft?

You can't make trades based on fear of failure.  Cirelli could come to Buffalo and turn into a Vessey.  Then what?

Keep Cozens.  Draft a stud at 8.

dont get the Cozens love.  He is doing what he should be for a top 10 draft pick in juniors.  His high ceiling is number two center.  More likely becomes a number three center.

  18. nothing in his game says he will be an nhl center.  Foot speed maybe average.  Not strong.  Defensively maybe average.  he would be a very bad matchup against the number one centers in the league.  Very bad.
