  1. There are questions regarding Granato. A team this bad defensively is concerning. Playing good defense is a very coachable "thing." Requiring a commitment from players and holding them accountable.

I think next year is the answer for Granato. We need upgrades to defense and bottom six. More toughness and grit as has been pointed out on this board. I do not think he will prove to be an above average coach though.

We kept Marv Levy after the Super Bowl where he was coaching a team that at every position was better than the Giants. If we would have replaced Levy we would have won a super bowl...

The roster is full of finesse players who can skate, shoot and pass, with many more coming up in the pipeline. But even the biggest and most talented guys are getting pushed around. They are essentially weak. Need to balance the roster out with gritty checkers and guys who can set an example on how to play defensive hockey. Need a policeman or two. Greenway is not it. I'd like to see three new physical defensemen, one #1 goalie with Levi as backup (goodbye UPL and Comrie), and emphasis on the boring things in hockey...defensive structure, responsibility, checking, blocking shots, faceoffs and the penalty kill. So far, these boys have been fed a steady diet of ice cream and cake (shooting and making plays) but they need a basis of meat and potatoes (defensive hockey). Trade some prospects and guys who have grown stale here. Balance the lineup.

by saying Levi should be backup next year is the dumbest thing you will read on this thread. MAybe on the board. Anything else you say is now required to be ignored.

But then what would happen if Pittsburgh also didn't have their 7 game losing streak and a seperate 6 game streak? Ottawa had a 7 game losing streak also. Washington and the Islanders also had a 6 game losing streak, Detroit a 6 game losing streak twice.

I guess my point is a loss is a loss, the order doesn't matter. And if it DOES matter the order (a streak can compound itself), then the same thing applies to other teams.  If instead of a losing streak, you 'give' the Sabres half the available points, then do the same with the other teams around you with their multi-week streaks, and you end up in about the same place in the standings.

dont care about other teams. Talking about SABRES.

  4. I am excited for next year. We will get even younger moving on from okposo and girgensons. As much as I like them personally, we need to toughen and speed up those positions at bottom of forward group.

Sure looks like Kurlich is ready which is amazing given his age.

A darn shame Savoie cannot go to Rochester. What are rules regarding assigning him there? His birthday is too late to start year there. Once he hits right age can we pull him out of juniors and send to Rochester?

I expect a trade for a dman at some point. we have tons of capital to use. both salary cap and prospects. There will be opportunities especially if we use salary cap as part of trade.

    Goalie still makes me nervous.

If we did not have that 8 game losing streak where we did not have a point we would be in playoffs right now. if we pulled 4 points out of 16 available.

  5. If we make playoffs it will not be due to a trade we make unless it is for goalie who goes on a run. We have an elite defenseman, a very good dman, a good dman, an above average dman and the rest are maybe league below avg or average. Our top three matches anyone in hockey.  There is no urgency to make big trade for dman. Wait till offseason and see who comes available.

This has been a fun year. Our goal sb to improve for next year and really go for playoffs. Wait till offseason. That starts with a goalie and continues with need for some sandpaper in lineup as we are easy to play against.

We should also take the second round pick instead of signing Johnson. He would not go in second round of this draft if he was eligible.

I thin the main appeal of Chycrun was the contract. He is not a better player than dahlin or power. Does not bring a skill set we do not have. He will not be on PP or on ice at end of game.

With Ryan Johnson making the list, I can't help but wonder what his status is with the team. There is practically been nothing reported on him.

I think we get second round pick if he does not sign. Good Trade. He is nothing special in College. He is a senior and should be dominating. He is not

The McCabe comparison is way off. Johnson does nothing great and is not physical.

  7. it can be misleading as i could draw it straight back and if dman misses it and opposing winger gets to it then i lose draw. I think it evens out though. The stats confirm the eye test of who is good at draws. The eye test for sabres is we have no one who is even average on draws. Stats back it up.

Interesting to go more in depth on the stats to categorize them as clean win, contested win or Push for example instead of win or loss.

  8. we need centers. Mittlestad is not a good player. too slow, especially when playing center. Thompson and Cousins are unfortunately wingers playing center. People will argue with that but it shows up against good teams with better centers. Neither are top centers in the league. If your argument is Thompson's stats, he plays a ton and is first shooting option on power play. He is going to have good stats. He would be better as winger, no draws, which he is awful at, and not having to go deep in dzone.

We have very good DMan with Samuelsson, Dahlin and Power. Very Good. We were lucky to get Power and Dahlin when we won lottery. Outside of Mcdavid, Edmonton picked first three other times for 2 not great forwards and one awful one. They never were able to get the great puck moving d man stud that we have 2 of now. If Edmonton had a Dahlin from a draft they would be cup challengers.

Are there really any other better locations? As a Canadian, I feel the downtown location is best for the convenience not only for me, but it's central location for most Buffalonians. The restaurant options and general atmosphere of the Canalside area add to the whole gameday experience as well. I love everything about it.

People coming in from the Greater Rochester area might be the only ones to benefit from a more suburban location.

Are there any recent examples of stadiums or arenas moving to the suburbs that proved to be a good financial decision?

Atlanta Braves moved from downtown to location near suburbs and that has worked out great for them. Moved them closer to the fans who are north of Atlanta. That said, makes zero sense to move sabres out of downtown. Bigger question to me is how does buffalo keep Sabres and Bills. I don't think one fortune 500 company is in buffalo anymore. population dropping quickly in whole area. Which would we rather keep? I vote sabres.

  10. Pegulas want to sell team.  They have lost in the neighborhood of 300 million since purchase.  They have cut spending on everything Sabres related.  Scouts, players, Staff, building etc...

If Marine Midland Center is going to get major upgrades it will be taxpayers paying for it. If I was owner in NY state I would make state pay for it too.  Thanks to the union suck up laws in NY it will cost twice as much as it should.  Just like new football stadium.

  11. Did Levi go to scouting combine?  I watched some of his he's when they were on.  He does not seems 6 feet.  If he went to combine we know official number.  Remember the NFL guys that shrank every year once measured?

  12. I was upset about us not signing either.  I know a scout so I asked him about the two not signing.

His reply was it was no loss:

They have Portillo ceiling as nhl backup.  Very inconsistent, bad rebounds and too many soft goals.

Levi is interesting, BUT there is a reason no goalies that small are in NHL.  Goalies in NHL are about positioning and angles.  Geometry is not his friend.  Ceiling is AHL regular.

Before everyone gets upset, this is an actual NHL scout who looked into his teams scouting database for this.

These guys are not Cal Peterson caliber.

  13. Pegulas have lost 300 million in cash in 10 years...  they would sell tomorrow if someone offered 385.  Forbes is wrong every time the try sports valuations.  I hate to even say it on this board, but Sabres to Southern Ontario makes most sense to the league.  The amount of people, money and companies in Southern Ontario dwarfs Buffalo and Western New York.  Over a million people just counting Hamilton and London.  The area is growing while Buffalo is one of the poorest cities in the country and shrinking rapidly in comparison.

  14. they are absolutely trying to sell.  They have lost 300 million since buying Sabres.  Open secret in NHL.  big question is who would buy them.  Scary answer might be no one, and Buffalo cannot support an NHL team financially.  Only reason Bills are still here is due to league revenue sharing...

Problem with all these is that it's getting to the point where this rumor has come from 1 article as I understand it. Then other "journalists" begin adding their spin to this single speculation piece. It's lazy.

Jim kelley was the king of this.  Unnamed source was reporter covering other team.  He was source for other writter.  Neither had real info, but they had source.
