  1. Not sure what's worse, the fact that so many people get upset by the fact somebody said a particular player is doing well, or the fact so many people want so badly to prove a certain player is doing poorly.

    Only in BFLO can so much effort be wasted on a GDT in trying to prove how much one of their players sucks. Sad.

    Nobody is upset that Johnson is playing well. Hell, I wish our whole team was overachieving like he is. But the key word in that sentence is overachieving. He is not, career wise, the player he has been this year. And there's nothing wrong with that.

  2. Doesn't really say much about stats when you're comparing two goaltenders having similar seasons to a Vezina caliber goaltender. It's either a flaw in logic or a flaw in the legitimacy of the stats. The team plays a part in the stats of a goaltender, if you hold those stats in high regard 17th is pretty good considering the first month and also considering he plays on one of the work teams in the league. And when you consider the dysfunction that was the first month, still being able to hold on to an almost 500 record.

    So they're very similar to a Vezina quality starter. Huh, imagine that.

    This is what you get out of that fact stacked post? This is a lost cause. :rolleyes:

  3. Why is goal support and record important for a goalie? They go hand in hand, and really don't dictate anything about his play

    Holy ###### there has to be some sort of Corsi for goalies....yup, here we are.

    http://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/NHL_2016_goalies.html

    Quality Starts and Quality Start %:

    And, hold on to your hats here, cause guess what?  Johnson is below average in BOTH of these categories, ranking 26th in QS, and 46th in QS%. And, wanna know how we know these stats are useful? Because the conventional thinking on who the top goalies in the league are appear at the top of these lists:

    QS:

    Crawford, Schneider, Lundqvist, Holtby, Quick

    QS% gives you a simlar top 5, although I'm only considering those goalies with above 20 GP.

    There's also ASV% (Adjusted Save Percentage)

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=744483

    Who are our top 5 goalies here (played above 1000 minutes):

    http://war-on-ice.com/goalietable.html

    Reimer: ASV% = 95.30, SV% = 95.29 => (closer shots)

    Mrazek: ASV% = 94.61, SV% = 94.79 => (further shots)

    Schneider: ASV% = 93.78, SV% = 94.0 => (further shots)

    Lundqvist: ASV% = 93.85, SV% = 93.99 => (closer shots)

    Luongo: ASV% = 93.47, SV% = 93.94 => (further shots)

    Holtby: ASV% = 93.72, SV% = 93.85 => (closer shots)

    Where is Johnson on this list? 18th. Oddly enough, right ahead of Tuukka Rask

    Johnson: ASV% = 92.25, SV% = 92.54 => (easier shots faced)

    Rask: ASV% = 92.28, SV% = 92.53 => (easier shots faced)

    This also happens to be Rask's worst season he's ever had as a starter I believe, and Johnson's 2nd best

    WC with the post of the year so far. Awesome #fancystats

  4. You don't take recent success into account when determining whether or not a player is worthy of starting?

    He's got a .936 save percentage since 11/1. It's safe to say that's pretty up there among other goaltenders.

    How recent do we want to go here? Lehner has a .949 SV% in his last two starts. And, just for the sake of keeping it fair, CJ has a.967 SV% in his last two, but the difference is basically negligible. Both guys would still be crying out for goal support. You really can't go wrong with either guy at this time, I just personally want to see Lehner as much as possible just to see what we have in him, but he's coming off a major injury so the rest is important for him at this point as well.

  5. Saw Sleep last night in Toronto. Blew almost every band I've ever seen out of the water. Loud and heavy. And good looks on the Power Trip post, their singer Riley is a good friend of mine.

  6. You mean the guy with no wins?

    No, I mean the guy who plays lights out and get no goal support. Can't pin a lack of offense on Lehner. Even that second goal last night, not his fault they left Zetterberg completely alone. Lehner had made almost 40 saves before the first goal. Sabres didn't even manage 20.

  7. After this game I an say at least 3 things for certain. Moulson is done, less than a shell of his former self. I love Lehner, you can tell how badly he wants to win and how badly he wants to validate to the team and fans that he was worth what they gave up. He has been by far the best player on the ice for us the last two games, not even close. And lastly, if this is how Bylsma's team is going to play, I don't want him here. I can't watch a team with our speed and talent just turtle up on defense, dump and chase, and consistently play the most boring game possible just to slow the game down so they only have to "win a period."

    Now all this being said, we've been unlucky with injuries, and based on Lehner's play I actually think we would have more wins so far this season if he hadn't been hurt. The all-star break is a very welcome sight.

  8. True, but he had a lane to see last shot and wiffed, just saying Johnson woulda had that one but maybe not others..,

    And if you look at the replay he was in perfect position to save the initial shot. Not his fault Pysyk got manhandled and it deflected off his hand less than a foot in front of him. Again, just like Johnson said, his saves may not have been by the book but they were there. And if we won the game you would all be praising those same saves as why we were able to stay in the game. We completely turtled in the 3rd period. No offense whatsoever, and that's not on Lehner.

  9. I'm with you LGR. I wasn't paying 100% attention, but a few of Lehner's "incredible saves" were directly related to him flailing around the net in the first place. As I think I said upthread, it reminds me a bit of Ullmark early this year who seems to play out it. Hopefully the game will slow down for Lehner as he gets more comfortable and he'll look more composed.

    See Johnson's post. If the Sabres score that late goal instead of the Avs, we all post about how Lehner bailed us out with some great saves, even with his "flailing". Sure he went down on the first goal, but there was a missed clear by ROR on the rebound.

  10. Good luck to anyone living on the east coast.  Based on the news, I'm assuming you're all going to die tomorrow.

    According to everything I'm seeing the storm is far enough away from Buffalo that we aren't getting hit here. Really hope that ends up being the case.

  11. Contrary to what most will say Lehner was mediocre. He was out of position on several plays because he didn't keep his feet. He had trouble finding the puck in traffic. His rebound control varied from good to terrible. His defense and size bailed him on several chances. Honestly I worry about a team having the book on Lehner because I think it will be traffic and bumping, hold the puck long enough and he'll over react. I wasnt impressed by his performance and think the game really could have ended 4-1 Colorado if they had slightly better shots. Lehner still has a Ways to go. That all said, it's his 3rd game, let's watch and see if he improves.

    :huh:

  12. ###### you Lehner ###### you

    Not on Lehner, at all. From that overhead view you can see he was in position to make the save if it didn't hit Pysyk's hand at the last second. If you want to complain about anything, complain about Bylsma asking his players to turtle and play for OT, instead of staying aggressive in the last minute and keeping the pressure on.
