  1. Just a quick whiskey PSA:

I just bought a bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, and it is NOT good. Lots of harsh, chemical flavor. Sipped alongside standard Buffalo Trace at the same price, and the BT was much, much more enjoyable. And I am not super-picky; I am totally happy with Wild Turkey, Old Forester, and many other low-mid grade offerings.

Interesting. I have heard that Elijah small batch hasn't been as good since they removed the 12 year age statement. I wasn't sure if it was mind tricks from people thinking older whiskey is always better, but you would be the third person to report the newer small batch being less than impressive

  2. The beer thread has been revived, time for the whiskey thread to pick up some steam.

I've made some progress on my whiskey collection. Currently:

    Slane

    Jameson Crested

    Jameson Caskmates

    Angel's Envy

Went to a whiskey bar last night, tried Four Roses Single Barrel and Macallan 12. I enjoyed both, especially Four Roses. That's on my list now to add to the collection.

  3. Ehhhhhhhhhh sure it's a bit personal, what isn't, but this isn't a quibble of the bars or the stores themselves- you're absolutely right, they're just catering to the people. It's the attitude of people, the demand, and attitude/demand are contingent with prevailing trends/beliefs, and in this case, IPAs had the lion's share, and I'm not entirely convinced it's because most people actually prefer them.

I don't believe I'm alone in feeling there was an almost arms race for IPAs to be as hoppy as possible, nigh undrinkable. I know many beer loving friends whose eyes were watering trying piney/cleaning solvent-esque brews in order to explore the genre. I'm not saying there aren't plenty of folks who love that taste, but I think the trend/craze has mellowed out a bit.

I'm just saying, let's have some more love/options for the other types. And to some of the beer snobs I know- IPAs aren't necessarily the pinnacle be all end all of brewing- no need for absolutes. People get verrrry defensive of their favorite brew. Each type can shine in its own way.

Honestly, it's a net positive for beer when a style takes off like IPAs have, even if I hate them. Well, most of them. I've had one or two that didn't make my tongue curl up like an angry fern frond.

Wonder what the next huge trend will be?

This is absolutely true. IPA's took off going from 60 to 80 to 100+ IBU's.

The beer with the highest IBU rating that I like is Smuttynose Robust Porter with a 61 IBU rating. An IPA with the same IBU will make my tongue curl up

  4. I don't think IPA's are boring, I just don't like the flavor. When cutting the grass, I don't like to taste grass clippings in my beer.

Stouts, porters, and ales are my go-to. I like the imperial versions of them, I like when rye is used, and if it's the summer I can go to an amber ale to cut out the body but keep the flavor.

And Genny cream is always acceptable

  5. The Italian is just such a versatile sandwich. So complete, so silky smooth.

The Meatball is a no bull ###### number 1 defenseman. A franchise cornerstone.

The Chicken Finger consistently produces those "wow" moments. It brings you to the edge of your seat, regularly.

Plus there's no sauerkraut on any of them.

I agree with this, especially the meatball being the 1D.

Chicken finger sub is your scoring winger who plays a 2-way game.

But my pick for captain? Danny's Favorite.

    Ham. Capocollo. Salami. It's a 3-tool athlete.

Versatility lies within the toppings. Want more of a kick? Add onions and jalapeno peppers. Balance out the kick with some banana peppers. If your heart desires mustard or sub oil, throw it on.

Danny's favorite is my captain and first line center.

  6. From 97 Rock this AM

.@ByMHarrington on @MorningBull97: Don't expect #Sabres  to get a 1st round pick for #EvanderKane. That's not gonna happen. A prospect, lower round pick, maybe a low roster player are all possibilities. High draft pick is very, very unlikely. #Buffalo

    Umm

First question that comes to mind, and anyone is free to chime in on this, but what does Harrington know? Does he have connections or has he ever had inside knowledge on the Sabres?

  7. Need your help everyone!

I'm trying to decide where to go for the game Sunday. 716 and Santora's on Transit are all booked up.

Anyone have recommendations on places in the Buffalo area that have plenty of TV's?

I would love to watch the game at Amherst Ale House but they don't take reservations. I would hate to show up at noon and be stuck without a table.

Thanks in advance for the help !

  8.

I can't imagine him being effective at all, especially if its a high ankle sprain.

Speaking of that, I haven't seen anything online about whether its high ankle sprain or "low"

  9. I can't believe they did it. Last time Buffalo had a playoff game, I just turned 7 years old. No memory of the playoffs.

You're all my brothers/sisters and I'm so glad to share this moment with you.

Cheers to 2018, to the city of Buffalo continuing to change its course, and to the Buffalo Bills

  10. Woah, i.'ll guess you haven't seen Dahlin play to this point?

If you want to start talking about Tkachuk at #2, I'll listen but I don't care how Guhle looks to be, there is no way you pass up Dahlin at #1. He is the McDavid of defensemen.

If we are talking about forwards at #2 overall, imagine Mittelstadt with Svechnikov on his wing...

  11. The flex to a 4pm start is annoying

Devil's advocate: I like the 4:00 start, gives me more time to pre-game and build up the hype.

I don't think I can get disappointed today. Of course if Cincy wins and Buffalo gets blown out that would be a bit depressing.

But I had this team pegged for 4 or 5 wins this year. I have long-term faith in our HC/GM combo for the first time since forever

  12. I’ve been saying this for years. There was no excuse for taking Nylnder with Sergachev sitting there. From 2012 to 2017, between 3 GM’s and 19 1st and 2nd rd picks we have drafted 4 D but only Guhle in the last 4 drafts. Of these 4, one was traded away (Zadorov). During TM’s tenure, 8 F and 1 D with 1st and 2nd rd picks. Is it any wonder we have a lousy D group?

    Can't even score, either!

  13.

    @BuffaloSabres
    #Sabres lines this morning:
    Kane-Eichel-Pominville
    Pouliot-O’Reilly-Okposo
    Nolan-Josefson-Rodrigues
    Girgensons-Larsson-Reinhart
    Fasching, Wilson extras

    Scandella-Ristolainen
    Beaulieu-Bogosian
    McCabe-Antipin
    Gorges-Falk

From Eichel's last performance, 2 goals and 1 assist occurred when Kane was on the ice with him so I'm not surprised they put them back together

  14. I've sat up in the 224/201/202. Nice seats. The game not so much; that on the Sabres were up 2-0 after the first, lost the game 7-2. Kassian fought Upshall (?) that game in the first. Woo!

Now with those seats, what amenities come with them? I think there's in-seat food and beverage service but besides that I'm only aware that the viewing angle should be really good.

  15. the food and drink isnt free. there is a private bar and bathrooms, but you do have to pay. there are corporate boxes, which i think have free stuff. i am not in those. i have a different box.

    i am in cb10

I need you to go so you can give me a report on how the seats are! I'm planning on taking my brother to the home game next Friday. Initially I was going to look for a lower bowl seat. I noticed the tickets in the 200's are so cheap for tomorrow night's game that I'm waiting for the prices to drop next Friday as well so I can give him that experience.

  16. Interesting result tonight.

Housley seperated Kane and Jack 5 on 5, but left them togehter on the PP. Result: PP goal by Kane, Pouliot scores on Jack's line and KO scores.

I'm really hoping he keeps these lines for a few games. They just seem to make so much sense as far as the roles each player plays and how they fit together with their linemates.
