I am a big advocate for acquiring a vet, a stay at home physical defenseman to pair with Power. I wanted that last year, and I still want it.
I don't see the cap room for highly paid Dahlin, highly paid Power, and maybe soon to be highly paid Byram, plus the TBD veteran top 4 guy, plus Muel.
If Power is traded to keep Byram then so be it. I don't understand that Byram trade anyway, especially given the $$$ already invested in the defense.
Power will end up being very good for a long time somewhere else then - just like countless others.
Can’t keep everyone. It comes down to who is the right player. Byram or Power? IMO Byram is further along in his development and more well rounded.

This is his second full season, do not count the year he left the ncaa to play 9 games.
We get it, you don’t like him. He is frustrating at times. But he is 21 and playing a position that takes time and patience.
You obviously cannot tell the difference from top 4 and 5/6/7. So you don’t see his puck handling and passing skills? Seriously, the entire NHL Scouting community had him at the top tier of the draft and you see him as a 3rd pair. If he was a 3rd pair talent at 21 he would still be in Rochester.
Trade him now, at the first year of his new contract, and you will get the absolute minimum in return, trading him now is devaluating him. Other GMs will line up and fleece the Sabres, it would be similar to the ROR trade.
It’s not about liking him. This is isn’t elementary school. What puck moving does he do? One no look pass highlight last year isn’t puck moving.
Scouts have definitely been wrong before. At this point I’d rather get a guy who is a couple years older. Use that first overall status to land a guy that is a legitimate 3 or 4 and responsible.
We have Dahlin and Byram. We don’t need Power. We need someone who is an asset now, not in three years maybe.

The Alex Tuch in the OP is the motivated and playing on a good team version.
The Tuch we have is the skates big circles, misses the net, and occasionally does something useful.
Is there a correlation? Yes.
Is it excusable? Hell no.Is he a first liner on most teams? No
Would he make a good third line defensive forward? I believe so.

He is 21. He absolutely is a child. It’ll be at least three years, minimum, before he will only start to be what he will become.
It can be coached into him. Again, he is 21.
I’m way more worried about resting the fate of our team on our ”#1 center” who still tries to stick handle through 4 players at 26 rather than just make a pass to an open guy. Tage can be brutal to watch.
If I’m wrong then I’m wrong and everyone wins in the end. 21 is not a child though. It’s old enough to be held accountable for actions to reinforce what right looks like.
He’ll get more experience but I don’t see the top four defenseman everyone thinks he has inside him.

Power with the right coach will be just fine. He’s a child. He needs time.
Only he’s not a child and he has played a lot in the last three years. NHLer for sure, just not a top four. Not sure why it’s hard to accept.

Power is not a top four dman. He continues to get sucked into chasing. He acts like the fourth forward too often then gets stuck down low. He does not demonstrate any vision for playmaking beyond basic awareness. Meaning he sees where everyone is at but does not seem able to anticipate how a play will develop.
He’s an NHL caliber defenseman but not a top four. I was hopeful at one point. To get better KA needs to be realistic with what he has.

I didn’t select either option because neither will get the job done. We are so focused on ending the drought but we also don’t want 10 years of getting knocked out in the first round.
A properly constructed team IMO would include:
Peterka TBD TBD
Benson Thompson Quinn
Greenway Cozens Tuch
TBD Krebs TBD
Dahlin TBD
TBD Byram
Clifton R. Johnson
UPL

Line brawl. Whoever is next on the ice, line brawl. (Except Reaves... please don't go after him, Krebs. You'll die.)
I would’ve thought your advice would be to let the hate flow through him 😂

I would trade or package Power in a skinny minute while he still has people fooled and retains high value.
Power is a quasi bust. Definitely an NHL caliber defenseman but more of five or six guy IMO. Slow, average offensive IQ, average puck handling. When Dahlin had his struggles you could tell there was another level. That is non existent with OP.
Agreed there is a misperception of his talent and ceiling. If that hypothetical trade doesn’t happen soon his contract will be an issue.

Here’s one good quote
At least Cozens appears to understand the fans’ point of view. Makes me wonder which players got their feelings hurt over the fire Donny chants.
Really hoping Cozens has a rebound season next year. He’s not great at fighting but is one of only a couple willing to stick up for himself.

If you ever wondered what a line scrum between two extremely soft teams would look like. Both should be ashamed.

Gotta be honest, only three DMen I really want back next year are Dahlin, Byram, and R. Johnson.

Also who the heck is Bobby McMahon? I swear, my league recognition at large is so much lower now
Don’t worry. Most NHL players are not and will not be household names. It seems analysts and announcers sometimes talk about them as though they’re an integral part of their team. In reality they’re JAGs and a dime a dozen. Sabres have about 15 of them playing tonight 😂

A lot of non play by play talk during gameplay on the ESPN feed.

Now we can blame the loss in the reffing

4 missed nets by Tuch so far.
At least he’s consistent in showing he’s a bottom six guy.

Clifton about to catch Krebs in goals scored 😂

Why? Why can so many others teams turn it around with the right coach but not the Sabres ?
Gotta have the right coach which means the right GM which means the right Pres of Hockey O…… never mind.

That goalie’s momma know he’s on the ice?

Ask me once we start the pre season. For now I say:
- We have one good goalie until proven otherwise.
- Quinn should be back, and that helps.
- Thompson should be healthy and ready to get back on track as a goal scorer.
- Defense is almost there but lacking the big force that clears the front of the net and pounds opponents
- We must add 2 centers and 2 wingers
Tuch - Tage - Skinner
Quinn - Cozens - Peterka
Benson - New 2C/3C - New Power Forward
Greenway - New 4C - New Winger
Spare: Krebs and TBD
Flush: VO, Girgs
To AHL: Jost, Robinson
If your team has TNT and Tuch on the first line, your team isn’t making the playoffs. Not saying they’re bad but neither is a first liner in their positions.

Botterill was fired because he refused to cut staff. Murray because he didn’t build a team aligned with his HC’s scheme. Regier because he had lots of money and still couldn’t get it done during TPegs’ early years.
Terry wouldn’t have to fire so many people if he could find better GMs. That would necessitate he admit he doesn’t know his a** from a hole in the ground about the NHL. Which would, of course, allow Buffalo to attract a qualified GM to get this team into the playoffs. I don’t think Terry has a plan if Kevyn keeps failing. Not many eager to have thay guy second-guesssing a GM or meddling in personnel.
I still don’t understand why we keep hiring unproven GMs and coaches. A team in this phase needs experience all around.

Until they line em up and end their career. If Stevens hit McDavid, McKinnon, or Matthews they’d be done.
