  1. As upset as botterill was, something had to give. This is now jack and dahlins team, there is more depth and salary cap flexibility. And we won't have to watch 90 sleepwalk through 40 games and drone on about needing to be better ever again. Stitch the C on 15, and start scouting for our 3 first rounders next year. And also probably get ready to trade a dman or two. This is fun.

  2. His fat contract is actually going to be a steal this season, and if not, then next.

This is a league where Johansen and Draisaitl make 8 and 8.5 mil (the latter posting Girgensons-esque ES metrics when not with McDavid).

I agree that we're overrating his market value, but we have his actual hockey value bang-on, and that'll eventually become apparent if actual usage tactics occur on this team for the first time since Lindy lost track of the pulse of his team when losing the co-caps.

I think the real cash tied to his contract needs to be looked at. Saves an owner real cash, which does have value.

  3. Botterill better have a ###### plan if he's dealing O'Reilly. Casey isn't the answer for this coming season.

I think he views the coming season as one to show improvement but not make the playoffs. And if we make the playoffs, we'd get bounced quickly. Point is, when O'Reilly is 29 or 30 it's too late. Trade high, buy low.

I also wouldn't be shocked if he trades for a top prospect and expiring deal. Throw that guy on Jack's wing and then spin him for even more.

Dahlin is the x factor in my opinion. If he's as good as we are being told, 3 years from today is go time.

  4. IF O'Reilly gets traded, I think it'll tell us a lot about where Botterill thinks the team is at. Given there's no compelling reason to move him (such as entering the last year of his contract), if Botterill trades him for futures, to me that means he thinks the team won't compete for 3 years.

Depends on how you define compete. I hope our gm counts that as being able to contend for the cup, and not limping into the playoffs.

If that's the case, we are 2-3 away. And ROR is not part of that picture. Trade him while his value is high, and also when the real money remaining on his contract will be a windfall to an owner worried about cash.

  5. I'm betting Harrington would be one of the first to criticize an athlete for lashing out at a heckling fan. I wonder if vogl leaving saved him from the targeted buyouts?

As for his work, he's competent. But it's not like I'm excited to see his picture next to his story, like it used to be with Kelley.

I wonder if Jim Kelley would have been able to stand up to a barrage of Steve’s from Cheektowaga. I’m not convinced his reputation wouldn’t have been bruised from having to interact with the masses on twitter.

  6. Is this really a difficult job? Brandon's genius was leveraging a threat to move an NFL franchise to sell tickets for an awful team.

Currently, the NHL team has the first overall selection and is top 2 in the tv ratings in the playoffs they aren't participating in. On the football side, they are coming off the most feel good season in over 15 years. Drafting a top 10 QB with salary cap room next year.

It feels to me that this would work even without a president.

  7. I'm cool seeing what Linus can do next year. Maybe Murray overpaying for lehner has me gun shy, but I think next year is more of an evaluation year given our cap issues.

What is a fair value trade for one of Washington's goalies?

IMO goalie has just become priority #1.

  8. I'm not sure it works that way. The pitchfork mob may not be brilliant, but being good at your job doesn't lead to being unpopular.

Sleepwalking through the start of the year and being dim enough to verbalize that you are mentally weak does it though.

Also, being one of the best players on a bad team is a good way to get real unpopular real quick.

  9. Actually, it's likely Larry Quinn who deserves thanks for dragging golisano to a payday.

This has that sweet smell of truth.

Mr. Pegula could not move the team, even if he wanted to, if I recall the purchase agreement correctly.

Yes. Thank you Gary, prior to Tom. And thank you Tom for putting that anti-movement clause in your sale agreement to Mr. Pegula and going forward. I believe their is a covenant attached to the team that it cannot be moved if / when it is ever sold.

  10. The first for Duchene was I believe 28th overall, combined with the prospect first. If Montreal gives their first, it's top 8 I believe. On that note....does the NHL draft have their version of a Jimmy Johnson draft value chart?

For me it's all timeline. With O'Reilly's age, cap hit and public admission of being mentally weak, I want to move on. In the mind of jbot, I wonder when he thinks we are ready to really contend. If the answer is 3 years or greater, I think you have to move on.

The only way I'd be okay with keeping him around is if the cap projected to grow dramatically. I don't think that's the case, even with Seattle joining.

  11. An interesting point to think about....for newer owners in the league, what is their success? Arizona, Edmonton, Carolina and us are all part of the new guard. I'm optimistic on the strides that Terry and Kim appear to be making, with both franchises. St. Louis and Vegas are likely top of the pile in terms of early ownership success.

Reading through the comments here, what is the ideal for an owner? Not active in the day to day, but visible in media and the owners box?

I'm thankful we aren't Ottawa, or the Carolina panthers. And not having to worry about budget for either team. It's something I'm still getting used to.

  12. My fear of keeping him.

Already 27 years old, plummeting 5 on 5 goal production, 5 years left at substantial dollars, and then today's interview.

Sometimes leading is keeping the truth to yourself. If I'm signing checks or trying to build this team, I'm not sure I can rely on this guy for the next five years. You can't cut or stow him in the minors. And since he is likely our most marketable asset, if bots wants to overhaul the lineup that's perhaps the most logical starting point.

As for jbot, he's preached organizational competitiveness and creating a winning culture through the minors to the big club. I wonder if comments like that are a line in the sand for him.
