I recognize it. I just don't recognize it as a real extant thing.

I grew up in Red Wings land and boy howdy I tell ya, every morning you'd have to get up an hour early just to go out and shoo the damned winged wheels away from the bird feeder. Always taking the best seed and scaring off the good bird. Rascals.

Don't like the commentary itself or the fact that she's making it? Because the latter would be ridiculous.

While you're not wrong about people overreacting to it, I take offense to shoehorning diversity in. As someone who fully supports diversity, I find purposefully/loudly including it to be more harmful than good- it actually enhances the "otherness" rather than giving valuable context (it also feeds the trolls but who cares what those ***** think). Take the whole "Nagini is a trapped asian woman" thing... not necessary. Genuinely rather creepy, from an exotification standpoint.

Some of her statements I'm fully on board with. Dumbledore being gay, sure- it makes a ton of sense- it's alluded to in the originals. But then she keeps it out of the newer films. You can't stand up and say that, as the creator, and then not follow through. That's where I believe a lot of the fan's displeasure comes from.

For someone who claims to be so fully in tune with the open minded ideology, she doesn't back it up. Casting and standing by Johnny Depp, who at the time of casting and arguably now, was a controversial/problematic figure during the metoo movement, goes against many of her other claims. I have no issue again, with stuff like "oh Malfoy is actually a werewolf" because cool, I like those little "behind the scenes" nuggets you're dropping later on to further enrich the tapestry you've woven- nuggets that you can see pretty plainly in the text if you look. But a lot of it doesn't feel planned, it feels like forced relevance (when it doesn't need to be forced at all!). I take no issue with people of color playing the main trio either (Many adaptations have Hermione black and Harry as ethnically Indian), that's super cool. I do think people misunderstood her condoning this for plays/art/etc. as "rewriting"- which is where some of the misplaced anger lies. That's on the fans. Do your thing (in before black ariel rage).

The world exists- some people are gonna love the new headcanon stuff, some are gonna stick to the original work as it was written. Again, I'm all for seeing diversity (lots of creatives I follow are craving more "regularly" female characters, we've gotten the extreme badass heroes now which is amazing but... can we also be something besides a trope/a genuine character?), but I also believe if Rowling truly feels this way about many of these issues (which I hope she does, and is not simply going with the "woke trend" some have accused her of), she can use her talents to write new stories, additions, sequels, to further enrich and verify her world moving forward. Have those characters tell these stories, not just her on twitter and then not actually doing anything with it.

I don't want you to think I'm over here rolling my eyes at diversity - rather I'm rolling my eyes at poorly implemented diversity - afterthought diversity for somewhat inexplicable reasons which seem more for publicity/novelty rather than deeply held belief of actual equality, which cheapen the whole idea of it.

well that turned into a book- sorry man- but it touches on a couple things that have kinda been floating around the zeitgeist for a couple years here. She's not as bad as Lucas- but then I feel my opinions on Star Wars and what's happened with it recently are kinda unpopular.

And yet he continues to get these same roles over and over.  I bet he's got well over 20 movies playing the same exact character, granted that number is inflated a bit from the Pirates movies.

Typecast, easy money. I don't remember the publication, but there was one fairly recently about how he really has no money, and it really painted him as a bit of a *****. Dark and I were watching Living and Loathing in Las Vegas the other day and while he's still wacky in that flick, I miss that Depp. Loved him growing up, Don Juan diMarco, Benny & Joon, Crybaby... I think that whole Alice in Wonderland bs was really the end for me. God I hated that take on the mad hatter.

Yeah, that's the book. Bought it, got halfway through it, put it down, will never touch it again. It's a play in book form. That's not a bad thing necessarily, and it's not why the book is horrible. It just is.

This fantastic beats movie is a 2 hour set up where nothing happens except for not so vague references to the Rowling interview where she said Dumbledore was gay. Which they have no intention of ever saying on screen, btw. Holy crap, it sucked.

Wow, super glad I didn't waste my hours on earth on it then hahaha

Just watched the 2nd Fantastic Beasts movie. Holy cow, that movie was freaking terrible! The only thing in the Harry Potter universe that was worse than that pile of garbage was the flaming pile of garbage that was the last book. I don't even remember what it was called.

Cursed Child or something? Didn't read it. Also didn't see the 2nd Fantastic Beasts movie. I read a synopsis, saw what they did to a kind, adorable character (alison sudol's role) and said NOPE nope nope. Also didn't think I could stomach more wACkY johnny depp.

I also ignore Rowling's stupid "elucidating" commentary on the world and leave the universe where I loved it as a kid, and enjoying the first Fantastic Beasts movie.

Chevelle had a damned good set.  The crowd was smaller than I expected, but plenty enthusiastic.

We’re home before Breaking Benjamin finished.  Funny.  Now that my sons work schedule has him up at 5am, seeing the encore doesn’t have the importance it used to.

Had a great time with the boy.  We enjoy doing these.

Nice. My friend didn't end up going and I'm not a fan of either really so I skipped that one.

i gotta say though, the concert on Friday with Alice in Chains and Korn was seriously a good time. I was really surprised/impressed. Korn has a couple new songs that are actually pretty heavy, which was fun.

The wolves howled. My shorts didn't disintegrate. I was handed too many beers. I got to be with my best friend and watch her husband dance like an idiot. All in all a great time.

I'm looking forward to Knotfest. Just wish it wasn't a Sunday night. Monday's gonna hurt... getting bathed in vape/cigarette smoke for hours never leaves my head feeling good.

I have cut the sleeves off. It is more magical now.

Have you ever tried any psychedelics for any of your mental health issues? I’ve had tremendous lasting benefits from psychedelics and there is plenty of evidence out there that shows their benefits. [EDITED TO REMOVE OFFER] if you’re interested. It’s a far cheaper and cleaner alternative to traditional methods of treatment.

Either way, good for you for taking care of yourself and feeling better!

My best friend had that work for her for awhile. That's a no go for me unfortunately- I react very poorly to psychedelics. I also have a heart condition (metal in my heart essentially keeping me alive) that I have to contend with- even low key "common" stuff like cannabis and mild alcohol can cause me problems-doc's orders are to steer clear of anything that a doc is not tightly involved in. But yeah, I have another friend who swears mushrooms have helped her more than anything else so far. I've found a route that seems to be doing the trick. Very low dose- I'm not on much. I've been very open about it all on social media because I strongly believe the stigma attached to mental health is super dangerous.

As one of my fav podcast hosts says frequently: "Your mental health is not your fault, but it is your responsibility".

What is awesome??  Being alive.  Retired.  Good health.  No money worries.  Loving wife.  Sitting on the balcony watching a light rain with a beer posting on Sabrespace.

My dad said you need 3 things to be happy:

    1. Health - Without health, nothing else matters.

    2. Time - Time to enjoy life, wife, kids, wine, golf, whatever is your passion.

    3. Money - Not millions and millions, but enough to be comfortable.

    Thanks, Dad.  I miss him.

I aspire to that. Glad to hear you're living the dream.

  9. Darien Lake tonight to get some amazing (read: fascinating) people watching in at the Alice in Chains/Korn concert. 7th grade me loved Korn... and my friend says the guy doing Alice in Chains now is good and sounds like Layne so.. whatever, I'm there for beers with friends.

And to wear my three wolf moon shirt. AWOOOOooooOOOoo

on a more serious note... I finally got my super depressed/anxious ass into therapy/medication a couple months back and while I know everyone's paths are different- I'm feeling the best I have in my life. The suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, and general swings are all but gone, and the contrast is stark. I'm so lucky I have a health insurance plan that'll pay for some of it. If anyone's struggling with that *****, reach out, I'm happy to lend an ear, or a few dollars if your insurance is crap. I can't stress how different my quality of life is now.

Now thats a Bills Embedded episode I would watch.

I vaguely remember someone sending me a video of sports dudes (not sure if college or pro, or what sport even) learning some aerial, and it was pretty funny. Depending on the guy, not sure I could catch them if they came down weird... I can support/lift a good 220 pounds but some of them boys be big

I'd be so intimidated- we have a few men but let me just say.. the apparatuses I specialize in aren't necessarily uh... manpart friendly... How do you ask an athlete celebrity "Excuse me big burly man, which side do you dress on so I don't smush it somehow" hahaha

Honestly I'd probably have a blast. I love teaching intro classes- they're usually hilarious.

  11. So last week, one of my aerial students’ boyfriend came to watch. He was a very kind, soft spoken guy- both of them really stood out to me as cool people if I’m being honest. Went out of his way to shake my hand and introduce himself as Rob. he asked if I would let him join class halfway through but my rules are not until he takes an introductory course.

asked her this week if he was coming to watch again and she said nah he’s at training camp in Rochester with his team

    his team?

“Yeah, he’s on the Bills! Wide receiver”

Turns out it’s Rob Foster. I had no clue. He’s super nice and his gf/friend is a super cool down to earth awesome person.

So now I want the Bills to come take circus with me haha

Went back through the first pages of this thread to relive the twists and turns.  Holy cow does this stick out.

My how things have changed since 2011.  Rip Van Winkle is aka Pappy 10yr.  $6 a glass.  At a bar.  Triple or quadruple that today.  If you can find it.  Ahhh.. the good old days.

Various members of the Pappy family were on the list at Marble + Rye this weekend. I was tempted. But not for $40-120 bucks for a 1 oz pour.

  13. The more I see it the more I dislike it. Too bad.

I'm just not a fan of gold + white. It just screams 80s brass'n'glass interior design, tacky nouveau wealth, a jewelry store's interior, Salvatores. Pop a fake plastic fern or two behind it and bam. aesthetic.

Personal preference. I guess I also have never been a fan of wearing white jerseys- I have a few of course, but I'll always take the home colors. More slimming haha

That adidas graphic just looks like the long baggy white tshirts wannabe skater dudes wore under their short sleeved tshirts (from Volcom or Hurley) with a good puka shell or metal ball necklace in the late 90s early 2000s. Bowl cut or frosted tips mandatory.

  15. My mom celebrated her 11th birthday on that day. We were talking about it this weekend, about how the whole world stopped and came together to watch. We realized that in my generation, that moment of awe, stopping life and coming around the TV set to focus for a few hours was very different- with 9/11.

  16. I grew up in a family of teetotalers, but drank in college. I'm on meds now that make more than one beer a recipe for all kinds of stomach hell. Finding I don't miss it *that* much. I have one when appropriate, enjoy it, call it a day. Two if it's early and I have hours to let it settle. I have a coworker who's straight edge- it's kinda weird the questions people give him at work functions when he's sipping a soda instead of a beer. A former coworker of mine at my last job just hated alcohol, the taste of it- my god, people never left the guy alone "try this! you'll like this! oh you just haven't tried enough!".

I'm starting to get them now too- "oh are you not feeling well" "oh are you on a diet" "have you tried *fill in the blank hard seltzer that's popular right now*" "ooooh are you expecting"....

Like... Asking someone why they're not drinking is like asking a couple why they don't have kids. The answer might be banal or very very painful, you don't know their story, and it's bloody rude of you to stick your nose in their business.

I want the story behind you and Terry Sawchuk (whose middle name is the same as Robert Orr’s).  I know he’s a Red Wing, and of your heart’s beating ...

Goalies fascinate me. He's one of those OG goalie types. Fascinating guy. It's partially as superficial as me finding that (somewhat exaggerated/doctored) pic of his face all stitched up (fun fact, I digitally painted using that as reference, people often accidentally use my painting in articles instead of the real picture. If you look slightly closely you'll see my messy/inexperienced brushstrokes- gives it away fast) really interesting... and partially that when I got into hockey, I really fell for the history, and to me, him and Plante and Dryden are important historical goalies.

And yes, the grit and old stand up style/pads of Sawchuk goes very very nicely with that classic old Red Wings sweater. I'm all about appearances haha

Oh my god all I ever hear about is how "well it was a pile and falling apart BUT.... *insert praise here*"

The Suburban: "I hate this giant hot money pit ughhhhhh I love it but such a giant hole in my pocket"

Buick LeSabre (his grandpa's): various grumblings, had to have the seats pretty much remade to make it bearable to drive for his frame, "yeah I don't expect to like it, it's an old person's car" Bonus: Had the occasional Werther's Original stuck in nooks and crannies

the Roadmaster: all praise and love until it ***** the bed and started pissing fluid everywhere

The VW Golf: the only car I've known him to own that he didn't outwardly/verbally hate. Of course VW had to eff up that massive Diesel debacle and piss him off. Thanks, VW. This is why we can't have nice things.

current car, Chevy Impala: He has nothing nice to say at all. Pure. Hatred. I will be shocked if he actually rose tints this one in the future. Seriously. If this car was a person, I'd advise it to take a restraining order out against him for malicious intent.

My car: Lots of hatred. Doesn't fit his body. Rattle trap. Small.

My wife and I have several 'rules' that we have formulated over the years, not for each other.

The biggest one is we never answer the door bell, or knock, ever.  And we don't look out to see who it is.  We don't want to risk being snout to snout with the snout that we are ignoring.  Words to live by, I say.

Not sure if I've told this yarn here before or not, but back when I first moved in with dark, he worked different hours than I. There were some rough times in our early relationship, and when I heard the doorbell and opened it up to find a super beautiful well dressed young woman asking me if Carter was home to continue "where they last left off" I about fainted.

Turns out, she and her partner (the dude came up and joined her seconds later, he'd been like tying his shoe or something I guess) were Jehovah's Witnesses who Carter had decided to banter religion with on previous occasions during the day.
