  1. So two of my friends unexpectedly gave me gifts today (which always makes me feel bad I didn't have something in return)... the one is a season ticket holder and got a random signed Sabres hat from Hockey Fights Cancer night. She gave it to me today and we figured out it's Conor Sheary! So now I have a Stanley Cup winner signed hat... just not as a Sabre. Yet.

The other friend gave me a few things including a 2019 Sabres calendar... the funny part is it prominently features ROR on the cover... he's Mr. August in fact. Eichel's #15 too. Makes you realize how early they lay out things like that!

  2. Putting together some charity stuff tonight, friends' wedding tomorrow and I actually feel a small spark of artistic inspiration for the first time in months. I had a few people I haven't talked to in awhile reach out and turns out (unsurprisingly) we're all similarly burnt out, depressed and in varying artistic slumps. Had a little nostalgic talk about the last time we all felt we really were happy/creatively fulfilled and belonged somewhere and why and I guess it answered some stuff. Doesn't fix things but acknowledging why there's a hole can help you not continue to fall into it. I've climbed off the barely-functioning-suicidal ledge again- was on it wayyy too long this time. Hopefully I've got a few tools ready this time to prevent a slide like that again. Unfortunately a lot of it seems to be a shift with hormones and age so... guess it's doctor time. Shoot up my brain with chemicals I guess, I have a life to live.

  3. The RnR Hall of Fame is kind of a weird beast when you consider its inductees. My distant ancestor Jimmy Rodgers is in there. Would you call him rock? Hell no. He was a country singer, known for yodeling- the Singing Brakeman. But you can call him and Woody Guthrie and some of those other guys predecessors/influences.

Tupac and NWA are in there. Not rock. You start to bend the meaning there- it's more about influential musicians who shaped the coming decades/fashion/culture than straight up "rock" which can be pretty narrowly defined.

Last time we were there, I remember having a long convo with dark about who would go in over the next few years. Radiohead was definitely one we chose- but I admit I didn't expect it to be this soon. Then you remember how long they've technically been around and ... yep. It fits. They revolutionized a whole side of music and spawned a million wee indie bands imitating their sound. Thom went on to have a pretty successful solo ride, too. I personally love Radiohead. Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows are among my favorite albums of all.

We figured Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains would get in there soon- Pearl Jam was inducted last year. Someone like Madonna or Janet Jackson will def make it in quicker than some of their contemporaries- they were more popular among a general audience. I think we were surprised the Cure weren't in there yet. Give it 15-20 more years and pop stars like Arianna Grande will be joining folks like Britney Spears and Drake in the hallowed halls... and they'll beat good metal bands in because the niche was smaller.

Now get y'all's snobby music snoots untwisted and go listen to some of your fav music and enjoy the fact it's Friday.

They ain’t the cute little critters you see in the memes. They ***** everywhere and have their own special brand of stink. As soon as we got in there searching, my daughter and I were “smells like otters.”

Dad has oceanfront property and has been battling them on the beach off and on for years. But they’ve always stayed on the beach. We discovered what appears to be a path up the bank to a hard to access corner of the house where it looks like they found an opening that let them get inside the foundation.

We’ve got a restoration company lined up to do clean up and close the access next week. My brother-in-law and I are probably going to start ripping up the floor this weekend to save the expense of them doing it. I’m not looking forward to what we will find.

If I remember right, they literally set up latrines and then roll in them as a way of marking territory. I remember watching some nature doc and aw look at the otters... spraying each other in various bodily fluids... fishy feces, too. Noooo thank you. Nope.

I know a few zoo folk and they all say the number one animal they hate dealing with is otters. They call them furry stinky chainsaws. Slippery, covered in fishy crap, and bad tempered with nasty teeth and claws.

    Sorry, man haha godspeed

I think it works because of the inclusion of several Buffalo memes, not the least of which is Marty talking fast.  The whole thing is one inside joke* after another.

*by inside, I mean you have to be a Buffalo sports fan to really get the jokes, the references, etc.

It also helps that the people they used in the video have some personality/silly facial expressions.

I think a lot of sports orgs including the Sabres have tried funny things in the past (usually holiday themed) but you get monotone script reading and dead eyes, which if used correctly can be hilarious too but... this vid is reminiscent of those playoff commercials from a few years ago with the Sedins as sexy swedish twins, Lundqvist making smoothies in a couple's home and Ovi's head in a locker.

  6. *looks around office*

While I prefer my headphones to be big ol' pillowy affairs gently piping music into my brain, a lot of the people I work with (all ages, mind you) are using those apple airpod things. I guess I don't care, honestly.

But having a giant headphone apparatus is office speak for "don't bug me" vs the fact I can never see the stupid little ones until the person I'm trying to talk to turns to me in exasperation and I see the little space age buggers.

Seems mostly older folk use the abomination bluetooth headset things, doing their darndest to recall their younger days as an intrepid Brookstone employee.

What the actual frack? How? What? No! Dark fix!

haha everyone loses their damn marbles when I share I haven't seen Die Hard. It's almost making me never want to see it. I'm not really a big Bruce Willis fan so...

Ironically, I have a client who I've done a lot of art based off the movie for. So I kinda feel like I've seen it.

I swear to god guys, if I finally watch this movie it better blow my freaking mind in proportion to the loads of ***** people give me upon learning I've never spent 2 hours and 12 minutes of my short time on earth viewing it. It better not be overrated. I'm truthfully expecting an amusing testosterone-laden romp on par with Demolition Man.

  8. I have never seen: Elf, Die Hard, Christmas in Connecticut, Love Actually

And I don't like: Home Alone (seriously that movie makes me irrationally angry), The Santa Clause

Worst movie ever made: Christmas with the Kranks. Next to Jack Frost.

I'm a total grinch... which is ok since I actually like the original and the Jim Carrey version. I'm already against the new Illumination version coming out. I greatly dislike the redesign and I'm in that grumpy group of folks who's super sick of redo's. (I also know a guy who worked on it and he's a total POS but that's a different story haha)

Good/fine: Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, Holiday Inn, White Christmas, A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation (both of those were HATED in my family), The Muppets Christmas Carol.. can't think of many others...

Honestly, my family never really watched holiday films. Christmas was always just stress, someone sick with the stomach flu, and people yelling at each other, so I guess I'm not a huge fan of the whole thing. Never really been a positive time.

I ask myself that a lot, I consider the house an investment, I honestly wasn't going to move out of my apartment; however, people that love meth moved in and the area went to hell. So when I decided to move I didn't wanna make a lateral move, I enjoy the house, and do in between trips. Chances are I'll slow down eventually. As for work, I work around 10 days a month or so at the hospital, long hours usually 12-16 hour days, and that's adequate. No alimony or support like many colleagues ?

    So...

when you're not in the home, can I live there? I'll keep it clean and pay rent, promise...

Who are you taking as a date?  Carter would never end up being very fancy no matter how nice a dress you rented for him.

I've got some cute coworkers I'll be there with ?

The rental comes with a backup style- that one's for Carter. I know enough drag queens to help him make it work.

  10. We're all getting out of work early for a happy hour for my two good friends/coworkers who're gettin' hitched next week. Hooray booze!

I'm excited for the wedding too. I even rented a nicer than usual dress so I can pretend I'm a fancy woman for one night.

It's NOT you.  No way.  No how.

And, you are supposed to call back to me when I call out.  Just like Freddie.

    Not enough yyyyyyys mate!

Eh I've vented throughout the week in the random thread. Just the usual miasmatic mush of sick friends, old family, personal physical pain, severe depression, overwork, and mounting pile of tasks I either am too overwhelmed or too anxious to do. ***** cancer, ***** mean people, ***** depression, ***** my insane work schedule. It's got to improve. I remind myself I'm a million times better off than I was the last two Decembers but man, a lot of this is stuff out of my control now. I can't find the right way to cope.

Can they let George H.W. Bush rest? I heard this morning he'll be on a train today to his final resting place. I don't know if it's been "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" or "Weekend at Bernie's" since he died.

Fairly normal for a departed head of state. I remember reading stories about these sorts of tours in older days going awry when the dearly departed began to decompose despite the highest technological marvel of the time, refrigeration cars/ice boxes, doing their best to delay such events... Lots of flowers and a hope for cool weather.

Oh Yuri. That's disappointing. I can understand ditching a franchise after all of that and finding your hockey somewhere else (especially as a dual team lover like myself), but to be that all-in on a new team that quickly... is this the sports version of rebounding post breakup? Doesn't matter in the long run, hope he's doing well (I know you still lurk here, you poetic soul).

Cat Caveat: I own several murderous beasts. And my dogs really want this little guy. Like, bad!

I love it- I have a mental image of your dogs going bonkers at the door/window and the cat just looking at them and going "nahhh" and stretching out and going to sleep. Such a cat thing to do.

I would go as far as putting out a cardboard box with a hole in it for a little cat house.

    Carter loves his kitties.

Why, I remember when I was informed that Bubs needed a home or it was end of the line (behavior problems, multiple owners, issues) and he was like "well, I don't really like cats, I'm sort of allergic, and if he's a total piece of crap, we're putting him down". They are inseparable. I've never seen a man love a creature so much. It's the best.

    So much fun!!!

I still haven't finished Hateful Eight. Made it about a half hour in and now it's just sitting there in my Netflix queue.

I haven't even tried. I was so disappointed in Django in theaters and I felt Hateful Eight was going to be similar in a lot of ways. I've seen some of it when Carter was watching it but it wasn't captivating enough for me to sit down and join in (and maybe the prude historian in me is still mad about the accidental? smashing up of a historical artifact ). Maybe I'm doing it dirty, but it's not on my list anytime soon. Inglorious Basterds was the last Tarantino flick I loved- and I still haven't figured out what changed. Because I really love most of his other films. Bugs me.

And then the next movie he filmed after that was Batman Begins, so he immediately had to bulk back up to super shape.  The dude's heart is going to fail on him someday and most people will not even realize how much he's put himself through over the years.

It's insane. He's not someone I immediately think of as a great actor, but his range and method acting is reaching Daniel Day-Lewis levels (side note- Bill the Butcher is still one of my top 5 favorite characters of all time. God- so good). And I've never disliked him in a role. I kinda feel like his part in The Big Short was a wee glimpse into the real dude, the whole screaming and raging to metal thing while being obsessive.... I love that movie.

Fun fact- when preparing the role of Patrick Bateman for American Psycho (which is the only book that I, an avid true crime/gross out fan, could not get through sections of), he said he based his performance off a chance encounter with Tom Cruise in an elevator. He said something along the lines of feeling like Cruise had a big smile and friendly words but absolutely dead eyes, like a sociopath. Which, given Cruise's involvement with Miscavige and the rest of the Scientology goons, is kinda chilling haha
