  1. Tropp is doing fine, but let's be honest about this: Tropp is not a top-6 RW on a contender.

He's top 9 for us. If we can replace him with a similar physical presence, with more offensive upside, then great. But we're talking 6 mil. per year now, unless we replace him with Gaustad, who has less offensive upside, imo.

I think we should be paying more attention to the small creative center, shooter, puck possessor formula. There's a lot of room in the center of the ice, and a small center has the same skates, but is able to turn harder and faster on the same ice as a heavier man. Any physicists out there to prove my point for me?

  2. Prayers goin' your way man. Just be there to listen, you don't need to say much.

+1 Just being there, not necessarily interfering, and letting her feelings go through their natural course. She will appreciate you letting her find her way through her own feelings in this situation, from my experience, slowly losing a father in law.

  3. Man, I miss the lake,.. and those hills (see avatar).

While putting on my seven year old's diaper on to get ready for bed (yes, you read that right), unprompted, she grabbed her toothbrush off of the counter and brushed her teeth by herself, both sides, top and bottom. I almost sh!t myself. F'N fantastic. Having a martini to celebrate.

I see your 20a hills from my hills. It's like we just missed out on being finger lakes. Enjoy your martini. Sounds like you've earned it.

Small world. I used to hunt on property on Vermont Hill road. Gorgeous area.

Some sort of Buffalo Hunting Club? If so, very small world.

  4. Thanks. Now I'm going to HAVE to try this.

Where in Holland are you? - beautiful country out that way.

Is that restaurant at the intersection of 16 and N. Protection still there?

The Windmill. Yes it's still there. My mother used to work there in the late 60's.

I live in the village of Holland, but have a farm up on Vermont Hill.

It's beautiful, in the hills. Some of the views are breathtaking, as they say, but can be lonely when you're used to living in Buffalo. I lived on the West Side on Fargo and Jersey. I have fond memories of walking down to the breakwall with friends to watch the waves on windy nights.

  5. Hard Cider is fantastic. Pick up a six pack of Angry Orchard Traditional, if you get a chance. Hard Cider is what Mike's Hard Lemonade spends millions of dollars pretending to be like. Good hard cider, is already manly, and is more delicious than finer wines, imo, and you don't need to be a snob to enjoy it.

Don't mix cider with beer, though, in any drinking session. Through some strange chemistry, the combination gives you an Old English 40 type of drunk. The mixture, called a "snake bite," in England, is actually banned in many English Pubs because of the bad judgement it is thought to induce. Anyone who has had a bad night on malt liquor knows what i'm'a talkin' about. ;)

  6. To be honest with you, I think a more appropriate comparison with Martin Luther with regard to politics would have been the American Founding Fathers. They at least had a level of compassion. Marx was just flat out ruthless.

I think I see where you are coming from. It's a power to the people movement, without the cold ruthless calculation.

Charting a different course, I just re-read Nobody Knows my Name by James Baldwin. As a whitey, I've had trouble discussing the book with whites and blacks alike, but I really like it. I feel that I have to pretend that it translates to me, rather than saying I understand it. In truth, it challenges me to understand, and is well written.

  7. IDK how much you know about the Protestant Reformation, but I strongly beg to differ on the comparison.

I was just propping up Marx's achievements, upon Luther's to counterbalance my perceived slight against Marx in popular American culture.

It belonged in the complaint Thursdays thread, and I should just accept my punishment.

    Mods?

  8. I hated when I could ride my bike to Canada to get all new sorts of beer, but they were more expensive in Canada. I thought, how is it that the Canadians can afford to drink so much beer?

I hate that I can't buy Molson Dry.

  9. Anthem ... Ayn Rand

    Atlas Shrugged ... Ayn Rand

The Road to Surfdom ... Friedrich Hayak

The Federalist Papers ... Hamilton and Madison

    Das Kapital ... Karl Marx

    1984 ... George Orwell

When you've read those, you can join me in bed.

    Oof, that's some heavy lit.

On a lighter note, wouldn't it bother you if someone called you a communist, just because you listed Marx, with the innuendo that you were a Stalinist, or worse, a hippie? That would be so typical, despite the other books you listed.

If you ran for office, I bet the press would cream you for listing Marx, despite the fact it's required reading in most lib. art colleges. I mean, what did Marx ever do that was so bad? To me, he's maybe the Martin Luther of politics.

  10. Agree about station wagons. On a related note, a hatchback that is big enough to be practical, and stylish or powerful enough enough eschew dweebiness, is awesome. Civic Si or Golf GTI's are pretty rad. I took out the back seats in my Honda and use it more or less as a pickup truck. I could sleep back there in a pinch.

  11. When the fine lady is on her knees, and a C-note is sticking out of her G-string, not only may it be a routine....but it is the truth.

I have been saying the same thing for 5 years. I think that trumps 3 years of rebuilding. Unless you are happy with what you've seen, which is your right.

Just to get up to speed with the routine, and given the c-note and fine lady are real...

Am I supposed to take the money?

I'd think I might rather have the money.

I hope that's not my money that she has in there, because I'm going to need that money to buy gas this morning.

    Wait!

Why is she on her knees down there? I'm late for work, and I still need to buy gas!

  12. Kassian has shown that Jagr-like one handed shielding the puck style at times. Defenders bounce off him, but I wish he had more creativity, so that SNAP he could create something unexpected, to go along with the possession. He was 13th overall, FFS. But he really did kick ass when he decided to fight. I felt that he could have had a Ray/Domi type relationship with Lucic that could have been fun. I feel that he's almost as good as Leino at puck possession, but not as creative. My concern is that he might be kinda dumb, but I don't know. Fighting-wise he might be on par with Lucic in time, picking on middleweights but losing to heavyweights.

  13. Most of those people never played a game of hockey. A better poll would have been Kassian vs Hodgson. My guess is the general public would go 50/50 on that one

Maybe I shouldn't mention other sabres' boards for loyalty reasons, but for this post in particular, I'll reference HFBoards, where it's about 90/10 in favor of Hodgson. That is a board that focuses primarily on prospects, and literally every Canuck fan is crying that they got fleeced, and Sabres fans are rejoicing to get rid of an under-performer. The general public knows nothing about hockey, but I think that most neutral hockey fans aren't seeing much production in Kassian's NHL performances.
