  1. Relax Francis.  I removed the political element because in case you don't know Sabrespace bans people who are too political.

The tanning commercial sucked even more than most commercials suck.  At least with TV there's a usuable mute button.  Radio has one, but with no visual cues to let you know when to unmute.

Mispronouncing names shows a decided lack of education and respect.   Like how some people lack the education to know how to read.  And you know what, I have enough education and experience to know what you are: you're just a troll.  So, you're now in my ignore box because I don't remember you ever posting anything worthwhile.

  2. @PromoTheRobot.  Good questions.  I stream.  I don't live in Buffalo.  It's an ad for a tanning salon, so it's gotta be local enough though.

The commercial offended me because the jingle was horrible and the music was louder than the rap so it took me a while to figure out what she was saying; I only figured it out because it played so freakin' often that I finally found myself paying attention.

And I wasn't particularly offended.  Just saying that it seems incongruous. I'm usually more offended by the PC police.  It's just amazing that it seems like no one at WGR listens to their own station to recognize the irony.  Maybe someone finally did, because, as I say, I'm only hearing the other tanning salon commercial lately.

  3. Well, ya know,  Bedard sounds like a Frenchie name which means I hear "Buh-Darr", rhymes with "far".   So, like, I didn't get the "joke".

How about Backtrack for Bedard? Or "Don't go far if you want Bedard"? "If your team is bettered, you won't get Bedard".

  4. If y'all remember the Julian Assange case, the Swedish standards of sexual assault are very broad, no pun intended.  And that case was eventually dropped, but not before lots of damage was done to him personally.  [I'm not defending his womanizing ways (nor very liberal Swedish sexual practices) ! Edit: removed material that might be deemed political.]

As to the other issue raised, until just recently WGR550 was running a commercial just about every ad-break where the woman says that she wanted her tan to be "brown as a biscuit".  It's so hypocritical for the Sabres organization to condemn this story when their number one on-air partner is running such ads.

    Just saying.

One more thing. I'm so happy that the NFL draft is over, the Bills didn't draft my namesake, and I don't have to hear anyone butcher my name Etienne any more.  It's Ay-Tee-En, eh!.  Not ee-tee-en.  At least not in the original.  Just clarifying.

No.  That is not what that # refers to.  Teams have to expose at least 1 goalie & at least a certain # of skaters with NHL experience.  Those #'s are referring to them qualifying to count as those players.  Both have enough pro experience to need to be protected or the Sabres will have to risk losing them.

It would be interesting to see if Skinner would be willing to be exposed realizing there's no way that Seattle will want that contract.

Ah.  OK.  I get it.  The wording on CapFriendly is definitely confusing.  You're right.  Asplund has almost 3 years of pro experience, so he does need to be protected. But he hasn't played enough games to meet the category of players who can qualify for the minimum of players with extensive experience who must be exposed.  That is to say that Seattle needs to be able to pick well experienced players, not just a bunch of raw and/or underplayed tweener players, such as CJ Smith.  Girgensons and Eakin would suffice for our must expose 2 forwards aspect.  Miller meets the must expose 1 real D-man.  Tokarski is our 1 goalie who must be exposed (unless we resign Ullmark and/or Hutton before the expansion draft).

  6. According to CapFriendly, we can keep Asplund (and therefore Bjork) by simply playing him in only 1/2 of the remaining games.

He has 8(9?) games to go until he is expansion draft fodder.   Does GMKA have the guts to hold out this kid?

It isn't speaking honestly, it's called racism. Also did you ever stop to think why beauty standards are what they are? Knowing physics and understand psychology are not the same thing. It's not open and honest dialog to say that black women aren't attractive if they are too black. That's just straight up racism and even if you have those internal beauty standards, you don't say that trash on the radio. Deserves to be fired for such backwards thinking.

Racism: "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized."

You mention psychology.  OK. What makes a person attractive?   It isn't looks? It isn't shared history? It isn't financial stablity? It isn't a sense that the partner would make a good parent?  It isn't sexiness?   As a scientist, I believe in evolution. Evolution enforced by racial marriage quotas, for example, would be a very strange kind of evolution.  Evolution assumes some level of free agency.   I don't believe in a "benevolent" dictator enforcing corrections on long evolved partly subconscious decision making.

As for the radio show not being a Science show.  Of course, it isn't science.  It's radio.  Radio for the masses.  Radio for the scientifically illiterate.  I wouldn't expect a radio host to be well versed in science and psychology.  As I said, I thought that the conversation was insensitive and in extremely poor taste. But the underlying revelations are the same. These radio guys expressed themselves in the way that they knew how.  And perhaps that means that they deserve to be off the air because their ability for nuanced expression is severely lacking.  I'm just saying that research shows that they are not alone in how they feel about dating people of different colors/backgrounds.  Why this is so, it cannot be determined if we shoot people for saying that this is how they feel.

How many of you out there have dated Black women?  Just curious.  Y'all seem to think that you're perfectly free from racism.  Just wondering.  No one has to answer. I'm not going to get into my relationship history, except to say that the Bible commands believers to only marry other true believers; I make no apologies for drawing a line there.

Pominville was who we needed to keep around last year, and even this year depending on how he was holding up. Hell Vanek would of been useful last year as well. They were both proud to be Buffalo Sabres, to wear our jersey, and fight for the fans.

I was thinking exactly the same a few days ago.  Pominville and Gionta before him.  Elder statesmen, who could still play a pretty good game, in contrast to Okposo.

GMJB also tried to have guys with playoff and Stanley Cup experience in Wilson, Sheary, Elie...

Do you guys still not get that it wasn't Rich who was speaking? Rich said one word, actually barely a word: K or OK. He didn't laugh. He knew it was wrong. What was he supposed to do? The producer could have killed the mic but didn't.

Terry said something truly racist (using today's standard) not long after buying the Sabres. Maybe he should be canceled.

Excellent points.  And it gets back to the Sabres' culture where anyone who says anything amiss gets canned.   That's what happened to JMTM, right?  And what happened with Patty?

The NHL needs to do a sit-down intervention with the Pegulas.  You're last in the league, but you're not picking up anyone on waivers.  Your goalie situation sucks, so you trade away a goalie when you lack depth.  You sign $8M players instead of building a new team like Florida did this year (and like Jason even tried to do the last few years - Vesey types).

What an idiot. Even if it was a joke it was in incredibly poor taste. In this day and age you really need to think before you speak. Know your audience. Even then you probably shouldn’t joke using racially insensitive material

Like totally.  Wow.  In this day and age, people should know that speaking honestly from the heart is unacceptable.  Sure, saying it on radio is dumb.  But studies have shown that Whites, Asians, and even Blacks men find Black women the least attractive.

    Here's one such abstract:

    Quote

Using data from 6070 U.S. heterosexual internet dating profiles, this study examines how racial and gender exclusions are revealed in the preferences of black, Latino, Asian and white online daters. Consistent with social exchange and group positions theories, the study finds that whites are least open to out-dating and that, unlike blacks, Asians and Latinos have patterns of racial exclusion similar to those of whites. Like blacks, higher earning groups including Asian Indians, Middle Easterners and Asian men are highly excluded, suggesting that economic incorporation may not mirror acceptance in intimate settings. Finally, racial exclusion in dating is gendered; Asian males and black females are more highly excluded than their opposite-sex counterparts, suggesting that existing theories of race relations need to be expanded to account for gendered racial acceptance.

But, you know, that whole science thing is not allowed in a Thought Police Communist Era.    In contrast to others, I KNOW Physics.  I know science. And science can NOT function in a world where open and honest dialog is not allowed.  Was this radio conversation really insensitive? Sure.  I wouldn't say it on radio.  But as you can see, I'm not afraid to tell the truth.   A fact's a fact from Nome to Rome.

Oh great, the politics sports channel is now encroaching on one of the few bastions of escapes left. Wpnderful, I fully expect to hear 24/7 on game telecasts that I'm racist just for being born, call me excited 😞

NBC wasn't exactly non-woke. But Disney owns ESPN, and Disney destroyed the Star Wars movie franchise with their agendas.

And now ESPN means not one single free Sabres game on TV anymore.  Actually, it means NO free hockey games on TV anymore.  I miss being able to watch CHML and CTV and Radio-Canada for Hockey Night in Canada.  No more Leafs-Habs, no more Sabres Habs, no more Sabres Nordiques, no more Habs-Nordiques....No more fun 3.8 goals per game with bench clearing brawls. Don Cherry. Wowie Housley...but I digress.

  12. Let's look at former GMs and their qualifications:

Punch Imlach: long history in the game as a player, coach and was a great GM (starting in AHL and working up).

John Anderson:was a scout working under Punch for 10 years in Toronto, and came over with Punch... [from Wikipedia] "was a Danish-Canadian former ice hockey executive who was the interim General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres from December 4, 1978, to June 11, 1979, taking his team to the 1979 playoffs."  [Lost 1980 US Presidential Election to Ronald Reagan, a distant third behind him and President Carter with only 7% of the vote --- 🙃 ]

Scotty Bowman: from Quebec (knew hockey culture), CHL coach, hockey legend as winning coach of Blues and Canadiens

Gerry Meahan: Born in the big TO,  won Memorial Cup with Marlboros in OHL, played pro for the Buffalo Sabres, got a law degree and did some work for Scotty, named Sabres AGM in 1984

John Muckler: played pro in the ECHL, started as player/coach way back in 1959, was assistant coach and then head coach to insanely successful Edmonton Oilers. Was Sabres head coach before taking over as GM. [We had a president in those days: Larry Quinn]

Darcy Regier: played in WHL, drafted by California and played for Cleveland Barons and some games for Islanders. Worked for legendary Al Arbour and Bill Torrey.  Was assistant Islanders GM under Don Maloney, and then interim GM for Islanders.

Tim Murray: NHL Scout, director of Player Personal, AHL GM, Ottawa AGM.

Jason Botterill: fringe NHL player, got MBA. Worked for NHL, worked as a scout, AHL GM, Penguins AGM.

Kevyn Adams: 1st round pick, won Stanley Cup as player, was player-agent briefly, assistant coach for Sabres, Sr VP of Business Admin for Sabres in 2019.  AND he is a LOCAL boy! Yay!

Does anyone not belong on this list?

I dont know about anyone else, but i feel any owner of any team should be more like a silent partner and leave the running of the team to a hired professional. they should certainly be involved in any decision regardless financial stuff but the actual hockey game stuff, should not be touched by the owners.

This Is not the sabres specifically, im saying every professional team.

Sure owners can be very knowledgeable, but unless the owner was a former player/coach, they shouldnt be involved in the operations

It's like when TP said, (from memory):  "If we get [Taylor] Hall, then we're not just thinking about making the playoffs; we're talking about going for the Stanley Cup".   That was a very naive statement, and has proven to be grossly inaccurate.   TP is not a hockey guy.  And we didn't hear KP say this kind of stuff either.  From the 1000 foot level, it really seems like TP is the "owner" and KP, as the wife, is day-to-day manager [AFAIK, we're not privy to any pre-nups et cetera which would preclude the typical 50%-50% split in any assets acquired in the marriage. So, AFAIK she is a de facto owner too].    GMKA was probably so tickled pink at having Hall wanting to come to Buffalo that he didn't have the nerve to explain to Terry that signing Hall put the team in a major cap bind for signing the complementary players that they obviously lack(tough, gritty, hard-to-play-against kind of guys).

I agree 100% that we need a president of hockey operations.  When they first bought the team, we had Patty, GMTM, and Craig Patrick as a hockey consultant.    Now we just have GMKA and an obviously tuned-out/incompetent  RaKru.     We went from great communicators, to poor communicators (Housley & JBot), to decent communicators.  It's not the communications per se, stupid; it's the hockey decisions.   But Terry says that communication is important while his own communication skills suck, and Kim rarely says much, especially not in an authoritative owner manner.  Maybe it's just because I don't live in Buffalo that I don't hear more of what they say and do.

After watching my one annual free Sabres game, all I can say is that the Amerks are infinitely more exiting to watch.  AHL hockey is 2x the energy and 1/2 the emphasis on "systems".  It's like rockem-sockem, play-off pin-ball.  Just give Bryson some time in the NHL and this attitude will be likely drained out of him too.

    Yes.  Thanks for the reminder.

GMTM was the first post tank failure at the rebuild.

GMTM got them a #1LW, #1C, #1RW, best in the league #2C, and a #1G.  GMTM just blew it when he drafted Nylander instead of Sergachev, MacAvoy, Chychrun, or Fabbro. [He apparently totally blew it when he used the B word in relation to Kim.]

Then in same draft, he traded away an NHL(6-7) D in Pysyk to draft Asplund who hasn't really cracked the line-up yet, even as 4C. He missed on DeBrincat, but 29 other teams did too.  Sam Girard was drafted in the 2nd round of the same 2016 draft.  Oh the possibilities.

  15. 8 minutes ago, Norcal said:

Nah. They have a group of young guys who need minutes.

They only had Samuelsson on the ice for like half the game last night, even more than Fitzgerald it seems.   Laaksonen gets a healthy amount of ice time too.

I can't readily find the official ice-time stats.

They are playing Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen too much. That's why Ullmark got injured; HCRK, the genius that he his, overplayed him, IMHO.

  16. Don't both Ron Francis and JBot have histories with Skinner?  JBot signed Skinner.  Expansion teams often lack for stars.  Sure it's $9M/yr, but

he'd help generate excitement for a new fanbase, especially compared to the normal scrubs that expansion teams get.  You can't compare to

    Las Vegas because 1. it was a surprise to everyone how well that team played, 2. teams made bad trades with Vegas to try to keep certain players;

GMs should have learned from that experience.

It would seem that the Sabres are hoping that Skinner will waive his NMC for the expansion draft.

  17. Depression. That's my guess.  It's 2020 all over again.  Lockdowns remain.  NHL players are living in small bubbles.  The Sabres totally suck once again.   At the risk of getting banned/fired, bubble players probably aren't having lots of dates.  Jack might have family affected and locked down, etc.   Since the Sabres problems are mostly mental, HIPAA and league rules probably put a straight-jacket on what Kruger can say.   Angry but careless dispassionate play speak depression.  And it doesn't have to be a deep depression to affect things.

On a related note, Skinner said that it's normal for people from all walks of life to suffer from dry stretches.  He's living in an alternate universe.   People without $9mill/year *guaranteed* contracts are fired after just a few weeks of a bad stretch, sometimes just a few hours, NOT YEARS LIKE SKINNER HAS.   If your job is to wait tables and you piss off a table...or your job is to put widgets into boxes and you totally fail to meet your quota, see ya later baby.   The NHL needs to get rid of guaranteed contracts just like the NFL has.  Buffalo deserves better.

Vince Dunn is on the block.  I know that it would be dealing with the devil, but what about a Tage for Vince swap.  Let St. Louis have its trash prospect back for an

established LEFT d-man with established skill and Sabres ties.  It's gotta be better than playing Montour and others on their off side.  Thoughts?
