  1.

The Staal trade isn't really a good comparable IMHO because Carolina was the only trading partner -- he told the Rangers he wanted to play with Eric, and he had leverage because he was going to be a UFA, so they pretty much had to get what they could get from Carolina.

O'Reilly has the exact same leverage as Staal did. If he decides he wants to play in TO, he tells the Avs he will not negotiate with anyone but the Leafs. Toronto becomes the only team willing to pay a premium and that premium only has to be a tick more than what the highest non-premium bidder offers. The Avs pretty much have to take it.

    You're assuming he has a place-based preference. I don't think he does. I think he has a money-based preference.

I think it would be foolish to think that O'Reilly's agent isn't already looking hard at good fits for him.

Who can pay prime dollar? Who can promise an ideal spot in the line-up? Where does he want to live?

I bet there is a short list in place already and the agent will force Colorado's hand at the draft.

I'm sure Murray has already made Roy well aware of his interest.

And if he is as savvy as I think he is, he is already doing his best to show how Buffalo could tick all the boxes.

  2. It's not that the Avs won't deal him, it's that nobody else will give up big value for what amounts to a rental. For the Avs to get Staal or better value the extension will need to be in place with the trade partner. Otherwise? Send them a 2nd round pick because that what a rental's worth.

There's no need to move Zemgus to get RoR. None. The Avs have 0 leverage.

Which is why Hodgson, Grigs and the late first might work.

The Avs are unlikely to get a better offer without a commitment and I'm willing to bet O'Reilly is willing to commit to very few teams, if any. He has the Avs over a barrel

Pegula/Murray may roll the dice because:

    1) they can afford his extravagant demands.

    2) they can offer him the leadership role he craves

    3) they will have a good young core he can be part of that includes a McEichel

    4) they have a sneaking "suspicion" he is open to signing here.

  3.

SECOND EDIT: Wait. So, ROR *is* signed through next season? Well, I guess the same reasoning applies. Girgs is on his entry-level deal, and is an RFA in 2016.

O'Reilly will be a UFA at the end of next season and is highly unlikely to re-sign in Denver.

And how can you be ambivalent about Zemgus?

Which goes back to my post that no trade will happen if the Avs don't grant permission for a team to negotiate an extension in advance of the trade.  If no agreement is reached no trade will be made.  Hence, RoR has a no-trade clause. If he doesn't want to be traded somewhere all he has to do is not agree to an extension. The trade will never happen.  For all we know this has happened already.

A trade definitely will happen whether permission to negotiate happens or not because the Avs cannot let O'Reilly walk for free.

The question is at what point can they maximize their assets. Roy and Sakic are in a tough spot.

  4. Girgensons and Pysyk for O'Reilly and Colorado's first ( a lottery pick)?

O'Reilly is an upgrade on Girgs, we take a Killington or Werenski to fill Pysyk's hole in the depth chart.

Avs consider themselves fortunate to get Girgs for a player that is going to walk, and they improve their blueline next year.

Is Girgensons on the table for anybody, in any kind of deal, or does he still embody all our hopes and dreams?

Remember Tim Murray, Zero ###### Given
  5. It's gonna be tough to convince me on the Myers/Bogosian argument when Bogo just played 32 plus minutes in one of the few sabres wins in recent memory. Good luck to Tyler Myers but I'll take Bogosian all day

He's certainly shown more than the Jets fans give him credit for.

They make him sound like a tougher Gorges, which aint bad, but he's been better than that.

how he plays as a Jet Sabre is all i am concerned about...

Then I think we are both going to be very happy with this deal.

Is it possible the Jets may not have given Bogosian a chance to show his full potential because of injuries and their depth on defence?

  6. Benoit... looks...

    good...

I have to agree. I blame Bogey.

That ref is blind.  Or on the Philly payroll.  Geez that was an obvious high stick.

I haven't cared about the refs all season until tonight. Brutal.

Is something wrong with my TV or did birds just fly by?

    So that wasn't just me.

This has been a oddly entertaining game.

    It was....

I thought I was really drunker than I am

..and LGR was a reason. Didn't even miss Anna (though I hope she's OK.)

    Neuvirth sucks in the shootout

Doing the splits every time is not a good strategy. Still, he played well and I'm happy he got the W.

    OMG! 32:23 for Bogo! Damn...

Holy ######. Cant blame Teddy for that coaching decision.

    Zach was excellent.

The team worked hard, look more like the Nolan team I expected this season.

Glad I PVRed that one, it was worth watching.

  7. Like the roster prediction thread showed, the most gaping hole on next year's depth chart is first-line right wing.

And the most needed piece is a strong, two-way guy to shield Reinhart and McEichel.

Add in the age and I don't think there is a better fit for the Sabres than O'Reilly.

In my view the price for Kane and O'Reilly would be similar — the both are highly thought of and they both have baggage.

The price on O'Reilly won't get too high unless a team really thinks they can sign him.

And I will pull out the Craig Oster card, Murray's friend and O'Reilly's agent.

Grigorenko and this year's first have to be on the table, but you've got to think the Avs will want a D. I'm not keen on dealing Risto or Zad or Bogey, and I'm not sure if Pysyk or McCabe gets it done. I wonder if they have any interest in Gorges?

Another interesting wildcard piece to consider is next year's first. It's probably a lottery pick. Is Murray willing to bet next year's team will be that much better?

  8. Look, despite real advances in making the Sabres a nicer workplace, everybody has to admit Terry has floundered as an owner so far.

He tried to buy a winner with a couple ill-conceived free agent contracts, kept Darcy beyond his due date and failed miserably in picking Pat Lafontaine to lead/be a figurehead for the hockey department. He also decided to flush two full seasons down the drain in the hopes of nailing some elite talent in the draft.

I'm willing to forgive his early mistakes if this descent into hell pays off, because the sad reality of this plan is I have no other choice. I'm happy he OKed Tim Murray to guide the process and hope he learned his lesson from the Leino disaster and keeps out of Tim's way.

But believe me, if Kane, McEichel or the other proceeds of this strategy aren't making watching the Sabres more enjoyable next year though, you can mail me a pitchfork.

  9. Kid should keep his mouth shut and play. I agree with Nolan on that part. And the answer to your question, yes some, not all of that sounds like whining.

And Ink it sounds a lot more like whining when I hear him speak those statements versus you writing them. It comes across as whiny when you hear him asking. Fair or not.

    Sounds like Hodgson actually lol

Larsson played well again for the most part tonight against Jersey.

The kid battles, gets in the way and understands possession hockey.

Got caught out on a shift way too long and I don't think he saw the ice again.

  10. It's only two games, but Bogosian again looked very good.

I haven't seen that mix of mobility, reliability and physical edge on this team since Mike Ramsey.

I can't say I am expecting him to be a number one defenceman, but I sure like the way he seems to want the role.

Long-term, it looks like we should at least be counting on him to be a Jay McKee.

If another McKee is the second-best player we get in this trade, nice work Tim Murray.
