  1. St Louis throwing blanks so far. Chicago has scored 4 goals on 27 shots. St. Louis has nothing to show for 21 shots on goal midway thru the 3rd period.

It's odd because although Miller was pulled, it seems a majority of the goals were a result of him bumping into his D and being pulled out of position, odd deflections or just careless positioning by the team in front of him.

  2. Such doom and gloom.

This is not an unreasonable way to project our asset list into future NHL roles:

    Buffalo 1st 2014 Buffalo 1st 2015 NYI 1st Ristolainen Zadorov

Joel Armia Mikhail Grigorenko JT Compher Pysyk McCabe

Hudson Fasching Zemgus Girgensons Nick Baptiste Ruhwedel

Nicolas Deslauriers Johan Larsson Daniel Catenacci

Some of those guys won't reach their projections. A few might exceed them.

But we can afford a few busts, because we have no less than 10 other assets that also have a reasonable chance of becoming NHLers — not long shots, but an actual chance:

    St. Louis 1st 2015, Buffalo 2nd 2014, Buffalo 2nd 2015, Winnipeg 2nd 2014, Minnesota 2nd 2014, NYI 2nd 2015,

Connor Hurley, Justin Bailey, William Carrier, Gustav Possler

And we have Myers, Hodgson, Ennis and Foligno all proven NHLers and young enough to be part of the core.

We're certainly rolling the dice on these kids.

    But I like our odds.

I came here to say something to this effect. Well stated.

  3. I think you're failing to understand the difference for between what's in the league's best interest and what's in a fan's best interest. Sure the fan's don't have to buy tickets or merchandise and of course they'd want a shot a McDavid, but them not buying the league's products, not watching the games---->not getting sponsors, hurts the league.

Except that Buffalo has recently had some of the best ratings per capita in the league in terms of viewers. While i understand that tanking in general could negatively affect the leagues bottom-line, i think it'd be wise on their part to capitalize what they have here. A very competitive team in Buffalo could be VERY GOOD for the league in a few years. A small market team that can afford to spend spend spend and compete with the big markets is great for the NHL.

  4. Good points BS2010, but which team wouldn't want a superstar (potentially) if one were available?

I can't think of one that wouldn't, so I'm right there with you. Judging from all the talk about altering the draft lottery I'd say that's the likely case. I'm more or less considering the probability of us being the worst team in the league once again next year. This is a historical failure in terms of performance for this franchise. What are the odds we come close to it again next year? I wish i could pick GMTMs brain and figure out just what his trajectory is. We have an astonishing amount of cap space going into FA this year.

I guess thats the excitement of having a GM that hasnt been here for 14 years. I really have no idea whats going to happen next year. It could go either way IMO. especially if measures to alter the draft order are taken for 2015.

Side question, is anyone aware of when rule changes would need to be implemented to alter the 2015 draft process? I would assume early summer of this year but i have no idea.

  5. So has anyone else wondered if maybe this years draft is just getting a bad rep for talent just because of whats on the horizon for next year? Or are these kids really just not up to speed with what the top of the draft has seen the last few years? Or maybe the problem is depth? I've just been thinking about how two picks in the top 5 could really be a game changer for us. As much as i love the idea of McDavid / Eichel, IF GMTM does his homework are they really necessary?

Ted seems like a coach that can get water out of a rock. With our pipeline do we really need those superstars? Just looking at the Blues, they seem to be winning by comittee, with no real standout offensive "superstars". They just have a ton of really good guys. When i think about Coho, Ennis, Pysyk, Girgs, Risto, Zadorov, Armia, Grigorenko, Foligno, Baptiste, Fasching, Carrier, McCabe, Myers, Ullmark, and any two of Reinhart, Bennette, or Drasaitle, thats a pretty stocked cupboard. Obviously McDavid or Eichel wouldnt hurt at all but does it really all depend on landing one of those two?

  6. And THIS is better than fighting for a playoff spot and then having your team in the playoffs? At least then i would be watching unlike the last two months.

Sorry guys a two year or more tank for some possible high end draft picks is not worth it to me. Odds are in five years the top teams of today will still be the top teams then.

Good organizations win - not tank.

This is a fair assessment to a point, but don't forget that the penguins, blues, kings, bruins, blackhawks, and avalanche were all a little more than sub par not 6 years ago. Winning teams can stay competitive if run correctly. But you're not going to compete well with this team plus free agency any time soon either.

  7. absolutely. and hopefully they did their research on deslauriers and fasching as well and it works out too. also interested to see what Hurley does next year at Notre Dame…haven't heard all that much about him

I think that was the genius in selecting Murray as the new GM. He's a real scouts scout. I would really like to see another draft covered by blue and gold. I'm very curious to see what the dynamic between Tim and Devine is going to look like / looks like.

    Fasching Compher Baptiste

    Bailey Hurley Carrier

    Risto Zadorov

It will take four years before we can really start to pass judgement, but that looks like it could beat many team's entire prospect list in one freaking draft.

Now imagine a few more of these drafts going in similar directions with some higher caliber picks. This is the exact reason why i am in favor of #tanknation. You become a team that can find diamonds in the rough in later rounds and you become an extremely deep and talented team in a very short period of time (relatively speaking). It's these lack of depth picks that i attribute to consistent suckitude in edmonton. Are top picks instrumental? absolutely! But what good are your 3 consecutive first round picks without a talented team around them?

  8. Say what you will about Pegula, but his expansion of the scouting staff seems to be paying off some incredible dividends. Compher and Baptiste are looking like steals this season.

Edit: Not to mention Possler and Ullmark

  9. Seems like a low risk high reward guy.

Enough intangibles coupled with size that he could be a decent bottom 6 player if he turns out just OKAY.

Injuries really could have masked a diamond in the rough here as well. Seems like he put a pretty big emphasis on improving his skating this year. Nice to see individual drive like that from a kid his age. You can never have too many kids with work ethics like that.

  10. It was his sister that tweeted the hashtag, as well. Seems entirely possible that he's using the KHL to push his way to Buffalo. Especially considering the man who drafted him is here now.

It's so funny to me seeing random internet folk (and i mean that in the best way possible) discussing a few people i went to school with and know personally. I'd love to see him in Buffalo though. He's got a fantastic compete level.

  11. I had to refresh the page to get the feed to work the first time. And it's still supposed to be about 2 million miles out. The interesting thing is that its classified as "potentially dangerous" and they have lost sight of it a while back, so it hasn't been seen in a while. It'll be a little more concerning if they don't see it where its supposed to be tonight.

  12. LOL... I'll have you know I grew up shoveling snow and still shovel my own snow. I actually enjoy the exercise of it.

and now to the heart of your 'seriously dude' comment:

I was only reacting to the fact that he grew up in Edmonton and his family is still there. He had more to say about his love for Edmonton than Buffalo. He is one of the few tradeable assets on this club. Seems like a win for everyone if we could exchange one of their 'need a change of scenery forwards' for one of ours.

Not directed solely at you but I'm a bit confused by the whole move Ennis mentality.

Even Howard and Jeremy were talking about it at the beginning of the week. I really don't understand how he registers as a "change of scenery" guy. He is EASILY one of the most offensively gifted forwards on this team, if not the single most talented. If the rationale here is he isn't putting up points, then every single player should be seen as needing a change in scenery. I blame the lower numbers of players like Ennis on the overall lack of talent this team has as a whole.

There are very few players in this league that can create offense solely on their own. And when you only have enough talent for one and a half dangerous lines, it's very easy to focus on those players and shut them down. We need depth with talent, and you don't get that by trading one of your 3 competent forwards.

No Bennett? anyone know why that is? i was looking forward to getting a look at him in some game action tonight.

  14.

I'll take Shane Prince or Tobias Lindberg and a pick for Steve Ott.

As much as i would hate to lose Ott, I'd love to see Shane here, as I went to Highschool with him and he always schools us when Binghamton plays Rochester.

Not to mention he's quite the dynamic player.

  15. I sure as hell don't understand what you are saying but Liger is right.

So as long as we finish last (about the same odds as the sun rising tomorrow) we would get the #1 pick if NJ or us win the lottery. I think!!

brain is fried from studying for finals, i apologize for that rather ridiculous run on sentence. made sense in my head hahaha

  16. I do believe that the lottery occurs as normal. If NJD won the pick they would forfeit it like usual.

so its like the lottery never happened and they'd pick 1st and whoever finishes dead last picks 2nd but since they cant use the first overall then the guy in dead last picks whoever they want?

  17. Anybody given any thought to the whole NJ situation? as it stands right now they would sit at 10 in the draft lottery giving them a 2.1% shot at the top pick. But they are required to forego that pick this year due to the whole kovalchuck situation. Do their chances get dispersed to the rest of the teams or does the lucky team that finishes 16 and sneaks into the playoffs also luck out and get a .5% shot at the first overall pick? anyone know what the leagues plan to account for this could be?
