  1. Not sure where you got that I was making a comparison between the Sabres and Colts. It was a general point about tanking and how some think winning is always better.

I was using the comparison to disprove some of the idea that tanking for a pick might only work in some special situations
  2. And I'm sure both the franchise and the fans are completely devastated they drafted Luck instead of winning two extra times.

(Yes, I know a generational QB has no hockey equivalent)

Its a little bit easier to tank in the NFL when its a guarantee that with the worst record you get the #1 pick and not just the best chance in the lottery.

Its also much easier to have to go through 1 season of being the worst to being right back on track the next year.

The Colts had been one of the best AFC teams since they acquired Peyton Manning in the draft, he was hurt for one full season and they get Luck. Had they not gotten the #1 pick in the draft, they would have still had Peyton Manning and still went on to be one of the better AFC teams. Thats much easier to swallow then a mediocre fringe playoff team for what, 7 years since Drury/Briere, to continuing to get worse and being a complete embarrassment now. The Colts already had a playoff team in place with a good QB playing, they just had to replace 1 player with another to keep going. The Sabres have to do alot more, and need alot of luck/help to get to a point they haven't really been in almost 10 years.

The Colts might be a good comparrison if say next year Crosby goes down and the pens suck to get the #1 pick, and then move Crosby

  3. "Deepest," "one of the deepest." Whichever. Some say we have THE deepest, some have us among the deepest. Considering hockeysfuture (for one example) had us as the EIGHTH deepest BEFORE the draft or acquiring Larsson/Hackett... There's not a lot to be excited for in Buffalo, but if you try to deny that our prospect pool is incredibly deep and talented then you're trying way too hard to be negative...

And at one time they had a deep prospect pool that include such talents as Pominville, Roy, Vanek, Miller, etc, Where did that get them again? Sorry if I don't get overly excited because some guys at a website think we have guys that could be good in the future playing in the minors (or on this roster currently)
  4. Sure, but we've got the deepest prospect pool. I think it was hockey prospectus that said we have the best prospect pool of any team since the early 90s. Every team has prospects, but there's an obvious difference in level of prospects and amount of them...

    Thats very debatable
  5. Not getting carried away. I legitimately believe it. I think in 3-4 years the team will be back in the playoffs, 5-6 years it will start being a legitimate threat and 7-8 years they'll be competing for the Stanley Cup. It's hard to project how our talent is going to develop, but we have so much of it that some of it HAS to turn into legitimate NHL players.

This is coming from a guy who always used to say no Buffalo team will ever win anything. I'm the extreme pessimist and don't think either team ever really gets anything right. But the Sabres have too much young talent not to do something.

Its the same with every team though. all teams have prospects and guys that are going to develop and could turn into legitimate stars. Only difference is most teams will continue to build around them and get better while Buffalo takes the wait and see approach hoping that everyone develops and can just use what they have to build a winner
  6. During one of the breaks in the Leafs game last night they talked about that hit and said it wasn't as bad as the hit later on by the sharks player on Morrow and I somewhat agree. The hit that sent Boyle out on the stretcher had a bad result, but that had more to do with how he fell into the boards then it being cheap or an intent to injure. The one later on to Morrow into the boards was bad and deserves some time

  7. @TSNBobMcKenzie

Asham and Biron (NYR) both clear waivers.

As expected, Pronger's career is over: http://www.philly.co...m_confirms.html

Not a surprise about Pronger, what will be interesting is to see what happens now with his cap hit, will the league continue to allow them to place him on LTIR? i would assume they could as long as he does not turn around and sign retirement papers. I don't think theres language in the CBA to define just how "Long Term" LTIR is permitted for....
  8. And this is eaxctly what makes me break out in cold sweat all over.

Think about it - I think most people would agree the dreaded "core" was pretty much a very talented group, player by player.

Roy, Pominville, Connolly, Miller, Myers, Stafford. Add Vanek to that mix, I think most people would agree you'd have been drafting rather well. Player by player, that is.

As it turned out though, you put these guys on the same team, and you end up between 9th and 11th every year.

So now, we're supposed to go through an extended period of "suffering", just so the guy who failed miserably at putting together a succesful team through the draft the first time around, can have another go at it - I have to say, *this* is my only problem with this rebuild :

    Darcy Regier.

*Edit - I realise Darcy din't draft Timmy, however he did trade for him.

I don't blame that core for where they ended up every year, it was a good core with some very good players

The problem is that they didn't surround them with additional talent to help them succeed. Darcy would get the odd "token veteran" each season (Teppo, Grier, etc) but he refused to use any of those in the "Core" to try and improve with trades, or bring in additional talent to fix weak spots. It was always plug and fill on the cheap and bring up more kids

  9. Agree on the second point for sure.

Heck I agree on the first point as well. This league allows goals where you plow through a goalie showing no creativity at all yet get upset when a kid shows an artists touch. Sure its what 7-2 or something at that time but who cares ? Teams run it up all the time.

I would rather he try something like that in a blow out game then in a close one where I need him to score a goal. Sure it might look bad that he is scoring with a goal like that, but he is taking more of a chance of missing by doing it then if he just shot from there
  10. We didn't even interview Vigneault, Torts, or any of the other "hot" coaching candidates...not sure why you think Laviolette's availability would be different.

Because at the time, they already had their coach and weren't looking for a change. Do people really believe that RR was not the permanent guy once they let Ruff go?

If I were a Flyers fan I'd be feeling pretty pessimistic right now. They might not make the playoffs this year. Who the heck is even playing goal for them?

mason, the former Blue Jacket, and Ray Emery
  11. Clemmensen's been practicing for the past 2 weeks. They originally said they were looking for another goaltender because they didn't expect Clemmensen to be back that quickly. By picking up Thomas, I think they are looking for insurance for Markstrom, in my opinion they used Clemmensen as an excuse to go after a starting goaltender.

Then it sounds like Clemmenson is ready to return, but they feel that Thomas is an upgrade over him and better to work with Markstrom then
  12. Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger 3m

Waivers: Fla places Scott Clemmensen. Bos: Kevan Miller on Waivers. NJ places Alexander Urbom on Waivers. Edm's Ben Eager on Waivers.

I wonder if Pitts picks up Scott Clemensons off waivers.

Pitts could use the 2mil in credit from Vokoun to pick up the 1.2mil for clemenson (that gets divided over the year but you know what I mean)

Is it Clemmenson thats injured and the reason why they picked up Thomas? I can't remember the situation there

"I hear the Pominville camp is looking for a long-term deal north of $5 million per – something the Wild has been trying to crack down, especially since the team wants to make certain in a few years it can afford to re-sign potential key entry-level expiring guys like Charlie Coyle and Jonas Brodin and because next summer, it would like to potentially pursue a top free agent, maybe one who used to star at the University of Minnesota."

Any ideas on who they are referring to?

Maybe the Sabres should look at a deal with the Wild, Vanek to the Wild for Pommers $5mil+ for Pommers is a good deal, and if they will lose Vanek to the Wild anyways..................
  13. IF Fleury tanks... Ryan Miller... eh screw it. Go Sabres and screw the rest of the league!!!!

They would have to send back salary, or have the Sabres agree to eat a big chunk of Millers to do it, Pens are pretty tight to the cap IIRC

Saw yesterday they said they are looking, but not at Bryz as a replacement even though he could come cheap since their rivals the Flyers are paying him a nice chunk of change still

  14. and one is wearing a Kessel jersey...

While everyone else on the leafs bench were hitting their sticks against the boards to "clap" while he was being removed from the ice, Kessel (if you see the video) basically just held his there against the board. Guess he only swings his sticks at players, doesn't want to injure the boards at his bench...........

Did Orr pull Parros down with him intentionally, or did he instinctively grab the jersey as he was falling to soften his own fall to the ice. We'll never know.

hard to say, I wasn't refering to it to say that Orr was being dirty though, just that many Laughs fans that love their tough guy want to make it out that Orr knocked Parros out with his hands of steel.......
  15. Pacioretty got hurt too?

looked like the Leafs may have passed by him to fast and the wind injured him. That looked like the softest hit I have ever seen in a hockey game.

As for Parros, seen people saying broken jaw and concussion, but I think it will just be a concussion that will keep him out for a while. Colton Orr (The guy Laughs fans all think is going to just destroy Scott next time they meet) didn't knock out Parros with a punch, it was the jersey grab/hang on while falling that pulled Parros off his feet and chin first into the ice knocking him out. Throw in the moustache probably throwing off his balance due to its size, if he would have extended the facial hair a bit more into a full beard over the creepy 70s porn star/child abducter 'stache he may have had some padding on his chin and not been knocked out

  16. He was blatantly and admittedly ignoring the facts, even when called on it. But I do agree he was playing to the Canadien kiddies...

loved it when Ron basically told him that Scott was already out there when Carlysle sent out Kessel and Cherry just blew him off like that wasn't important cause it would mess up his rant.

Cherry is an idiot whiner who plays to his audience, says nothing bad about Kessel hacking away at Scott while Scotts tied up with someone else, but basically praises him for "standing up to the big bully" and says that children should take a lesson from this about bullying at school basically

  17. JVR scores the 1st goal of the season on a 5-3 PP.

That was a very weak goal too, trickled in through Prices 5-hole

I'm starting to think Price is the #2 most overrated goalie in the league right behind Fleury. He always seems to use the excuse that its his equipment/pads, or his goalie coach........

  18. Fine by me. ###### OSP.

In other news, "location" for a hockey team, is better in Buffalo than in Sunrise, Fla. Did the deal include some crazy arena rights or something?

When it was first announced that the team was being sold to NY businessmen last week I remember reading about how it includes some deals with the arena and that is what makes it worth the money. They basically said that the arena deal is worth losing money over the hockey team.

Broward County owns the arena, the Panthers have a lease through 2028.

Let's not forget, Golisano said he offered a 'discounted' price for the Sabres under the condition the team stayed in BFLO. I don't remember all the details on that, but I remember it being talked about when the team was sold.

I remember that too, he said that he made the deal because he had other offers, but he was only making a deal with someone who would keep the team in Buffalo. No one else making offers were willing to agree to that
  19. so, just 30 months after the Sabres sell for $189M, the FLORIDA PANTHERS sell for a reported $250M.

Pegula totally hosed OSP on that deal.

If its like real estate, Location, Location, LOCATION!

I think the difference could be found in the value of the venue associated with the team. I have heard that the arena is a huge money maker on other events that it makes losing money on the Panthers worth the investment
