I think it’s weird how some things fix themselves in people’s minds.

In it’s genesis, “don’t block the kids” was about force-feeding the Botterill leftovers Thompson, Cozens, Mittelstadt, Dahlin and Jokiharju key ice time to accelerate their development, build their confidence and see what the team had. By and large, it did what it was supposed to do. The team improved notably and those players pretty significantly.

Year 2, it was about giving the 2nd wave - Power, Quinn, Samuelsson, Krebs and Peterka - a similar opportunity, but in mid-roster roles. Those players were younger and predictably didn’t have the same impact. But they did show they belong, and the guys in front of them took big jumps. By and large people were happy with the improvement and were predicting good things ahead.

Year 3, “don’t block the kids” wasn’t really a thing. I mean, I guess it was in goal, but it also kinda worked in goal. Elsewhere, they didn’t hand jobs to Rousek and Rosen and Kulich and Ryan Johnson. Instead, they blocked the kids, re-signing Girgensons, and Okposo and Jost, and adding Robinson and Clifton and Greenway and Erik Johnson.

It wasn’t not blocking the kids that killed last year’s team, it was the fact that most of the above veterans sucked. And they sucked while Thompson, Tuch, Skinner and Cozens - all of whom all now count as vets - also sucked. The players who stepped up - UPL and Peterka - happened to be the kids who weren’t blocked.

This “not blocking” hasn’t been the problem for Adams some of you make it out to be.

Rather, it’s been putting together a consistent, focused and complete team.

I agree with the not putting together a consistant, focused and complete team but when you are still the youngest team in the league and also playing under an internal cap that the moronic owner insists on you are not really putting anyone in a position to win or develop and we can see that in the results. With the youngest team in the league I have to question if the ‘ don’t block the kids ‘ has actually stopped. Add the questionable coaching staff and coaching decisions and you have a perfect storm of mediocrity.  This team has to do better.

Yeah, I get that.  I too shook my head at the "blockers" concept.

ROR never really said he wanted out did he?  Even though he probably did want out.  The Sabres did stupid, and got rid of a guy that hates losing.

He was just sick of losing.

We need more of that hate to lose energy for sure. But its a fine line. Not to the point of wanting out but to the point of wanting to be a part of the solution. Accountability , yada yada yada.

No. He was out there right to the end and he set up a good attempt at a tying goal.  Playing with two lifetime 3rd line grinders in Nyquist and Sissons.  All are 30+.

It shows in the playoffs that having grown men on the team helps.  We need more.

What’s wrong with Canada having teams alive?  It’s their top sport.

Actually Punch I’ve been calling for an end to KAs moronic ‘ don’t block the kids ‘ rule for a couple seasons now. Its obvious when looking at any team that wins in this league that capable veterans are a staple of success. My comment about ROR didn’t have anything to do with his age. It was a shot at his comments when he left the Sabres. Actually I don’t blame him for wanting out of this shitshow.

What we want to see happen:

    1) Make serious changes to the bottom six.

    2) Move out a few defensemen and upgrade at least one of the top 4.

    3) Add a solid "#2 center" with upside

    4) Move Krebs for value

    What will happen:

    1) Rochester kids call up

    2) Worthless lackluster depth additions that have no cohesiveness with the team, and or have fallen off a cliff.

Kevyn Adams is a pathetic overeager mouthpiece and puppet for the Pegula's.  I'm sure he wants to do well in a perfect world, but he's too busy sucking off the taint of Terry.  It's a farse.

Tell us how you really feel lol. I actually agree with much of this but my feeling is Lindy wouldn’t have agreed to come back for the status quo. KA must improve the roster. We’ll see.

It makes me smile when the same fans who are passionately for or against a particular coaching candidate they’ve never met are furious because Adams targeted someone someone he knows very well, then simply went out and got him.

Or that it appears there was no due diligence. I wasn’t on board with it but have come around. If anything it appears KA has put himself in the crosshairs if Lindy doesn’t work out which I’m ok with too.

I can picture Friedmans heavy lower lip as I read that statement about Adams not contacting anyone. He does tend to throw things out there when he has nothing. Maybe he can do the work and ask his contacts in the coaching world who are currently without jobs if they were contacted.

  7. If Donnie didn’t drive the players hard in practice this past season to instil work ethic , speed, uptempo, etc. is it safe to assume its been the same for his entire coaching career whilst he’s been with the Sabres ? If so how is it that nobody including KA was aware of this ? We can safely assume that someone who came over from another org. Would have noticed the lackluster way these guys were going about their practices etc. why did it take this franchise so long to figure it out and why hasn’t there been change ? Apparently we’ve all been wasting our time following this team and expecting different results.🤷🏻‍♂️

Really?   The Devils were a playoff team and set a team record for points two season ago.  They just need a goalie

The Blues have a winning tradition and sell out every game.

Ottawa and Buffalo are about the same.  Buffalo has the Pegula factor which is not good.

Unfortunately it all starts with Terry. Until he changes or gets out of the way nothing will change with this team.

I don't disagree at all. It was a thing with the Sabres long before I came to Sabrespace. It's come up over the years many times. Nolan's lunch bucket crew were different but that's about it. My first choice is Gallant without question.

As for Granato, no need to get into it as it's done and over but he may have talked about accountability but he did not hold them accountable. Too much "growing and learning as a team" talk and too much calm and patient forgiveness along the way. Too much comfort.

I’ve said it before but Donnie was too much Kumbaya. Its human nature for many to take the easy route when presented with the choice of hardship or having something handed to you as the two paths to where you want to go. Hopefully the new coach can help mold our guys into resiliant warriors as opposed to the pampered child/men they sometimes appeared to be.

  10. Its the 13th season without playoffs and most here thought Skinners monty Python reporter joke thing was gut splitting entertainment. I didn’t. Maybe a couple others. This team has a bad case of the sillys and most are still young enough to split a gut at an unexpected fart. While all that was happening they could have been doing some soul searching and looking for ways to get better. They weren’t. Accountability from the coaching staff was non existant. That much was obvious. I look forward to a change.
