mrjsbu96 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Share Posted May 8, 2006 i could be wrong, but anyone that has played the game at least 20 years and still plays today, knows that the equipment that these guys wear today is like body armor. i don't think that shaefer had his arms/elbows up and it was more of timmy running in to his elbow. the pads 10-15 years ago did not have these hard, plastic caps and if that same hit happens 10-15 years ago it is probably not that big of a hit (take away timmy's concussion problems...) Not sure about the NHL, but I think they've gone the same way. However, most of the elbow pads I've seen recently (mine are 7 years old) are hard plastic covered by padding.
