Ruff coached 22 seasons. 11 he made the playoffs. 11 he missed the playoffs. He had 1 great coaching season and 4 missed playoffs over his last 5 coaching seasons.

I hope he brings some great assistants.

    Context missy

Dallas hadn't been to Playoffs since 2008. Ruff in three years had them in for 2014

Same with NJ, they sucked, rebuilt and they went to the Playoffs with the youngest Team. Ruff was runner up for Coach of the year last year.

With Sabres he was in Playoffs 8X with 4 Conference Championship games and Stanley Cup Final Stolen by the League

PR hire buries the headline: A competent veteran coach

    Veteran competence > upside potential.

    finally.

This is a team full of kids that seems to *CARE* about the PR. That’s the rub. For good or ill.

They’ll respect Ruff. He’ll do enough to get them in the playoffs.

Is he an amazing coach? No. Will his veteran experience mine SOME points over the course of 82? Yes.

    no stone unturned

800+ wins 5th all time is not Amazing

Had a Team to win in his Second year with Sabres for the Stanley Cup and the LEAGUE stole it.

Most Coaches would have failed and been a Alcoholic

He rebuilt the Sabres 3 times, new players and went to the Conference Championships all 3 times

Different coaching philosophy styles for sure. Lindy is a solid veteran coach, to deny that is ridiculous. But I hear you, and many others, that heavily question if he's "the right coach" to go on a cup run. I have faith in Lindy, his style is indeed accountability. Imho.

So the Sabres with 13 NO PLAYOFF SEASONS is on a CUP RUN????

Geez, I hope they can back in next year like McDermott!

    Who you kidding???????

This Roster on offense has 6 keepable players.

did the work - it’s an 88 point pace over 82

but it’s really a tale of 2 Lindys.

There’s been 8 seasons: his teams have averaged 99 points per, the 5 seasons they’ve had a winning record.

    they’ve averaged 70 points the other 3

You are NOT ok with 8 seasons of 99 points???

I mean sure we can go another round of Coaches then hire Ruff at 73 and 23 years of No Playoffs

    Sounds like a PLAN

To me it feels like a PR hire, not a hockey hire.

Who is more about HOCKEY than Lindy Ruff

63 and been around it since he was a KID

    Your comment is just STUPID

In NJ last year he was in the Playoffs with a very young team. The were 2nd I believe in the Conference. They won the 1st Round

That is NOT a has been!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welp.  Let’s see how it rolls…..

KA has a career riding on this.  If Lindy fails I don’t see KA working as a GM in the NHL again.

Well the last 3 hasn't with their HIRES

I really really hope Lindy is the guy to get this club back in the playoffs. I feel a bit apprehensive at this signing. My personal preference would have been Gallant or Berube but I did love Lindy once. I am afraid if this fails yet again, it will tarnish his history as Sabres coach and the club goes another season of no playoffs. I wish Coach Lindy all the best this upcoming season. Really hoping for "the old Lindy magic"! For all I know, maybe Gallant and Berube's agents already declined that their clients would come to Buffalo and I don't think Brind' Amour is leaving Carolina. God bless you Lindy- here's hoping for the best!!

He has 500+ wins as Sabres Coach. Take 3-4 years of flat out Tanking to tarnish Ruff

Wasn't Ruff the one COMPLETELY against the TANK?????

yet hiring the Franchises most established Coach/Player???

Guess you are the fan that wants The Bills record broke!

NOOOOO. STOP TRYING TO GET THE BAND BACK TOGETHER.

So you're OK with 13 years of losing, no Playoffs, hiring all kinds of Coaches and doing it all over again with people we don't know.

That is what you are saying RIGHT?

    How STUPID!!!

    Ruff knows Buffalo

He will end the 13 years of NO PLAYOFFS

What happens after that is Bonus right at this moment.

We will know what the future is when they Hire the Assistants and the Roster structure over the Summer.

I expect Pretty soon the players NOT wanted back will be told, SEE YA!

This is the exact opposite of what I'm looking for, this to me would show that they couldn't care less about winning NHL games, this would be nothing more than to get fans in seats to make Pegula money, nothing more and nothing less. Ruff has failed at evey gig he was given since being let go as the HC of the Buffalo Sabres and most notably with a young team like us in the new Jersey Devils.

For me to take this organization seriously it has to hire a proven winning head coach, I don't care what it costs, I don't care who has to sell their soul to get him here but there are only 32 HC gigs in the NHL, I'm sure you can find someone whether that's Brindamour, Berube, Gallant or another then you go out and get said coach. If he's a winner than you don't have to worry about his assistants because he'll pick people who he thinks will help him win once again. I want to have our owner live up to that Stanley Cup hype train when he 1st got here, drill another well Terry and get a proven winner here so you can have 2 franchises who adore you and are filling up the seats.

    You're a Bright one!

Defamation of a Winning Coach of 864 wins

One of the most Accomplished Coaches in Sabres History

Last Year, The Devils ultimately finished third in the NHL, and second in their division, with a 52–22–8 record. Ruff was again named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award. Ruff did this bringing NJ from the dredges for 3 years.

In 2014, Ruff led the Dallas Stars to their first playoff appearance since 2008. Another team he brought back from the dredges!!!!

In Ruff's second season as coach, the Sabres reached the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals before losing to the Dallas Stars in six games

That is the Coach I want to LEAD the Sabres from a 13 years missing from the Playoff streak

I'm curious but to the 3 bolded sentences, why?

What's so special about Ryan Johnson that makes him untradeable? Or Levi? Peterka's been very good this year and is progressing forward so his price would be high, but he's not indispensable either. I don't give up on D men at Power's age, but there's no question we do not know how to develop D men properly so for the right price........

and what's so special about the "top line"? Who is the "top line" anyway? Mitts Tuch and Greenway now? Tage is inconsistent, Skinner's a liability, and.....it's Okposo right now so idk who you were thinking as the other wing. It's hardly a "top line"

Dahlin can be a valuable player, no question, but he's not defensively good enough to build a team around. If that's your number one guy you'll have the same problem Ottawa and then San Jose and now Pittsburgh has with Karlsson. Lots of points, but gets you nowhere.

Really I just dont' see how ANYBODY on this team is "untradeable".

You don't know why Bold letters are used? I can't help you

If your willing to say you have no Loyalty to players you picked, you will get NO players to come to your Club!

GM talks to and makes promises to young players they will stand by them. That player then signs his Rookie contract if you lie, you will not get your draft picks to sign and remain in the minors or College till you lose your Rights.

Wow, if you don't know who the Top Line players really are, again, I can't help you.

My suggestion is to stop watching the Sabres, you seem to hate the Team!

Adams should inquire, particularly given their relationship, but it's pretty obvious to everyone that the likelihood of Brind'Amour coming to coach the Sabres next season is slim-to-none.  Carolina is not going to let him leave the facility.

Let's see, our GM's motto is to do the absolute minimum and take the least amount of risk with FAs.

    Thus I expect

    1) UPL/Levi to be the goalies next season

    2) Defense - with 5 guys under contract and a 6th (Joki) an RFA, I expect more of the same with one depth signing.

    3) Forwards - 8 are under contract - Skinner, Thompson, Tuch, Cozens, Quinn, JJP, Greenway and Benson.  Mitts and Krebs are RFA.  He'll re-sign Robinson and promote at least 1 of Savoie, Rosen, or Kulich.  Those 12 will be the forwards for 2024/25 with again one FA depth signing.

Don't you feel better already about next season?  Didn't think so!

The best thing Adams can do to Improve Home field advantage is a new

Different situation.  TM made his trades before the young core was in place and he traded away guys like Compter who would have been a core piece to do it.

I didn't say it was the same. But Murray traded everything away and got some good players, May have been the wrong coach but it didn't work out and we got CAP Strapped. Next GM sold everything and got some of the players we have now. Lot of the players who moved on have won Stanley Cups.

Brings us to Adams, he is NOT bending from the Draft and Develop. So Next year we are looking at heading to 14 years with No Playoffs. Nothing in Rochester that will change that Next Year! Maybe the 1st line gets back to 2022 production. That will help the 2nd line as Constructed if Healthy. Gonna sign Middlestat or bring up Krebs to Center 3rd line. 4th Line?

Lot of IFS there. All goes well maybe 2022 Projection happens but that isn't sustained growth to get to the CUP. There are players on this TEAM not tough enough for that.

Top Trades have to  happen and Adams is Foolish to think he doesn't need to do them. Signed Two guys to $7mil Contracts who aren't producing consistently or getting hurt. Good Assets with good contracts that someone should like.

Sabres need WINNERS now! not 2-3 years from now.

Every player should be on the table for trading there are no untouchable Buffalo Sabres players. As a Sabres fan I would be proud if the Sabres traded Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch for starters. And to really shock Sabres fans that players are going to be held accountable. I would trade both Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power for veteran players enough with the immature kids that have no accountability for their teams terrible performances night after night. I am not talking tanking. I am talking packages getting good quality NHL veteran players that are proven in the NHL in return. I don’t care about age. I want John Tavares from the Toronto Maple Leafs badly for starters and he is your new Sabres captain. I build the Sabres like the George Allen 1970’s Washington Redskins over the hill gang that went to the Super Bowl losing to the Miami Dolphins to win now. I don’t care about potential this Sabres organization needs to make the playoffs next year or there may not be any Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo in the future? This not making the playoffs yearly can’t go on. I trade with the Detroit Red Wings for Patrick Kane now but only if Kane agrees to a contract extension beyond this season. We need proven players that can get Buffalo fans to go to games again. I trade for a veteran goalie and much older smarter defenseman that have a clue not to turn the puck over. I want the Buffalo Sabres 30 years old plus no one younger than 25 years old. No more kids college and AHL development. The NHL is a man’s league not for teenagers that don’t have a clue what personal responsibility is all about when you sign a NHL contract. I would rather lose with Tavares and Kane atleast I know they have some personal professional pride. That is what I would do along with firing Don Granato and if Kevyn Adams doesn’t want to go along with the new direction of the Sabres organization fire him as well. I want a proven experienced NHL coach no more college and minor league coaches learning on the job in my opinion. Go Sabres! Let’s Go Buffalo

So you want to get OLD and maybe if you start winning have to redo your Roster old again, Draft and Sell

Seriously, read what you write out loud

Problem may be that the Amerks are not grooming up winning NHLer's

You don't sell Power's at 20 that you got 1st Overall for losing

If you sell Dahlin, it is to obtain one hell of a Package you can't refuse and give Dahlin a career before it is too late for him.

If you sell Tage, Skinner or Tuch, who will ever want to come here again.

    Because we keep losing,

The guys you sell to get better are Prospects and maybe players like Quinn, Samuelson, Cozens, Middlestat, UPL but you better get guys that do make you better, tougher! Guys that get hurt a lot need to move on for both sides, just not working here! Cozens or Middlestat has to go, both 2nd liners, both inconsistent.

Sabres need to make a TOP 6 trade and move someone on. Need to rebuild 4th line to be a TRUE checking line. 3rd Line should be grooming young players to be TOP 6.

Our defense is doing better. Replace Samuelson, Joki and get another Top 4 defense man. You have Dahlin, Power and Ryan Johnson now to grow. Good Veteran 26-28 would fit well that stays home.

My Young Untouchables are Power, Peterka, Ryan Johnson, Levi. They are NOT Tradable. Have to set your Franchise with someone.

1st Line players are Untouchable without a Package you can't say NO

Dahlin too is Untouchable for now unless a Package comes in you can't say NO. (worried about 6 years of losing though)

Everything else is an ASSET to STOP this 13 years of Losing and No Playoffs

We need to look at how Van has handled their business since the last trade deadline

Over the last year, Van’s GM - dumped Horvat, Tanner Pearson and 3 depth players and ended up with Lindholm, Hronek, Zadorov, Lafferty and DeSmith through 10 different important trades.  He also signed UFAs Ian Cole, Blueger and Carson Soucey.

Talk about an aggressively remaking his roster,

We don’t need this drastic of an overhaul, but KA could learn some lessons from a GM willing to do what is necessary to build a winner.

    Unfortunately, Adams will say

    Remember Murray

I'm confused what buffalo is doing to this kid if they keep bringing him back after 1 game.

I would let him stay the rest of the year in Rochester

Remember UPL fall from grace last year? Never proven he can win when necessary. Also Comrie hasn't proven he can stay Healthy.

Right move for now to get the most Reps for Levi and track what UPL does.

Don't hate UPL, he just has NEVER stood up yet for a whole year. Failed last year and use to get hurt a lot.

    The Stage is yours UPL!

  18. 3 hours ago, Mango said:

He should stay down for the remainder of the year.

I LOVE Levi. But he may never be the goalie we want if we don’t take some ownership of his progression.

Depending how that goes I might still be in favor of bringing in another goalie next year to pair with UPL and letting Levi continue to marinate with some spot duty next season.

This is more what UPL is doing then what Levi is not doing. Levi could just as easily be the main man after All-star break. UPL was great before All-star last year, after he sucked. Why Comrie 5-1-1 and Levi 5-2 got to play chase for the Playoffs.

Levi can't sit this long, he needs games. If Adams wanted Levi to be the main man he would have gotten a Veteran to work with him. Instead he created a 3 man Competition.

I still am not sold UPL is the man, we were here last year. Club is at .500. We have Regressed this year. See how this all goes.

Adams to me is the Failure at this Point. He has LEFT more questions then answers moving forward

  19. 4 minutes ago, Curt said:

This is all perfectly reasonable.  I don’t really disagree.

My points were were mostly just weighing in on whether the Sabres could afford to pay Mitts long term.  They can, but you could definitely be right that it’s not the ideal roster mix.

One other thing I’ll say regarding this is that the Sabres may view Cozens as someone who can do some of this shutdown C type role in the future.  I think he has the physicality and mindset to do it.  He definitely isn’t there yet though.  How much of that is a conscious game plan decision to play a transition offense game as opposed to a defense focused game, I’m not sure.

Bottom line goals mean more and Cozens is a 30 goal scorer. His physical size is a added bonus. None of this takes away who Middlestat is. problem is we have 20 mil/yr tied up on two defensivemen who also can get assists and goals.

  20. 6 minutes ago, French Collection said:

I would say Mitts is currently playing like the 2C. Cozens was even moved to TNT’s wing for a few games.

I would hope Mitts’ contract comes in around $5.5-6M, but he is playing well and could match or exceed Cozens’ stats. I love Cozens more but Mitts’ season could show him to be a core piece. He is also motivated by his next contract.

Even if he is 3C long term, he may be one of the top 6 forwards and probably deserves to get paid like one.

Anything that happens has nothing to do with Middlestat unless he starts scoring 30 goals. If he accepts a contract worth 3rd Center, keep him. Not surpassing Cozens. If someone gets hurt, great to have him. But he is on this team a 3C, not a winger either, that is his role and to go up to help with Injuries.
