Our philosophy is clearly draft and sign guys with big long names. They are either trying to force RJ into retirement or convince him to stay on with the opportunities for creativity, depending on how you want to look at it.

and who would blame poor RJ for giving up and retiring...I wanted so bad to win a cup (or even make the playoffs) for him before he retires.

  2. Yep let a great player that you drafted and developed who missed hardly any games and led the team in scoring basically walk away then overpay for some crappy vets no one else wants. That'll make a lot of sense (and probably exactly what we'll do). Oh yeah sorry I forgot our big signing of Drake  (who use to be on Degrassi High way back in the 90s). I hear that my cousin's husband's son Mike Bunting signed with the Leafs for two years. being from Scarborough that must be quite the thrill for him! he did well with Arizona and also with Team Canada.

  3. I often wish there was some kind of statistic to show just how good (or bad) prospects turn out to be in trades where one team gets a proven  NHL'er (like Jack who is without doubt a very good player). Call my cynical but I like the team getting the proven NHL'er much better. I have no faith in GMKA after the Sam trade to get anything of any real worth. As the old saying always went: the team that get s the best player wins the trade. We will be real lucky to get anything back even close to the numbers Jack has (and will continue to) put up...

    Someone should have offered one.

totally agree...find it hard to believe that was the best offer we could get for Sam. We have seen many "rental" players move at the trade deadline for much better then that. Clearly GMKA was in a big rush to move Sam regardless of return  and it shows. Next will be Jack and another package of completely under-whelming pieces...

Example of someone the Sabres should be in on. At the right price.

I agree...this kid is my cousin's husband's son! Played for Team Canada and did real well. Good size and speed. I'd love to see the Sabres give him a contract. Heck then I'd have a reason to actually try an watch them next year!

  6. so we are all trying to say that the team is finally getting it right? Maybe so but any team that is any good is strong down the middle and after we give away Jack we will be really weak and we have no prospects at center as we keep drafting wingers and d-men. I guess if we keep tanking sooner or later we'll get a star center that we can keep. You gotta have a star center I think but maybe I'm, wrong...

Yeah the rule starting next year, I think it's you can't have more than 2 number one overall picks in a draft over a 5 year span. See no more Edmonton/Buffalo "tanking".

So we got Dahlin then Power so we can't get 1st overall next year so we 're tanking for what?

  8. Once we give Jack away for a bag of hockey pucks as we did with Sam will we even meet the cap-floor threshold? Looking on the bright aside we should be able to lock up the  1st overall pick again next year fairly early. Isn't there new rules concerning how many times one team can have the 1st overall pick now? Thought I read that a new rule came in stopping teams from getting 1st overall pick too often in a 5 year stretch. Anybody hear of this rule?

“Congratulations Sabres fans, you lead the league in something: No team has more available cap space than you.”

And that's with Eichel still on the books....

Which begs the question once we give Jack away for a bag of hockey pucks as we did with Sam will we even meet the cap-floor threshold? We do?  I've read on here that the Sabres don't like Russians because Terry Pegula doesn't like Russians and he's really running the team no matter who the GM is.

They did draft a couple of Russians which is interesting. Either way I seriously hope we are not actually considering going after one or more of these over-priced FA's. Of course that would be typical of this team to let a guy who has performed very well for us since we tanked and drafted him 2nd overall leave for basically nothing (a pick that will be in the 20's and a goalie who may or may not become a NHL goalie) and not try to sign him long term but then overpay for some FA who will come here and be a bust (as most of the FA's usually are). At this point we might as well go all in and tank again next year. Apparently the Pegulas need the money now as they have over paid for a bunch of lousy ex-coaches & ex-GM's (and there are lots)... makes me sick to think we tanked to get Jack and Sam and we are now giving them away and acting like they are the problem. Why is it always the players who are the problem? Briere...Drury,,,ROR...Lehner...Sam...Jack...guess they are all not good NHLer's...

Still have KO and JS at 15 mill for the next two years, with Skinner 9 mill thru 2027.

Yeah but they are all pretty-much done. The team has to hit the floor cap wise so they have to have some salary and those will ensure they make that threshold (they will also help to lose no doubt). Once Jack is gone for whatever (I do not expect much after the Sam trade) that will lose a pile of cap so they have to have someone making enough to hit the cap floor.

  12. Have to agree this is a tank without letting on...you simply do not give away as player as good and as important to your team as Sam was and get nothing in return if you have any thought of winning. Hell they couldn't score enough last year with Sam so clearly they will be lucky to score much at all next year.  DG comes cheaper then those other guys like Boudreau and while he (DG) seemed to re-invigorate the team and help the young guys as stated earlier they went 3-7 at the end and had all kids of problems scoring. Really at this point they might as well tank as clearly they have no interest in paying guys to win now. Sam & Risto were clearly salary dumps and Jack will be next.

  13. Clearly those rumours about the Pegulas losing money and all were true as giving away Sam for basically nothing is clearly a salary dump. Even the Risto move was a salary dump but Philly just happened to make KA look good by giving a good return. It is lucky Philly gave that return or we may have got nothing for both players. Next we'll see Jack moved and again the return will be at best under-whelming. It would absolutely no sense to keep Jack now. Who knows maybe the team is for sale.  The Pegulas have deep pockets but obviously all their terrible moves with coaches and GMs has and is costing them a bundle and they are looking to cut cost. No different then when the team cut cost back when they let Briere and Drury go for nothing.

  14. So how are we going to make the cap when we trade Jack for some picks and maybe a few so-so prospects? What are we going to do try and sign free agents? That would make a lot of sense...trade really good players like Sam and Jack then try to sign a free agent...who the hell will want top play here now? Heck for that matter most of the players left here will not want to be here once we stat losing again which obviously we did in great abundance last year with Sam and now we lose his goals and leadership. Guess Casey will be our #1 center for years to com,e as we did not even draft a center.
