It's still confusing why your GM picked one Wide receiver in one of the deepest in a decade

It's being debated endlessly over on the football side of this forum. Beane comes out of Carolina. They did the same thing with Cam Newton. Baffling, really, but they just concentrate on DL and devalue WR.

I do think Joe Brady is designing an offense that will emphasize the run and TE more, so that may be part of it. It's still a deficient WR room, and I fear that Coleman needs to play the big slot to really be effective, because he doesn't get separation. And that is where Kincaid shines. Evidently, they are convinced Coleman can thrive as a boundary X.

He's most likely not going to make a impact year 1 which is disappointing for you guys but he will be solid imo.

Having Hollins as the number 1 can't happen though hopefully you guys have a trade lined up

Beane says no. I hope he's lying through his teeth and after 6/1 something happens.

Even without a trade, there is no world where Hollins is a number one. You might have multiple WR2 types if they envision Shakir, Samuel, and Coleman as getting the bulk of the targets, but I don't think Coleman is a high target receiver. I would have selected McConkey and traded up to get Mitchell or Burton, even if he is a headcase.

So ... Beane and his scouting team and coaches, really do know a lot more about football than the fans - including the alleged experts at TBD.

Just wait until the Sabres get good, which could be next year, more TBD'ers will flock to this site and enlighten us all how to play hockey too.  Bank on it.

I've been on TBD for over twenty years. Was one of the few who was enthused about Allen, pushed for Kincaid last year. The Coleman pick might work out, but there are legitimate reasons for questioning it. Not everyone is an ignorant yahoo who wonders about Beane's strategy. Coleman is young. He's an improvement over Davis, but most of his success has been out of the slot, not on the boundary. Beane said he wanted a more explosive WR room, but he drafts a different kind of player. That's fine, except Kincaid is probably our best weapon, and he plays the big slot.

Anyway, I don't weigh in too much on the Sabres. I can't follow hockey as well as I can football. I know college football well enough to have a semi-informed opinion on the players in the draft. My fear with Beane is that he is always following the Carolina model, the one that ran Cam Newton into the ground. He builds competent teams with depth, but they lack elite playmakers, which is why we seem to sputter in the post-season and lose in the divisional round.

My own purely speculative view is that they fully planned to go ahead with Granato for one more year until Ruff was fired by New Jersey. When that happened Terry and Kevyn got together and it was "new plan". The rest is spin, optics, marketing, and PR BS.

I also think Ruff will get a say in personnel and other moves going forward. This will be his last coaching job and he will be bumped into a senior advisory role when it ends. The only question obviously is will it end successfully or not.

I'm pretty much happy with all of that. If KA listens to Ruff on personnel, I give it a better than 50/50 to at least end in the playoffs.

Prepping the fanbase for trading out of the first round.  Dammit Beane, I took Friday off for this *****!

You're going to be disappointed anyway when you find out the draft starts on Thursday.

Come on SDS, a puke emoji for a banner?

The teams last 13 seasons? Ya, it's all subjective on the futures view, but a puke emoji for support of that with which we are familiar and had a decent run in the tenure they were here? Lol, not a fan of the choice, or not a fan of a fan who's so elated at the choice a puke emoji was worthy?

Ya, I'm riding it a bit. I found it funny given the teams journey since his exit is all.

Ignore it and be happy. At minimum, the Sabres have a competent, experienced coach who will hold the players accountable. Folks were crying for that all year, but now it wasn't a real coaching search, so the rest doesn't matter.

Can't agree. D would fold under this level of physicality. Our weaknesses are net front and defending when forechecked heavily. That's playoffs. We are not built for it.

So, last off-season, I was optimistic and believed KA would make more significant changes. You were pessimistic, and obviously proven correct. It's not very happy making, however, to simply have no plausible hope. I do believe there are sufficient talent and assets to make a leap forward. I still think competent, veteran coaching that will hold a young team accountable can make substantial differences. Surely, they can find a coach that will at least raise the PP to close to ordinary.

But no doubt, the mix is wrong. The question is does KA properly appreciate that, and how hard would it be to transform the roster so that getting to the playoffs isn't followed by rapid dismissal and embarrassment. I don't want to have endured 13 years of nothing only to see that happen.

    You're a Bright one!

Defamation of a Winning Coach of 864 wins

One of the most Accomplished Coaches in Sabres History

Last Year, The Devils ultimately finished third in the NHL, and second in their division, with a 52–22–8 record. Ruff was again named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award. Ruff did this bringing NJ from the dredges for 3 years.

In 2014, Ruff led the Dallas Stars to their first playoff appearance since 2008. Another team he brought back from the dredges!!!!

In Ruff's second season as coach, the Sabres reached the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals before losing to the Dallas Stars in six games

That is the Coach I want to LEAD the Sabres from a 13 years missing from the Playoff streak

You will likely be accused of nostalgia and Boomerism, I dunno, but you could do a lot worse. I love the guy. Maybe bring back Peca as an assistant.

Give me Berube. He is the coach this team needs right now.

If it is Lindy he better come with James Patrick to make it more palatable for me.

I expect some more grit and sandpaper added in the summer via trade and ufa. Some vet leaders.

Is they are drafting #11 please trade the pick for someone who can help now.

Berube makes a lot of sense. Any thoughts on Dean Evason?

I am mad an angry and pissed like Everyone  else. I think they just need a few gritty forwards to fill in the holes

Right now, I think they need that, plus a 2C probably, at least 3C that can win faceoffs and has a strong 2 way game, along with maybe a veteran D that isn't made of glass like Mule to absorb minutes and play a defensively responsible role, someone who isn't running on fumes and ready for the glue factory, and a veteran backup for UPL would be nice, so that Levi can properly mature into an NHL goalie. Aside from that, how about a gritty coach who holds the team accountable, instead of enabling softness and habitual slow starts?

First as a Buffalo Sabres fan I don’t fear relocation not when the Sabres already announced renovations. Plus relocate to where? Salt Lake City is a small market the Buffalo Sabres market goes into Southern Ontario. You’re not moving the Sabres to Salt Lake City. What about Houston? Are you going to move the Buffalo Sabres to Houston in a risky hockey market over Buffalo/Southern Ontario that loves hockey with millions of hockey fans? No the Toronto Maple Leafs you can’t get tickets and if you can there a fortune. The Buffalo Sabres is an outlet for Southern Ontario hockey fans to watch NHL games in person. The Sabres aren’t going anywhere and it’s time Terry Pegula gets off the brother can you spare a dime crap. The Sabres aren’t moving Terry Pegula needs to hire a competent head coach and cut the crap in my opinion. Go Sabres! Let’s Go Buffalo

Talk to my college football guy. He called McConkey a great #2 receiver and considering he lives under 5 miles away from where Ladd plays and has seen 100% of his snaps, I'm gonna trust him here. Also said he's not a Worthy fan. Thinks McConkey at 28 is probably a tiny reach but would take him there as he will be a hot commodity if available later. Also added the following "I'd also think about what Ladd would look like in KC. He's a receiver that would almost instantly work with Mahomes and Andy Reids offense. If not there, Todd Monken is in Baltimore."

I am one of those advocating for taking two WR early. I would take McConkey at #28, and then use a 2025 2nd to move up from #60 to grab Legette.

I don't suppose you post over on the football side of this forum? I'd like to copy paste your comment over there if you don't mind.

Just remember, receivers nowadays are a dime a dozen. Grab one in the 2nd, but get the big guys early. (Opinion)

The WR position is not a devalued position like RB. They get paid, because they are not a dime a dozen. There will be a run early second, and it will drop off in the mid-forties. And with the trade of Diggs, they really need 2 WRs. There are some excellent OTs in this draft. It's a terrible draft for edge. The DTs worth it at #28, should they be there, will backup Ed Oliver.

What you guys payed for Sammy Watkins.. but imo buffalo should do that for  Nabers he's basically  a diggs 2.0

I think the top 3 are out of reach. It would cost too much. I wouldn't trade that far up for Odunze. Nabers and MHJ, yes, but we can't afford it. I have Thomas and Mitchell next, and they will probably both be gone by #28. Mitchell is the only one you might get with a modest trade up. If they stay at #28, I would take Legette. Folks were talking as if he were a late second, because of one year of production and he's older. I think he goes early second at the latest. After that, I like McConkey. I don't think he's just a slot. He played 70% of his snaps on the outside with UGA. But I'd rather get the big X receiver.

I think they should go get a WR with their first pick, either in the first or early second if they trade back and try to recoup the day 2 pick they traded for Douglas.

    <snip snip>

this is a fizzer of a post. i agree with all of it, to the extent i have any basis to do so (no idea on who's who in terms of prospects).

we keep hearing that this is a WR wealthy draft. so take 2! they did something like that with rousseau and basham a while back. go, go, go!

that said, i do worry a bit about not having a leonard floyd comparable this season. but maybe that's supposed to be von with a proper recovery?

I'd be surprised if Miller comes back to much. I think he's probably done, but at least they got a restructure that is heavily incentive based. Edge is a problem. It's a very good draft at WR. OL, and CB are pretty strong, too. I think there's decent depth at DT, but not at the 1T, which is what you need to split time with Jones. Edge, though, I think is just plain bad. I'd rather take some late round flyers, than spend an early pick there.

    Just inserting this on Diggs:

I think Diggs is untradeable this year with the cap hit. I don't think Beane would do that. The compensation would have to be considerable, and then you definitely need to bring in two top talents at WR early. I'm skeptical that Diggs is still a true WR1, but he's at least a borderline WR1, high end WR2. The cryptic tweets thing gets old, though.

  16. Samuel is not a replacement for Davis. They still need a big X and I think it would be crazy to wait until the later rounds in a draft with a wealth of talent that is going to go by the mid 40s. I'd love to get Thomas, but it will be too expensive to move up and grab him. Mitchell is the fella I think you could get, either at #28 or a small trade up. Legette and Coleman are the fall back guys for me. Maybe you could trade back to the early second and be pretty confident of getting one of them.

And there isn't a pick at #28 I like on D. Both the Robinsons are second round grades, or should be. You're reaching. It's a terrible draft for edge players. Latu you should take, but he'll be long gone. The strategy should be to push your chips in on making the offense as good as possible with your once-in-a-lifetime generational QB. And this is probably Diggs last year here, so get the fella who will be ascending and ready to become WR1 eventually.

With some supplementation to the forward ranks in a meaningful way this offseason I think this trade could end up a Whopper of a great deal for us

It could, but do you trust KA to get the forward bit right? If he really thinks internal growth is going to be enough, it won't.

  18. 3 minutes ago, Hank said:

Well said. Draft and develop. People like the draft, but are irrationally impatient with the develop.

Let's see if they make some obvious moves to change assistant coaches. The PP should not be putrid, and it is. They're still very often sluggish in the first, and going down a goal to start games. I am skeptical on DG, and this is another second half where the Sabres win some games because they don't really matter. Folks talk about a country club atmosphere. I do think the players care, and want to win, but they are not mentally tough. I think coaching is part of that, and youth, of course.

I'm not sure they can make all LD for the most part on D work, but there's talent there.
They still need a number of veterans, more grit and toughness in the forward group. A top 6 RW, a 3C, someone who can reliably win faceoffs. I think a veteran backup for UPL, and not rushing Levi would be smart. Buying Skinner out might be even smarter. He's like the shipwreck survivor from the old Night Gallery series. Doesn't matter that he can score when he's on, he sinks the team.

KA has the assets to make it work. I don't think just running it back is the answer. If he thinks it is, with the same level of add as last off-season, no bueno. I'm also not convinced Terry P. isn't perpetually cheaping out on the Sabres.

Could be. So why is he waxing so poetic about it? People want to believe his emotion over KO was sincere, and I get that, I think it was, too. But then the better part of me thinks he’s unlikely to go off the rails dishonestly when he’s showing he’s pretty honest emotionally. So I don’t buy it’s purely a Terry thing with Girgs

i think it’s reasonable to conclude that part of the reason Terry and KA get along so well, part of the reason Terry trusts him so much and PICKED him, is BECAUSE they have some similar philosophies

Well, this is not really reassuring.

Basically it’s fairly comical that Adams put so much emphasis on Girgs being part of the “fabric” of the team. Because he’s been here for so long. As if that’s a fabric we should be interested in keeping together

I think he means "Terry really likes him."
