  1. Some thoughts and pics, as promised:

The atmosphere was awesome after the Sweden-Russia game. The Swedes gathered outside in massive crowds, chanting and jumping and clapping. It was like nothing you see in American sports, anywhere. The camaraderie was really cool to witness. We stood and people-watched for about half an hour (the Russians and their body language was interesting to watch too).

Inside the game, we sat near some Finns that came all the way from Finland. There were a lot of Finnish fans overall, and I got the impression that many of them did come all the way here just for the Cup. And it struck me how awesome this is for them. To see all their national players together on the same ice, live. You could really feel the passion in the building, to the point that I was actually hoping Finland would score one in the third once it was out of hand. Don't get me wrong, I wanted a shut out and the goal differential. But the reaction of the guy in front of me was priceless. The Finnish fans deserved something to celebrate. I have a tremendous amount of respect for their dedication, as well as their ability to handle their alcohol and remain incredibly friendly people.

Also sat near lots of Eichel fans. There were 2 Canadians between us, but we had 6 out of 8 there mainly to see Jack play :)

I don't need to tell you all how dominant NA was. They were so fast, so aggressive on the forecheck and backcheck. Some sloppy passes, but their speed made up for it. They hardly ever dumped and chased, as someone mentioned earlier. Finland tried to dump and chase, but the young guns were just too fast and Finland was generally unsuccessful at entering the zone, period. It felt like NA scored 8 goals, not 4, because there were so many close calls. The fact that Jack scored one was all I needed to have a good time. The rest of the game was just awesome, awesome icing on the cake.

I was filmed for a news coverage piece before the game, aired somewhere in Quebec. Yes, I now consider myself famous among the French-Canadian population. Unfortunately I don't know any French-Canadians, so I'm somewhat of an anonymous celebrity.

  2. Awesome game, tons of fun being there. I'll post some thoughts and pics tomorrow.

One thing that was cool: tons of Eichel/Sabres fans up here. My dad and I got lots of "Go Sabres" for our gear. Obviously it was a Matthews/McDavid lovefest as expexted, but there was lots of love to go around for Jack too.

  3. I do not ever want to see a game day thread for the Bills in here again.

If I want that, there are innumerable Bills forums, one of which is run by SDS.

This is a Sabres forum.  Period.

We have a Bills thread, and that's nice, but LEAVE IT THERE.

Sure, this is a Sabres forum, but I like the idea of a Bills GTD during the offseason. The guys around here are pretty levelheaded compared to the hot takes you'd probably find on some Bills forums. I don't mind it at all. And not for nothing, but 4 of the last 5 threads you've started haven't been about the Sabres  :P I kid, but I don't think this is something to leave over.

  4. I assume you're joking, so I won't get into why this is an incorrect assessment of my stance. :)

What time is the game on tonight?

    6:00 I believe.. So, soon!

Can't wait to see Johnny-McDavid-Eichel. Should be lots of fun. Pretournament hockey making me forget all about football. Who woulda thought?

  5. You guys are all so caught up with Eichel that no one noticed USA's upset of Canada!?

It was a fun game to be at. Incredible atmosphere. USA pride was obviously running high, and the underdog mentality only helped that I think. The game itself was pretty chippy too. Didn't feel at all like a pre-tournament game.

Canada just played sloppy, and the US got some lucky bounces. Quick stood on his head until leaving the game. Skaters bailed out US goalies twice by making miraculous saves, one from Kessler and one from McDonagh that was really clutch. Can't find a game recap video, but there are some individual highlights on the WCH website.

  6. Great timing on this thread! I'm living outside WNY for the first time this hockey season, so I was going to look into NHL.tv or center ice soon. Was leaning NHL.tv because I have an Xbox to stream through. I would like the ability to watch on my laptop or phone, but it's not a deal breaker. Just like the idea of mobility. Like if I'm at the brother-in-law's house or (sigh) at work late, I might be able to watch from my laptop.

Is NHL.tv pretty reliable and decent quality in anyone's experience here? The discover promo is sweet, didn't know about that yet. Thanks!

  7. I love setting off in a random direction and seeing where the hilly back roads spit me out.

My commute to work is only 3 miles, but there are up to 15 stop lights in that span depending how I go. Plus multiple pedestrian crosswalks since I'm so close to OSU. Two weekends from now will be my first time home since moving down. I just so happen to be buying my dad's car off him that weekend too. I'm gonna have some fun driving around before coming back, that's for sure!

  8. Fairport. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Gotcha.. I grew up in Churchville, out a little ways into the country. Living downtown in a huge city now, man does it make me miss the quiet sometimes. Oh, and I definitely miss the driving I knew growing up. Back roads, now there's something that belongs in the awesome thread!

  9. Where aboot?

I'm not sure I've met a tougher hombre than my 2 year old. Today I was dumping mulch at the base of some pine trees and i unknowingly disturbed an underground bees nest. My boy got stung 5 times, I think I did once but the adrenaline made me oblivious. I ripped off his shirt as I could see their interest in it. When I got him inside I started counting. He stopped crying before I found the last sting. What a tough little dude.

Whereabouts do you live in Rochester, Ink? Maybe I've read it before on here, but I don't recall.

Sucks about the stings, but neat that your son is a trooper. I think I know plenty of adults that would be been crying much longer!

  10. I enjoyed a kolsch flavored with orange and vanilla beans the other day. It's called the Creamsikolsch, which I got a kick out of.

It was something new. Big flavor for a very drinkable, summer beer. 4.9Abv, it went down easy. Glad I wasn't in the mood for an IPA and ordered it. Probably wouldn't have if it weren't for the name, either!

  11. Yes, this nasty summer heat does put a damper on bike trips.

Sure does! The other day I biked to work, just in 80 degrees, but the humidity was high. Just 3.5 miles was enough to work up quite the uncomfortable sweat that I didn't enjoy under the dress clothes I changed into.

Then it rained on the way home. The big beefy tires on the x caliber are awesome. But man do they kick up a ton of water!

All in all, wasn't the most successful first attempt at biking to work. But I'll do it a lot more in the fall when this heat and humidity breaks.

  12. Oh yeah.....well.....Syracuse ###### rocked Colgate! So there!

    ...I'm a little bit ashamed.

Ha, you know what, I really have no idea why I never went to a Cuse game growing up in Rochester. I guess just because they were pretty bad all this years, although that sure as hell never kept me from the Bills!

The best Cuse season I recall was a Doug Marrone-lead Pinstripe Bowl win. Enough said, I guess. But I still should have made it out to one. I only made it to one basketball game in the Dome even though I followed them much more.

Even without going, Cuse was big-time to me. They were New York state's OSU. Or what UB is trying to become/not trying to become/still really trying to become.

  13. As I've mentioned before, I recently moved to Columbus so my fiancée can pursue her PhD at OSU. Being the giant sports fan that I am, it's not hard to jump on the OSU bandwagon. Except it's not even a bandwagon, it's a way of life down here.

Today was the first game, and I got season tickets through her student account. Holy cow, what an atmosphere. Before this game, UB was the only college football game I had attended. The Shoe jumps right over UB and blows the Ralph right out of the water. 107,000+ in attendance today. And that's almost how many points they scored haha.. 77-10 over Bowling Green. BG has pretty much run the MAC these last few years while I've been at UB, so this was quite the statement that I'm in a whole new world now. They just dismantled them with ease despite losing 15 starters from last year. Nuts, man. B1G football is legit, and fans young and old lose their minds over it.

After today's game, the OSU student soon to be my wife started teasing me and telling me "you're welcome" for finally giving me a winning team to root for. (She's right) but I obviously responded with confidence, stating that BOTH the Bills and Sabres will make the playoffs this year. Now she's trying to get me to put something down on that statement...

    No idea where you're getting 20. ;)

I'll fill in a missing goal: Eat less ice cream!! That's the thing that stuck with me the most from the Eichel-Moulson BB&G episode.. Matt's epic stash of frozen treats!
