  1. IMO, Tage slides safely into third in our pipeline, bringing a power forward skill set we haven't seen in Rochester in some time. I'd put money on him starting the year with the big club. With 3 first rounders next year, our pitiful prospect pool will improve significantly and begin to blossom as our core peaks and we get major cap relief: the 2020-2021 season. Wish this happened 5 years ago but happy there's a clear three-year plan now.

    1. Dahlin

    2. Mittlestadt

    3. Thomson

    4. Nylander

    5. Asplund

    6. Guhle

    7. Davidsson

    8. Samuelsson

    9. Borgen

    10. Olafsson

  2. We had the league's worst bottom 6 (subjective), so yes, Berglund will make it better if strictly used as a 3W or in an ideal world a 4C (you know Phil will staple him to Eichel regardless of how much of a drag it is (speculation), he did the same thing with Jason for the odd goal every 4 games). Sobotka could but he's apparently fallen off the age cliff (speculation) so I'm not counting on it. Tage gives you Zemgus-offense (see his thread) (very subjective) and whatever defense you'd expect from a hockey prospect (subjective), and we traded someone whose whole package can be argued to be our best player to get this upgrade (subjective), when just beating Montreal's offer for Armia gets you a better bottom 6 upgrade than the combined (subjective), because he's actively good and actively drives play, and not just a warm body past their prime (subjective), with less as far as contract troubles go (4 years! 4!!)

This avenue is objectively suspect. I'm not saying it won't work out but giving a blind pass due to the authority Botts has wrt me (and I'm not saying that's what you're doing) stopped working for me after watching Ron Rolston roll through this organization.

Mostly a reader here, and I always appreciate your in-depth analysis and discussion Flagg, but in an effort to promote optimism, I just want to point out that your strong disapproval of this trade is grounded almost entirely in opinion.

My sense is you're being overcritical of Berglund/Sobotka (clear bottom 6 improvements) and undervaluing Tage as a prospect, who I'd now put number 3 in our pipeline behind Rasmus and Casey (ahead of Guhle and Alex). From what I've seen (admittedly limited but nearly all his international play), he's a big, smart power forward with a super quick and hard release - something we sorely lack in our paltry pipeline. He can possess the puck, is good around the net, and can drive play. The comparison to Zemgus is an odd one. Also, I do like the idea of a nucleus of young American forwards who can grow together at a time when US youth hockey is at its best.

Add another first and a second, and we can start to reconstruct an organization bereft of talent. It should have happened 5 years ago, but it didn't, and thats not on Bots watch.

    I'm positive on:

    • the amount of draft capital we've accumulated
    • watching another skilled American forward grow in the NHL next year
    • an improved bottom 6, including a big smart Swede who can cycle and finish
    • an overhaul of the locker room dynamic, with the reigns now handed over to our franchise player
  3. “He’s a solid player,” Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said of O’Regan. “He’s got good hockey sense, he’s got good compete for a small guy. He’s not afraid, he gets inside.

“That’s the biggest thing if you’re going to play at that stature. You’ve got to be a little fearless, and he’s got that. He’s an interesting prospect.”

O’Regan was called up from the AHL after Barclay Goodrow suffered an upper body injury last Thursday against Florida and was placed on injured reserve. At the time, O’Regan, last season’s AHL Rookie of the Year, led the Barracuda with 12 points in 12 games.

“The thing I’ve liked about him is he’s competed,” Pavelski said. “He’s been first on pucks, he’s been in the corners, he doesn’t shy away from anything.

O’Regan has been able to feel comfortable in a power play role right away thanks in part to the similarities between the system the Sharks run and the one employed by Barracuda coaches Roy Sommer and Ryan Mougenel.

  4. Jeremy White tweeted his guy says Watch The Flames could be Lehner or Kane

My guy says JB chasing a young positional player. Not sure if the Sabres can pry the guy away or not.

    The tweet

    More from White

Additional point... he says chatter. If he says it’s done I’ll of course let you know. He’s never wrong.

    Nothing imminent as of yet

Would love to get Dillon Dube from the Flames. All around stud who should compete for minutes next year.

  5. I can't tell if you're being dumb on purpose but I'm not in the mood.

The Sabres suck at home. Kick them out of their fancy locker room. Make them use the visitors room and give every visiting team the Sabres room. I mean, every team basically owns the Sabres at key bank center, might as well give them the home team locker room.

Guy who thinks changing locker rooms is a practical and effective motivator is calling someone else dumb?

  6. I'm just as happy not getting him for what cost would have been.

Same, although I have full trust in a prudent Botty not just making a splash for the sake of it. A lot of Botty's comments on D start with integration into Housley's system, which I'm sure is what really made Shatty a target.

Happy about saving the money, but if Botty/Houser wanted him bad, its tough not to be a little upset that they didn't get their guy.

  7. Great stats.

His 5 vs 5 was also way better than his overall stats indicated.

Oilers only bought out Pouliot to create room to sign McDavid.

They loved his leadership and locker room presence.  Another character move that will add stability to the locker room.

It's obvious that Bots believes in building a strong lockerroom that will help show the younger players how to be a true pro.  I think that's one thing the Sabres missed with TM.  Veterans really didn't have a solid presence, whether it was their lack of ability or because of Disco Dan's lack of communication.  Either way it seemed some of the younger players were on different pages and no one stepped in to straighten things out.

Have you read the bolded above somewhere? Please share.

Most of what I've read/seen of Benoit is frustrating inconsistency and even more frustrating, poorly timed penalties. Still, as I said, an upgrade over Foligno, especially in skill imo.

  8. Looking up Pouiliot, I was surprised that he seems to be on a different team every year...I wonder why he has not stuck, if it's some personality thing or is he just inconsistent...Seems like a solid 15-19 goal man...

One of the most undisciplined players in the league. Stupid penalties can quickly wear out one's welcome.

Plus flashes of high skill with inconsistency can also frustrate.

Still, an upgrade over Foligno, imo.
