  1. Owen is a plus skater and passer, who excels with his offensive zone instincts, particularly knowing when to jump the zone and support cycles/become 4th forward/etc. He is also extremely adept at zone exits, often generating quick transition with his passing from the backend. His massive wingspan should support his growth in the D zone, disrupting zone entries and taking away passing lanes.

Unfortunately, his mistakes jump from the screen because they are mostly a result of a 21 year old growing into a 6'6" body. The goofy turnovers appear more egregious and are thus more frustrating. Anyone who is upset that he doesn't throw his body around more will never like the player.

This is my hopeful read of a second year, barely 21 year old defenseman to counter what I see as a gross overreaction from a frustrated fan base. Defenseman take much longer to develop, particularly those who are 6'6".

Eric Comrie isn’t a solid backup and beyond this season is of no use for the Buffalo Sabres organization. I can’t wait until Buffalo Bandits season because the Buffalo Sabres relying on UPL and Eric Comrie the season over for playoffs this season unfortunately again a panic move by Don Granato. When you start listening to the fans your sitting next to them. UPL has shown no ability that he can carry a number one goalie load after three seasons. Nothing has changed with UPL but the year. A few good Buffalo Sabres games doesn’t make him capable. I believe UPL will fold under the added pressure like he always does. As for Eric Comrie he has no future and can’t seem to stay healthy. As for Devon Levi I think the last place I would send a goalie is the AHL Rochester Americans if anything Devon Levi should have stayed in college at Northeastern Huskies.

Again if I owned the Buffalo Sabres the Sabres farm team wouldn’t be in Rochester anymore. I don’t believe you can develop players in that poor outdated Rochester Americans AHL setup. Blue Cross Arena in Rochester is a dump. I have talked about it for years it’s one of the many reasons the Buffalo Sabres as a franchise is struggling. The Buffalo Sabres need a 5,000 to 6,000 seat arena built in Amherst for their Buffalo Sabres AHL farm team and other sports holdings like the Henderson Dollar Loan Center for the Vegas Golden Knights AHL farm team. That is today not our outdated 1970’s minor league setup.

The Buffalo Sabres need to make a $80 to $100 million dollar investment in their hockey development if they are serious. $80 to $100 million dollars is what is needed for a AHL minor league arena. I wouldn’t build in Rochester it’s too far away from Buffalo plus I don’t believe in that Rochester sports market anymore the Rochester Knighthawks attendance is terrible Terry Pegula is losing a lot of money with that team. I think the Buffalo Sabres would be more successful acquiring land in Amherst by UB to build a minor league arena for the Buffalo Sabres AHL team, UB Bulls basketball, indoor soccer and indoor football. Terry Pegula should sell his Rochester holdings Americans and Knighthawks to local Rochester investors or keep them and sell the Buffalo Sabres/Buffalo Bandits because it’s not working the way it is now. The Buffalo Sabres need major developmental money not just for renovations to Key Bank Center downtown but for a minor league arena in Amherst. The Vegas Golden Knights aren’t winning by luck they made major investments money in their Vegas AHL team facilities. Terry Pegula doesn’t look like he is the man that is going to do that for whatever reason so more Sabres losing and suffering as Darcy Regier said which is really unfortunate. I don’t believe in Rochester Americans or that substandard development set up for the Sabres prospects in my opinion. Go Sabres! Let’s Go Buffalo

Wow late entry for worst post of the year.

Don’t over think.  He was making a point.

In what world is a white-asian mixed race kid called brown (note: my child is half Japanese/half white)? In what world does being married to a Korean-American disqualify you from being racist against a completely different race?

It's a stupid comment that I'm happy has exposed the similar minded.

  4. I wonder if any of the prospect tracking models account for improvement over the draft year. I'm sure the Sabres models do but not so sure about the fan accounts. Everything I've read about Anton is how vastly he improved in 2023, which isn't shocking for a player who is 17. Either way, very excited to see his continued growth in the SHL and Worlds.

  5. A July birthday who got significantly better as the season went on, particularly his skating. He's an end to end highlight reel in a filled out 6'3'' frame. Easy to be cautious about big and physically mature skaters imposing their will on their age group, but it looks like he more than held his own in the SHL.

From Cam Robinson, scouting Malmo (SHL) (note: end of season in March, 2023):

This was my first look at Wahlberg this season, and I’ve gotta say, I was impressed. He was highly competitive out there. He battled for space, he battled for pucks, he was relentless on the forecheck. Clearly, this is a player with good size and good speed. He kept his game simple with the puck, but was considerate without it. He lurked around for open spaces, he connected on the timing to receive, move and give it back. He even tallied an empty-netter. Really strong performance from the 17-year-old.

From Jimmy Hamrin, scouting Malmo (SHL) (also March 2023):

This is the best game I have ever seen from Wahlberg. He was a forechecking beast! He played fast and physically. He won puck battles, drove break ups and connected on offence. He was awarded with an empty netter to secure a big win for his club. Last game, he got benched late for being a defensive risk. In this game he was used all the way and got to play to defend the lead when Brynäs pulled the goalie. He played on a line with veteran Carl Söderberg and they connected well. He filled in on open spots, had some good give-and-go situations. He backchecked relentlessly. He seeked the inside, got in front of the net. Wahlberg supported well but played more to instinct than with strategy.

Go Sabs. Like most, I want Moore for those who could potentially to fall to us. No way Benson does. I watched several of their games this year and he was the play driver, jumping off the screen far more than Savoie (unfortunately). I could see a wild card also, with Musty and maybe Barlow if they feel he can improve his transition game (if he can, I would be all for it). Don't love any of these defenceman at 13OA.

Never been happier to be so wrong.

  7. First time back to the board in a while. I was excited to see what folks had to say about the draft and all I see in reviewing threads from this month is Buffalonill being rude, cranky, and negative at a frantic and often repetitive pace. I'm all for everyone having a voice but when its so constant and consistently a drag, its tough to ignore and makes this place less enjoyable.

Yes one game defines these kids.

Ohgren looked awful so i guess Dallas blew this draft. Wallstedt has looked bad all tournament so Minnesota blew it on a bust. Edvinsson has had a lot of questionable giveaways. Detroit are screwed.

    Haha nobody is saying this.

Sorry to say all Sabres prospects less than impressive in today's 2 games.

That Bergmanis kid from Latvia was a dynamo though. Somebody needs to sign him.

Rosen was completely irrelevant, playing only 9 1/2 minutes in Sweden's biggest game of the tourney. He wasn't out there for PPs or with the 6 on 5 man advantage in the final two minutes. Something happened between the Austria game and last night.

Sweden as a whole has looked off the first two games and was overwhelmed in this one by the American forecheck. I'd say US won 80% of 50/50 pucks and absolutely hounded the Swedes. The Swedish response was uninspired, nervous play; clearly a team without a leader who were quick to point fingers or complain to the ref. It's a shame Rosen (or anyone on the team for that matter) didn't have the character to step up. I've been quick to defend Rosen and preach patience, but last night's performance leaves me the most discouraged I've been. Let's see how it goes tonight.

One note: Lekkerimaki is the only skater that popped, albeit on a single end to end rush.

I don't understand why people on here keep saying this. Kulich played against men last season. I believe putting hin in the Q against 16 & 17 year old boys is a dumb move.

People are saying this because Adam Mair implied this was their preferred landing spot for him in his post-camp interview. I agree with you and Freeman for the most part -- his game does seem ready for the A -- although there could be benefits to him dominating in his first year on a NA rink in the Q vs potentially losing confidence in a much stronger league than what he's used to.

  11. All accounts have Kulich as the star of camp, with Levi not far behind. I've heard pro ready and comparisons to JJ's meteoric rise post draft.

Soon after the draft, when asked where he plans to play next year, he boldly responded "in Buffalo". Maybe he's not so far off? It would be great to have him on this side of the pond for his D+1 (drafted 3rd in the Q import draft).

You aren't high on Olofsson, which is perfectly fine.  What do you expect he'll bring back in return should the Sabres offer him this year?  A 2nd?  Other?

They already have 3 2nd rounders in '23 and have added ~21 young players to the pipeline (not including Krebs & Levi) in the last 2 years (at least 8 of which have to be legit to be in the NHL prospects.  Does a 4th 2nd rounder appreciably bring any value in February/March?

(Apologies if the myriad questions seem to be attacking; that is not the intent.)

I long for the days we sign a deal that we think will be good value for US in the near future, rather than a deal that we see as good for ANOTHER team, in said near future.

The contract basically has built in “in case we are bad” insurance, but little “this could be good when WE are good” backing.

Agree with all of these sentiments! My original comment was basically trying to say the bolded above - a secondary potential benefit for signing a well-liked goal scorer could be his value at the deadline. Like you both, I hope we aren't sellers but good to have options both ways. And Taro, yes I'll happily take another second rounder!

Only problem w/ that is, THIS had better be the LAST year in a long while we are even considering the possibility of dumping guys at the deadline.  They are in all likelihood going to need him at next year's playoff push so he won't be deadline expendable then.  And IMHO he won't be expendable this deadline either.  So, they didn't really buy much, again IMHO, w/ the 1 year of his UFA years.

Yup, shouldn’t be selling off at the deadline should be pushing for the playoffs

I understand no longer wanting to be sellers at the deadline, but there is a strong likelihood we will be again this year. If not, great, we have a somewhat affordable contract for just another year. If we are, then Vic is probably are biggest realistic trade asset and this contract helps.

I'm also just not very high on Vic and think we have multiple players very close who will more than fill his role. But for vibes, continuity, and potential trade value, I'm good on the two years.

I agree that longer would have been better.  This reminds me a bit of Reinhart's bridge deal.  The difference is that the team was a train wreck at the end of Reinhart's deal and he was ready to move on.  If things continue to trend positive, the team will be in much better shape when this deal ends, which leaves a situation where either 1) Olofsson wants to stay, but there's not spot for him (a very good problem to have); or 2) he is re-signed at the time.

Form a practical standpoint, with so much foward talent in the pipeline, it may make sense to get 2 more prime years out of him at a relatively low rate, when we have cap space, and then move on if and when he's due big bucks.  Again, a good problem to have.  After 2 years, he's either 1) earned a big payday (with the Sabres or another team), meaning he played very well for the Sabres, or 2) didn't play well and the Sabres would want to move on anyway.

So, overall, a good move by Adams.

Agree with everything you said. I just want to emphasize the bigger difference is Olofsson is not close to Reinhart. But yeah, fine with this and the term sets him up to be moved at a deadline.

I'm interested in why they selected C 3 picks in a row...was it truly best player available on their board or did they specifically target the position?

Seems like Savoie was a no brainer pick, but why the other 2 on top of him?

I think Östlund is the only sure fire center of the bunch. I read Savoie played much better in the second half when he was frequently moved to wing. We'll see but I'd say it was clearly BPA.
