  1. 3 years ago I switched from Nationwide after many years with them.  I checked many insurance companies including Geico but ended up going with Liberty Mutual.  They're rates were competitive to Geico and I've been very happy with them.  From what I can remember Geico was cheaper for a simple, basic coverage policy but at the time I had 3 cars with one being driven by my daughter going to college and as I added more and more coverage options onto the policy eventually I was able to do better with Liberty Mutual.

    Just a thought.

  2. One other comment on needing a license ...

If your nephew is 9yo he doesn't need a license.  BUT, if YOU assist him in ANY WAY in fishing then YOU need a license.  Helping him could be attaching a lure or bait, helping him cast, removing the fish from the hook, etc.  It can be touchy.  And usually the DEC officers don't just come up to you.  They watch for a period of time so when they do approach you they already know if you were helping.

You want to play a sport?  Find some buddies, choose teams and play.  None of these organized leagues (town, travel, etc).  You want to play hockey?  Wait 'till winter and the pond freezes over (or play in the street with chunks of snow marking the goals)

Having a cop visit the house to talk to me for some reason or another and getting slapped upside the head by mom or dad even before they heard what happened.  A cop wants to talk to me about something - I MUST'VE been doing something wrong.  Also, substitute 'teacher' for cop.

Growing up on the shores of L. Ontario - want to go swimming?  Go behind so-n-so's house and jump in.  No pools. No need for parents.  Just do it.

returnable bottles - I know we have them now but back in the 60's how many kids would look for them to get the .02 or .03 back so they could load their pockets up with candy and gum?

  4. I bought a set of snow tires on wheels from an acquaintance who assured me that they were only a couple seasons old and in great shape. I figured $300 for a used set vs $1000 for new would be a fair tradeoff. The tread wear was good.

Evidently at least one is either out of round or on a bent wheel. I've had them re-balanced, I've rotated them, and yet I can't eliminate the road vibration.

Looks like I'll be spending that bribe from VW sooner than I planned and chalking a few hundred bucks up to the challenge of trying to be thrifty when broke. :wallbash:

Not sure what make car you own but I had an issue with my Subaru Outback last year.  Bought a NEW set of tires and had a vibration issue.  Tires rebalanced, rotated, taken off rims and remounted, nothing helped.

I happened to speak to a Subaru mechanic who suggested I get the tires FORCE balanced.  The system presses a bar on the tire while the balancing is done and the tire is spun.  It simulates the weight of the car on the tire while spinning down the road.  Subaru did it for about $100.  Smooth as cream after that.

Not sure if this is something unique to Subaru (my model year was known for shimmies/shakes in the steering wheel) but it might be something to talk to someone about.

  5. Without those errors he doesn't get up until the next inning with bases empty.  Even if he crushes it, the game is only tied.

That's assuming the Rangers should've been awarded the run when the ball caromed off the batter's hand/bat in the first place.

  6. Yea.. it's owned by a member of the Wegman's family.  White House liquor was in Brighton and was highly regarded before the Wegman's bought it and moved it.  The same happened with Century Liquor in Pittsford.  Century Liquor was in Greece and Wegman's moved it.

Danny Wegman cannot own a liquor store due to state law.  So, they have those stores owned by other members of the family and they just happen to all agree to use Shopper's Club and every other inventory system so they can obtain their operating efficiencies.  There are some articles floating around about the legitimacy of it all but that was their play when the state refused to allow wine sales in the grocery stores.

Frankly, I'm happy for it.  I love Century.  Great prices and knowledgeable staff.  I don't think the Palmeri's (Marketview) would hold the same opinion but hey.. they do okay too.

I was bummed when Century moved as it was only about 5 min from work and convenient to stop at on the way home.  Good prices too.  But living on the "far" west side I've got Mahan's which I think has Century beat in price (Marketview too) and since my company moved to the west side it's just as convenient.

  7. Well, it turns out it was just trying to load new version of Chrome and that was what screwed everything up.  It's flying again.

    good to hear

I use a couple of add-ons for both browsers that block all that crap, maybe that slows Firefox down. After running all three OS's I think 10 is faster than 8.1, but not by as much as 8.1 is faster than 7. I'm sure it's different for everybody depending on the comnbinations.

I was going to ask if you had a bunch of add-ons installed.  I try to stay away from them.  We're finding more and more here at work that they're interfering with programming we're doing and at home I really haven't found any that are so impressive I just have to install them.

  8. Ya, I do.

Location, with who, how many and what kind of birds (ducks, geese), how many the dog retrieved, am or pm, wind direction and strength, date, etc...

The retriever I have now is at 585 and I lost his first year of retrieves.....about 44. All water retrieves, none on land are counted, not even the grouse.

Like I say, anyone from the site comes out, 20% off. World-class walleye fishing and grouse hunting while waterfowl season is on too.

    Hey Ducky -

Do you get wood ducks in your neck of the woods?  If so what do you do with the flank feathers when you clean them?  While I don't hunt, I'm into fly fishing and could use the barred flank feathers when tying Catskill Style Dry Flies (as well as other patterns).  Didn't know if we could work something out as long as there's no legal issues with shipping feathers between countries.

  9. Where did you go to do this?

I'm doing this totally from memory as I'm in a training class and won't get back to my pc until who knows when but I think you go under start - settings - update and then look around there.  You can choose windows update on the left side of the screen and you'll have options listed on the right side.  I think there's a choice about automatically loading updates vs. allowing you to be notified that you need to restart your computer.  You might have to go under advanced if that shows somewhere.  FYI I'm running Windows 10 professional but I'd guess Home works the same way as I just updated my wife's laptop and it appeared the same.

sorry I can't be more specific but I seem to remember it's pretty evident once you get into the right setup window.

Is it just me or has Firefox gotten slow over the last few months. I have both Chrome and Firefox installed. As much as I hate anything Google related (yes I have an Android) it's been much faster for me that Firefox lately.

Funny I thought just the opposite.  When I first got pissed off at IE I started using Chrome but it seemed to get more bloated and slower as I used more and more google apps (play, gmail, calendar).  But Firefox just seems to move along consistently and rarely hangs up.  And I think Win10 is MUCH more responsive than Win7 was (can't speak for Win8 as I never used it).

  10. ....and..... I'm hosed.

Last night while I was surfing on Chrome, the computer rebooted (it's done that a few times since the upgrade).  When it came back, EVERYTHING is working much more slowly, especially Chrome.  I think maybe this afternoon if I can get internet connectivity to work I'll try to do a fresh install of Chrome.

Could your reboot be your setup for Windows Update?  I think 10 defaults to automatically installing updates and rebooting.  I've had new updates show up almost daily since I upgraded last week and each one required a reboot.  I went in and turned off the "automatic reboot feature.  I let 10 notify me that my pc needs a reboot and then I can choose if I want to do it immediately or not.  I've also noticed when I reboot my pc runs slower for a period of time - possibly Windows rebuilding cache and running all those friggin background processes.  10 has a fast-start feature which doesn't apply when rebooting and rebooting does seem to take longer than my old Win7 box.

Hopefully that's all it is.  FYI I got away from Chrome and use Firefox almost exclusively and have had no issues with it.

  11. If you want to do a clean WinX install, just do the upgrade then make a boot disk with a USB stick and install off of that. Kind of annoying to need to install twice, but it's the route I plan on going.

While I didn't do the clean install of Win10, you CAN d/l Win10 directly from MS and make a boot disk or usb stick from the d/l then do a clean install without having to provide any software keys.  Directions are all over google.  You can also create the usb boot stick from the "hidden" $Windows.~BT directory (or whatever they name it) which has already been loaded onto your pc's c:\ drive.  Again google for the info.

  12. Look up, I found the DEC info for where I'm fishing. Looks like Brown Trout.

So let's talk about bait. What should I think about using and what should I avoid like the plague?

And what's good eatin' for brown trout size wise?

If you are going to fish Oatka I would suggest you check the regs closely.  Depending on the stretch of water you fish you could be in a catch-n-release section as well as a section that doesn't allow bait.  There are also size limitations if keeping fish.  It's one of the reasons catch and release is so popular - a lot less hassle than trying to remember whether you can legally keep a fish and it helps preserve the resource too.  FWIW some of the Oatka is considered "blue ribbon" water and some of the best trout fishing in NYS.  I don't fish all that often but when I do I primarily fly fish and the Oatka is one of my go-to streams.

  13. Reading the complaints about driving in the left lane makes me want to ##### about the POS who ran my wife and I off the road this morning doing 70mph on the expressway going into work.  I was in the left lane having just moved over there because cars were merging from an on ramp when POS decides the truck in front of him wasn't speeding up fast enough and he basically zooms from the merge lane all the way across to the left lane.  Unfortunately I was already occupying the left lane.

I ended up straddling the edge of the apron with my left wheels in the grass and the right wheels going over the rumble strip.  Luckily I was on the brakes and he shot past me with inches to spare and no collision.

  14. Last week after the home inspection my toilet started ghost flushing.  I've replaced the flapper before and that's no big deal, but the toilet is 20 yrs old and the fill tube was getting brittle, so I figured it'd be smarter to just replace everything since they have kits for only $20.  Did that on Sunday, and it was a little time-consuming but got everything re-assembled and congratulated myself on a job well done.  Later noticed a slight leak around the bolts, so I took it apart again and re-tightened everything more (the directions make you paranoid about over-tightening and I'd not done it enough).  Put it back together, problem fixed.  Except no, now there's a slow constant leak around the flush valve gasket.  Ugh. Took it all apart again last night, tried to tighten the lock nut just a little bit more (which is difficult with channel pliers because they don't open quite wide enough to get a firm grip), put it back together, tighten the bolts just a little more, and hope for the best.  Nope... STILL have a slow leak around the gasket at the base of the tank.  I have no idea if this "universal" kit just doesn't work with my toilet or I just can't tighten that GD lock nut enough with channel pliers, but dammit I'm tired of messing around with this stupid effing toilet when I have a million other things to do to finish getting my house ready for listing next week!!  Why, oh why didn't I just replace the flapper instead of fixing something that wasn't broken?   :(  I don't even know what brand of toilet it is to look for a specific replacement since the only markings are "Made in Chile" and none of the stamped numbers match any model on plumbing supply websites.  ARGH.

Just to clarify are you saying the leak is OUTSIDE where the tank/bowl join or is it leaking INSIDE around the flapper and running into the toilet itself?

If it's outside where the tank and bowl meet one thing you might want to try is to tighten up the bolts/wing nuts/whatever evenly.  I had this problem a year or so ago and what I found out was that one side was tighter than the other so the gasket wasn't compressing equally.

If it's inside and the flapper isn't sealing the flange at the bottom of the tank there are replacement flappers that are much better than the ones that come in the kits.  You want to get one where the rubber/plastic is VERY soft so that the water pressure presses down hard enough on the flapper to make a seal.  You can also clean the flange with some fine sandpaper or steel wool to clean off any imperfections that might be causing the flapper not to seal.

Eventually I had to replace the whole dang toilet but these tricks got a few more months out of it.

  15. ok another noob poster here -

Actually I've been a member for a few years but mostly lurk.  I visit almost every day and depending on what's going on at work maybe multiple times a day.

I find this place to be filled with some incredibly knowledgeable posters and I enjoy reading many of the threads and gleaning what I can from them.  As others have said I think my lack of posting stems from not being as knowledgeable of the Sabres especially their history.  I guess I'm late to the table when it comes to the Sabres.  I really only started following them seriously over the past 4-5 years.  I didn't grow up in a sports-minded family and what sports I did watch was primarily football and some baseball.  Living outside Rochester I don't even know how much access there was to the Sabres on TV back years ago; I'm in my 50's.

I think one of my first posts had something to do with "Tyler Meyers" and I promptly got a reply complete with the  :wallbash: or  to point out the error of my ways.

Other than that I've never really had any issues here.  I haven't always agreed with everything said or how some issues were handled but that's just my opinion FWIW and not something I'd ever get into an argument over.

As someone else said I think the whole "Tank vs NoTank" stream of threads over the past 2 years really hurt overall.  So many good discussions were derailed.  I'm so glad those days are over.

I guess I'm just a Sabre fan wondering what GMTM will do with our 2nd 1st round pick and what might happen in FA.  How will the team look next season, what will DDB (is that the official monker?) do with the team and how next season plays out.  While I don't feel like I can post a lot about it I certainly enjoy reading about it here and will continue to do so.

  16. I'm regretting giving up alcohol for Lent.  I haven't looked forward to Easter this much since I was a kid.  Imagine going through the last couple of months sober.  It ain't pretty.

I take it you aren't aware that lent ended on Holy Thursday?

  17. BTW, I don't understand why Ted Nolan has not embraced the tank. It's just not the smart thing to do at this point. What good will it do to win a few games down the stretch? It certainly won't save his job. It only hurts the team in the future by screwing up a top 2 draft choice this year. I don't get the logic here. It makes no sense to win any more games. Why is GM Murray doing everything to focus on the future and then let his coach follow a different path?

Why do you think Nolan hasn't embraced the tank?  What else can he do to make the team worse than what they already are?  At some point you have to let all this just play out and the chips fall where they may.  You've got a bunch of players who have pride playing for their jobs; maybe not jobs in Buffalo but jobs in the NHL.  Next year we get numerous players back off injury PLUS a potential influx of draft picks.  Where do some of the current marginal players go?  AHL or out the door?  Who's going to pick them up if they're seen dogging it on the ice over these few weeks.  These guys are trying to make a name for themselves.  And if I was a guy on the team being asked to dog it so Buffalo can finish DFL and draft my replacement I'd be a little ticked and would like nothing else but to toss a monkey wrench into things.

Sure I'd love to see them finish last and win the sweepstakes but I also liked hearing the NBC guys last night praising Buffalo for their "hard work" and hustle and how they gave it their all.  Maybe they were blowing smoke but it was nice to hear that recognition nonetheless.

  18. There's also one on E. Ridge Rd in Irondequoit. However if you want to go to the ORIGINAL, head up towards the lake. Corner of Edgemere and Island Cottage Rd. Grew up in that area. It's been in business for as long as I can remember. Used to be a big "war" with Schallers and the Char Broil which is across the street. If you were a fan of one, you wouldn't venture into the other. Char Broil has turned into more of a family restaurant while Schallers has stayed pretty much traditionally to it's roots.
