  1. My son-in-law went with MSG+ for this year and he hadn't complained about the quality so I asked him and he pretty much said the same thing other's have said here but maybe not to the level that others have experienced.  Also, he's got Greenlight, not Spectrum internet so possibly that helps some?

I'm in the same boat as Radar, $161/month includes Spectrum Internet 500mbps down, 25mbps up.  I also have free access to ESPN+ as my kids have a Disney subscription that includes it so I have all the Sabre games covered.  Yes, I do have to contact Spectrum every year to "beg" for another "deal" for the following year but so far I've been successful.

I didn't think they were ever free.  I suppose I could go convert my TVs to Roku.. or at least one of them.  That said, I've heard nasty things about Spectrum streaming quality.

Welcome to the programming fee wars!  These are always done to coincide with the start of something important (college football) and all done to put the pressure on the carriers to accept higher carriage fees.  This all comes down to you, the consumer, paying more for television.

A minor point though is that no one is blacking anyone out.  The carriage agreement expired and so Spectrum is no longer licensed to carry the channels.

I did think the 1st box was free but I dropped the boxes and went with streaming on our 2 tv's with Roku so possibly they changed their fee structure.  As for streaming quality - for me it's hit/miss.  Over the past few months I've had technicians out to the house numerous times.  I've been getting pixelation primarily on commercials - the worst being the Spectrum ads go figure.  I also have times where the video and audio get out of sync for a couple seconds.  Recently it's gotten better but I've done so much to my system I can't say what the issue is/was.  I got rid of the Spectrum wireless router (this saves me $5.00/mo) and put in a mesh system in the house, I've totally refreshed my tv back to factory defaults and then reprogrammed it, I've had technicians run all new wiring through the house up to my modem and router, they supposedly had the line crews out and they tested the tap at the pole.  And now just recently I was notified Spectrum is supposed to be "upgrading" their network to improve speed and stability and that perhaps my issues have been due to this upgrade.  Who knows.

I use Roku just to save the box charges from Spectrum for our four tv's. My cable plus internet is presently at $151/monthly. Expect that to go up about $40/month soon. When I consider the cost of internet plus streaming apps to get all we desire to watch I don't think I would save by cancelling the cable. Maybe I'm not up on this streaming. I'm a Mets fan (frustrating), Sabres fan. To get those games it's hard to find package that meets my needs for less than I pay now.

I was in the same boat.  My bill was just under $160 for cable and internet (500mbps) and was due to go up in September.  I called cust service and asked for their Retention Dept and was able to extend my current plan out another year with a $2.00 increase/mo. so I was happy with that.

And yes, ESPN and others are currently blacked out on Spectrum so no Cornhole Championships!!

A quick run through in my head.. a Spectrum intro plan would be my best plan to get ALL the games.  That would be $59.99 for MSG/TNT/ESPN (12 mos. intro) + $20 local broadcast surcharge (ABC) + whatever ESPN+ costs (I have Disney + Bundle so I pay $16.99.  That puts me at $96.99 plus whatever other hidden fees Spectrum wants to lump in.  Oh.. and their app is not on FIrestick, so I have to hope my TV can get the Spectrum app or I have to shell out for  cable box.

I think the 1st Spectrum box is free if you go that route unless you want the dvr package.  You can also get a Roku for $35-40 and the Spectrum App streams on that.

  4. Mostly lurker here ...

I don't know the rules that well but can an individual be both a rostered player AND assistant coach on a team?  If agreeable to both sides, couldn't Okposo be a part-time player on the team as well as an assistant coach?  Give him enough games to get to his 1000 game milestone (16? 18?) and let him play periodically or in the event of an injury.  When not playing he can continue to mentor and be that veteran presence that's always talked about.

  5. Last fall I contacted Spectrum to complain about the high prices.  My monthly bill had just increased to $230 including Internet and TV.  I had 1 cable box and 1 cable/dvr box.  Channels were just the "regular" channels + 1 tier up (not sure of what they called it) but no premium channels.  Yes I did have MSG so at least that wasn't an issue.  I live within the Buffalo market so my access to streaming apps for Sabres games is limited.

When I called I eventually was connected to their "Customer Care" dept. (I think that's what it's called) and asked them what I could to to help reduce some of the costs.  Eventually I was put into a package where I got rid of the cable and dvr boxes and went to streaming using a Roku (which I had).  I was also given an upgrade to my Spectrum Internet speed to 500mbps down, 25mbps up as well as eDVR.  All this for $142/mo which I thought was a decent price being that it included Internet.  The price has since gone up to $151/mo but that's still an $80/mo savings.  In fact I was so happy I canceled my Verizon account and switched over to Spectrum Mobile which saved me another $30/mo including 2 new Galaxy S22 phones.

Is this a good deal?  No idea but I'm saving over $100/mo from last fall so I'm not complaining.  Just thought I'd share.  YMMV

  6. I purchased the Playoff subscription for $30 from TheAHL so I could watch the Amerks but I gotta say Sunday's broadcast left a lot to be desired.  What's with showing goal replays DURING LIVE GAME ACTION??!!??  You can't wait for a whistle to do that?  Sound was all over the place at the beginning of the game, sound was muted at times when the period started or when coming back from a commercial and as it came on you could hear the announcers talking thereby missing whatever they said.  At one point in the 2nd period during live play all of a sudden someone must've hit the wrong button in the control booth and they started playing highlights of previous games.

So question to those who subscribe regularly - is this how the feed is produced and broadcast normally?

  7. I'd rather this team improve it's MENTAL toughness.  How many times did we see boneheaded plays at every position last year.  Not knowing what your responsibility is on the ice, not communicating, basically skating out there totally clueless.  Playing like world beaters one period and then playing like total crap the next.  To me this has very little to do with physical toughness.

These guys are professional hockey players.  We complain about how bad a guy plays when he's in Buffalo but then we see him traded and he "improves" overnight?  Obviously if he can do that with another team he's got it in him to do it here but for whatever reason we can't get that out of him.  If Ralphie can get these guys to play with their head in the game, stick to the game plan and do what's necessary on every shift I think you'll see a much better team just due to them playing the game properly.  And the improvements made to the team will only add to that.  And that ultimately should cause the team to be perceived as "tougher" i.e. tougher to play against, tougher to keep up with, tougher to beat.

  8. I don't post much but this one was pretty funny so what the heck ...

A few years ago I went with some friends to a Bills game.  Can't remember who they played (GB maybe?) as I'm not a big Bills fan but anyways we were in the heated seats at the one end of the stadium.  Behind us is a group of guys/gals all in their 20's.  Everyone having a good time, no problems at all.

As I'm sitting watching the game all of a sudden I have a young female sitting on my head.  She had lost her balance and literally sat on top of my head.  She then proceeded to slide further until she ended in my lap on her back, legs spread, knees over my shoulders and her crotch basically staring me in the face!  She's all embarrassed but laughing, I'm laughing, her friends are laughing, my buddies are laughing.  All I could picture was the scene in Animal House where the girl flies into the kid's room and lands on her bed and he looks up and says "Thank you God!!"

The funniest thing was getting her lifted up and off of me without shoving her crotch into my face any more.

If I smoked I'd have had a cigarette afterwards.

Went to get a beer during the 1st intermission up in the 300's.  At a stand that was only serving canned beer, starting at 10th in line it took over 9 minutes to get served.  The line was at least 20 people deep by the time I was heading back to my seat.  ALL the food lines near the escalator by then were stretching all the way back to the concourse.  There were a lot of people that couldn't get served during the intermission.

The concessions are always slow for the opener but this year did seem worse than normal.  Interesting to read that there were problems on the 100 level & the suites as well.

And, yes, a 24 oz beer that cost $11 last year was $12.75 this season.

Perhaps the issue was due to their computer point-of-sale system.  Maybe they installed new software, upgraded or were having server issues.  If 1 or 2 concession stands were backed up that could be a personnel issue but if numerous stands were slow it could be a system-wide thing.  Might also answer why in-seat ordering was taking forever also.

As to the quality, I can't speak to that.  If I go to the arena I never buy anything other than MAYBE a coffee.  I won't pay the ridiculous prices.  I'll stop on the way home to calm my nerves after dealing with the traffic exiting the area AND the crazies on 190 and 90 - oops THE 190.

I don't use this but i've heard that DTV Now only gives you MSG but not the regional MSG, so you'll get the MSG with all NYC content on it. It's what i heard from a friend who did this. Apparently most of the online streaming services who offer MSG only offer the NYC version and not the regional, except for Fubo tv.

Interesting i guess i thought msg would include the sabres stuff. I think they offer a free trial so its something that could be tested before you commit.

If they now have the local Roc stations i may have to try them out once hockey starts.

  11. I've been considering DirecTV Now which is their streaming version of DirecTV.  Not as many channels but much cheaper.  According to their site they offer MSG as part of their package.  They also have a cloud-based DVR if that's of interest.

The last time I checked they didn't have local channels (I live in the Roc area too) but perhaps this would be an option and perhaps you could get rid of one of your other services.  They're service can be picked up via Roku as far as I know.

  12. I don't use Roku with the Spectrum app all that much (I was looking into cutting the cord with Spectrum too so I bought a Roku but then got lazy and haven't pursued further) but what worked for me is to set the channels you want to access quicker as favorites and then you can simply go into the favorites list in the app and scroll to the channel you want.

I think those other buttons may be used if you try to play games

  13. 1. Housley's got Jack playing into the system.  It's not the free-wheeling style he played in college, it's not the freelancing DDB let him get away with.  No, he's learning to be in position for his teammates.  We know he has the speed but we see him coasting a lot.  I think he's got instructions from Housley on how he wants Jack to play, where he wants Jack to be, and Jack is buying into it.  Don't worry about the goals, but trust the system.  Okay sez Jack.  And he buys in.  It's frustrating; it's making him play a lot more disciplined than he's ever had to endure, and at times the frustration erupts.  But he's trying to follow the system for the good of the team.

Excellent comment.  I don't post very much here but this is what I was thinking about while watching last night.  Sure Jack could be slacking now that he's got his $$$, maybe he's got a minor injury no one is talking about or perhaps a touch of the flu.  He definitely didn't look like his normal self.  but I was thinking that perhaps Housley (and maybe even JBott) has told him to tone it back.  Jack certainly doesn't need to be 'evaluated' like others on the team and possibly the coaches don't want him out there taking over games - at least not now.  It could also be the reason they ended up signing him rather than letting him go through the season trying to "prove his worth" which would've caused Jack to be much more selfish a player to pad his stats - perhaps at the expense of the team.
