According to the hockey database website, both Mogilny and LaFontaine played in 7 playoff games that year. It looks like they both were knocked out of game 3.
Yep, thats right. Can't believe that I forgot I was at Game 4 at the Aud. Mogilny got hurt at the Aud and had to be game 3.
-
PA, wasn't Mogilny's leg broken in Game 1 as well?

Ryan Miller blanks the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 to take a 3 games to 2 lead in their first round series at HSBC Arena. Tim Connolly scores a highlight reel power play goal in the first that proves to be the winner and Fushetti gets his pepsi knocked over by a fan going to get beer.

It's pivotal Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals between the Sabres and Flyers at HSBC Arena, with the Sabres leading the series 2-1. In overtime, Curtis Brown swoops in front of the Flyer net and throws it top shelf on Roman Cechmanek. Brown gallops down the ice with some help from jockey Jay McKee's whip to the backside and photo-finishes past Dominik Hasek, who is spinning on the ice along the Buffalo blue line. Out of nowhere comes one of the most joyous moments in Sabres' history.
One of the greatest moments ever at a playoff hockey game for me. I've seen a few game winners in OT in the playoffs...but that was was really good. I can still see him come out from behind the net and shoot it in. Hasek doing that snowangel or whatever was fantastic.

April 9, 1988: John Tucker explodes for four goals, including one on a penalty shot, as the Sabres get back in their opening-round series with the Boston Bruins with a 6-2 win at the Aud. The Sabres now trail the B's two games to one.
"now Tucker, here he comes, in on Moooooog with the breakaway. Tucker going in SHOOTS HE SCOOOORES! JOHN TUCKER! AND THE SABRES TAKE A 4-2 LEAD! TUCKER WITH THE HAT TRICK!"
My favorite Ted Darling call.
Anyone have this game on VHS?

The Flyers wrest home ice advantage from the Sabres with a 2-1 win at HSBC Arena on the final day of the regular season. Former Sabre Derek Plante scores 57 seconds into the third period to break a scoreless tie, and after Donald Audette ties the game, Ruslan Fedotenko beats Dominik Hasek with seven minutes to go with a long-range shot. It is a day of offensive frustration for the Sabres, who see 30-year-old rookie goalie Roman Cechmanek make 36 saves and Doug Gilmour miss on a pair of clean-cut breakaways. Dave Andreychuk and Max Afinogenov are healthy scratches in favor of -- Rob Ray and Eric Boulton. The Sabres officially clinch the Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed in the league, but they come up short in their quest for a 100-point season, finishing with 98. For the fifth time in seven years, the Flyers await in the playoffs.
Never felt so bad after a regular season loss as I did this one. Basically playing for home ice against the very team youre facing in the playoffs. Roman Cechmanek was superhuman against Buffalo that year. My feeling was if we lost home ice it was bye bye for us. Well, we all know what happened. SABRES IN 6!

Why did we ever let Steve go? And where the hell did he go? Is he still around?
He went to LA. had a mediocre season and was out of hockey in 2 years. Plus, thats when the Sabres traded Dom and started their freefall. That was an exciting season though reacquiring Audette and getting Heinze.

Gare and Mogilny for sure, right off of season-opening faceoffs at home, in fact. Not sure about Ray. The media guide says he scored on his first shot.
Yep first shot. Not sure on the first shift. I think he also had an assist that night giving him a 2 point night.. the best game of his career. I can still hear Darling calling him "Robert Ray"

A win tonite puts us just 2 points behind Ottawa for first in the division. My prediction is that the Sabres will come out fired up because they know for sure now that they're all here for the stretch run and no one who actually plays got shipped out. Although I am curious to see the line of Drury-Kotalik-2nd round pick, what a dangerous trio
Amen. I'm hoping for an all out spanking of Tampa Bay since there is no pressure or jitters about being traded.

Ahhh Memories. I was listening to that game on radio and delivering pizzas that day. That game was at MCI Center and I do believe that Ollie the Goalie was in goal.

Brass Bonanza was horrendous

Craig Muni was a good, tough defenseman. I just wish we could grab a guy like that at the deadline. What we got for him really didn't pan out.
Eh, Muni was at the tail end of his career. Grosek and Shannon were integral parts of the next few years for Buffalo. Grosek was a machine in the playoff run of 1997-98. Shannon was decent in his years there.

Alexei Zhitnik scores on his first shot in his first game as a Sabre in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers at the Aud.
This goal spurned the famous call of "HOLY ZHITNIK" by our good friend and constipated cow John Gurtler.
Shortly after that Charlie Huddy scored and he laid this nugget on us "HOWDY DOODY HUDDY" God, he was horrible.

All my money is on Dom retiring back to the Czech republic cuz his brats need to learn the ways of the Czech people. Theyre becoming too North American for his liking.

Interesting observation. It's easy to give Golisano a lot of credit for the team's success, but what has he done that Hamister's group wouldn't have done? IMHO it's way too early to say what kind of owner Golisano is going to be.
PA, Golisano transformed an organization with just bad overall culture and has made it a winner. I dunno when the last trip up to a game from Bradford was, but going to a game this year and even in 03-04 as opposed to the games in the late 90's early 2000's have a different feel. Its almost as the Sabres are embracing their fans and making the team more accessible. Example number 1 is the Sabres website. Its far and away better than the crap churned out there in previous regimes. Variable ticket prices is another example. Overall, my point is, PR for the Sabres has been vastly improved.

I was at that game against the Oilers....then the Bills got whipped 52-17
-
I don't remember that game at all, the sabres that is.
However, the next few years on Super Bowl Sunday the Sabres hosted Winnipeg and Edmonton in matinee games and then the Bills promptly lost to the Redskins and Cowboys respectively. I attended both of those games. I remember them playing the Shout! song and stenciling GO BILLS in Bills font inside the blue lines.
-
PA, how can you forget a little tidbit of history on Jan 27, 1991?
Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood misses 47 yard field goal to win Super Bowl XXV. The missed kick gives the NY Giants a 20-19 victory and serves as a harbinger of things to come for the Bills in the Super Bowl. Fans across WNY run to local watering holes to drink the pain away.

Were three of the games in that playoff series ended in overtime? I remember in the following series against MTL that every game was 4-3.
Sweeney, Khymylev, and May. I loved Jeanneret screaming "DAAAAAALE HAWERCHUK. DAAAAALE HAWERCHUK!!" when it was Khymylev who actually scored.

That Primeau goal was practically fired from the goalline. I went apeshit after that one...
