  1. Thank goodness you don't make the moves in Buffalo. I think you need to give Hodgson a fair shake and not judge him on one month of hockey. Maybe Schenn would be a good player in Buffalo as he was a teammate of Myers in Kelowna. But maybe Hodgson is a decent top 6 forward that this team needs. We scored very little this year.

I am not ready to give up on Hodgson yet. But I would take Schenn too but not for Hodgson.

The Canucks would've been better off taking Schenn for Hodgson rather than the trade they made.

Don't be silly, that would require Deluca having a reasonable, fair, thought out opinion as opposed to hating everything.

  2. He's essentially turned into the nucks version of Andrew Peters without the fighting.

He'll be fine but they have no use for him during the playoffs. He's not ready yet. He should be in the AHL.

They want him for hitting and strength, remember their going for the cup this year and nothing less.

  3. I know Hodgson is young, but he is completely lost out there. Falling under the category of "just kick me in the nuts", Emrick and analyst(Olczyk?) were talking in the first period of how Hodgson may be better suited for the wing. The long awaited help at the cetner position? Better suited on the wing?

    ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

I don't buy that for one minute. His struggling and getting far too frustrated but if he takes it slow and has a little fun all will work out. His still a rookie and the change from Vancouver to Buffalo has to be a big one. Styles, offensive prowess, etc.

  4. Do you attribute players suddenly reaching a new professional level who then strangely stop acting in ways they used to in the lower ranks, do you attribute that to them just forgetting their style of play or to the coaches in their new teams in the higher level forcing it out of them? I personally see it as the latter. Much like Fitzpatrick went from crazy gunslinger to timid INT thrower AFTER that presser where Gailey told the media he was going to "work with Ryan" on his penchant for throwing into double-coverage and taking too many chances with hsi throws. I mention that because of your comment about the "backup QB syndrome", which also illucidates your opinion regarding the Fitzpatrick argument.

Players act one way with one coach and then go to another team and many times you see them "revert" back to what they were like before their previous coach got their paws on them, and often they flourish. I expect that's going to be Kassian. As happy as I am to get us another Calder candidate on this club, I am going to always wish we had a coach that, in my opinion, didn't keep trying to get his players to focus on positioning over finishing checks to the point where he screws with their heads.

Don't forget their kids in juniors, full of confidence and they feel invulnerable. Plus their around kids their age, that is a big big point. Once they actually get to the big club their a little older, a little wiser and rather than 17 year old timmy you have to hit its a 35 year called Bertuzzi who's already ended someones career.

You think that won't change your game?

  5. Am I seeing this right? That guy was using the hockeydatabase website? Instead of having their own database of players, a league rep has to go to a webpage with a bunch of ads? That's classic NHL right there.

    Interesting stuff though.

And what if Hodgson turns into Mark Messier (or insert the name of whichever great 80s/90s center you'd like)?

He probably had facebook open and had to switch when the camera got turned on....

  6. It doesn't matter how many points a team has when it comes to determining their chances of winning the lottery. If you finish last with 2 points or finish last with 60 points, you still have the same odds. These are the odds from last year. I don't think it changes from year to year, so the CBJ have a 25% chance of having their ball drawn, but they also maintain the #1 spot if none of the next 4 teams wins the lottery as no team can move up more than 4 spots.

    Edmonton - 25.0%

    Colorado – 18.8%

    Florida – 14.2%

    N.Y. Islanders - 10.7%

    Ottawa – 8.1%

    Atlanta – 6.2%

    Columbus – 4.7%

    New Jersey - 3.6%

    Boston (from Toronto) - 2.7%

    Minnesota – 2.1%

    Colorado (conditional/optional from St. Louis) - 1.5%

    Carolina – 1.1%

    Calgary – 0.8%

    Dallas – 0.5%

Thanks for that, I still think going for a no.1 pick is a bad idea for the Sabres. I'd play the season normally and see where we land. Maybe try some new styles, focus on having fun rather than desperately winning or losing to plan for the draft. Sounds stupid but it might work for the guys who have struggled this season, especially Leino.

I know that. I'm not sure what your point is.

    Possibly to inform me. :D

  7. If both players have an even chance of developing to their potential, Game Theory says we have the best chance of winning this trade:

If Both fully develop, we win because we have a True #1 Center, and those are more valuable than power forwards, even Lucic.

If Cody Develops and Zack does not, obviously we win

If neither develop, we win because without any further development, Cody is already a decent third line center, Zack is just a fourth line body.

And of course, the third option is that Zack develops in the Neely-Lucic style and Cody is stuck on the third line as a placeholder center. In this case we lose.

    We'll all know by 2015!

Interesting on the breakdown yesterday the guys were saying that this is a dangerous game by the Nucks as going for the 'Boston are successful so we'll be like them' mould doesn't always work. A little bit of concern thats what their trying.

As an aside, I hope both players turn out good, but Hodgson fits our needs better.

  8. I like the trade a lot. That being said, you are way off base with the above comment . Neither Tropp or Foligno have anywhere near the offensive skills that Kassian brings to the table. Unless there is a dramatic change in their development, Foligno and Tropp are both bottom 6 guys.

You do know that the NHL holds a lottery prior to the draft, correct?

Yes but rarely in this kind of circumstance does it not go to a team so amazingly pathetic as the Blue Jackets. I believe the lottery works so that the worse team has a higher chance of a higher pick, hence my prediction.

  9. I agree the Nuck fans are beside themselves with grief on this deal, but after thinking about it overnight, I think it is good for both sides. Kassian has shown a scoring touch, but has seemed lost at times with how to incorporate his game into the pro-game. Could be Ruff, could be just too many wings and not enough ice time to develop, not sure. Sounds like Hodgson had a similar issue in Coover. I still think Kassian could turn into a Dustin Bufglyn (sp?). But the Sabres need a talented young center and Hogdson seems like that kind of player. Either way it is worth the risk. Getting rid of Grags is addition by subtraction, don't know much about the D guy and if he adds anything to the Sabres that is icing on the cake.

All in all fans on both side need to breath and think both sides took calculated risks without giving up the kitchen sink and could get something in return. The Gaustad deal is a steal IMO.

Though, I still think Darcy is an infuriating duck with the way he communicates and seems ignore the immediate needs of this team overloading at one or two positions and ignoring others. Finally, he got one center! Duh... However, the Sabres still need a number 1 center and I hope they finish last to get they can after this season appears lost and I am not excited any center potentially out there that won't cost a kitchen sink and a house and whatever.

At least Marcy seems to be taking a methodical approach to rebuilding this team and that gives me hope. P.S. Ruff can only do so much with no centers and wingers playing at the position. I think this may have been his most difficult coaching year ever because of the lack of center and all the injuries especially Hecht's.

1st Bolded: CLJ have a lock on no.1 overall. We have 4 picks in the 1st two rounds plus centerman in the system to sign. I'm not too worried. Also Hodgson is supposed to be a good top two center. Remember originally neither Drury or Briere were no.1 centers yet they worked well as a tandem. Maybe, just maybe, Roy and Hodgson could work as well.

2nd Bolded: Yer, centers do actually cost a bucket in this day and age. That was Darcys point. Hodgson was perfect for us. Sure someone of Myers size and mobility at center would be amazing but it's not going to happen unless we give up a massive amount.

We were weak at center, we're not a little stronger. With Roy, Hodgson, Ennis, Boyes, Hecht and/or one ofthe 4th liners able to play center we should be ok.

  10. You guys realise he was told to be more physical both in Roch AND by the Sabres staff? There were articles devoted to the damn story. He just wasn't that guy, in the same vain Gausted wasn't. Their big guys who can take and dish hits and while their not Pyatt soft their not playing hockey for the physical side. If we want that we need to get someone with a psycho streak.

  11. At this point DR would have to be ordered to make any trade, especially one of the "core". I just can't believe that Mr. Pegula and Mr. Black will be buying what DR has been selling them for much longer.

At this rate it really is only a matter of time. Pegula has made a pledge to win a cup as owner of the Sabres. If DR and LR can't do it they'll be shown the door.
  12. I can't believe I am doing this.....but Stafford might be fine with a new coach and a few new leaders here.

The time to get rid of the core was 2-3 years ago. Now almost all of them except Vanek and Pominville are at low points in a trade value perspective.

You dump the GM and coach and give the rest of the season to sort out who you can salvage with a different on-ice philosophy. Not to say you don't end up shipping out some of these guys, but it isn't smart right now. We are going to end up overpaying for a few new players and bring them into the same tired system, only to find out next year the GM, coach and all your players suck and you are stuck in hell for 3 more years.

Stafford has had one good season, it seems to be me he needs a session with Mike Keenan, or a Sutter. Either way he needs a big kick up the arse. If Ruff isn't doing that then that is a big failing on Ruffs part.

  13. Reopened with the faintest of hopes that the thread remains on topic...

    1. Let a puck go right under his stick behind the net in the first period, and then skated away rather than battle for it.

    2. He actually did fight for one in the third period. He didn't come up with it, but he was in there. I couldn't believe my eyes.

    3. WTF was that on the shootout? That's not even trying. That's giving up.

I want him gone so, so badly.

+1 this. The guy is a waste of space at this stage imho. He shows no consistent effort to be the best and be a leader. I can't remember, his still got an 'A' hasn't he as well?

  14. So let me get this straight........it IS possible for a few strong, entrenched voices to dominate philosophy and message to a point that it becomes so stale, that 90% of the others tune it out and no longer have the drive or will to perform here on a regular basis?

AAAAAANNNNND...............on top of it you highly support the owner of the structure to shake things up by chasing these few entrenched individuals away for the good of the entire group?

I'm gonna just step back and let that sink in for a minute...................

And Chz......feel free to move this post to the Lindy Ruff thread..........

No, I don't support anyone being 'chased away'. I support a valid point being made, i highly disagree with someone who told him to shut up and go back to his corner.

I'm not really sure why you think I'm a big supporter of Staff, Roy and the others being called into question because I'm not. I agree Stafford should go when we are healthier, Roy should be given until the end of the season to turn his game around, Miller is still our no.1 in my eyes. Ruff is the biggest point of disagreement, I believe he should stay and that he is better than most coaches out there, Regier needs an assistant/replacement. Anyone I've missed?

  15. My observation isn't based on this season alone. Roy gets his points. I'm suure he'll get them this year too. But it's smoke and mirrors. He's consistently one fo the guys on this team that backs off when the game gets tough. Glides into loose pucks instead of going hard after them. He's prone to weak stick check attempts and lets off the gas in the D zone. He's not a guy who inlcudes hard work into his game and gets exposed when the opposing team is working their ass off. He's been playing that way for most of his career so this isn't a knee jerk reaction. I've had my fill of him.

At the moment, I'll take a lazy scorer over a hard working one who doesn't get the job done. We, however, have both. Goose is a tough, hard working center who I believe is a great role model as well.

I see. So now you are lumping in LabattBlue (the guy you actually responded to) with the chronic complainers. Nice. Maybe you should stick to moderating if you are going to start throwing that stuff around.

    Jsut sayin'....

Like it or not the biggest constant complainers on this board at the veterans, often not expressing any more discussion or opinion. This board is stagnating because of that. If SDS is trying to shake things up so the board doesn't die then all power to him.

People, well let's narrow that down, me and you, see it differently. You have a different perspective than I. You've been around since what I assume is near inception (no insult meant). I been around since Vanek and Roy were born. I think, since I've been watching and following the Sabres, they done fairly well with what they've had. Got real close a few times and at least stayed competitive most years through the thick and thin of owners.

I AM expecting more out of this team, more from management and coaches, don't get me wrong there. It IS a pure waste of my emotional time to bitch and complain about how they win, how they lose, how they talk to the press, how they get blown out once in a while.

What do I want to see happen? I want my Sabres back. ALL of them. I want the first two games of this season back. I want them to play hard and throw the puck at the net like they did in those first two games as much as possible.

Who do I want gone? Stafford's one. Roy may be another. Those moves are next to impossible to make right now with the injuries they have.

After X-mas the team should be falling back into place. Myers, Boyes, Leino, Kaleta, Ennis, and most likely a healed Gerbe. I don't think one of the injured is affecting this team right now. It's all of them put together. I'd give it 10 games after they are all back to proclaim judgement.

    :clapping: +1
