  1. Players crash the net much harder in the playoffs. The most successful playoff goalies are those who absorb pucks and control rebounds. Until he fixes that, I have little confidence in his ability to lead us on a deep run in the playoffs.

Can he get us to the playoffs? Probably, but is that good enough?

Agree with you about rebound control, but ain't nobody crashing his net hard and coming out with their nose and/or jewels intact!

  2. Didn't follow the GD thread at all but watched entire game on NBCSN.

I thought this was one of the Sabres best games of the year, despite the result.

Good goaltending, adequate defense, and snake bitten on offense, shut down by the King at his best.

If they played like this every night, we'd be ahead of the Bruins in the standings and this board would be blowing up!

Now, if they could stop the bipolar good game / bad game, we'd be on our way ‼️

  3. Interesting side note on Toronto. They have won 6 of their last 8 games, 4 in OT/SO. And 7 of their last 10 games have gone into OT, the last 4 in a row. Wonder how much longer the young guys can keep up with the NHL grind going into OT more often than not. If they do make the playoffs, they are gonna be shot.

Don't worry, the Leafs are not making the playoffs!

  4. Apathy has replaced optimism for a large contingent of the loyal fan base, and this is so sad to see.

The Sabres will always be my team; they were on TV here and although I had nothing really pressing to do, I didn't watch a minute.

I went to the gym and made much better use of my time.

WTF do Murray and Bylsma think they're doing, putting out a putrid product like this? Come on, Terry, keep on your roll and make it two HC firings in one week!

And another thing. Living among all of these obnoxious Boston sports fans, do you think for one minute they'd tolerate what we have to put up with? And they'd be right, for once!

C'mon, Buffalo brethren, rise up and be heard!

  5. Flynn is a role player on a good team.  He has his place, his role on the team, and he fulfills it.  Grant was an AHL callup who held his own while he was here, but had trouble keeping that high level of play up.  I like having him down on the farm and he's a decent depth guy to go to.

    Agree. Grant >>Ellis

Another indication of how far we've come!

  6. we need to get the word tank out of our vocabulary......this team is trying to win...ridiculous injuries but they happen to every team

Agree that they are in no way tanking, but really??  The number and nature of injuries to this team are ridiculous, but they do not happen to every team.

I have no theory as to why, but this team is snake bitten with injuries.

    Because Buffalo? :wallbash:

  7. It sounds like Boston is wayyyy in your guys' heads. I'm just as down on Bylsma as the next guy, but losing to Boston after a very unlikely win against the Rangers is not the franchise-defining disaster you're making it out to be. The Eichel high couldn't last forever.

Hey, facts are hard to argue against. It's not just yesterday's game we're talking about.

Until the Sabres can beat the Bruins regularly, we ain't going anywhere!

  8. So now we've lost the first 2 games this season against hated Boston - AND.... the Sabres have scored ONE goal in 2 games against Boston!

This is not the Stanley Cup winning Boston of years gone by either, but a vulnerable Boston. The Bylsma-coached Sabres have won only 1 game out of 6 played so far against Boston.   In fact, in those 6 games, the Sabres have scored 11 goals total! Take out the 6-3 win almost a year, ago, and in the past 5 games vs Boston, the Sabres have scored an atrocious  1 goal per GAME!!!   That's a terrible performance against one of the Sabres' biggest rivals.

That should not be acceptable - the Sabres coach needs to coach wins vs Boston.  Pegula or someone in the front office should be making that very clear to Bylsma.

Excellent point! To me, Boston is the measuring stick for the progress of the rebuild. Not Toronto, not Ottawa, but the (not so) Big (not so) Bad Bruins. It's not as acute as the Patriotis that afflicts the Bills, but the Sabres too often look flat, or intimidated, or I don't know what when facing the Bruins.

Boston is very well coached but talent-wise not as good as the Sabres.

They are a team we need to jump over and dominate if the ascent of the Sabres is going to happen.

  9. They wouldn't be able to steal the Bisons name, but I fully support adopted blue and gold.

The original four finalists for the team name were Blue Devils (no), Bullets (no), Bills and Nickels. I don't think any of those are good enough for today (Nickels would've probably been one of those names everybody just got used to and liked in time).

Buffalo Lights (Buffalo is the City of Lights)

    Buffalo Expos (Pan-Am Exposition reference)

    Buffalo Wings (mmmmm)

None of those are good. I've got nothing.

    How about the Buffalo Ralphs?

As in, "...The Bills make me want to Ralph"

OK, I'll go back to lurking!

  10. What a great man he was.

Quick story epitomizing how down to earth he was:

My son was about 12 and we were on vacation in Siesta Key about 20 years ago. He comes back to our condo and tells me he just spent time with a group of other people in the hot tub and one used to be a hockey player. Son had never heard of him ( yes it was #9) but said he was really cool and talked with him for quite a while about everything and nothing.

When I told my son who he was, and many considered him the best ever, he said to me, "But he was just such a nice guy..."

    RIP Mr. Hockey

  11. With the Pens kicking butt like they are, does this mean that GMTM needs to change the blueprint for the Sabres'

rebuild? In other words, make them less like the Kings and instead go for more speed? After all, every other GM

seems to copy the current top dog...

  12. Speed kills!

Pens can pinch and pressure the puck knowing they can cover most misses by beating the Sharks in foot races.

Sharks defense is terrible this series. Polak and Dillon are liabilities, and Braun isn't much better. Even Vlasic looks pedestrian.

They have more trouble keeping the puck in at the blue line than any pro team I've seen in a long time, and Pitt's offensive zone time is ridiculous much of the time.

Really not a Penguins fan, but I am very impressed by their run this year. They're making a pretty good team look quite awful.

  13. Fat tire has it's moments; Someone told me it's a lot better on draft rather than bottle. The Ranger IPA isn't bad either way; I think I have one bottle of that left in the fridge.

My insider tells me that New Belgium's Citradelic Tangerine IPA is great, and the Rampant double IPA is quite good also.

Coming your way tomorrow in NY state!

  14. What is so frustrating is that four out of every five games we get exactly the same Sabres:

    • goaltending that isn't good enough to steal games or bad enough to blame for the losses
    • a structured defence where we don't give up a lot of chances or make a lot of turnovers
    • a structured offence that rarely takes risks forces breakdowns or creates many open chances
    • relatively balanced zone time and scoring chances
    • next to no offence in the first period
    • next to no offence from the back end
    • games that are generally still up for grabs with 10 minutes left
    • a lot of long passes that are tipped into the offensive zone or missed and called back for icing
    • consistent effort through to the end, but very little animosity or edge
    • line choices and ice time based on tactical game-planning rather than player chemistry or actual performance
    • no obvious emotional reaction from the coach to his team's performance or the opponents

I like that we are smart and consistent; its way better than last year's beer league hockey.

But I feel like it's the same movie every night. It's by-the-book and predictable. Where is the drama and the art?

We are the hockey equivalent of a dedicated small town accountant.

Excellent post.  First Star of the month!
