  1. I am not opposed to trading ROR, but I would have hoped for better and younger prospects coming the other way. Two 30 year olds? WTF? I guess the GM wants to have veterans around some of the young players to guide them with their experience. We'll have to wait and see.

I am not a fan of Housley as a head coach. He showed me nothing in his first year. Why would he suddenly get better?

  2. Your first statement is simply wrong, Myers plays 20+ minutes and is a key figure on their PP. Armia anchors their 3rd line. Zadorov plays in their top 4 D and over 20 minutes a night.

As to the McNabb trade you are completely wrong. http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/article/la-kings-acquire-d-brayden-mcnabb-from-buffalo-sabres-in-multiplayer-deal-shuffle-roster

We gave up McNabb, Parker and 2 2nd rd picks for Fasching (a former 4th rd pick) and Delo (a former 3rd rd pick). The 2 picks given back to LA were the 2 picks LA gave us for Robyn Regher. We have since moved Delo to Montreal for AHLer Redmond. This was a terrible trade then and now that Fasching is looking like a career AHLer, it looking even worse.

You're right about Fasching. I thought the trade was horrible back then, but I was hoping Fasching would become a top forward in the NHL and salvage that trade. As it turns out the trade still looks terrible. Fasching looks like an AHL regular. Murray gambled too much on hope and not enough on reality. He really set this team back years.

  3. You can't grade Murray's late round draft picks yet because there hasn't been enough time. This is a recording.

Murray sucked and I'm glad he's gone.

He was an arrogant miserable sour puss who thought he was a genius. He squandered all the draft capital that Darcy Regier acquired before him. He overpaid on virtually every trade. He doesn't deserve any credit for drafting Jack Eichel since that was obvious. He gave up a 1st round choice for Lehner which was atrocious. Mark Pysyk was traded for a useless bag of pucks. The team and organization is worse off because of him. And by the way, the team is still in last place.

His grade is clearly an "F"

  4. Evander Kane is a very good hockey player. The Sabres were a bad team. He did pretty well on a very bad team.

There might be a separate thread for this subject, but why has Phil Housley been given a free pass for the Sabres demise this year? I've heard virtually nothing pointing the blame at him. Maybe I just haven't noticed amidst all the other failures.

  5. With the first pick in the 2018 NHL draft the Edmonton Oilers select ....

Last place and you only get an 18.5% chance of getting the top pick? This is not right.

Does the NHL want the worst teams to improve? Apparently not.

The NFL system is still the best in many areas including the draft order.

  6. It’s just not going to happen. The Sabres clearly have no interest.

No, Kane is gone. Also,I highly doubt San Jose signs him. San Jose just got a quality rental and didn't give up too much. On paper, the Sabres lost this trade. I'm disappointed.

It's not hard to be a bottom feeder every year when your GM's keep losing trades. Let's face it: the Sabres are where they are for a reason.

  7. What I like from the new GM is the emphasis on building the team from the bottom up. The previous failed GM sacrificed the foundation by trying to build from the top down. The utter failure in Rochester was a sign that any success (which never happened anyway) under the previous GM would only be temporary. The foundation was neglected.

The new GM understands the importance of building the farm system! I said repeatedly that the Sabres would never achieve success until the Amerks were good and they never were good under Murray.

Any conclusions about Botterill are clearly premature, but I like the general direction and philosophy so far. If he can build the structure of the organization to be sustainable over many years by developing and acquiring good talent, I am cautiously optimistic for the future. I was never optimistic about the surly and negative demeanor of Tim Murray.

  8. This is an interesting trade. Minnesota dumped 34 yr old Pominville's huge contract and Scandella coming off hip surgery to Buffalo for 27 yr old concussion prone Ennis and 25 yr old power forward Foligno. Plus Buffalo gives up a 3rd round pick and Minn gives up a 4th round pick.

Personally, I believe Pominville's best days are way behind him so adding his huge salary for two more years is puzzling to me. Scandella is a question mark based on his hip problem. Ennis is also a question mark based on his concussions. If Ennis avoids further injury he has the potential to be the best player in this deal. He has the most upside. Foligno apparently does not fit the style of play the new Sabres are planning to employ.

There is no way to know how this trade eventually works out at this point. If Scandella becomes a solid top 4 defenseman for many years, I believe the Sabres will be pleased with the deal.

  9. I think Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News had it exactly right. Vegas probably told Buffalo that they would take Ullmark. The Sabres asked what would you need to leave Ullmark alone? The Sabres can't afford to lose Ullmark since they are not deep at goaltender and are likely to lose Cal Petersen to free agency. The answer from Vegas was we will take Carrier. As a result, the Sabres protected Ennis and left Carrier unprotected to satisfy Vegas. Carrier is easier to lose than Ullmark at this point.

This explains why the Sabres protected Ennis instead of Carrier. There is no way Vegas is taking one of the Sabres' bad salaries! (Ennis, Moulson or Bogo)

Vegas looks like they could have a goalie and defense better than Buffalo next year. It will be interesting nontheless.

  10. Housely is a big question mark to me. Honestly, I think it's a big gamble to hire someone with no NHL head coaching experience. I hope he is very successful in Buffalo. Time will tell if this was a good hire. I hope he recruits some top level assistant coaches. Good luck Phil.

  11. As for how draft picks have been used in that regard...I kind of have the break-down of numbers, since the 2000 NHL draft. (Granted, this isn't just limited to Murray or Botterill.)

Buffalo ranks 3rd drafting Major Junior players at 52.1%, 20th in NCAA players at 27.1%, and 25th in European players at 20.7%.

Pittsburgh ranks 22nd in drafting Major Junior players at 40%, 1st in NCAA players at 42.4%, and 28th in European players at 17.6%.

But Murray definitely leaned heavily towards CHL and European players, while the Penguins continue to lean on NCAA players in the draft and undrafted free agency.

In his three drafts, Murray drafted 6 NCAA players...Eichel, Fitzgerald, Borgen, Murray, Nyberg and Chukarov. (Nyberg was scouted out of the SuperElit, so he could be considered a European...all the others were in the United States.)

Right now the Penguins currently have just one unsigned CHL player in Connor Hall, two unsigned euros in Gustavsson and Almari, and nine unsigned NCAA players in Bjokqvist, Pavlychev, Masonius, Jones, Lafferty, Angello, Byron, Tiffels, Birks, and they just signed Taylor who was a draft pick...they also signed Zac Aston-Reese as a free agent to an NHL contract, as well as NCAA free agents Troy Josephs and Dylan Zink to AHL contracts.

Long story short, I think we will see quite a shift in how we draft, and Botterill will begin to lean heavily on the NCAA with his draft picks.

Just a few others NCAA players they've brought in throughout the last few years...

Thomas Di Pauli - Signed as an free agent, after he "Vesey'd" the Capitals.

Ethan Prow - Undrafted NCAA free agent

Conor Sheary - Undrafted NCAA free agent

Carter Rowney - Undrafted NCAA free agent

Teddy Bluegers - NCAA draft pick (2nd round)

Bryan Rust - NCAA draft pick (3rd round)

Jake Guentzel - NCAA draft pick (3rd round)

Sean Maguire - NCAA draft pick (4th round)

Josh Archibald - NCAA draft pick (6th round)

Scott Wilson - NCAA draft pick (7th round)

Ian Cole was an NCAA draft pick in 2007, which is when Botterill started working as a scout.

Brian Dumoulin was an NCAA draft pick in 2009, when Botterill was working as a scout.

Justin Schultz and Chad Ruhwedel were NCAA players, whom Botterfill could've/would've scouted.

Lol, again, needless to say...I think Jason Botterill really likes NCAA hockey players, whether it's in the draft or free agency.

(***Sources for the draft numbers are from the Hockey News draft preview magazine...all other information is through my own research.)

Throw in Sidney Crosby, Malkin, Kessel and you might have something to work with. I wonder how those guys would do with Gionta, Girgensons, etc.?

  12. The tank was the worst decision ever made by the Sabres.

Never underestimate the value of luck. In the lottery system, luck can change your fortune immensely. The Sabres never caught a big break at the right time. Edmonton caught lightning in a bottle with McDavid. Winnipeg did the same with Laine. You can go back a few years to Pittsburgh to Crosby and Malkin for more luck.

I'd rather be lucky. Will Buffalo ever get lucky? I guess they did once when they got Gil Perreault, but that was almost 50 years ago. They're due!!!

  13. Contrary to the masses, I think Murray deserved to be fired. What exactly has he achieved? The Sabres were the 5th worst team in the NHL this year. They were getting worse, not better. Horrible! He even made Rochester a worse team.

Murray hired Dan Bylsma. Horrible!  I honestly think Murray got the worst end of most of the trades he made. He came into the organization with a pile of assets (draft picks) and he dealt them away freely with little to show for it. The organizational depth wasn't very good under Murray. His results were not good enough period.

The team needs a new direction. The coach/GM combination wasn't working.  I think Murray was very unpopular with the players and staff. He has a harsh and sour disposition most of the time and I'm guessing people didn't like to work for him.

It's history now. Time to move on.

  14. These 4 players will cost the Sabres about $18 million next season. The 2017-18 salary cap is expected to be about $76 million. So basically, our brilliant GM has managed to allocate 25% of the team's cap space on 4 terrible excuses for hockey professionals who make this team worse every time they step onto the ice.

This, folks, is why we can't have nice things. By nice things, I mean a team that makes the playoffs and entertains us. Remember this thread when they try to explain why we couldn't keep all three of Eichel, Reinhart, and Kane.

As far as I'm concerned, it's time to give Murray the same level of scrutiny that we've been giving Bylsma for months.

What a ###### disgraceful franchise. Sick of this ###### ######.

Bogosian, Kulikov, Franson and Gorges cost about $16.7 million.

Holy crap! Is it any wonder the team stunk. How can this be the foundation of a good team? Thank you Tim Murray for acquiring these gems!

  15. It's certainly not the worst season in Sabres history - '72, '87, '14 and '15 were far worse statistically.

And there have been many seasons where the dream died, most notably the death of Punch's team in '79, Scotty's in '86, post-Hasek in '02 and '08 after the co-captains left.

'03 and '04 and '12 and '13 were hard because the product on the ice was so bland and there was no sense that it was going to get better.

But emotionally I'm not sure there has ever been a team that delivered so little after promising so much.

We suffered through that for this?

There have been many seasons harder on the fans. I've seen them all and this season is not even in the top 10.

What is most disappointing to me about this season is that both the Sabres and the Amerks were worse than last year. Tim Murray is clearly not the genius many people thought he was. I guess several of the bad deals he has made are now being reflected in the standings. Clearly, something must change.

  16. After the team has gone 2-8-2 in their last 12 despite GMTM's pep talk and it's becoming a fait accompli that DD is going to be shown the door for this team's lack of improvement in the standings, the next and only question left is should GMTM keep his job as well?

This is highly unlikely but there is growing body of evidence that he may not be the man for the job or at the very least, PSE needs to hire someone to mentor him like Tor did for Shanny.

    1) Roster is hopelessly flawed.  This is mostly about the 4 lousy D he acquired, and his failure to properly build D depth, but also the abundance of forwards that aren't really helping the team.

    2) Poor professional player evaluation.  Look no further then the D.

    3) Mediocre trades and acquisitions.  Poor trades like the McNabb and Pysyk deals headline the list, but with the except of ROR, all the major trades have some questionable aspects like the taking on Legwand and his cap hit in the Lehner deal.  Add the length and size of the Moulson contract.  Right now the Sabres are saddled with 4 terrible contracts to the tune of 20 mil and all were either given or acquired by GMTM despite only 3 years on the job.  Frankly only FA acquisitions Gionta and Okposo are earning their paycheck.

    4) Bombastic personality and attitude.  His pep talk failed to inspire the team, especially when you consider he also recently blamed the players for a bad road trip in the media.  They may not be playing hard for DD anymore, but this may also be a response to playing for GMTM.  This might also be hurting his ability to recruit, especially younger players to Buffalo, such as Vesey, Bayreuther, Caggulia, and now Petersen.  With Eichel and Risto to play with you'd think people would be clamoring to come here.

    5) Rebuild plan might also be hopelessly flawed.  He told everyone that he could build a contender in 3 years.  His plan to trade assets for youngish vets to move the team into contention faster has clearly failed, mostly because he done a crappy job of acquiring these youngish vets.  Kane, Bogo, Franson, Kuilkov, ROR, Lehner and Okposo were all part of that plan.  None of the defenders have worked and their is reason to worry that Kane might want out and that Lehner, although much improved, has some significant flaws in his game to keep him from being the anchor for the team long-term.  He has now retreated from his earlier statements.  No surprise, but now if he goes toward the traditional rebuild, he has traded away significant assets that should have been in place.

    6) He hired DD ;) .

Once he pushes DD out the door, the 2nd coach he'll have fired, the focus will be solely on him.  He created this mess and now he has no choice but to own it.  If we don't make significant progress under his new coach, there is no one left to blame is there?

There are several good points here.

I get the impression GMTM was so anxious to clear out all the Darcy Regier players and draft picks that he made several significant mistakes doing so. He hated Regier so much he has never even spoken his name aloud since he took over as GM.

As a whole (to this point), Tim Murray has largely failed. I don't think he will be fired soon, but Bylsma might be used as his scapegoat and get canned.
