  1. People are making way too much of this "not coaching" thing IMO.

I get it, if you don't like RK then this is about as good a one-liner that you can have to use as ammo against him, but c'mon. It's the team's first game in almost a year - play on instinct and get the feel of playing hockey again as opposed to getting grilled on the tiny details right off the bat. I don't think it's crazy or uncommon to the rest of the league. His biggest mistake was letting it go public.

I'll take that a step further. Rank these players in the order you would pick them today:

    • Jack Hughes
    • Kappo Kakko
    • Kirby Dach
    • Bowen Byram
    • Alex Turcotte
    • Moritz Seider
    • Dylan Cozens
    • Philip Broberg
    • Trevor Zegras
    • Vasily Pokolzin

Real tight top 10 there IMO. I'm betting personal lists will be all over the map.

Good question. I'm not sure that i've seen enough of all of them to be able to comment confidently, though Zegras and Cozens took center stage the last couple weeks to make that comparison a bit easier.

To your point though, it doesn't seem that there is much separation. I'd say Zegras may jump up the board the most. We know that we think Cozens will be strong, and i've read good things about Seider. I think Hughes and Kakko will be fine, even with their underwhelming rookie years.

  3. If you could re-do the 2019 draft today, what does everyone think the Sabres would do if both Cozens and Zegras were available at 7? Still Cozens?

I don't know what i'd do myself, and somewhat of a crazy question after Cozens led Canada in scoring, but Zegras has kind of a different look to him IMO. Maybe not the presence on both ends of the ice that Cozens has, and surely the "flash" factor plays a role in potentially overrating Zegras, but you'd have to seriously consider both guys I'd think.

Edit: Not meant to be a "Sabres suck at drafting" post -- just that I remember there was some conversation about this when we made the pick, and the WJC rekindled it a bit.

Me likey the lines & pairings.

Was hoping Montour would be with Dahlin & expected McCabe-Ristolainen.  Mildly surprised that Krueger moved Miller to his off-hand as that didn't work well the couple of times it was tried last season, but that keeps the best 6 on the ice & lets Dahlin play w/ Montour who IMHO was his best partner last year.

Thought Eakin might end up with Thompson/Reider/Cozens but he definitely SHOULD be better than Lazar & Girgensons & Okposo will likely be getting 3rd line minutes, so that line makes sense.

Admittedly I don't know much about Rieder's game, but what do we think the plan is for the 4th line? It doesn't seem to be a traditional "banger" line if Thompson/Cozens are possibilities there. Doesn't seem like it's going to be an offensively focused line if Rieder is part of it. Just a mashup of our best remaining forwards? Spots filled by PKers and high potential youngsters? A little bit of everything?

By my eye it's varied from game to game, but he's been top 2 each game.  For example, I don't think he was Canada's best player last night, but he sure was their next best player last night.  He's a cornerstone for that team for sure.

What I've liked is he seems to always be in on a play.  He's consistently made things happen.  I can't wait to see how he looks against tougher competition.

    What NS said.

Canada is ridiculously deep and is playing everybody, so don’t picture him as always on the ice and controlling the games the way Jack does.

But he is on the first PP, he is killing penalties, he is playing against the other team’s best players, and he is leading the team in goals and in assists.

I think it is also pretty clear he is becoming the leader and will be the go-to guy when the games get close in a way they haven’t been so far.

    Thanks both plus NS.

To the bolded, completely understood. I guess i'm trying to get a feel for how he comares to his own teammates because that's who we'll be comparing him to in the NHL for the next decade. Tough to do vs guys a year behind like Byfield and Perfetti, sure.

The Nashville video made it seem like they were willing to drop to 11, so that offer was likely lower than that.

The video also showed they had 8 guys ranked as worthy of being in the conversation for pick 8. Since Byfield, Stutzle and Lafreniere weren't going to be there at 8, that also pushes their tier drop-off point to 11.

Nightengale says Quinn was definitely in the top 5 in the second half of the season. Given the organization's seeming emphasis on trajectories and growth curves, I'm going to say it was entirely possible Quinn finished ranked number 5 on their board. Given that emphasis on risers, and other tidbits I've seen and heard about who they liked, I think that Quinn was number two in their group of 8 (after the big three) and number one was Sanderson.

He said "a bunch of picks" was the offer he rejected. At least two of them must have been quite high, as in the top 50.

    • Carolina had 13, 41 and 53
    • Montreal had 16, 47 and 48
    • New Jersey had 18 and 20
    • Ottawa had 28, 33 and 44

Wouldn't have surprised me a bit if it was the Sens, especially given that Rossi and Quinn were both from Ottawa and both still on the board.

And if it was the Sens, Adams was smart to dismiss it.

All fair. I too wondered about Sanderson, seems like a good guess as to someone taken above them that they may have liked.

Also wonder how close Perfetti and Rossi were to making them change their mind.

Anyone know how many episodes there are going to be of this?

I’m interested in seeing how Quinn develops in relation to the players we passed up to get him.

Also hoping JJP pans out as well.

I know specific names are something they would never divulge, but I just wish we could hear what scenarios would have had to have played out for us not to pick Quinn? Who falling to 8 would have changed the pick? Or who was next if Quinn was gone? What was that offer for the 8th pick that he said no to on the phone?

Good series, but opens up so many more questions.

  8. Good episode. I also like seeing and hearing the inner workings of these kinds of things. Couple questions/thoughts:

    1. They mentioned Irwin and Reider were guys they had done their homework on and they wanted to make offers to if they were there. I wish we had a little more info on that -- what about those two exactly did they like so much relative to what else was out there?

    2. The involvement of Terry and Kim - how normal is that among the other GMs out there calling free agents, I wonder? Kevyn didn't show anything one way or another, but I wonder what his thoughts are as they chimed in during the call with Hall. Of course they own the team and can do whatever they want, but at what point does he think they are hurting the process as opposed to aiding it?

    3. Like dudacek, would have liked to hear a bit more about other players they were after and talked to. Maybe even a bit of that last call with the agent, though I see why that was left out. Even noticed the whiteboard was edited out so we couldn't see what was written there.

  9. Hasek. But those mid-2000s teams were when I really got into the team. Max was fun but frustrating like someone mentioned and Briere was always a favorite.

But i'll go Brian Campbell (hence the name). The smooth skating offensive defenseman who could also hit RJ Umberger so hard that he had no idea where he was..

Interesting.  Hutton and Rittich both have 1 year left at $2.75MM.  Rittich is probably better than Hutton, but he's clearly a notch below MAF and the AZ goalies.

Gaudreau has 2 years left at $6.75MM.

So maybe Reino and Hutton for Gaudreau and Rittich?

I could see the Sabres doing that deal.  Gaudreau is better, faster and more productive than Reino, and there are a number of reasons -- primarily a desire to retain the flexibility to sign Hall to an extension -- that the Sabres might not want to give Reino a long-term extension.

I could also see Risto or Montour as the primary Sabres asset going to Calgary, but this seems less likely, as Montour is only under contract for 1 more year and isn't as good an asset as Reino is.  The Sabres would need to include some sweeteners -- maybe Borgen and Mittlestadt?

I know it's tough to read a goalie based purely on numbers because they're highly dependent on the team in front of them, but with that said - not much about Rittich's stat line makes me think he's the upgrade in net that we're looking for.

Holes are holes they need to all be filled.

Also besides Calgary and perhaps Ottawa who both massively overpaid for their goalies, what teams have made big splashes thus far?

To me it's the totality of the situation that's somewhat disappointing thus far. Risking (at best) Kahun while potentially (at best) overpaying for Girgensons doesn't feel like a good start to improving the team.

Even Sabres fans don't seem to be aware of his value, so it doesn't surprise me outsiders don't.

His value is buried under an Everest of D usage.

I suppose that we should allow for the possibility that he actually isn't as valuable in the opinion of the professional talent evaluators as he is by a few on this board though, no?

  13. That’s an easy one. The Kane deal was completed around 2:30 pm. My guess is there wasn’t enough time to use SJ’s offer to solicit other counter offers and still get in line by 3pm. This is why the bigger deals usually get done in the few days prior to the deadline or in the morning.

Again no collusion, no conspiracy, but smart tactics by experienced GMs

The Kane deal was announced at 2:30 pm, that doesn't mean the deal was negotiated at 2:30 pm. Actually, it's more probable that it was the opposite of what you're saying -- that it was negotiated earlier and JBot did shop the SJ deal around to other teams and he didn't receive a better offer.

  14. I'll disagree with 11 about sidelines. Food there is better then 716 and wings there are way better then 716.

Gabriel's gate is great for wings. Big ditch you should check out for beers, it's further away but still in dt buffalo.

ColterBay has a good beer list and Allentown bars are right there. Also going to toss out cafe 59 also on Allen. Decent beer options and good sandwiches and soups.

    Thanks all.

Plenty of options for breweries/pubs and food. What about nightlife? Anything in the area of the arena?

  15. There are a number of hotels near KBC, but they are expensive.  There are also a number of them up the train line, like about a fifteen minute walk (or the free train ride would be five mins) but be careful:  anything that calls it an "express" or "garden" or "light" hotel is about ten bucks less expensive than a real room at a real hotel.  A "real hotel" being something with a bar and a hot meal, and not just a dispenser of Froot Loops in the morning.

Your best bets for wings in Buffalo are Gabriel's Gate (on the subway) and Thirsty Buffalo (not).  Your best bets for wings outside Buffalo  (suburbs) are Bar Bill, 911 Tavern, and Duff's.  I guess 911 is technically in Buffalo, but you'll need an Uber to get to that, or to the other two, anyway.

The best sports bars within walking distance of the arena are (716) -- awesome TVs, ###### food -- and Sidelines -- poorer TVs and, well, ###### food.

There are a lot of really nice dining options within walking distance of the arena, but none are sports bars.  There are even nicer dining options, in every price zone you can imagine, in the Elmwood Village (which includes the aforementioned Thirsty Buffalo for wings).  That area is about a $10 Uber from the arena, based upon my one experience now that Uber is here.

We also are close to Canada, and one of our long resident posters, d4rksabre, dances at a club there.  You'll have to ask him for the details.  There is an amazing Chinese restaurant called Ming Tei, and the casino up there is nice.

Thanks, appreciate it. I've heard about Duff's (which you did mention I see), Pearl Street, and Anchor(i think ?) for wings. Are those just touristy spots that aren't really as good as the Gabriel's and Thirsty Buffalo?

  16. I think a lot of us can help you here.  We need to know some basics:

    --What neighborhoods?

--What would you like to spend?

--Are you looking for partying / drinking or for nice dinners or for pubs or for what?

    1. Honestly not too sure. Would like to be close to Key Bank if possible I guess, but really looking to be somewhere where we can bounce around from place to place for a drinks. Saturday night maybe somewhere that is doing something for Halloween?

    2. Not too much of an issue. There are a few of us so we'll be splitting some costs. Not an issue.

    3. I guess more pubs/sports bars? Somewhere with a good variety of options would be best?

Also looking for the best wing place (hopefully in the area of the above) for first timers.

  17. Hi All. Long time no post. I've been lurking and reading for the past couple years, but not much posting.

First -- if there's somewhere that this can be merged into, by all means. I did a search to find another thread to just add on to but couldn't find anything.

Anyway, I'm from out of town and making my way into Buffalo next weekend for the Sabres game and maybe even the bills game with a few buddies. I've been to Buffalo once before, but really just a stop in and out.

My question for those familiar is where do I want to stay / spend my time? Obviously i'm not familiar with the city and want to check out whatever downtown (maybe?) has to offer while i'm there.

Anything and everything would be appreciated. Thank you all!
