  1. I'd really like to hit up Elk or Hunter Mountain. Hunter Mtn especially has insane deals this time of year ($89 for a liftside condo + a lift ticket??). Actually one of our local places arranged for a crazy good deal with Stratton in VT where you can stay at the Inn and get a full day lift ticket for $49.95 if you have a pass to the local place. I'd love to go, but have no one to watch my dog. :(

How about a kennel or doggie spa? Haha I know it sounds funny but when we went on a college tour last summer we left our very pampered toy poodle at the most amazing place. We had to drive a little out of the way to get him there but wow! They took great care of him and posted pictures to facebook everyday so we could see him. If it's an option for you, do a search in your area and most definitely read reviews and visit the place. I know, though, some dogs just can't be left so maybe that is the case for you. we left our little guy at another place years ago and he was traumatized and I never thought I would do it again, but then we found this "pet resort" and he seemed to be very happy there.
  2. On the plus side, your daughter got into one of the best schools in the country.

Yes, we are very happy for her! She is a self proclaimed "nerd" and very excited about attending a school where "fun goes to die".

I'm really hoping her financial aid covers what we need it to. This has been such a long and involved process. Filling out the FAFSA and CSS were eye opening to say the least. The college application process is not what it used to be. I would even say it has been a bit traumatizing, we've been at it for months. So many deadlines and details.

As for my complaint? Well, all financial concerns aside...I'm wondering how in the hell I'm going to handle the trauma of sending the first one off to college.

  3. Price of colleges...even SUNY if you factor in room and board.

My gosh you ain't kidding. My daughter got admitted to her "dream school" early action and my husband and I are in a bit of a panic trying to figure out how we are going to pay for it. We are not rich, but comfortable, and therein lies the rub. Low income = paid for, wealthy=no problem, we can pay. Middle class? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

It's University of Chicago and the tuition plus room and board and whatever else is almost $60,000 a year. Seriously. We will get some aid, and she has some merit scholarships. I hope the package is enough to make it viable for her. She really wants to attend that school very badly, and it really is perfect for her.

  4. Oh this is a lovely thread.

I also usually have at least three books going at the same time. My mood dictates which one I reach for in the narrow end-of-day time frame that this busy working mother/wife/mom has available. In my younger days pre-family, I used to spend hours with a book. I don't think I will get to experience that pleasure again until the kids are out of the house and I'm retired.

With that said, the husband just put in two walls of floor to ceiling bookshelves in the den. We have two Nooks in the house, but...well...we hang out at Barnes and Noble a lot, and lets just say that books are our weakness.

    Currently I am reading:

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. This was a suggestion from my youngest child. It's a teen read about everlasting life, and I find it not bad if a bit silly, but daughter was excited about it and wanted me to share it with her. A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do.

American Sniper by Chris Kyle. This is an autobiography of the "Most lethal sniper in U.S. military history". Mr. Kyle was a Navy Seal and very decorated. Not too far into it but I like it.

11/22/63 by Stephen King. I love him, he keeps me up at night. (can't wait for the new Dark Tower book coming in March).

Ariel by Sylvia Plath. I am not a huge fan of poetry, but this is a book I read when I'm pissed off at life. It lives on my nightstand.

And, like many of you, I have a legion in the queue.

  5. Timmay's is good but I like McDonalds. 79 cents for a huge coffee and it's rather good. I don't have to waste a ton of gas waiting in line either.

I do like Mickey D's for my afternoon cup...it's a good brew but WTF I pay $1.19 for a medium! However, running Timmy Ho's thru my cusinart in the mornings and sucking down that first strong, flavorful cup is one of the highlights of my day.

  6. Wow, I don't know what kind of coffee they're making out east but Tim's is the ####. I've got to have my cup every morning. Just can't find another chain or store product that compares. I live in a medium sized City and there about 10 in town. No matter which one I go to there is a friggen lineup out the door and the drive throughs are a mess....

Oh man I totally AGREE. We have a smattering of Timmy Ho's here in Ohio, mostly in Columbus, which is an hour away. My brother in law goes there twice a week and we have him pick us up a couple of cans of fine grind every month. We drink the hell out of it. No grocery store canned coffee can compare.

  7. congrats on the quitting. I wish a few people I know would quit. They've tried, but have not prevailed. It takes a lot of will power so kudos.

My only complaint today is having to go to calling hours for a HS senior that commited suicide in my town. His sister and my sister have been friends since they could run on the soccer field together, so she's coming home from Daemen today for the calling hours as well. It's really just too sad. :(

I am so sorry to hear of the death of another senior. In the high school in our town where my daughter is a senior, we have had 2 (TWO!) senior boys kill themselves just before the holidays. At about the same time, one town over, another senior boy killed himself as well. That makes THREE here in a short period of time. Renders me speechless...much like the Josh Powell story above. So much sadness.

  8. Living in a town that has a cookie factory is not a good thing.

In an attempt to live a healthier life, I quit smoking last year. Inevitably, a few pounds have creeped onto my little frame and I have been walking walking walking most mornings. Today is beautiful! Perfect day for a healthy, invigorating walk around the neighborhood.

Archway/Lance is baking this morning. Heavy, strong smell of warm chocolate chip cookies in the air. Makes it hard to focus...all I want now is a cookie instead of my usual yogurt/granola/berry breakfast.

  9. Wow. I didn't realize there are parts of the country where high-speed isn't an option. I guess it makes sense, but still ... dial-up?! He might as well hitch up the horse and buggy and take a fattened pig to the local town hall to pay property taxes. ;)

Believe it or not, there are still a lot of places where dial up is the only option. My friend and her husband own a dairy farm just about 50 miles south of Cleveland Ohio. She really is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by Amish. She drives to the library in town to surf the internet.

  10. So I bought a new car. Sirius is built in, free for 6 months. We were already subscribers to XM, and even though they are one and the same, they are NOT, really. In the car I traded away I enjoyed XM with Home Ice and all the games. With Sirius, Home Ice is on an "add-on" tier, which we called and added-on four freakin' days ago.

It's not there. Obviously, I may need a reboot but it should have been done 4 days ago when my husband called and reconfigured everything. So as I am realizing this today...hubby is unreachable at work, and I don't have any of the passwords and logins and bribes and first born children available so they won't even talk to me.

You get used to life a certain way. I will be driving the kid taxi tonight until 8:30. Normally, I love this time of year...I get a Starbucks...Sabres on the radio...I'm driving...picking up kids and dropping off. Maybe it will even snow. But, NO!

If I'm not home to watch...it better be on the damn radio or momma's gonna be pissed.

    I'm gonna call again :pirate:

  11. Are you browsing from a mobile device? If so, you may be seeing a profile pic, not the avatar - they both have the same avatar they have been using for as long as I can remember.

Yeah, when I visit the forum from my phone I never see any avatars.

    Happy Friday All!!!

I have to work, so no hockey on my big tv in hd. UPSIDE: I have a slingbox! Just trying to decide what to sling the game to. I'll be pretty busy, unless it rains. Probably the laptop, yes?

I got a new car :clapping: Smallest vehicle I have had (and only the second brand new one) since I was 19 and bought a new camaro. I have only had Suburbans and Excursions for many years...totin' kids, ya know? I got a Ford Edge (crossover) and it's pretty slick actually. Nice Fordtouch computer system in it, and fun to drive. Maybe I could sling the game to the car?

Well, work would probably miss me if I sat in my car all night. I'm the boss, so no worries I'll just plop down in the middle of everything and sling to one of the computers. Can't wait!

  12. Chz...I remember both days I lost both grandpas, and they sucked. I am very sorry for your loss.

As of May 26, 2011, the young stud I married in 1988 became a grandpa and that baby is nothing but a wonder to us all.

The wheel keeps turning...hang tough girl.

  13. I'll be married 23 years to the man of my dreams tomorrow! He works hard, is a fantastic dad, and treats me like a queen. Oh...and he has embraced hockey and fell hard for my team ever since I took him to the AUD for his first game the weekend we got engaged oh so long ago. HaHa...slipping and sliding all the way to Buffalo in my camaro...what a blast that was. He supports my passion, we have Center Ice, a slingbox, and sirius XM so we never miss a game here in Ohio. We take our kids to as many games as we can, whether in Columbus, Detroit, Toronto, or Buffalo. He buys me jerseys for Christmas, 40 year anniversary books, flags, magnets and whatever else Sabre related I want. He is awesome.

This morning he was coming off the midnight shift and stayed awake ALL DAY while the kids were at school.

    F'N FANTASTIC FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Oh the irony...life can be cruel and beautiful at the same time.

I have a senior in high school filling out college apps. After 23 years of marriage living fairly well but essentially paycheck to paycheck, the husband and I are finally both making some really good money....

just in time to fill out the FAFSA :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

  15. Couple of things:

I hate to complain about the weather because it is what it is...but c'mon...a foot of snow, tonight? Really? Flood watch, snow watch, flood watch, snow watch, flood watch, snow watch, all in the last two weeks.

Our community is going to try to pass a levy for new school buildings in May. The state says it's our turn for our share of state money to build, and we have to do it now. I agreed to try to get 10 people to vote "yes", and after talking to one belligerant, ignorant woman about it, I just don't want to do it anymore. We definitely need the new buildings, but I just don't have it in me to push people to vote for something that will raise their taxes in this economy. I said I would, though, and the deadline for my ten votes is today, and I'm stressed about it

Our unlocked cars sitting in our driveway got broken into last night. Scum took my husbands XM radio...again. It happened last summer and we did lock our cars for a time after that, but we live in a nice neighborhood so we got complacent again. Losing the $100 dollar radio for the second time was bad enough, but even scarier was the fact that I had a box ready to go to the post office in my car, full of my father-in-laws mail. He winters in Florida and shares a P.O. box with the business we are partners in, so I send his mail to him every few weeks. Cop said this is a federal crime and they have two cars out looking for the box hoping the Scum ditched it when they saw it contained only mail.

I have more but enough is enough. Time to move on.

  16. I just bought some stuff at CVS that rang up at $2.83. I gave the cashier $5.08 and she refused to take the nickel. I told her a couple times that it would get me a quarter back, but she still refused. Then when she entered the $5.03 into the register, she saw the change and finally understood it.

And following up on our stereotypes conversation from yesterday, there was no way this woman shouldn't have been able to do the math.

My husband likes to do this "math/change test" for fun. He says he does it to minimize the small change in his pocket, but I think he just likes to mess with people. And you're right, sometimes they will say "you gave me too much" and they refuse to plug the numbers in the register. It is both funny and depressing at the same time.

  17. College visits with our 17 year old. Next on the list...U of Chicago in a couple of days.

I had a flashback today of her knee-high and running into the kitchen excited about something and wanting to tell me, hugging my legs and smiling up at me...

How did we get here so fast?
