Observations: Sabres slowly learning how to fight back from early deficits

‘The final score does not tell the story. The Sabres limited dangerous scoring opportunities at 5-on-5, matched the Bruins’ physicality and controlled play at times, including a first-period stretch in which they had nine consecutive shots on goal.’

The Wraparound: Sabres tie the score twice before losing to Bruins 5-2

‘Former Sabres winger Taylor Hall helped the Bruins pull away with a goal in the third period. Hall has five goals and three assists for eight points in 10 games since the trade to Boston. Brad Marchand added an empty-netter.’

Retiring Ryan Miller: ‘Buffalo is always going to have a big part of my heart’

‘Miller, still beloved in Western New York for his heroics with the Buffalo Sabres from 2002-14, needed a few moments to collect his thoughts after watching a tribute video that included well wishes from family, former teammates and coaches and play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret.’

Sabres started winning, showcased rapid improvement in April

‘“It’s all about development,” interim Sabres coach Don Granato said on a Zoom call. “I keep saying it, we have to get better and so that is the push, to get better. Again, you compete every night to win. You lay a game plan, a strategy out to implement that targets the win. But you have to get better and we’ve seen that. Our players, there’s no question they feel that. It’s obvious when you work with them, they’re engaged in practices and meetings.’

Former Sabres star Ryan Miller to retire; Buffalo still special place for goalie

‘So Miller, the Sabres’ all-time wins leader, said he “wanted to do right by the fans.” Buffalo offered him special things – a career and a place to live and grow – so he repaid it by becoming an active member of the community through his Steadfast Foundation and other endeavors.’

Bruins score 3 unanswered goals in 3rd, beat Sabres 5-2

‘“We were battling. Boston is a tough team. That’s how they play. They play physical,” Buffalo defenseman Jacob Bryson said. “I thought we stood our ground. I thought we played well and we had our chances. … It was a good game. They just capitalized on a few more chances than we did.”’

Poor third period dooms Sabres against Bruins

‘The game did not stay tied long, though, as Boston forward Charlie Coyle cashed in on a Reinhart turnover six minutes later. Coyle’s sixth goal of the season made it 3-2 Bruins with 12:02 to play in regulation.’

Opinion: Sabres made too many third period mistakes to lose in Boston

‘Luukkonen had faced 40 or more shots in both of his starts before Thursday. Boston put 39 shots on him, but Granato said that prime scoring chances-against have been cut way down.’

Ryan Miller announces retirement at conclusion of 2020-21 season

‘In 540 career games with the Sabres, Miller finished as the franchise’s all-time leader in games played, wins (240) and saves (14,847). He also finished second in team history behind Hall of Fame goalie Dominik Hasek with a .916 save percentage, and third with a career 2.58 goals-against average behind Hasek and Martin Biron.’
