AN ODE TO THE OIL

By Tim Coghlan

It's been a little while in our beautiful River City

Since we drank from the chalice so silver and pretty

1990 was the year - lead by our fearless leader Mess

Such warriors make us proud to wear the Oil drop on our chests

Our depth on that team certainly forced our foes to study

Afterall we had K.Lowe, Mac T., Simmer and Huddy

Some things have changed since then, but not the blood sweat and tears

It may seem like a long time ago, but only if you measure in years

We no longer have Graves, Gelinas or The Rat

Stolli and Staios now sit where they sat

Bucky and Beukeboom and Dave Brown were our guys

Now it's Georges and Gator with that glare in their eyes

Our home has changed names * Northlands Coliseum was the start

Now it is Rexall Place where we all keep our hearts

As one fan of many who loves to cheer loud

I am one Edmontonian who holds his head proud

Over the past 15 years or so, we've taken our licks

But something is clicking in the year 2006

They didn't give us a hope, a prayer or a chance

We barely made it to the prom, it was supposed to be a quick dance

But the Wings flew into Edmonton and got a real fight

When the battle was over, for Detroit it was goodnight

With that feat behind us, surely there were supporters

"No ways, Sharks in 6" said all the reporters

So we boarded our plane, coaches and players

As all Oil fans cheered and said millions of prayers

2 down, then 4 straight was how we got it done

The Thorntons and Cheechoo were sent home to the sun

Conviction was high, we had proven 'twas not luck

Off to Anaheim now for a date with the Ducks

Coming home with a split was something we knew we could do

Who would have thought we'd win Game 1 and then we'd win Game 2?

Back to Oil Country to try to finish them off

It took intravenous fluids for Captain Smith and feisty Horcoff

The flu bug couldn't beat us - it was over in 5

One team was dead, the Oil was alive!

Now we prepare for the final battle - for Lord Stanley's prize

With hope and determination and fight in our eyes

When the team gets on board to leave, and the engines fire to a start

Each player knows that with them, they have 1 million hearts

The City of Edmonton is with you boys, go do us proud

We're with you in spirit and we promise to cheer loud

Drop the puck ref, we're ready * no team or city is more loyal

Our opponents bleed blood, but Edmonton bleeds Oil
