  1. matter, I hear all that, and I agree that it wouldn't have been feasible to get Funk or Card or someone up in time. My question is why let it get to that point? I don't know how many 25+ minute games Teppo has in him at age 38, and like I said, if we lose someone in-game, I'd rather not see us down to four defensemen... overall, I'd rather have a (gulp) Rory F-type player up with us at a minimal salary who can play when guys are banged up and can give guys like Teppo some nights off, rather than keeping Paile and/or Stafford up to play 7 and 9.5 minutes per game, respectively...

How is this for a joke (from the AP game recap):

"Ovechkin drew an automatic $100 fine for the hit, which will be reviewed by the league office to determine if further action will be taken."

For those of you scoring at home, here is how that breaks down: player "A" does something in egregioius violation of the rules, which the on-ice officials feel is an attempt to injure. NHL says "Bad boy, you owe us $100.00, Mr. $1 million-per-year superstar..." I mean seriously, wouldn't that be like one of us doing the same thing in a bar league and getting fined a quarter?

    More like a penny.

  2. i'd love to have miller start tomorrow and biron start on saturday... Not that i fear ottawa or anything, its just to showcase biron on saturday.

Sadly, I think this will happen. I think it sucks for Biron and the team.

Unfortunately, there's no way the Sabres can sit Ryan tonight for the home opener. He always gets the loudest cheers and the place will be bumpin' tonight. So Marty gets the road game against the Sens, which will be the 3rd game in 4 nights for the team. Toronto embarrassed the Sens at home last night, so they'll be out for blood. It just seems like Marty is getting hung out to dry (as much as one can be on this awesome team) in this scenario.

    Start Ryan in both games.

  3. If Edmonton can steal two, why can't we. I like the Sabres to win 2-0. I think this is the game that breaks their spirit. Canes throw 35-40 shots at the net and come up empty. I look for Dumont to score a PP goal and Afinogenov to notch an empty netter. This will be a nail biter as the entire third period will be played in the Buffalo zone with 18-20 shots on goal.

I'm headed the opposite way based on Lindy's comments (ofcourse, most of the time Lindy is fibbing) that the best defense is to take the game into the Carolina zone.

    I say 5-3 or 5-4, Buffalo.

  4. Throw out the games they lost, and they never let games get away? Who'd have thunk it.

They were SO close to being down three games to none against the Canadians. That Koivu injury coupled with their collapse in Game 3 took everything out of them. I kind of think the same thing happened to the Sens after Game 1, although it wasn't until Game 2 that the Sens had their spirits completely el_crushoed.

  5. Cam Ward is putting together a great run, but I would still give an edge to Miller. A slight edge, but an edge.

I agree, but I'd even be ok with saying it was even. To say that this is an edge for Carolina is curious. I'm taking nothing away from Ward, but Miller's been doing this all year. In years past I may have thought that the CBS guys knew something I didn't. Now I feel like they don't even watch the games.

  6. WGR says the ECF will start Thursday or Saturday. All night games will be at 8pm EST instead of 7pm.

On good link, one bad link...

    The Sporting News' Take

One final thing. I was listening to one of the Carolina radio stations, and the announcer (apeaking of Game 5 against the Devils) said: "I say the first period, but I had a lot of 'honey-dos', so I listened to the rest on the radio. Those guys (Canes announcers) are really funny to listen to.'

They then went on to talk about NASCAR and baseball. I really feel bad for Canes fans.

  7. I think I heard about a "Worst Metaphor" writing contest once. elcrusho, with your last sentence, you would be raising the Worst Metaphor Cup like a... like a... never mind.

I think elcrusho's last sentence is why we have the phrase "A for effort".

I feel the same way about Buffalo tonight, though.

  8. May 12, 1998

Mike Peca scores 1:24 into the second overtime as the Sabres take a three games to none lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 5-4 win over the Canadiens in Montreal.

    May 12, 1999

At Marine Midland Arena, the Sabres score twice early in the third period, on goals by Rhett Warrener and Dixon Ward, and go on to beat the Bruins 3-2 and take a two games to one lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

I was at that 1998 game in Muh-ray-ull. It was Senior week at Clarkson. I gotta say that the fans were very gracious even after losing a heartbreaker.

    That was one helluva night.

  9. Again, I haven't gotten to see the game, yet, but I was getting the feeling that some people here were "blaming" the loss on the refs. Usually, if the refs are calling a bad game, that goes both ways, though, right? We, as fans, often turn an unwitting blind eye to those bad calls that may favor us, so we see a poorly called game as only affecting us. My logic is just that if the refs were awful, they were awful for both teams, and the difference last night appears to have been Emery over Miller. If that is the case, then it is fine to say that the officiating sucked, so long as the stellar play of Emery is also acknowledged.

I agree...And to be honest, I was more speaking to those people, especially in the media, (and as much as I like Brad Riter and know he posts here, I think he's flat out wrong in this case,) that feel criticizing officials is only allowed when your team plays well. It's a non-sequitur.

The Sens deserved the win as much as the Sabres deserved the first 3...They had more goals when the clock hit zero. Emery was great, as was the Sens' pressure of the Sabres when they had the puck. I also thought Miller was stellar. Jay McKee was the worst Sabre on the ice IMO.

The officials WERE bad for both teams, but Fraser often appears to let his emotion towards the crowd affect how he calls games. I think this happened last night. Fraser was as childish as the people that booed the Canadian anthem or the people who booed the Sabres when they had a few bad power plays. I just can't accept a "professional" that takes a "I'll show them" approach to their job. The officiating was beyond old NHL last night. It was Kerry+pal imposing their own rules (in contrast with the actual rules) because that's how they think it should be, and no fans are going to tell him he's wrong. I have no patience for that kind of arrogance.

  10. I agree. All I've seen after every loss at every board is complaints about the officiating. That doesn't put the puck in the net or send a wide open shot wide of the net. The Sabres can and have played more disciplined than to give up that many penalties. So far as I have heard/read, the game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd. That means we had 20 minutes to close out the series and we didn't.

There is plenty of criticism for the Sabres' play on the boards. From what I seem to understand, if your team plays poorly, than the officials must have been good. I mean, there's no possible way that the Sabres can play like crap AND the officials can suck, right?

The Sabres were bad last night. The officials were awful. Emery was excellent. We still only lost by a goal.

Am I allowed to complain about God Bless America being sung instead of the national anthem? How about complaining about the knuckleheads that booed the Canadian anthem? Do criticisms of these things mean I think the Sabres played well and were "screwed" by Ronin Tinin or some drunk college kids? Sorry...Forget I mentioned anything BUT how bad the Sabres were last night.

  11. Was out all night and have the game on TiVo, again, but after reading here, I might wait till tomorrow night to give it a watch. All I'll say is that I hate when teams complain about the refs after a loss. I haven 't seen the game, so I'm not sure how bad it was, but in general, I am not a fan of that reaction, win or lose.

We couldn't expect to sweep this team, so best to just move on to Ottawa, at this point, no?

What is the logic behind not complaining about something that was unsatisfactory? Is it merely to feel above those that do?

I'll admit there is abuse in that area, but there's no reason to call a spade, a club.

  12. Ruff has to keep them motivated. There is absolutely no reason for this series to go back to Ottawa, and I think there is more pressure on the Sens to at least win one.

Ruff has to make sure that they understand that any let up will give that team life.

  13. Unfortunately i have to again Say congrats to the sabers... I only got to listen on the radio since i was at work all night so i really can't say much about the game... But from what i gather, the refs put away the whistles in the OT period - advantage sabres - not that it woulda changed the outcome - but maybe prolongued it. And don't get me wrong - im not blaming the Loss on the refereeing, because the five on three, and the penalty at the end helped us out a lot, and i really don't know if they were deserved at all.

I really don't know what to say more than that for now - that win really took the heart out of the city and The senator's fans. We all know a comeback is possible - I personally do not think it will happen, but i still back my team, and know that they have the ability to pull it off. Congrats to the sabers again, on a well-earned win. Hopefully the Sens can bring something so this awesome series can be atleast continued temporarily. I would comment more, but again - i only got to listen on the radio///rush to the bar tv.

You're a stand-up guy, Havlet...Even if you DO live in the wrong country/state. The series ain't over yet, but the Sens' gooses look pretty much cooked. The good news is that you're really only a goaltender away.

  14. I'm thinking Sens 4-1 (including an empty netter).

It's really tough to call, though. If Hecht is back and plays all-world again we could be in for another thriller. Maybe one of the goalies will stand on their head. Maybe they'll be a bench clearing brawl! Ok...Maybe not. But it'd be fun (until Colin-oscopy got through handing out suspensions, that is).

  15. On the sens Vaclav Varada, Chris Kelly, Martin Havlat, and Tyler Arnason were the only non 15 goal scorers. Havlat would have been atleast a 30 goal scorer, and Arnason only played a handful of games on a team that actually had skill. So as far as technicalities go - we only had two forwards to not reach the 15 goals plateau as well.

So what we're all saying is that anyone on either team can score...

    Well, good.

  16. For those who care (GGM), I can't seem to fully get on the chat... Oh, well

Nice game so far, although the Leaf seemed to pick up their game towards the end of the second...

Yes, I am talking to myself in chat. But you see, that's ok!

I am (understandably) the only one that cares what I have to say.

As for the game, I think the penalty Briere took with 3.7 seconds left in the 2nd was a very un-captainlike thing to do.
