This is a take I would expect from you.  Should he removed from the Hockey HoF and the Buffalo Sports HoF based on your insider information?

If only we had the internet to police Jim Kelley.

    Troll on.

that is what the writers did back then. That is why their Inside Hockey columns were so similar. We just did not know better due to lack of info. No way to read all the papers. He was elected by his friends to HOF so that is not a great thing to point out. No criteria other than longevity. Buffalo Sports HOF. LOL who cares.

I love the internal inconsistency in your post:  "Thompson needs to go to wing" but "Mitts trade is one of the few no doubt great moves", like trading a center and moving another center to wing is going to improve anything.

    You're funny.

    Or trolling.  Probably trolling.

lol, both can be true. Byrum is a far better player than mitts. Especially in todays NHL. Thompson is not a good center. We need real centers not what we have today.

Thinking can be hard. I have faith in you!!!!

I would have fired him by now, but I also would not have had him operate with such heavy restrictions either.

I think the Covid restrictions cost us Reinhart, Montour and Ullmark.  I think Risto needed to go, and Eichel wanted out with his injury the key to accommodate that.

Pegula's goal is to sell the team. he wants out. All his behavior backs that up. Reinart did not want to be here and was a piss poor teammate. Montour was a much better player than he showed here due to Ralph's system of not letting dman join or lead the rush. Ullmark is average goalie. He was on great teams. He is not number one on Boston and the fact he was replaced in playoffs series bears that out.

    No he's not.

LOL, ask 32 gms and they will all pick Byrum. Ask any scout. This made my day. too funny. A 3rdish line center or a very good right now and potentially dominant dman?

  3. No place for ryan johnson now or in near future. Samuelson needs his minutes reduced. He is not someone you want on ice for 25 minutes due to lack of offense. Power has a big year ahead of him. Needs to show growth in all aspects next year. Too many d zone lapses and his lack of any aggression is a real problem. Signing him that early to a big contract was dumb then and dumb now. Our top 2 d are Dahlin and Byrum. They can play together sometimes and apart depending on situation. Other teams will need to prepare for both.

Interesting how dman are most important in todays game. Used to be load up on forwards and you can get away with one good dman and these grinder types. Todays nhl need dman to jump up in play.

In ideal world we trade johnson, Joker for help on forward and get back or sign some more rugged types for PK and general nastiness. Would be a huge win if Dahlin did not have to be on first PK every time. Reduce his minutes a bit and let him kill second half so he can save energy for offense.

We were easiest team to play against in league last year. Will not make playoffs without fixing that.

I am with you.  Lance is a buttercup.  I get almost nothing from his writings because he is just a cheerleader.

Jim Kelley of the Buffalo News (aka Buffalo Evening News) is the level I want.   I know that is asking a lot, and why would a Sabres fan do that?

I could be on a business trip in LA, Chicago, Boston, or St Louis and read what Kelley wrote because their local hockey writers referenced him for insider information.   Jim Kelly was the one of the most respected Hockey Writer's of his time. A three time president of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, highly decorated as a Hockey Journalist, and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.  This is the level we once had, and what we should be expecting.

We Buffalo Hockey fans, including our fans in Southern Ontario and all over, are getting the shaft.  Not only for the lousy team play for the past 15 years, but the team coverage, the home game experience, and the acceptance of mediocrity that has become this once proud franchise.

With RJ gone there is nothing left that connects us to the better days.   Now it is all on Ruff to turn this thing around.

Jim Kelley was famous for making up trade rumors. He would call another writer in another town and they would be each others "sources." Players and execs hated him for that. Those rumors were hurtful to players and their families. No internet meant no one could call BS on him. Kelley would be a jerry Sullivan level hack today as he would have no information that we would not already have on internet or through Elliotte Friedmans of the world.

My point was the Mitts trade was dumb.  We really didn't need another high-talent, pretty-boy Dman (regardless of handedness) at the expense of a solid 2/3 C.  But Adams decided to invest in Tage and Cozens and walk away from Mitts.  I don't understand that.  I just don't.

The gap created by trading Casey away is greater than any contribution Byram will make, imo.

Mitts trade is one of few no doubt great moves by Adams. We were lucky Colorado was so desperate for a center. As of today we do not have a top center on Sabres. Thompson needs to go to wing.

    Why?

and what makes him one of our top centers?

Thompson is an awful center. Terrible at draws, cannot match up with other top centers with his speed, make up for it with being physical or being a very smart player. Defensively, he is really bad. Part of that is having to play with Skinner, but he loses his man and battles in our zone consistently. Been in league far too long for that to keep happening.

On the sabres, DC is our only chance at a top 2 center. Verdict is still  out on him after the step back this year. Played better at end of year so there is some hope. Centre is such a hard position in the NHL today. Used to be defense was hardest but center is now.

Bennet is better as a center than any sabre on team today.

I don’t want Cirelli, or any 3C, at $6.25M for 7 years.   We need a veteran 3 C for 3 years max, by then at least one of Krebs, Östlund, Savoie, Kulich, or Rosen better be ready.

I prefer Monahan or Stephenson/Karlsson  for less money and less term.

    Rosen is winger only.

OF that group only Östlund and Krebs have a chance at center in NHL Savoie could be a good winger in middle six. Kulich is kind of an enigma. Was way overhyped in first year. Being unable to crack the terrible lineup in buffalo while Benson did was telling. His ceiling is a middle sixish guy probably on the wing.

  8. a trade for bennet from Florida would be ideal. Hopefully Florida will need to clear some salaries to resign Reinhart. He has one year left. He would be one of our top centers right away. Move Thompson off center and it makes top 6 deeper. Krebs needs to be given a chance at some point to be the third center. When he played up in lineup, it was so brief we never saw what he really is.

And the number one goal of offseason is to buy out skinner. if we don't, not sure anything else matters...

  9. Appert has never won anything. 11 years at RPI with 18 full scholarships with big budget and big fan base and won nothing. Rochester won nothing. This lines up with the Ruff two year contract. Spend no money per Pegula orders and Adams keeping control by having no threats to him in organization.

I don’t think it is a slam dunk that our core is the right core.  Legit concerns regarding Thompson and Cozens as your 1-2 center punch.

I’m not really concerned about the defense.

Thompson is not a center. should be on wing. two years now of watching him as a center with no improvement.

No, the leap is in the current situation affecting past decisions when there was no way to know the current situation.

If something gives, I kind of hope it's not moving Ryan Johnson.  I think he will be a steady defender for quite a while.  Because he's played a full college career, he's really a mature prospect ready for big NHL minutes.

good grief. reading comprehension. Was not implying time travel solution.

There is nothing in his play that implies he will ever be ready for big nhl minutes. He has no above average tools and is below average in physical play and aggression. Bryson type guy.

  12. Should have spent year in Rochester. Nothing was shown by him in his callup to think he will be anything but league average defenseman. As we have Dahlin, Byrum and Power, there is no room for a non physical average defender. We need aggression and defense from the other three defenders.

Still wish we would have taken draft pick instead of signing him. He does nothing above average and is deficient as defensive player and lacks physicality.

I keep thinking guys Benson's size can't hold up in the NHL.  But I just realized Benson (5' 10") is taller than Marchand (5' 9")!

I hate Marchand but I'd love him if he was on the Sabres.  He's a pest like Kaleta but has much better skills.  And other teams just hate playing against him, and they throw their defensive plans out the window to try to stop him.  (I watched the Bruins-Leafs game last night, and Marchand was simply the best player on the ice, better than any of the Leafs.  Geez I hate typing that...)

Anyway if someone can convince Benson to find and channel his inner Marchand, that would be great.

comparison with Marchand are tenious except for size. He is not nearly the skater MArchand is. we can hope but....

Might want to review all the game videos because Benson won far more puck battles than he lost this season. He knows how to leverage his stature against bigger opponents and he did that routinely along the boards, the few times he was knocked on his butt notwithstanding.

And the ones he lost were not for lack of compete which is awesome. He is tenacious on the puck.

  15. I think Benson is a middle six guy for ceiling with best case being second line. His skating is what keeps him from being top line guy. He is a tenacious forechecker that will only get better as he get more years in. Great awareness for a young player. Definately plays how the team should play vs how they play now. Works hard every shift. His weaknesses, outside of skating seem to be experienced/coaching based. Where to be in own zone. Backchecking to wrong place. Being 18 and playing against men lol.

    Excited to watch him develop.

When we rank guys on potential it is not where they fit in on Sabres. The best players in the league are the top line guys. Mcdavid, Mathews, Crosby, Mackinon, Panarin, Barkov, Kucherov, Point etc... His potential of being a second line guy is great. Especially at number 13 pick

Sabres have exactly one top player like that on the team in Dahlin.

Sorry if this is stream of consciousness, but I stayed up hours past bed time to watch bills trade back. Woke my wife up with a maniacal laugh when I saw we traded out of 32....

Why would you hear this? Who is the person who’s going to divulge this to the media? Kyle? The player he’s talking to?

IT always filters out that so and sao was approached by a team leader. Either because other players are happy it happened or the player who was approached complains about it.

Availability is this kid’s downfall. I would not oppose packaging him with a draft pick  for an established, reliable player or two. Find a deal Kev.

I do wonder how much was coaching. HE needs a ton of coaching to meet his potential

The Sabres value increased 5X since Terry bought them.

if they stay in buffalo, there is no way they have appreciated that much. Market is too small... If sold for a higher multiple it is to move them and avoid the franchise fee. They are not worth close to a billion in our market.

Pittsburgh sold for 900 million, and a good chunk of that was the real estate around the new and old rinks. Fenway group was going to walk away without that included.

My issue with all of these, they are focused on Granato. "We didn't play well enough for Granato to keep his job. Donny would still be here if we were better" and that isn't the f-ing point. The Sabres missed the playoffs, again. They weren't good enough to make it to the playoffs again. Donny is collateral damage and the fact the players only could focus on that shows their lack of maturity IMPO. That coupled with the idea they all seem to have assumed Granato would just be back next year is interesting.

Only other thing I will say is there was clearly a team meeting of some kind after Granato was let go in which "it is on us" "gotta practice the right way" and "next head coach needs experience" were the talking points because they all spewed the same thing. I am not saying they don't necessarily think or believe it but it was a little too uniform.

They should have made the playoffs. Poor coaching account for more than the difference in us missing out. If we had an average power play we would have made playoffs. Never won 4 games in a row. Woefully unprepared most nights. Each night in NHL you prepare for your opponent. What matchups will work and which will not. What to Watch for in their breakout, in your d zone etc...  We were not doing that. If you watched closely at home, granato would not utilize last change. He would change at same time or before the other team. Idiocy. At least make it seem like you are concerned with other team and matchups.

Other teams were prepared for us. Forecheck hard because as soon as d gets possession sabres forwards leave the zone. pressure d into bad pass and watch for d to d behind the net. If you are carrying puck from neutral zone hold it as any backchecking is occurring they go to wrong player and the D will back up into the goalie before they will step up.

Other teams easily pushed us around and when that happened team disappeared. There was one game I think against Pittsburgh where we started off great and had a lead. Pittsburgh started getting involved after whistle and pushing sabres around. Game was over then. We wilted.

Can we please put to bed the idea Okposo was some great leader? He has barely seen the playoffs in his career. He was a mediocre player his entire run in buffalo. You never heard anything about him taking players aside and letting them know play was unacceptable.

And I'm not saying he's the next captain or anything.  I just thought what he said was interesting.

I mean everyone's busting on the team because other players said they need to be pushed harder.  Now Muel says, no, we need to do it for ourselves and when I post it I get panned for it.

Some days you just can't win.
