    “Nobody has the answer”.

I don’t think that’s true.  There are plenty of answers, but we have a meddling owner, an incompetent GM, and the wrong players to implement the necessary change.

Answer 1:  Terry Pegula needs to take a step back if he doesn’t sell the team.

Answer 2:  The step back needs to occur after Adams is relieved of his duties.  He needs to be replaced by an experienced President of hockey ops and a new GM.  The new GM will decide on coaches.  I’d fire everyone but Lindy and let Lindy and GM work together on a new staff.  I’m not saying Lindy’s been great or even good, but he does know his to win and what it takes to win.  I’m not sure another head coaching change helps at this point and we need to see what Lindy can do with his coaches.

Answer 3:  Start the process of revamping the roster under the new GM.  Cozens, Power and Samuelson should be at the top of the transition list.  Also all UFAs except Zucker and Greenaay should be allowed to walk.

Answer 4:  Fix the roster with veteran players with the skill sets needed such as defensemen who can play defense and centers who can create offense.

I fully acknowledge that none of this is easy, but there is a way forward but not if Adams remains as GM and Terry is involved in the day to day manage of the club.  Go drill a well Terry.

Not saying the situation is the same, but look at Winnipeg this season.  With competency, you can turn this around in a year or two.

  2. I recall in his presser Adams complained that he didn't have a Josh Allen.  If I recall, Allen wasn't a number 1 pick, but he went in the top 10.  Kevin probably wouldn't have picked him (it takes real scouting and investment of time and resources).  He currently has two numbers ones on the team (Dahlin and Power) and look what good this does -- it does not make Buffalo a palm tree destination.

In my view, Granato was done dirty.  He coached a less talented and less experienced team to within a point of the playoffs. Last year they reverted to closer to their talent level. That wasn’t on Granato, that was on the GM for not having g the courage to step up and bring in players who could help us take the next step. Not saying Granato was perfect, but he squeezed a lot more out of less than Ruff currently is.

Its not Granato or Ruff.  Its Mr Palm Tree and the whole talent evaluation staff.  Time to clean house again.

  4. If the team is sold say goodbye to a team in Buffalo.  There are too many big market teams who would love a franchise.

The best solution is pressure on Pegula to improve the team management and structure.

I don’t think I’ve ever been this mad over a game before. I was stunned leaving the arena and by the time I finished my own game, I told myself after Thursday I’d be done for the season. Then today I woke up and my first thought was ***** this team.

I said before the season what a joke it was that this team has 5 captains. These guys are all babies being led by babies. I’m so tired of poo-poo Alex Tuch all the time. Power can go. Cozens can go. Tuch can go. Dahlin can go. Quinn can go. Get rid of them all. Bring in heart. give one letter out stapled to Zucker’s chest. The Bills win despite injuries because they play like a team full of hungry dogs ready to feast.

Fire Adams. Bring someone in from outside the organization to come in and speak very directly the the fans, the team, and the organization that the culture of losing is not acceptable and the blame for 13+ years falls squarely on the shoulders of everyone who has been employed wearing the logo since the drought started. Let him fire Ruff to show this mediocre BS isn’t acceptable. Bring in Gallant. Clean the ***** house.

The Bills have real leaders and a coach that demands accountability.  They have a smart GM who knows what his team needs and is ready when the need calls (ie Amari Cooper).   The Bills don't ever give up and always plays for Josh.  Shakir said he would go through a brick wall for Josh.  Who on the Sabres would do or say this?  This is a pathetic bunch if kids -- yes, they look like kids, who are easily flustered and have no chip on their shoulder.  The owner needs to do something.

  6. What struck me about the Islanders game is not that the Islanders are a particularly good team, but how much more physically imposing they look than the Sabres.  When I look at Brock Nelson or Anders Lee, they look so much bigger than their Sabres counterparts.  We still look like we have alot of kids out there.  Now these kids will mature and fill out more, but unfortunately that means we will have to wait and maybe then it will be too late.

IMHO there is a big reason WHY the team is in what could end up year 14 of a playoff drought.  (With the exception of the current GM's tenure) ever since Pegula has owned the team, he has changed directions within 3 seasons and hired guys that have a significantly different plan for how to build a team and none of them are complementary to what the previous guy was doing so each new GM ends up effectively starting from scratch vs what the previous guy was building.

Pegula started out big on bringing in FA's to supplement what was already here but abandoned that almost immediately for a scorched earth multiyear tank and rebuild.  Regier accumulated a ton of prospects and picks and also iced one of the worst teams in NHL history in doing so.  Murray was brought in to complete the tank and then accelerate the rebuild.  He wanted to follow the LA Kings model with a big hard forechecking squad.

He was out after Bylsma's 2nd season was a step back.  Botterill was brought in to change the direction (and winning the Dahlin lottery gave him the cover (or whatever you want to call it) to move on from O'Reilly) and he wanted more of a speed team.  He fell out of favor and was replaced by Adams who started out trying (half-heartedly?) to build around the original tank fruit but when that season blew up in the revenue-restricted COVID season, he was given the go ahead to go back to more of Regier's vision for the original tank - rebuild with skilled youth.

This team's issue, again IMHO, ISN'T Skill vs Grit, it is they're still the youngest team in the league; that will necessarily bring growing pains with it.  Are the kids, who are still young but experienced for their youth having been brought up to the NHL a season or 2 (or 3) years earlier than most franchises would've brought them up, experienced enough to overcome their youth now that (except on the PP particularly and on entries in general) they have an experienced coach with actual NHL caliber plans directing them?  The jury is still out as they continue to flirt with being just out, then just in, then just out, then just in a playoff position again and so on and so forth.  They seem to be learning how to play the way Ruff wants them to play and also seem to be getting NHL goaltending reasonably consistently for the 1st time since Miller was traded.  (Ullmark's brief flashes weren't nearly often enough as he was out of the lineup too often.)  But they are also still very young and have issues getting the puck to the net against heavy teams.

Desperately want to see them make the playoffs this year; in large part because do not want to see them blow it up AGAIN and move into a different direction right when (some of) the kids are actually getting close to not being kids anymore.  Honestly suspect they won't blow the team up if they miss but are close; but even if that's the case, am REALLY sick of not getting to watch OUR team play beyond tax day.  AND, if they miss and don't blow it up, there is NO guarantee that NEXT YEAR would finally be the charm.  Either way, this perpetual Ground Hog's Day we've lived through for well over a dozen year needs to friggin' end.

Still want to see a true top 4 defensive D-man brought in (the kind Samuelsson was SUPPOSED to be and Granato for no apparent reason believed Jokiharju was/is).  IF they make that move, then 1 more F for the top 6 would be the next item on the list.  The acquisition of McLeod shows that Adams doesn't have to destroy the pipeline to bring in a guy that can help today AND in the future.  And their need to run Kulich at all of 20 (21?) yo as the 3C highlights that the team needs to make 1 more move up front, preferrably right after making that move for the 4th top 4 D-man.

Good post.  Right before Beane an McDermott, the Bills went through a version of this.  Was the hiring of McDermott and Beane pure luck or was Kim a more positive influence then (unfortunately that no longer currently applies).  I know there are people above Adams in the organization and maybe they will take a more active part.  To me, this year's team is better than last years, but they are still adjusting to a new system and still have very young players.  The coaching improvement is definite, but he has to have them unlearn alot of bad habits encouraged by Granato.  I guess time will tell.

  8. Terry must enjoy the success of the Bills.  Given this, how can he tolerate what's happening with the Sabres.  The money situation can't be the issue since he would make more money with a winning team.  Does he really think Adams can turn this around or is it he just wants to believe this.  I live through years of this with the Bills, but finally they got lucky.  Do you think the Sabres will ever get lucky?

True, but Ralph was in his late 90's when this happened.  Terry has all his faculties, he just doesn't know were to turn.

True, but it seems that a person of his means would have no difficulty finding someone if he really wanted to.  I have worked at a number of large successful corporations and when there was motivation, there was never any problem finding a consultant or outside individual to assess and advise on a problem.  Terry just seems very stubborn and appears to have some vision of what he wants, but it is unrealistic given the way hockey is currently played (probably whey he liked Jeff Skinner).  The best chance we have is if either Lindy (who probably carries some weight) or his kids, who probably have some interest in the business) can talk some sense into him.  Adams is just a yes man who is clueless as to how to run an organization.

And Florida’s GM Bill Zito could have been hired by Buffalo too.  But Terry would have to known him and trust him, which limits the pool of candidates to Howdy Doody and anyone his friends from Pittsburgh talk to him about.

This is shades of the Ralph Wilson syndrome.  He would only hire people he new.  You will never win with this philosophy.  Hoping his kids can talk some sense into him.

  11. I think with Quinn, the Achilles injury is still a big factor, whether it is psychological or physical.  I know some basketball players who've had achilles injuries have taken several years before they are back to normal.  You don't suddenly lose skill, but you do lose confidence.  Hoping he can get this back.

  12. Kevyn has to go.  He has no sense of urgency while the season may be slipping away.  I hope Lindy gets in his face and reads him the riot act.  He should learn from Brandon Beane -- when the Bills needed a speedy wide receiver they wasted no type in getting Amari Cooper.  This is pathetic.

  13. When Thompson is in the game, there is too much predictability -- too much deferral to him and his taking the same shot over and over again.  When he was out, players had to scramble more and there was less predictability in the lineup.

Yesterday was a mess.  They appeared to be having trouble handling the puck the entire game and getting out of their own endzone.  Too many long shots and almost no physical play.

This is on coaching and the players.  Show some pride.  Benson is 19 and acts more grown up than most of them.
