This is a difficult but inevitable discussion. I was all for the initial Adams blow it up and start over and prior to this season I would not have wanted another one. I did say last year though that we were in a very fragile culture building moment and it could fall apart easily. I think they blew it and broke it when they failed to make a free agency impact (or hockey trade(s)) and brought back Kyle as captain.

Now to be clear, it's not Kyle's fault. He actually does a lot of the right things despite his diminished talent and on a good team he'd be just fine, but he was not the right leader for this fragile young team. They blew it with ROR and they blew it here and I suspect they will blow it again.

There are multiple factors, but I think it's broken again and I think it's possible it does need to be blown up again. I do not think Pegula will make the right moves, but here is what I believe needs to be done.

    1. Fire Adams, Granato, and all the assistant coaches (you may need an interim to end the season so you can use Appert for that)

    2. Hire a hockey guy. A senior advisor. Listen to him.

    3. New GM, new coach. Let them evaluate attitude and desire and accountability and decide on the subtractions like Philly did.

    4. Bring in veteran leadership to surround the kids you keep.

    5. Tear out all the luxuries in the locker room. No ipads. No games. No between the stalls. No frills. No spas. You want it? You f'n earn it and then it'll come back and not before.

As I type this I realize there's a lot more numbers and this could go on and on so I'm going to stop cause I know it won't happen. We need a new culture of hard work every night and full accountability. If we do not get it, this nightmare will never end.

"5. Tear out all the luxuries in the locker room. No ipads. No games. No between the stalls. No frills. No spas. You want it? You f'n earn it and then it'll come back and not before."

If I had any artistic talent I would love to be able to draw a cartoon showing the Sabres locker room with a few players wearing fancy robes, getting massages and sipping champagne, and with one of the players saying "how does this get any better if we start winning?'

Take out all the toys and make this all about being accountable and winning.  You don't need a martinet to do this -- just someone who can sell his plan and push the right buttons.  This coaching staff can't do this.

Ok, some of my opinion on this:

    - Either Pegs needs to be an involved owner or we need a POHO. Someone needs to hold KA responsible. As of right now, now way either KA or Granato are feeling any heat from Pegs. That is not acceptable.

    - At the end of the season when KA does his end of the year meeting with Pegs, if he says anything towards "Another year will make this team better" he needs to be immediately fired. Status quo is not helping this team

    - Team is built wrong and we have plenty of capital to fix that. Anyone thinking the answer lies within, needs to be shown the door. What is on the Sabres is pretty much what's in the farm system with the exception of 1, 2 players.

    - A reactive leadership is a failed leadership. Staying reactive is saying that mediocrity is ok. If that's their true thinking i hope our attendance drops below 5K.

    - Coaches need to go. There is no reason for a team to sleep 50-55 mins of a game and only show up for small spurts. That team needs to be bag skated as soon as the fans leave the building until they all puke. The play is totally unacceptable. Also, coaching perimeter offensive and defensive play is totally bad hockey sense. When announcers and fans and everyone else sees that and comments but the own coaches do not, thats a monster issue.

This is not going to be anything close to an easy fix. We took a huge step back and most likely added 2 more years of non playoff hockey to this team.  even hardcore fans are going to turn away eventually. But sitting and doing nothing is just poor business decision and sense by all involved. A poor crappy ice product does not make money. Accountability needs to be held on all positions in the organization from Owner to the players as there is absolutely zero right now.

I was definitely a very hardcore Sabres fan, but 13 years has sapped even my love of the sport. Watching other teams play pisses me off more, wondering why we are so inept. This team has found a way to kill my love of hockey. Until there is accountability in the Sabres organization, i am done getting frustrated with this team. I cannot even support a tank as they will draft more useless players like all the rest instead of what's needed to move forward.

I am done.... rant and opinion over.

This is a good post.  You need a coach who demands accountability.  Watch a NY Knicks game. Watch what the coach does when the player does something stupid or doesn’t show enough effort.  Also watch how the point guard Jalen Brunson encourages other players when they make a dood play, yet gets in their faces when something isn’t right.  Haven’t seen this happen on this team.  No leadership and no accountability.  And this team  doesn’t pass the smell test.  Do they ever look like the dominant team.  Do they ever look like they know what they’re doing or are they always hesitant and floundering.  Enough said

  3. While another goalie would be nice, the most fundamental change needs to be management.  We will never win with this group.  I believe we have enough of a core of players that with better coaching and scouting, including a few needed veteran additions, this team would be a playoff contender.  We don't need any more draft picks -- we need a few decent select veteran players and real coaches.

  4. Hard for me to fathom how Pegula sees the devotion and love of Bills fans, but totally neglects the Sabres.  Say what you want about McDermott (he does have faults) but he and the GM have set a tradition of winning.  This is the polar opposite of the Sabres.  As they the say, the definition of insane is repeating the same things over and over again when they clearly don't work.  How can someone as successful as Pegula not see this!!  Hire a competent managerial structure (which he can certainly afford given that the Bills just hosted 2 playoff games) and make the Sabres a team that he can be proud of.  How can he be proud of this team!!

  5. I don't know if this has been mentioned but there was an article (either in the Buffalo News or Bleacher Report) where Dahlin has been trying to figure out what's wrong with the team and how he can help.  I believe he mentioned that the guys on defense have to commit to defense, even if this means less scoring on their part.  What surprised me about this is that Dahlin, who is not a coach, is try to take on the coaches job.  If so, its clear we don't have coaches.  I hope more players make comments like this and confront Adams with this reality.  I really think the most pressing need is a new coaching staff.  I think this group of players could be performing much better with a knowledgeable coaching staff.

For as much as Dolan has done well he has not had a Stanley cup winning team and he has been at it almost 30 years in a market with every advantage. Is he a good owner a bad owner, or an unlucky owner?

He is not cheap, which Pegula seems to be.  With hockey, he seems to be relatively hands off.  I would say that with the Rangers he has been generally good, but unlucky.  With the Knicks, he has, until recently, been a disaster.  When he hired Leo Rose and became more hands off, the team improved.  The team has actually been enjoyable to watch and hopefully, in the next few years, a true contender.

    Couple other things.

It's naive to say Terry bought the team bc he loved it or the sport. It's more likely there was a larger plan to establish pro sports bonafides in anticipation of Ralph's passing. "People think I'm a hockey guy. I'm a football guy."

I've thrown Terry a bone by saying maybe he's a good football guy. He has recruited in the sport. He was a power player at PSU who angled to get one of the assistants a head coaching job at Pitt.

Everything he's ever said about hockey has been monumentally dumb, then they took the mic away.

The Bandits are an argument for Terry as a historically bad hockey owner. Unless TaroT tells me Terry's been in on lax decisions, I will say the Bandits were either dumb luck or the owner hired smart people, gave them resources and stayed the hell away.

Kind of like Dolan with the Rangers.  He realized he knew nothing about hockey and hired great people.  When he meddled in basketball, the Knicks were a disaster.

They need to take a page from the Bills playbook and fire an assistant coach

sorry Matt Ellis, you may or may not deserve it but you must be sacrificed

I made this same point on the Buffalo Bills thread.  Look at the improvement in the Bills since they fired Dorsey.  If they don't want to fire Granato, identify the assistant coaches that are holding the team back and make changes immediately.

  9. I do care, but feel trapped by Pegula.  There is clearly talent on this team, though some key pieces are missing.  However, both the GM and Coach are way in over their heads, and don't see us getting out of this with the current regime.  What's weird is that Pegula has had some success with the Bills, so it should occur to him that you need to get the right people in place.  The players play without a scheme, have no accountability and no leadership.  And, the coaching staff appears incapable of coaching.  What will it take for Pegula to make a change?

I'm flying to NYC for an extended weekend. Seeing Sweeney Todd tomorrow night, got reservations at Dante in Manhattan for lunch. Gonna just unwind a little. I may check the score quick, but I have no interest to go out of my way to follow this team. I used to find a stream and try and watch.

Thanks Terry, keep up the good work.

I share your sentiments.  Will glance at the score, but will not watch the games until I see something worth watching.  Still hopeful about the Bills and am happy the Yankees got Juan Soto -- maybe they will have a decent year.  I fear we are in hockey purgatory, without a white knight (although we have Don Granato and his crew of headless horsemen)

Terry is not interested in winning a championship win either team.  We wants PSE to have “sustained” profits, and teams that are “stable” with a bunch of nice culture guys.

This feels so surprising since Terry supposedly loves hockey and gave money to Penn State for their hockey program.  For someone who has been so successful in life, hard to imagine he wants to just settle for mediocrity.

  12. They need to fire Granato immediately and find an interim replacement.  The season is lost anyway so try to find someone who at the least has a plan.  And enough of only wanting players who want to be here.  Players want to win and make a fair salary.  Culture I'm sure is way down on their list.  That way of thinking is just stupid and has to change.  And, in order to get players of value you need to give up valued prospects -- see Baseball as a model example of this.  If Adams can't do this he needs to go too.  The clock is ticking on the entire franchise.

  13. What's maddening about this coaching staff is their inability to adjust or correct mistakes.

Fix the face-off and power play problem

Work with the team to emphasize clearing the puck out of the zone.

Keep taking shots and put men in front of the goalie

Sit players who are not helping the team.
