Pardon me if I'm cutting in: Anyone care to share a take on where Power is in terms of development and/or how he projects as an NHLer?

I've mostly stopped paying attention to how the team and players perform. But given that they've committed to the guy long-term, I am curious to get perspectives on where he's at, where he may be headed.

For my part, he generally makes me say meh.

I think he needs to make some changes. He’s got to get in better condition and be able to skate faster and be stronger with his body overall. He’s too thin and too weak and too slow and not quality enough skater at this point in time, IMO.

A better head coach and defense coach would help.

The only thing that will help this team “now” is dumping the coach. He’s made enough money for accomplishing nothing already. He should feel bad for taking the money. Be that as it may, looking for players now is ridiculous. They aren’t going to the playoffs and should be hiring a new coach next year. Then let that coach decide what he wants to do with the talent. Last thing we need at this point of this lost season is to trade away young talent for a loaner. Unless it’s a 25 year old we are going to sign for 5-7 years.

It’s not that they can’t afford the players(fit under cap whatever), it appears they are choosing not to.  If this report is to be believed.  I’m leery of Adams understanding of how to work the cap at all tho.

You are judging Tage based on his on ice celebrations with teammates?

Not judging. Questioning. But not just that, it was given as an example of a general, non enthusiastic demeanor I see this year.

The #'s are a bit misleading though. Benson may lead in the % of his shots that are from the 5-7 foot tough area, but if you apply the %'s from the data you highlight, he is 6th on the team in the number of shots from the 5-7 foot tough area.  The top 6 are:

    Skinner 46

    Cozens 36

    Peterka 34

    Tuch 33

    Thompson 32

    Benson 29

I appreciate the OP and the links. But this is a better measure because Benson doesn’t get off a ton of shots.

These stats are such a low number they don’t paint a statistically valid picture of who is going to the net. Benson doesn’t shoot from far out which is wise because when you look at his shot speed (and his skating speed) both are incredibly slow.

It’s hard not to like Benson because of the way he plays with such excellent intangibles for a rookie. But I have to wonder if he will become a great player with such a slow skate speed and shot. Especially as small as he is. With a shot that slow he shouldn’t shoot outside of 7 feet. 😉

It will be interesting to see if he can improve that very much. But I suspect those variables are why he fell in the draft. kid desperately needs to get stronger. A player can get away with a weaker shot speed if it’s hyper accurate and if he skates fast. Or vice versa. Or has size and is physical. Tough to overcome none of those.

We need team speed. We play a very slow game. And we have a lot of slow players. Just put on one of our games side by side compared to a team like the Oilers. You’ll find yourself saying, “Oh, so that’s the speed an NHL game is supposed to look like.” Speed isn’t everything; a great scheme, defensive system can overcome. But we don’t have any of that.

I'd also consider trading TNT before Mitts.  This sounds counterintuitive at first since TNT is kind of a unicorn.  He's big, skates well, has a wicked shot, and can stick-handle in a phone booth.  However, he still isn't a good two-way player.  To me, he is just a bigger better version of VO.

I believe TNT's scoring is replaceable.  When I look at the Sabres, I see plenty of other goal scorers.  Quinn, Cozens, JJP, Skinner, and Tuch all can or have scored 30+ in the NHL.  Kulich is also a goal-scorer.  How many other playmakers and two-way forwards do we have other than Mitts? Benson? Maybe, but he is only 18, and years from his full potential.  Östlund? Probably, but we have no idea when he'll arrive in Buffalo (if ever).

I also think TNT would garner a higher return than Mitts given his 90+ point season and reasonable contract.

PS: This trade deadline may be the best opportunity to move Skinner and most of his contract.  He is still scoring at a good pace.  Teams need scoring in the playoffs.  The cap jumps next year giving teams the ability to afford his deal beyond this season and Skinner might be willing to waive him NMC to go to a playoff team after missing the playoffs all 13+ years of his career.

It really is a tough trade situation given how bad the entire team has been this year. Every skater has regressed except Casey & JJP.

Age wise, Skinner is the most obvious trade commodity. But not sure what we’d get with his contract and one way talent.

That said, I understand the consideration on trading Mitts as they may think he will garner the most value because teams won’t have to take on a huge contract. He’s playing well. And we may not want to pay him moving forward.

Tage might get value. Talent wise he’s the best offensive talent. But he is an enigma. Super talented but often lacks energy and doesn’t play with passion. He seems very blasé when we score and he is on ice. Everyone else is smiling, excited, and he is almost, “okay, gotta do the obligatory group hug.” He would probably blow up if he went to a winning franchise with strong leadership.

It all depends on what we get back. Would we get a strong player with years to go on a deal who would actually make us better?

But I don’t agree on the “plenty of other goal scorers.” I think it’s just the opposite. JJP, Tage, & Skinner are the only ones I would put in that category.

Quinn has had two major injuries, so while I am hopeful, I am not sure what we will have in him.

Cozens? He didn’t score much 2 years ago. Okay, he was just getting his feet wet. Got 31 last year but was that an anomaly or the norm and this year is the anomaly? He doesn’t have a big shot or an accurate shot. His shots are often right at the goalie.  Like most of the other players on the team.

In 7 seasons, Tuch scored more than 20 once - last season. Granted he had some injuries - but that seems to be the norm. He’s on a 22 goal pace this year factoring in the game pace for the Sabres as a whole. Even if he played the rest of the way without injury, he’s on pace to get 24 this season. I’d say he’s a mid-level scorer. You need those guys. But he’s not a 40 goal talent. He

Now if we had 10-12 guys scoring 15-35 goals (like the Lightning had for their run) and played reasonable defense that would be fine. But they also had 4 special offensive talents (Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, & Hedman - who is a beast); and a great goalie.

Kulich is a sniper. But he has hit a wall (though he did well in the WJC). 0 goals in his last 10 games for the Amerks. He may be 2 years away from even being a full time NHL player, could be 3+ years from starting to show his peak NHL talent.

On the other hand, we have a lot of guys who are not really scorers: Mitts, Benson, Greenway, Cozens (? Jury out, imo), Krebs, Robinson … and the rest are dogs you just don’t want to see on the team much longer, imo (KO, Girgs, VO).

Last year, it looked like this team was starting to build an identity as a high scoring unit. Now, they have no identity and a questionable future.

I think it depends on what kind of identity you want the team to have. But I don’t think Adams has a clue nor especially Granato. He needs to be gone yesterday. That’s the real issue.

I think Casey is who he will be right now. Which is good to see but this seems his peak talent level, imo. Perhaps he could get 80 points if he has good scoring talent on each wing.

Whomever we trade, we will need a coach and a talented vet or two who can be real leaders (we have none among the forwards right now, imo) and light a fire under the young guys. If we can get a coach and a couple of veterans who light a fire under Tage and some of the other young talents, the upside for them is very high, imo. If Tage got stronger and super motivated with good coaching, he’s a 45-50 goal scoring talent the next 4+ yrs, imo.

We need a coach who has some respectability, will sit down with each of these guys ask them if they want to be great or not, and lay out a vision and plan for each of them (especially physical development) and as a team. We don’t have that.

People call Granato a developmental coach but I don’t think he’s any of that;  he’s just not a good coach period, imo. He's just a nice guy.

  6. Just watch the Edmonton Oilers and a few other teams.

This Sabres team is soft and slow as ****. The Oilers, while far from the best team in hockey, are super fast and aggressive. They are constantly on the move, flying on the ice. Aggressive. Strong with the puck.

The Sabres need to get physically stronger and develop more endurance. And then need a coach that gets them to play with intensity. Instead we are weak physically, do not skate well or aggressive or fast. Puck handling is junior level. That’s just the start. But it would go a long way.

Power is a mess right now.

True. Guy is playing funky, light yrs worse than last year.

He desperately needs 15 lbs of muscle, more leg power, and skating lessons! Should be close to or above 230 (with no additional fat) next year if he is committed. Should have been 220+ this year.

Who are the d*** trainers on this team?

Do they even have a weight room?

Or does Granato just tell them to “skate a bit in the off season, please?”

Compared to the snipers in the All-Star games, our shooters are awful… Girgensons shoots over the net at an open corner from 15 feet in the slot… No poise.

That’s the challenge. We have Skinner, JJP, and Tage as the only snipers (and Tage is having a down year).

We have several good players but they aren’t sharp shooting goal scorers.

I really would like to see Kulich added to the Casey-Greenway line now or near the end of the year - last 15-20 games - Instead of Okposo.

The 'skating issues' is a holdover from his scouting report pre-draft (2022) that said he was "slow" and clearly written by someone who spent five minutes watching tape from one game and didn't do even basic research.

As I said in one of the many prospect threads during the off-season, the KHL tracks on-ice skating speed. Novikov was the fastest defenseman on the ice for either team (both top speed and average speed) for the majority of games he played in during the 2022-2023 season. In multiple games, he was straight-up the fastest skater on the ice for either team (top speed, not average). He was the only defenseman to repeat achieving the top game speed across the entire KHL for the full season as far as I could tell. That's wild.

It's also worth noting that you can't maintain a high average speed if you don't know how to be agile and use your curves as well. It's one thing if he was always the fastest skater, but it's another entirely to average as the highest skater (note: the average is among D-men only--he never had the highest average speed in any game but neither did any defenseman in any game as far as I could tell and that makes some sense). The margins for being an outlier on speed isn't enough that posting the fastest speed is going to just automatically raise your average to the highest as well. You need to continue moving and keep your momentum in order to do that.

I don't think his speed has been utilized as effectively in Rochester so this misguided perception continues to exist. He hasn't joined the rush as often as he did in the KHL or during prospect challenge/camp. It's not to say he isn't willing to join, but he tends to side more defensively in play. I think this is by design from the coaches who are more focused on positioning with him than maybe other defensemen on the team. Likely because of his status as an NA rookie.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that he's openly talked about how difficult the move to Rochester has been for him and his wife. We sometimes forget these are 20 year old kids moving 5,000 miles away from family and friends to a place with a completely different culture and language. Seth Appert talked about it as well and said that Novikov and his wife had a bit of a culture shock, but they're adjusting well now.

Good stuff. No idea how ready he is to handle the NHL in any sort of reasonable way for a 20 year old.

But in a general sense, I think at this point we need to subtly tank the season and play younger players for any injured vets.

Time to start looking at who the top 10 are in the draft and sort by 'highly skilled undersized perimeter forward' so we can figure out who we're drafting.

At some point, when it’s clear this team isn’t going anywhere and don’t go on a 10-12 game winning streak to get them back in the hunt, we ought to bring up young guys, get them some action, rest any injured player, lose a few games, and get in a better draft position.

And fire Granato, then overpay for a legitimate NHL coach. Not a guy who belongs in the juniors.

I didn't know about the NHL edge site, I stumbled upon it today.

Lot of tracking data, I thought the Sabres were always one of the faster teams in the league, but not even close.

They track individual players, teams, Top speed attained skating by forwards, by defensemen, and the total number of 'burts' each player/team has had over 18mph, over 20mph, and over 22mph.

What does the data show? Sabres are, or at least they play VERY slow.

Only 14 times all year have they had a player with over a 22mph speed (70% less than leage AVERAGE) . 716 times over 20 (23% less than average) .  3982 over 18mph (5.5% below league average)

I didn't go through every team, but in the first chart below, the closer you are to the outer edge of the circle, the higher you rank compared to other teams, the closer you are to the center, the closer you are to worst in the league.

Here is the link to the Sabres page on the site:  https://edge.nhl.com/en/team/BUF

This is great stuff. And I agree. We don’t have super fast skaters. As the old adage goes, speed kills. We really do need to add speed to the lineup. Drafting speed at this point is not a fix given how long it takes for a prospect to develop and get to the NHL level, let alone whether he will pan out.

And in conjunction with that, we need better skaters. Losing Quinn all this year hurts to some degree.

But with respect to our recent draft choices, both Benson and Power need to learn to skate better and improve their speed significantly. Power is not a great skater nor that fast - but for his size he should be able to make up ground. We should have in place a strong skating development coach and program. But, of course, Pegula has no ingenuity in that regard.

  12. VO is an obvious trade but who will give us anything for him?

I see a lot of desire to trade Skinner, but I think that’s a mistake. How many pure goal scorers / shooters do we have? Skinner.  JJP. Tage, when he has his head on. Tuch is pretty good. Not a sniper. But the others are not really shooters or pure scorers. None of Mitts, Cozens, Greenway, or Benson have any kind of shot. Quinn is a good player and has potential. We don’t need them all to be in that category but I don’t see us getting goals with any consistency line to line if we trade away our shooters/scorers.

  13. With the Quinn injury, I think the Sabres need to target next year, as opposed to trading away assets for short term benefits for this season. Barring a 10 game win streak, I don’t see it. But I would give up vets not in long term plans. But not for draft picks. We need some talent close to emerging at the NHL level.

  14. Greenway was excellent. He played the way I hoped he would end we traded for him and the way you expect a 6’6 225 lb player to play. Though all these 6’5 plus players should be going in the 230-240 range.

But if he would play that way every game we’d be a much better team.

As with others, hope Quinn is not serious. Definitely need him. That is a line for the future with 22/24/77.

I like the 12/37/89 line as well. If we can find a good forward in free agency or trade this off season to go with Tage and Skinner that’s 3 good lines.

  15. Two dumb turnovers was a major factor. But not enough chances. It’s crazy how few goals we have scored compared to last season.

I think Granato just thinks he can throw the puck out there and tell the players, “grind. Work hard.”

We need a new coach for sure. But this also is not a defensive minded team. And we could use more shooters. Benson is going to have to gain some serious strength in his legs and arms to get some kind of shot (as well as increased speed). It’s weak relative to the NHL level.

But still, we just seem to fly around and behave no system. On defense or attack.

  16. 4 hours ago, PerreaultForever said:

I wouldn't trade Greenway because, although he does not play to his size or tough enough for what I want on our bottom 6, he does bring elements that are sorely lacking in many of our offensively leaning forwards. Like his PK ability.

This expresses exactly my thoughts on him. And what benefit would we get in return? Wish he were more physical and intimidating with his size but his PK play has been exceptional. That’s probably one reason teams have an interest. But we don’t need more draft picks. We need players ready to go now and the next 2-3 seasons.

Though an empty netter, that was a really fine goal by Cozens. Got the puck, went by two different players with two nifty moves, off the board and then a nice cut to the left to clear his path.

He was not good tonight, no argument on that.

Should we go back to the old "can he drive a line?" argument. Tage doesn't.

I would say Mitts actually does "drive his line". Cozens does SOMETIMES, and Tuch does now and again but not consistently. The rest not so much.

Benson might one day but he's hit the rookie wall, which is what everybody but the Sabres management would realize was only a matter of time. He should be in and out of the line up and be more situational BUT they have nobody to replace him who is any good so he gets to be the next free range rookie on the team.

Question: Does ANYBODY coach the D at all? Because either Power doesn't listen or nobody is teaching him anything.

No one coaches the D. That’s your answer.

But the biggest culprit on S tonight was Jokiharu. He should be in Rochester, frankly. If we are to be a playoff contender. Two goals can be directly attributable to his boneheadedness.

And Benson is not NHL ready. He has good instincts, but he’s not fast enough, or physical enough, nor does he have a big shot, to be a strongly competitive player yet. Hockey sense and compete are there. But he is a ways away from being a stellar player on a top team.

    True.

It would be nice if he had to face some hard questions from media though. The NHL should force GMs to answer questions every couple of weeks. At least then there could be some public pressure on them as there would be more scrutiny on him.

Even something as simple as “Do you think you’ve constructed a winning franchise? What do you think the problem is? Did you miscalculate the talent level?” Or, “Don’t you think it would be better for Levi to be in Rochester, for his development and confidence?” And let him face questions twice a month. Instead of being able to hide under his desk.
