  1. They have the blimp drop and the free pizza for your row and Sabretooth throwing t-shirts once a game....and the 2nd intermission Rinko (Plinko look-a-like)....and... *sad trombone*

Yeah the fan experience could be better. I was there for the home opener, the t-shirts were nice but the atmosphere quickly died. Yes we sucked that day but the comment the other day along the lines of "buzzing so loud I might have to use the bathroom" about the Vegas arena made me think; I haven't heard of a Sabres or Amerks atmosphere that hyped since well probably since the Aud closed in '96 (I might concede the post-lockout years, but still that's over a decade).

The only concessions thing I noticed was every time someone wanted to pay with a cellphone tap (Like Apple or Samsung Pay) the line would grind to a halt. They needed to call a manager swipe a special card then scan the phone. The Pizza and General Concessions stands near section 314 were constantly 5-6 people deep and 15 minute wait. The bathrooms were moving quicker that day.

There's a difference between what's best to win *this current game* and other games down the road.  Larry is here, he's taking cap space.  He's been injured.  There's nothing wrong with HCPH playing him to see whether he will fit in with this year's team, and whether there is any chemistry there between Mitts and Tage.  It doesn't mean he'll be committing to Larsson over the long haul, it just means that it's early in the season and HCPH is doing some player evaluation.  Whether Larsson is part of the long term vision or not, you want to give him some minutes, if only to evaluate and showcase him for a possible trade.

I can't believe there's this much angst over the 12th forward.

It might have something to do with the fact that 70% of our top 12 was made up of "12th forwards" last few years.

First, here are our 8-most-used lines and their (score adjusted? edit - not score-adjusted) corsi percentages. Note that the lines we've stuck with more than double the time of any other have performed quite well.

    xgf.thumb.JPG.8095e8172503dad03b33f365a8862aac.JPG

Then here are the expected goal numbers I referred to. 57% for Jack's line, 60 for Erod, and 84(!) for the Skinner show. Of course, that's purely because Jeff has had about thirty shots from in tight already.

And as always...the sample sizes are so small that when you go to corsica's "line combos" nothing shows at first because the miniscule default "minimum TOI" slider, which sits at 50 minutes, has not been met yet by a single group of NHL players, so of course, take that into appropriate account (read - this team is not going to score 60%+ of the goals in its games this year)

Stats proof that Dahlin is a bust. I want 60% of goals and a 100 point season.

Oh and trade Hutton for letting in that goal off McCabe's boot.

In the meantime, this weekend was a good one for buffalo fans.

Hope this translates into road play.

  4. 2-3

Wins over Rangers and Coyotes. Close loss to Boston in the opener 4-3 and then Colorado 3-2 after going up 2-0. Vegas 4-1 loss, with a meaningless PP goal in third, empty netter for vegas.

    Eichel - 2 goals and 2 assists.

Middlestadt - 1 goal, one secondary assist

Dahlin - 3 assists, a post and a blown tire leading to a shorty against.

Sheary and Berglund - 6 Garbage style points between them

Hutton - .920 save percentage, 9 goals against.

  5. I’m an avid fly fisher and fly tyer. Thought I’d post some pictures of some recent catches:

Got out on the 4th for a bit of holiday fishing. Caught a bunch of cookie cutter 8-10” stock browns, and a few larger ones 13-15” (pictured). Also caught 15-20 creek chubs (also pictured ?), seems like every good trout holding spot I had to catch 1-2 before the trout would bite. Most were caught on nymphs but the largest of the day came on a dry fly. An Isonychia (Slate Drake) or possibly a Slate-Winged Olive hatch was just coming on around 11 when I caught him but couldn’t enjoy the whole hatch as it was pushing 100 with heat index already. It’s about time to ditch the waders and switch to wet wading.

The stream shot is where I do most of my trout fishing (Irondequoit Creek). Gorgeous little stream that is stocked in several places throughout the year.

The bass came opening weekend at North Ponds Park in Webster. Close to my personal best on the fly rod, not sure on the weight unfortunately. The pattern I caught him on was the Sculpin I’d tied (pictured).

    Nice tie.   Very clean.

    Whats the tail?

Dyed turkey tail. Hobby Lobby “costume feathers” find.

I don’t even have to be actively fishing, sometimes sitting on a rock in the middle of a stream smoking a cigar and sipping from a flask waiting for fish to rise can erase a lot of what life throws at you. One of my favorite times to be on the water is early morning watching the mist rise off the water. Of course the catching is fun too.

Tying can be therapeutic as well. I tie most of my own flies; the exception being ones that require spun deer hair, still working on adding that to my repertoire.

I really hope that's a top water fly, and doesn't just sink right down to the bottom feeders.

Copper, lead, tungsten and locker room chemistry it’s destined for the deepest pool.

Join us in the Sabrespace Rod and Gun Club thread.  Lots of fishing discussion in there.

Noice work on the vice.  I'm all thumbs.  My flies and jigs never look that clean.

On my way, got a few pics from the holiday that I’ll put up.

  8. Don't know if anyone else here fly fishes or ties their own flies.

Some combination of the heat, these gin and tonics, and the lack of hockey that's making me crazy but I decided to whip up some Buffalo Sabres inspired Copper Prince nymphs.

I give you the Blue and Gold Dahlin:

There's some green peacock SLF in there because every Sabres fan knows "Blue and Gold make green."

The brown hackle... our performance last season ?

  9. “Bozak - UFA, 32. Excellent in the faceoff circle, decent playmaker, goal scoring seemed to slip last year. Really suited for 3rd line role at this point in his career. ”

Doesn’t that describe ROR though? Change the age and swap 3rd line to 2nd. I don’t understand the people that want to get rid of a solid player, just because there might be a locker room problem. Especially when they base it off of one comment in a presser at the end of the season that saw them in last place.

Losing mindset....passing off AHL JAGs as NHL talent is not a mindset.

  10. "I love buffalo sports" then saying something against sports in general seems like saying "I'm not racist, but ..." and, well, anything after that.

I think that BoLu will be fine as a 3rd pair D-man that doesn't sniff the powerplay or penalty kill. He does show some flashes of offensive vision, a few times (more and more recently) he's made a pass to E.Rod or Bailey that fed into their quickness and sprung them into the offensive zone with speed and numbers.

I would like to see more goals out of our D-men as a whole but I don't think Beualiuoo is where we should be looking. The top-4 needs to improve in that area. Maybe Guhle can teach them a thing or two about joining the rush.

  11. It's like the Butt Goal (and I know how much y'all like the butt goal) only stranger:

    Coyotes v Hurricanes.

Puck gets stuck in goalie's skate trying to play it behind the net. Ends up inside the goal, good goal.

  12. Answer one: They see what is there pick 12 or later.*  <--- What I think will happen.

Answer two: Trade up to draft Mayfield  <--- what I want to happen

*required Bills cynicism  --- Then proceed to draft positions that they don't need because "best available" or take "sure bet" NCAA standouts that don't translate to the NFL well and we regret trading Tyrod "checkdown" Taylor after getting beat 27-6 by the browns

  13. I don't mind commercials. I do mind having to resort to grainy, unreliable questionably legal feeds when I'm not glued to my television.

However, seeing how awful NHL.com is I highly doubt they can pull their **** together and come up with something passable.

  14. Pfffffft. The desire to trade away useful-but-not-franchise pieces long predates the tank. Roy, Vanek, Pominville, Connolly, Myers, Satan, Hecht, Zhitnik. And more!

Part of the problem is that we consistently put the 'franchise' expectations on those guys. Vanek and Myers being some of the ones in recent memory. When they didn't play beyond their ceiling the "oh-woe-is-me" crowd barked for trades.
