  1. One has to believe they will be taking a long look at this in the off season. The average time it takes to get a review done is ridiculous. The offside challenge/rule needs to be edited or changed. Far too many times they are reviewing the offside looking to see if buddy's skate is a 1/32 inch off the ice, even for a split second. Not to mention it takes 15 minutes. Your a coach, your team is up 3-1 with 3 minutes to go in the third. your team gets scored on making it 3-2. Every single coach is throwing the challenge flag calling for offsides! the play looks blatantly onside but, oh wait, this guy's skate might leave the ice. when it's all said and done who cares if it's a good goal or not, they've lost all their momentum. I've seen it happen to many times. edit the rule and make it so the skate can leave the ice and still be onside, or take out offside challenge.

  2. That article put a fairly negative spin on it. The upper section(300's) of the MTS center is the only section in which you can buy a ticket that hasn't already been purchased by someone else. So 300-900 tickets depending on how many sections the decide to open up. So it's still technically a sellout. which is almost always the case for every sellout team.

  3. McDavid looks like he is just unstoppable and as much as I like Eichel, reality tells me that McD could turn into a 99 type of player.....I mean the moves, wow

I know!! I feel bad complaining about a couple 92-94 overalls, but damn a 97 overall center and 95 overall Dman.. been playing to much be a gm

  4. Hmm. Interesting.

It could create a bit of a moral hazard, though, couldn't it?

It's the team's responsibility to create a product that the local fans (and corporate purchasers) will clamour to see play live.

I seen that one coming. It is most definetly a valid argument. I think they are trying to come up with a long term solution for that, it takes time.

When Winnipeg bought the Atlanta thrashers they were a pretty terrible team, now they are a bubble team that won't make the playoffs. None of that mattered because they knew what they had because they lost it before. They sell out and are passionate, even though they aren't icing a very appealing product. this is the case with almost every Canadian franchise. something to think about.

I'm sure everything work out. Seems to be the way things are headed. Once Buffalo gets good again I have a feeling seats will be filled with blue and gold! We're on our way to being the new Chicago, fans from everywhere bandwaggon hopping on board. THE SABRES WILL BE FINE

  5. Thanks for watching my back boys! I'm disagreeing with you, but I was trying do so in a respectful manner and still get my point across. I meant no offense to you Smell. Wasn't even implying you were naive! But I did say naive in 3 posts in a row. I'll cool it okay Nfreeman! Haha

but what if that opportunity involved actively diversifying the allegiance of people in his arena or stadium?

i think he's phrasing it in a respectful way, fwiw.

That's the argument. at which point does the FO start broadoning the horizon? When locals can't buy tickets to see there team because they're sold out to other fans, then that's a huge problem. In my opionion the responsability is on the fans, the local ones to be precise.

  6. Considering that they'd've had to win the lottery a 2nd time from somewhere in the mid-20's had they gotten Eckblad rather than Reinhart - I'd prefer the hand TM dealt. :)

No no, just have to add sending Ekblad back to junior for another year, to the list of "good hockey moves" we've made the last couple years

Ekblad is really good. Florida was smart to take him #1 overall.

That's what I've been noticing too. Personally I'd go with McDavid Ekblad, with no disrespect to Eichel and Reinhart. they will lead us to glory someday

But Ekblad is a beast. Defensive awareness off the charts

  7. The dust is beginning to settle on this rebuild. the Sabres have their new core, or at least a few key pieces to the puzzle. Were headed in the right direction and its only a matter of time until we start making the playoffs.

The Sabres lost the lottery, 2 years in a row. in my mind those 2 players, McDavid and Ekblad, are arguably the 2 best prospects at their respective positions in the last 10 years. That really stings, but I am pretty thrilled with plan B. I would not be the least bit surprised if all 4 players made their way into the HHOF.

So let the discussion start here, who would you rather have given the choice of the 4?

  8. I think this does sort of get to the issue that I am interested in discussing: How do fans of the OneBuffalo teams feel about the potential for Pegula Sports and Entertainment to be courting not just out of town fans, but fans of opposing teams?

Taking it to a different level: How about courting corporate entities based in rival markets? Like, what if following a reconfiguration of the NFL divisions (where the new AFC North is Browns, Bengals, Steelers, Bills (I've heard this may happen)) PSE were to sell a suite, or perhaps a share in a suite, in the FNC and in the new football stadium to Dick's Sporting Goods (based in Pittsburgh, btw) with the idea being that Dick's would bring Penguin and Steeler fans to Buffalo for games? I'm just spit balling here.

One would be naive to think Pegula won't do everything in his power to maximize every penny. you don't become a billionaire without doing whatever it takes to make $

    http://www.thespec.com/living-story/6255194-shuffle-off-to-buffalo-to-watch-the-leafs/

Why do the Sabres love enemy fans in their building? Because they'll stay at the Marriott and buy donuts the next morning? The linked article is a very thinly veiled press release from the Sabres about what to do before and after a game (hint: you don't have to leave Pegulaville).

That sound you just heard is one more of the million things you do to win a Cup getting flushed down the toilet. You don't do anything to see your home ice advantage get hurt, let alone actively encouraging it. WTF! What's next, taking a couple of games to Hamilton each season? I mean, why not? It would do wonders for future attendance in Buffalo, and Timbit sales.

Smell, please spare me your tired "Pangloss/prescriptive tendency" routine. For a franchise that bragged that "Starting today..." there is no defending this statement by one of the team's vice presidents, who I presume is speaking for the franchise itself. Speaking of which, I wonder where Terry comes down on this. Meddling? On the business side, on something that impacts the team, hell yes. He can't possibly love Leafs fans in the building in droves, can he, being the fanatic superfan that he is?

The original post was not about Pegula. I never blamed Terry for it. I wondered what Terry would think of it and suggested if there was a time to meddle in the business side, this was it. Others, conveniently, made this thread into something else.

So that's your story and you're sticking to it?

  9. The question was: I have a question for you PA, is it Pegulas fault that the Canadian fans are coming to the arena? Has it been happening since before he was the owner?

I didn't answer because it's totally irrelevant. Canadian fans have been coming since Day One. Leafs fans have been coming in droves for a long time. I don't know when that phenomenon began, maybe it coincided with higher ticket prices at the ACC. Their coming isn't the issue.

Is there something wrong with viewing a profile?

No, I was just saying to call you out so maybe you'd answer me!

My bad I didn't realize that fact was irrelevant. After all he built a hotel and restaurants specifically for the leaf fans! It would be a shame if he never advertised it.

  10. BTW, the idea that the statements from Gibby (the Sabres are losing money!) and the freelancer put this all to bed is sorta funny.

So, wait, people involved in a somewhat odd published statement are at the ready to say that the statement means nothing, is being taken out of context, yadda yadda?

    Will wonders never cease?

So that's the discussion here? whether pegula is openly inviting leaf fans or not?

I guess I'm the minority here that doesn't see a problem. I mean really, I read the article (wonder how many of you didnt) and I fail to see any kind of conspiracy. even if I could slightly see the silhouette of the link that's being made, who cares!! Even if pegula phoned the guy up, I don't care of he wrote the article himself! I come from a place where the low cap team sells out! Very few opposing fans who couldn't be heard if they shouted. (when the shares come to town I get heard don't get me wrong!) The point I'm going for is, our owner isn't half the owner Pegula is. But if we had empty seats, he could fly out Vladimir Putin of he felt like it. it's like complaint about the president but you didn't vote! Get your vote in and go to a game or 2. Maybe it would be as loud when we score as when the leafs do

  11. Well okay then.

Is the point in the OP like The Dress? Some people see one thing, others another?

I wonder whether loving the presence of fans of a rival opponent in your building presages other changes to come.

    I don't know anything. I just wonder.

Try to look at it from a business perspective! People in seats=good

    Empty seats=bad

Everything else is basically an irrelevent discussion. When they start turning away sabres fans, or selling out of area first. then this becomes a story. however is the arena is 99% full, and 98.9% are leaf fans, it's still not an issue. has to be a sellout crowd for this to even begin to matter

I mean you're not selling out! Who cares if the guy going to the game is just there for a hotdog, to cheer the opposing team, or to sit in his seat and play pocket pool. he's doing more for the local economy and the team then most of its actual fans. that's where the problem lies. the fans don't have the loyalty. Leafs havent won a cup since Buffalo has been in the league, but they always sell out!

Maybe the article is to challenge the locals!!

Hey you don't want to come out and support the team? well I know a bunch of crazy canucks who will take those tickets.

Just for the record. I know most of you guys even though you don't know me. long time lurker. But a few pages up thread I asked PA a question directly relevant to the thread. he viewed my profile but never answered! Why? Because it shot down his "theory" and he didn't want that. I have enjoyed many of your posts PA. but like I said before, i think, to a lot of posters you've lost some credability with all this

  12. I was ready to just call it a day regarding this situation, but I would like to riff off this if I may...

When I first read the original post, I was fairly disgusted at the sight of yet another smear campaign being launched by the OP. Despite the wailings of the uninformed, I did what I do 99.9% of time - I ignored it. I did not intervene, comment, warn nor perform any action. I then checked back and saw LGR4GM's post. My level of disgust grew because he was baited into that reply. Again, I chose to ignore the thread because after years of this, after you tolerate it for so long, your instinct is just to tolerate more. I did not intervene, comment, warn nor perform any action. In fact, no moderator stepped in. Heavy-handed indeed! (I later learned that LGR4GM decided to step away from the board. I'm sensing a theme here...)

Later that evening, a member sent in an official complaint. That's normally when we step in - when someone asks us to (oh, the oppression...). While it was clear LGR4GM's comments were not worded according to community standards, it was also clear that the original post was meant to inflame. Stanley cup being flushed down the toilet? Games to be played in Hamilton? Gratuitous pot shots at the "fanatic superfan" owner? All over a single sentence? NONE of that verbiage was necessary to strike up a conversation about opposing teams fans in the building. NONE. Whatever legitimate discussion point the OP was attempting to make was drowned out in inflammatory rhetoric.

So, a warning was issued to both parties... and I'll stand behind that 100%. And no, I don't care to hear anyone's rebuttal regarding this. Not your circus.

No one was banned, no posts removed (LGR4GM deleted his own post). Just a simple request to stop being an asshat. My word, not chz's.

Instead of the OP discussing this in private (or give enough time to discuss it in private... you know, like a responsible person confused by the situation would do), it was decided that his PRIVATE warning should IMMEDIATELY be the start of a PUBLIC spectacle. You know, the kind of spectacle we all enjoyed last December when he took it upon himself to announce GDD's departure.

And that was my match meet gasoline moment. This is where the OP continually raises his middle finger to me and the other volunteers. It was a bush league, divisive, dick move that accomplished nothing constructive. He posted that to create chaos and chaos is what we all got. <slow clap... George Bush - Mission Accomplished>

That's the moment when I decided speak up. That's a deliberate disruption of the community. Moderators should have the ability to contact people in private and work out issues without the Mean Girls' drama. We are not the enemy and we will not be treated as such.

And there is your timeline for anyone still harboring the notion that opinion is being stifled and moderation is heavy-handed or wondering why this thread became a lightning rod.

Easily 98% of all members that have came through the doors of TBD or SS have never had a post deleted or have been warned by a moderator. Participating conflict free in my communities comes with a giant red EASY button. How hard can it possibly be? The amount of work you need to do to overcome my desire to avoid conflict is immense. I would say 2% of the members command 98% of our attention. Well over 5 million posts have passed through our communities. Just a little perspective...

I have reading this entire thread since it started. I just don't get it! I find it amazing how many people rush to defend PA. LGR4GMs post was bang on. I thought all of your posts, SDS, were well thought out, and made perfect sense.

Honestly, read the article, read PAs posts. you'd have to be crazy to think he's trying to have a legitimate discussion about hockey.

Do you know what the Toronto maple leafs do when sabres fans show up in droves to the air Canada center? Neither do they, because they sell out!!! I don't care if Pegula paves the highway in gold in the FNC to SO! If we're not selling out who cares who is there! Stimulate the economy anyway you can. I don't get some people's ignorance on this issue. theres 100 posts that explain it perfectly up thread but some of you just don't get it!! Sure it's great to have discussion! But let's not sit here and discuss how Marcus foligno is the most skilled player on our team! Honestly you'd have a better chance of convincing me of that then the other bs in this thread.

One more thing. I especially don't understand this, so someone help clarify it for me! I've seen a few people say "pegula only cares about money, not winning cups".. Those 2 obviously go hand in hand. win a cup, more fans, more money!! that's the way it goes

  13. Wow boys... I don't post often, So most of you will skip over my comment like I never said anything and that's fine by me...

Now I don't live in buffalo. I've never been to the FNC.

I have a question for you PA, is it Pegulas fault that the Canadian fans are coming to the arena? Has it been happening since before he was the owner?

Now this is just pure speculation, I'm no business man, but if I was, and I had just made a huge investment(harbour center) and I realized that "30-40%" of the people at the game were Canadian fans, I would probably do a little bit of advertising to the select market of which my investment was to reach.

Yes,, teams do sometimes try to only sell playoff game tickets to the home crowd. That's because they are selling out. I've never seen a team say they'd rather have empty seats.

Put the Pegula pitchfork away, you're only losing credability on here by reaching at straws. Pegula doesn't control who comes into the arena, if he wants to make a return off of some true fans(leafs have sucked forever and they still go to the games) then what's wrong with that?

  14. My completely unbiased opinion:

Where do the Sabres finish: (3rd)

Eastern Conference Finals: (Washington vs. Sabres)

Western Conference Finals: (Anaheim vs. Calgary)

Stanley Cup Finals: (Anaheim vs. Sabres)

    Stanley Cup Winners: (Sabres)

    Rocket Richard Trophy: (Eichel)

    Hart Trophy: (Eichel)

    Vezina Trophy: (Lehner)

    Norris (defenseman): (Risto)

    Jack Adams (coach): (Blysma)

    Calder Trophy: (Eichel)

Bonus: Who will be the biggest name moved during the season? Eric Staal

Bonus: How many Buffalo Sabres participate in the All Star Game? (4: Eichel, Kane, O'Reilly, Girgensons)

Bonus: Biggest bounce back season by any player? (Cody Hogdson)

I am appalled you don't have Risto in the all star game.
  15. Keeping in mind that if we rode some of the players we traded all the way to the ground we would have probably won more games and not had Reinhart and Eichel. We'd have other people, just not them specifically. Also, the old core players were generally dealt as rentals. Players like Myers with term left were the exception. Assuming all the pending UFAs would have re-signed here is iffy.

Here's a list. Enjoy. The O'Reilly deal isn't included in the list.

    http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_team/Buffalo_Sabres/1

It's a little more complex obviously but you can connect Pominville and Sekera directly to O'Reilly, McGinn, Larsson, and Vaclav Karabacek

Vanek became Moulson, Lehner, Brendan Guhle, Eric Cornel, Brycen Martin, and Josh Gorges (via a #2 acquired for Moulson)

    Gaustad became Girgensons

Derek Roy became Ott, Ott and Miller are connected to Kane, Bogosian, Carrier, Kasdorf (via STLs 2015 #1), a 2016 #3 and a 2017 #2 (obtained for Chris Stewart)

Regher and McNabb are connected to Deslauriers and Fasching

Leopold became Justin Bailey and Anthony Florentino

    TJ Brennan became Gustav Possler

I think we made out pretty well and that Jordan Leopold deal has potential to be grand larceny. Out of the players we dealt from "the core" the only ones who play for the team we traded them to are McNabb (not really core), Pominville, and Gaustad

Thanks, very interesting stuff. I was on board with this since Regier but the wheels in motion.
  16. Patience is fine but we actually have too many centers now (after having none forever). Now we need to figure out who can move to wing effectively. Those who can't (like Hodgson) will need to be moved at some point for other assets that better fit our needs. Larsson is a bit an issue at the moment. Where do you play him? He was much better at center than wing but he doesn't project into a top 6 role with O'Reilly, Eichel and eventually Reinhart on the team. FWIW I think we'll end up with Eichel and Reinhart in the 1,2 slots with O'Reilly sliding to wing. That would make Larsson a #3 center which on the surface seems like a good role for him given his solid defending and decent offense, but then where does Girgensons go? Girgensons surely needs more than 4th line ice so you'd hope he could transition to 2nd or 3rd line wing, right?

Some people are still gnashing their teeth over trading Grigorenko. If we sent him to Rochester he'd be claimed. So to keep him we'd have to play him. Is he a top 6 center on this team right now? I don't think so. Is he next year? I don't think so with O'Reilly, Eichel and Reinhart all on board by then. So if he's not that what do you do with him? We have at least 2 #3 centers better than him right now and he's not a #4 energy line player. We reached a dead end with him and I'm glad they moved on

There are still some moves to be made to convert assets into different types of assets that better fit what we need

and then trade Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick for Vaclav Karabacek, Josh Gorges, a 2016 7th, Jack Nevins, Cody McCormick, and Matt Moulson.

Also, it seems to me the NHL owes us a lottery win here at some point. I'm ok finishing 14th and then winning the lotto.

Yah, I would be curious to see someone break down every traded player and who those picks turned into over the last 3 years so we could see how much we actually improved over our old core. We are definitely due for a bounce but I'd take getting away with a kicked in goal in the SCF over winning the lottery.

Edit:fixed some of the grammar mistakes

  17. Would you trade Thomas Vanek on an expiring contract for Matt Moulson, Robin Lehner and a 2nd rd pick? I don't think there is too many here who would say no! I agree looking at most of our trades I believe we overpaid, or at least seem to have at this point in time, but I also believe the place the team was in this year, was a terrible environment for prospects. Hopefully now we can show them a winning culture, or at the very least not cheering for them to fail.

  18. I could see Murray talking to Winnipeg also, they have 10 defenseman under contract and I believe Josh Morrissey will make the team.

I'd be happy to see Murray get a guy like Enstrom. He's under contract for 3 years at an AAV of 5.75M which is quite a bit but nothing that would cripple us. He's exactly .5PPG in his career, with 2 50pt seasons. He rarely shoots the puck and mostly racks up assists. If he started shooting I could see him getting 50 pts for us.

  19. Anybody interested in acquiring Yandle? One year left on his deal at 2.625M(50% was retained by Arizona). 28 yr old LHD who doesn't miss time and is career Avg PPG is over .5.

The rangers are too tight to the cap to resign all of their RFA's and could look to move Yandle. Seems like a good fit if we can get him for a decent price. However the Rangers gave up some pretty significant assets to acquire him so he may cost more then I'd be comfortable spending.

  20. Both DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident, if convicted would give ROR a criminal record. A conviction for both, or either, could very well render ROR inadmissible to cross the border. Last time I checked crossing the border is an important part of playing in the NHL. This is definitely cause for concern, and should be treated as such.

For those of you reading this and freaking out, I wouldn't worry too much. Professional athletes are often able to, somehow, plead these types of charges down to a misdemeanor. Dustin byfuglien got a DUI on a boat in Ontario a couple years back. Jarret Stoll got off on possession charges. I think that ROR will get off on these charges but it is certainly not the joke that some are making it out to be.

Now if you all will excuse me, I'm going to grab a Timmy's coffee and maybe watch last year's WJHC, or maybe watch the 2014 or 2010 winter Olympics, sounds like fun eh?
