  1. I've read the entire thread since I first posted it, and it's still legit in my view. Today, I feel more sorry for Ruff than anyone else. Sure, his voice might have grown stale and players weren't responding to him as in the past. But there is no doubt in my mind that year after year he got the most out of mediocre rosters put together by Regier. How Lindy must feel today knowing he was let go after bleeding Sabre blue and gold for over half his life.

Meanwhile, the Wizard of Odd in charge of building the team finally pulls the plug on his futile roster -- and is near complete in dismantling the "leadership core" we've endured since the Drury-Briere bloodletting. Truth is, there was no leadership core left in place after '07. Regier's faith in Roy-Pomminstein-Connolly-Vanek as players ready to fill the void hastened our decline to mediocrity. Then Lucic made the ultimate mockery of the hollow core left behind.

Good coaches change teams. Don't choose it as a career if you don't accept that basic premise. Feel sorry for a guy(Ruff) who should have lived in three cities on average for a real coach? No FN way. Google Bowman. Google Al Arbour to dispute my premise. The second team in history to come back from a 3-0 deficit,; plus, Arbour was long tenured coach who had 4 cup wins as a player and 4 as a coach. Ruff? LOL! ---------- Oh and leadership core is a great catch phrase, but unfortunately, talent wins. WE lost the leadrship core, and that's why we lost? Isn't the coach the leader? Really?

Oh. and by the way, all that LOVE this board loves to heap on the Drury/Briere era? What cups did they win? Don't waste my time with the answer: ZERO. Danny still has zero and Drury has one, when he was facing other third line players, Hell, Roy and Pommer played well against 3rd line talent in 2006.

  2. And Muckler did? Really? Ownership MADE him dump salary that he had screwed up on. Did that chemistry he had built work? No FN way. Is Darcy a Weasel? Absolutely NOT!!!! Is upper management STUPID? Absolutely yes! I've pi$$ed away season ticket money since 1981 on this joke for one run at the cup frinal .. MY fault and I was stupid, but I love the game. TP has come in and Pi$$ed away his money. But, his head is in his behind if he keeps DR. I made my decision when I received my season ticket letter on fan appreciation night: "WE are increasing season ticket prices again." This iletter included the usual PR BS for dummies. Fine! I'll buy Shea's season tickets, see quality for much less money, and have my wife enjoy it also. I'll buy 2-3 games on Stubhub or from scalpers so I don't pay the Sabres' single game price when QUALITY teams come in, and watch talent kick our sorry a$$es. We'll go on two more vacations each year at quality resorts or cruise lines, and the Sabres organization can lick my taint. I'll sit in the comfort of my home, watch the game, and flip the channel when they suck. Then I can blame the CROWD for their losses, cuz they BOOOOOED the pussies!!!

  3. Yep. Roy brought it on the ice almost every game. Let's say 72 out of 82, because we all know that every player has off nights. I'm being conservative here.

Stafford brings it the other 10 games out of 82. I'm being generous here.

If Roy needed to go, fine. He's not a potential Hall of Famer. He's not an All-Star. He was a good, maybe even very good, player. And the Sabres got the a quality player--but not the same type of player--in return. It was a good trade.

But where the hell is the production?! That's what DR failed to return to the team.

I, too, will leave LR out of it, except to say this: Stafford is no different without Ruff than he was with him. And that's on Stafford, not Ruff, and not Rolston. And I actually had a drink with the guy (Stafford, not Darcy or Lindy) during the lockout, and I like him as a person. I really do. I just don't like him as a hockey player, especially in Buffalo.

Noi argument from me on this post.

  4. No worries; I was wondering if I'm slipping. It's been a long day!

Also, as the title of this thread might suggest, I have long wondered why anyone would be more concerned with getting Roy out of town than Stafford. Sure, we all think Roy was a problem in the dressing room, mostly because of the radio, but we don't really know. What we do really know is that he was good for almost a point per game and didn't float. I don't hate that he's gone, but the team really misses the production. And Stafford remains.

As I said the other night, we aren't far apart on the state of this team. Roy consistently brought much more than Staff and was CHEAP for what we received in return. Stafford played about 30 gms over 4 years for this waste of money, with many more physical attributes than Roy. I thought Roy was a smart signing for the $ at the time. DR just did't have the forsight to build a complete team. I'll leave LR out of it. We both know where we stand and I can respect your opinion.

  5. Either way, Roy had to be moved, good for him that he is excelling with the change of scenery. The biggest issue wasn't moving Roy, its not making other moves to replace what he did produce here cause he wasn't a horrible player, he put up numbers, just his play was wearing thin here

I can't argue anything you said and I agree completely.

Still, all that addition by subtraction stuff that our local radio station (WGR) spouted on a daily basis, was typical media BS. The team isn't well built. They made Roy the whipping boy, as is often the case when they need a theme for their show, and they were wrong.

For two weeks last year, those clowns told us how Luke Adams was the young center the Ducks would take in a package for Getzlaf.........

.........Humph? I take what they say with a grain of salt. Still, I converse with people on a daily basis who take their word as gospel. It is frustrating.

How do you draw that conclusion from what I wrote?

Sorry Eleven, that wasn't fair on my part.
  6. How old is Jagr? He couldn't do it with V last year, and he is the end-all-be all on this team. For all the Roy haters that BD spawned on the radio, the change has been good for him. Despite his stand-up comments, where do you think Ott would rather be?

  7. And as Hodgson gets older and more consistent the appreciation over this trade will increase in Sabre Nation.

    GO SABRES!!!

I was okay with this trade because we needed a center but hated giving up a guy who actually controlled the puck on the wall.

But couldn't one argue that as Kassian gets older and more consistent the appreciation of this trade will decrease in Sabre Nation?

Again, a pointless thread that will have no answer fro a few years.

  8. Would Lindy have quit if Darcy had been fired?

I'm probably just drawing a blank here, but did Darcy say he would never fire Lindy, or did Paul Hamilton say it so many times, we think Darcy said it?

Funny on Hamilton. That's where we've heard it certainly. The WGR mantra becomes reality KInd of like Washington or the nightly news. If it is repeated enough, it becomes the truth..

Look, I have been firmly on the side of both coach and GM going since we bowed out to Boston last time in the playoffs. It was obvious that THEIR (both DR and LR) vision for a team wasn't working in today's NHL. Clutching, grabbing ,and interfering requires big boys and guys with attitude as well as skill. We have skill without attitude and attitude without skill in general.

As to his public statements, ownership, or GM often endorse their unerlings to the media and public. It is common. We've all heard the sports center comment "Joe Blow just got endrsed by his GM." Then the following statement from the broadcaster: "that's the kiss of death."

  9. I have this feeling in my gut that Darcy is a weasel. Maybe you think I'm in left field, but there are a few things banging around in my head that just don't help me think otherwise. Such as:

    - Building the current lineup and selling the "expectation of making the playoffs." As the reality of what he's assembled now is revealed, Ruff becomes the sacrificial lamb at the expense of Darcy's heartless, mentally fragile roster.

    - Giving Ruff mediocrity to work with year after year and holding onto "his" guys beyond their useful life. And adjusting way late to the size and toughness required come playoff time.

    - Dismantling the leadership core of this team (Drury, Briere, McKee), then pouring salt on the wound by botching Vanek (leaving him exposed to an offer sheet) and Roy (allowing him to go to arbitration to ultimately be overpaid). All the while, we're lead to believe he didn't have "the resources" (i.e., ownership with deep pockets) to prevent it.

    - Offering Ted Nolan the one year contract when he became the GM. Say what you will about Nolan, but he had the balz to tell Darcy where to put that embarrassment of a contract offer.

I can't help but think what a mess he's created now, and yet he remains unscathed.

Two thirds of that leadership core has been out of the NHL for a few years and didn't do much for their new teams. Nolan failed on next gig in the NHL. We need to quit living in the past.

Most would say Roy contract was cheap for his point production.

The entire organization and local media sold playoff expectations.

Ruff had roster input and shouldn't get a free pass on what this team looks like.

And, I have wanted DR gone for several years, simply because it has been obvious he is out of touch with how to build a winner in today's league.

  10. I want to hear Andrew Peter's side/thoughts on Lindy Ruff.

Wow! I might not sleep tonight waiting for what Andy has to say. Peters has been on the news tonight Thursday will be old news. Like him cuz he makes Kev's show semi-interesting. In reality, he's smart enough to make more money on the radio after a marginal career, I respect that, We love our goons.

  11. Looking for a recommendation-

I enjoy series based off a character, my favorites are:

Any series from Robert B Parker (Spenser, Stone, Randell)

The jack reacher series by lee child

The Prey series by John Sandford

And to a lesser extent the women's murder club by Patterson

Based on my preferences can anyone make a recommendation on a new series for me? Thanks in advance...

I have read the same Patterson, Sandford and Child as you. Have to read technical for work, so love light, action reading at home. The Sandford Virgil Flowers series is as good as his Prey series. His Kidd series is okay and am currently on the fourth of that series.. Daniel Silva's Gabbriel Allon series very good and made me explore some middle east history. My favorite of this genre is Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series.
