  1. As humorous as this would be, my allegiance lies with Swindon Town FC, the Robins

In all seriousness, do you find it hard to follow a third tier team? From a logistic standpoint I mean.

This is a double edged sword for me. I fear that once soccer is commercially viable in the US, the game will come under great pressure to become more 'tv friendly' and start including such American 'improvements' as timeouts, 4 quarters and whatever.

I don't think that would happen. When MLS did those things it went nowhere. Only when MLS started to represent normal Euro leagues did it begin to gain any traction.

On the other hand, if America can embrace soccer, despite the built in tendency to reject anything European, perhaps it will open the door to go to the metric system, which would be a huge step forward for the country.

In the words of the great Abraham Simpson, "The metric system is the tool of the devil. My car gets 40 rods to the hogs head and that's the way I likes it."

  2. Here's one... no one will hire Jay Mariotti, the columnist/sports personality from the Chicago Sun-Times. I know he's a wife abuser but maybe he can reform...I wish Buffalo could get him...he's a national personality and Buffalo needs a gifted sports reporter like Mariotti...Could he be any worse than Bucky and Sully?

Meh to Mariotti. I actually have no beef with Bucky. Sully is garbage though. Stopped reading him a while ago and skip the days he is on WGR.

  3. Monica, better than Steffi? I think not, sir. Not that I think you were trying to start a debate like that, just thought I'd point out that Steffi was twice as good as Monica.

As far as grunting goes...I don't think i really care either way, some are annoying others aren't, I'm pretty sure I did it unconsciously during my tennis career, so i guess i can't condemn it. And i agree with the 1919 comment, I feel that way seeing the players wearing all white a Wimbledon.

    Agassi is that you? :-P

I just meant in general. Usually these "grunting is awful" statements are pointed at Serena and Venus. Graff and Seles were really before my time anyway.

  4. Some players find the excessive grunting of other players to be a distraction.

When Seles was stabbed by a guy who was stalking Graf, there was a lot of speculation that the stabber resented Seles for distracting Graf with her excessive grunting.

Maybe? It seems like an excuse for getting beat by a better player.

That being said, when commenters talk about the grunting it doesn't seem like they are objecting for competitive balance, but rather for appearance reason. Like grunting isn't dignified.

  5. Anyone hear there's a movement ( supported by Martina N ) to eliminate the grunts and screaming from women's tennis. To be honest I really like the back and forth of it. Thoughts ?

I have never understood this. Who cares if they grunt? Why is this even a big deal? Tennis is a great spectator and participatory sport but the country club rules need to be dropped. This isn't 1919 anymore

  6. There is no such scenario. Under this completely idiotic new scheme, the team with home field advantage starts with two games on the road. So Oakland is at Detroit on Saturday and Sunday before the best-of-five series shifts to Oakland (meaning Oakland, with home field advantage, might have only one home game).

Thank you. That is idiotic andOakland must be really mad as Detroit is the worst road team in the AL playoffs at 38-43 on the road.

  7. I just shouted "he tagged herring toss!" in my cube. So lots of Internet points for you Mr Eleven.

Anywhooo...I'm excited for the start of the MLB playoffs (especially with no hockey). As I will be there next weekend, I'm hoping Detroit will be home. Does anyone know the scenarios that could make that happen?

  8. Yesterday I started and finished The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. It's a children's adventure novel and I adored it. Filled with wonderful puns and considerable admiration of plays on words and thoughts. If you enjoyed Alice In Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass I highlt recommend Tollbooth.

After Tollbooth, I started Children and Fire by Ursula Heigi. Too early to make a determination on quality, I will be sure to let you know if it's worth reading.

    In my queue after that:

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlin

    Watchmen by Alan Moore

A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire Part 3)

  9. I recently finished The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall and Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. I enjoyed both. Polygamist is long (approximately 800 pages), but the story was rich enough to deserve it. Sense of an Ending was also a great read and is much shorter. The best part was how well it lent itself to discussion.

I'm currently 200 pages into Game of Thrones. I find I am enjoying it much more than I anticipated I would. The suspense and intrigue are great, and it's not too fantasy.

Finished Game of Thrones. I ended up underwhelmed. It would have made a better graphic novel.

Starting Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson for my science fiction book club.

  10. I've never read anything by Julian Barnes that I didn't like. He's a great writer that we don't hear too much about on this side of the Ocean. Arthur & George is one of my favorites; I may re-read that this summer if I can't get into anything else.

That was the first Barnes book I have read. I will give Arthur and George a read.

In my signature I have a line from Tinkers by Paul Harding. Beautfully written and worth reading for the prose alone. If you haven't read it that may be a good summer book for you.
