  1. Last night's effort from Stafford is EXACTLY why this pansy needs to get off this team sooner than later. When I see that he can put forth effort like that from start to finish and be a real difference maker within a game, it makes me sick to my stomach to think about how many game this free loader just mails it in. I have NO doubt in my mind he is thinking "I'll play hard for a few games, get my value up and maybe they can trade me to another team where I can mail it in all over again."

There is NO explanation that he can give on why we can see a game like that ONCE every year. Knowing that he has the talent but NO heart makes me hate him even more. Play hard Staff because nobody would love to get your trade value up more than me.

100% this. God, so this. It's way worse to watch him play like that and know most nights he simply chooses not to. That's awful.

There's no shame in trying and failing. But to have the talent he has and squander it? That's a sin.

  2. Being involved in a double murder is a wee bit more serious than what your typical NFL criminal does. On top of that, most NFL criminals don't get touted for their intangibles anywhere near as much as Lewis does. I'm basically numb to watching criminals play football, but to glorify Lewis for things other than his physical play on the field is what really irks me.

    This is EXACTLY the problem.

If what the media said of Lewis "He's a good linebacker. He hits hard and clean. He diagnoses the defense and gets to the right spot" then I would probably move on from hating Ray Lewis.

But it's not what is said about him. I hear "he's pure class." Or "he's a leader." Or other things that horrendously gloss over the fact that he (at best) was in a group that murdered two guys.

  3. I was 13 in 1998 and my main memory from that summer is Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. It was the biggest athletic phenomenon of the past 20 years. Keeping them out of the Hall will not take away those memories--it just makes the Hall look stupid. Put them in and say "May have used steroids."

    Done.

  4. I know what you mean Hank. That's not really my style but I'll give it a shot...

    - Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger).

    - Song of Ice and Fire books (Give it a chance even if you don't like fantasy).

    - Stephen King's Dark Tower series

That's all I can think of now sorry. Like I said they are not my cup of tea.

  5. Bumping because I like this thread and I don't want it to be buried:

    1. Children and Fire was OK. I won't complain but I'd pass.

    2. I enjoyed The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlien much more than I expected. I usually find his work too militaristic but this was very fleshed out. It's strengthe was sentient computer Mike's desire for human interaction. Mike really paved the way for my all time favorite sci-fi character, Lt Commander Data.

    3. Watchmen by Alan Moore is so much more than a comic. It was the fourth time I read and I really took the time to admire the use of paneling and what can really be described as shot structure. It's a brilliant novel that happens to be graphic.

    4. On the note of graphic novels, I read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. A story of a girl before, during, and after the Islamic revolution. It's split into two parts, and I found the first considerably more enjoyable than the second.

    5. I read Martin Dressler by Steven Millhauser. A close observation about the American Dream at the start of the 20th century, I enjoyed it immensely. I would like to warn here that the majority of people in our book club did not like it, but those who did liked it a lot.

    Next on my reading list:

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin (I finished Book 2 in July and still haven't started 3. I have to get on it.)

  6. Ill credit ND with good wins over Stanford and Oklahoma, other than that, the quality was not too amazing. And they nearly lost several games to unranked teams.

This argument is not based in reality. They played zero FCS teams . They beat nine bowl eligible teams. They beat two BCS teams, both of whom are still alive to be conference champions.

Granted the Tide didn't have too hard of a schedule this year, I highly doubt ND would have been able to take on south Carolina or LSU.

Based on what evidence do you "highly doubt" that? LSU is ranked #7 which is one rank higher than Stanford's #8. S. Carolina is ranked #10 which is one rank higher than Oklahoma's #11. You mean to tell me ND could beat #8 and #11 but couldn't beat #7 and #10?

  7. The Toronto Argos will basically have home field advantage for the 100th Grey Cup next Sunday.

    http://www.cbc.ca/sp...ht-at-home.html

Yeah, yeah. I know it's only the CFL, but the Grey Cup game is usually more exciting than the typical blow-out Super Bowl.

I like CFL football. I don't knwo much about it, but I always find it intersting. The rule changes from the American game really increase the fun for me. I watch so many athletic NFL quarterbacks allow themselves to become second or third stringers when they could go to the CFL when they could be dominating in Canada. Oh well...money I suppose.

  8. I just wonder how Marlins fans will react to the bait and switch that was pulled on them for the opening of that new stadium. They went crazy buying free agents last year and now every single one they signed is gone, as well as all of the other higher profile guys on the team. That whole organization really needs to be wiped off the face of the earth, world series titles and all.

I agree. They got $360 million from the taxpayers for the new ballpark and they aren't even trying to field a competitive team. That's really, really crappy.

  9. The Blue Jays traded Yunel Escobar and prospects to Miami for Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, and Emilio Bonifacio.

As a Blue Jays fan, I am ecstatic. Buehrle really fills a hole at starting pitcher the Blue Jays have been needing. They are still going to win with offense, but the pitching quality just went sky high.

  10. Sort of.. There will still be ranking controversies. But if you are in, you will play in elimination bowls culminating in a National Championship game.

It'll be better, but still ripe with controversy for the one-loss teams.

Exactly. But it is a gigantic step in the correct direction.

  11. I don't think everyone else wins out. ND is a long shot IMO considering they almost lost to Pitt. I think K-State and Oregon is def possible. Also Alabama losing to (a #8 now) Texas A+M will be different in voting (again IMO). I am just saying I think Alabama still has a shot whether the others drop a game or not.

I don't think they are a long shot at all. Wake Forest is very beatable. I'd go as far as to say they cannot beat ND unless ND decides to give them the game (like they almost did to Pitt). That leaves USC. The Trojans have a great offense, but the ND defense has shut down Oklahoma and Stanford. Both of those teams have offenses that are as efficient as SC's (USC is averaging 42 points per game. OU is averaging 42 not including the ND game, Stanford is averaging 30 not including the ND game.). Really that game will be determined by ND's offense versus USC's defense--a matchup that favors ND.

USC can defintely beat ND, but in no way is ND a long shot to go undefeated.

Point of clarification. Bama won't beat Florida/Georgia. They will either beat Georgia or not. Florida was eliminated from the SEC champ game when the Dawgs beat Auburn.

Thanks. I didn't realize Florida was officially eliminated from the SEC title game.

the next question is if 2 of the 3 lose a game before the end and then Georgia beats Alabama do they then play for the BCS Championship?

Yes. A 12-1 Georgia team definetly gets in the title game over a 11-1 K State team or a 11-1 ND team. I'm pretty sure they would get in over a 12-1 Oregon team, but if Oregon's only loss is a one point loss in the Pac-12 title game it could be close (In my opinion, with all else equal, you put a Conference winner in over a Conference runner up every time).

  12. So I think if Bama wins out they will still play in the BCS championship game provided they Beat Georgia in the SEC championship game. On a side note I get to go to the Georgia Southern v Georgia game this weekend and as I look out my window at Sanford stadium, I gotta say I am pretty stoked.

Not if K-State, Oregon, and/or Notre Dame are still undefeated. At 12-0 (13-0 for Oregon), all will have a better case than a 12-1 Alabama team. Let's look at the resumes if all these things happen:

    1. Kansas State will have victories against three current Top 25 teams: Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas

    2. Oregon will have victories against three current Top 25 teams: Stanford, Oregon State, and USC/UCLA.

    3. ND will have victories against four current Top 25 teams: Michigan, Oklahoma, Stanford, USC

    4. Alabama will have victories against three current Top 25 teams: Michigan, LSU, Georgia/Florida

Assuming everyone wins out, if Alabama got in over an undefeated team that would be an outrage of monumental proportions.

  13. I'm not a Notre Dame homer. Never have been. I'm more of an old Big 8 guy, but that's disintegrated completely, now. (Thank you, four Texas teams that weren't needed or wanted.)

But someone tell me what Oregon and K-State have done to be ranked above ND. There's no rational explanation. After that incredible A&M-Bama game, ND, and not at least one of those two (especially Oregon, which plays overrated teams and other assorted Pac-12 crap), belongs in the top two. K-State at least has an argument; U of Nike does not. (Great coach, though.)

This is 100% correct. Just so right.

ND has beaten three teams currently in the top 25, two of whom are in the in top 15. They are 10-0. They should at least be #2.

  14. Good predictions overall, and largely mirrors my own minus a seeding change here or there...with one exception: how do you not have the Nuggets in the playoffs at all? To me they're head and shoulders better than the Jazz. I also don't know if Minnesota can make it given the injuries to Rubio and Love. I like Golden State or Houston to surprise and grab the 8 seed.

Because I totally forgot about them. That's awful on my part. Just plain awful I like that team too and think they will be very exciting. Very embarrased. I'd actually put them at 4 and bump everyone else down (so Minnesota no longer makes it). I can't believe I forgot them.

(By the way, a Memphis/Nuggets playoff series would be unbelievable)

No real interest in the NBA, but ...

    ... Toronto as 7th seed in the East ... :w00t: .

I think they can make the playoffs. And I have this amazingly dramatic situation where Derrick Rose comes back to a 11-30 Bulls team and leads them on a Sabres in 2011 tear that puts them in the eighth spot.

So to do that Toronto needed to be seventh.

  15. The NBA season starts tonight so I thought I would make some predictions and would love to hear your guys' thoughts.

    First Round:

    1 Miami over 8 Chicago

    2 Boston over 7 Toronto

6 New York over 3 Indiana

    4 Atlanta over 5 Brooklyn

    1 Lakers over 8 Minnesota

    2 Spurs over 7 Jazz

    3 OKC over 6 Portland

    4 Memphis over 5 Clippers

    Second Round

    1 Miami over 4 Atlanta

2 Boston over 6 New York

    1 Lakers over 4 Memphis

    3 OKC over 2 Spurs

    Third Round

    1 Miami over 2 Boston

    1 Lakers over 3 OKC

    Finals

    1 Miami over 1 Lakers

Regular Season MVP: Kevin Durant (robbing Lebron who deserves it)

    Finals MVP: Lebron James

  16. See, I really, really want Bama and the Ducks to lose. I'd LOVE to play the wildcats for the crystal football.

That said, the last 2 times Notre Dame was 8-0, they lost to Boston College. Still lots of work to do.

As an ND fan, I'd pick K-State as a NC opponent because they are the weakest of the four in contention. As a college football fan, I want ND to play Alabama in the NC. Last time that happened,

Also if Brian Kelly knew we were talking like this he'd make us run laps.
