  1. Let me just say this: I AM IN TOTAL SHOCK!!! What is Pegula doing? In the midst of a rebuild he bails? I'm stymied as to what even to say.

Of course I'm sorry to see Darcy go. But add to that, the timing. NOW??? After a win?

Add to THAT - he brings in Lafontaine, who admits he's not qualified for the job?????

Add to THAT - he brings in one of the worst coaches we've ever had. I am no fan of Nolan's. His extramarital affairs with a certain player's wife has gotten him blackballed in the league and rightfully so. I was hoping we'd never see him again.

Perhaps Pegula really doesn't know what he's doing.

  2. Excellent trade by Darcy. I should say ANOTHER excellent trade. The picks are what make the difference.

If both players walk at the end of the season, Buffalo wins. With all the talk about Vanek going to Minnesota because he lives there, his wife is from there, he went to school there and the Wild would like to sign him next season (after dumping Heatley's contract), I'd say that it is more likely that Vanek will walk on the Islanders.

While Darcy is at it, I'm sure he's working on a Miller trade, but I think he should also consider trading Ehrhoff too. It is obvious by his lackluster play that he's not happy here and would like to move on.

Darcy showed why he gets the big bucks.

  3. I am in the keep him camp. Year after year fans (including some on this board) complain about this team having no heart. Well you can never say that about Kaleta. He plays tough and hands out more than he gets. He's fearless and you can tell he's thrilled to be a Sabre and to have a chance to play the sport he loves.

Gee...I wonder what would happen if some other players on this team (Stafford) felt and acted the same way?

This is the kind of player Buffalo loves to cheer for.

  4. I know. I'm just saying, it was 23 years until Hull and Mikita put the Hawks 'back on the map' in 1961.

The Hawks were my team when I started following the NHL in 1964 while in college. Nesterenko, Pappin, Pilote, Stapleton, Esposito...those guys were my heroes with Hull & Mikita, of course.

In fact I just picked up Mikita's book "I Play To Win". It is going for almost $200 on ebay. I got it for $30. Might be a good investment.

    Vancouver?

    Nashville.

    Dallas?

    Los Angeles?

    Or Minnestoga.

How about Phoenix? I get the message - Darcy is damned good in making trades!

  5. I read this somewhere but the more I think about it, the better I like it.

How about a trade...Stepan for Hodgson? Stepan wants $4.7 million on a 6 year deal. That's not too bad for a kid of his talent level, plus he's only 23. Meanwhile Darcy is having a hell of a time with agent Winter in signing Hodgson and will continue to have a tough time as long as Hodgson keeps him as his agent.

I didn't know where else to put this, so I figured this thread was as good as any.

  6. I know the local guys touched on seattle getting an expansion team for the 14-15 season this morning. The talking heads out here on AM 750 have been talking about it all morning.

If I understand things correctly, Stern didn't want to give them an NBA team until Seattle broke ground on a new arena, but the city council didn't want to break ground on a new arena until they were awarded an NBA team. Bettman supposedly wil put a team in Seattle for an expansion fee of $275M, to play the 14-15 season in Key Arena. Once the NHL team is awarded they'll break ground on a new arena, once they break ground on a new arena an NBA team is soon to follow. There's still some financial details to be ironed out between Hansen, the prospective NHL Owner and the city counsil. I would be surprised if there is not an NBA and NHL team in a new Seattle arena by 16-17.

Where to put the 2nd expansion team? Obvious choice is Quebec and bump someone to the west. If the NHL dont want to do that though I think there's still some options. KC has a fairly new arena that could use a tennent. If you want a geographical rivalry for Dallas you could put a team in Houston or OKC. Portland is a possibility. And of course Vegas, I wouldnt mind the NHL being the guinny pig in that city.

I don't see the Seattle move working out well. It has already been determined that the NBA franchise will be the prime tenant of the new arena even if the NHL arrives there first. Secondly, there is a lot of competition for the sports dollar in a population considerably smaller than LA, Chicago, Philly, or NY. Thirdly, why consider moving to a city where the NBC Stanley Cup Finals were blacked out this past season? Obviously hockey is not an attraction there to begin with.

I could see Portland as a better venue, although every selection has liabilities. Quebec is the obvious second choice, but they are in the east.

In truth, they need to relocate or dissolve franchises rather than create new ones. But I know that will not happen in the near future.

  7. You're joking right? You take offense to my welcoming of nfreeman or else you wouldn't have said anything at all. Don't play stupid.

This board is about expressing your opinion. You expressed yours, I expressed mine. They are different, so what's the problem? You like this guy, I can't stand him. Two opinions. We could just as well be talking about any NHL player. You like him, I don't.

Stop overreacting. It's no big deal.

  8. I can't welcome a long-standing member back? Way to be a baby.

Don't be an idiot. I simply said, "To each his own" - meaning your entitled to your opinion and I to mine.

    What's your problem?

    :(

No, this isn't about you. I'm fine with you.

  9. You might've used the summer to bone up on basic posting skills like counting hockey seasons elapsed since the occurrence of an NHL draft, or confirming whether a team made the playoffs in a given year, or generally not blowing hot air around, but I guess you've been too busy.

I apologize for not being a member of your fan club. Sorry, but I don't suffer obnoxious fools well.

  10. First of all Myers? I pointed out that he has been on a three year course of regression. Over the past three seasons that opinion has become fact.

As for Hodgson, my thoughts on Hodgson are on the record and I stand by them. Same with Kassian, if he finds consistency that trade will be lopsided in the Canucks favor.

That is unknown conjecture. But what we do know at this moment is that the trade is heavily in our favor.

  11. Pittsburgh won with the likes of Kunitz and Cooke on the wing and Staal and Talbot up the middle in support of the big guns. The Kings had Brown as you stated along with Stoll and players like Kopitar, Carter and even a Dustin Penner. The Bruins won with Lucic, Recchi, Horton and Thornton.

Looking back on the previous Stanley Cup winners, it reinforces my opinion of a need to have have big physical forwards within the top the six.

Which does nothing but reinforce my belief that we should have taken Nichushkin.

  12. I think we should keep Ott for two reasons:

    1. He is a natural leader and can hopefully bring out leadership qualities in the kids

    2. He is a very hard working player who can serve as a model for Ennis, Grigorenko, and Stafford

  13. Remember when everyone was drooling over Z. Kassian?

    Now, there's a new Z.

It used to appear Kassian had that fire in his eye. I'm not sure what happened along the way. They talk about consistency and maturity n shite. It appears now that Zemgus has that same fire plus a work ethic and desire that I'm not sure I remember them saying about Zack. Man I hope he's the real deal.

No one likes an "I told you so!" but I can't resist. Everyone dumped on me when I complained so loudly when the Sabres' drafted this guy. In fact I turned off the TV in disgust when it happened, something I have never done. I told everyone that he was nothing but a thug and that we should have drafted Kulikov instead.

History may still prove me wrong, but I don't think so.

  14. Must really contribute to the wonderful aromatics that permeate hockey locker rooms.

I forgot to mention one important fact: I have no sense of smell. That makes things a lot easier.

I would think taking a puck off the skate would be all the more painful. Ouch !

A 1/8 inch piece of wool around the foot isn't going to provide any protection at all when hit by a slapshot.

  15. Today I learned that Jordan Leopold doesn't wear socks in his skates. That's kind of gross.

I never wore socks when playing, even in the winter.

Seems like it would be hard on his feet beyond the yuck factor.

Not really, even when wearing the old plastic boot (slipper) and later kangaroo skin skates (my favorites). You get a better feel of the ice without socks.
