  1. I'm confused, they're celebrating a goal that was illegal? And wasn't he off-sides to boot?

The goal is legal since the ref didn't call it a hand ball. It most certainly should have been disallowed, but it wasn't. In fact, the goal in combination with the other famous goal from the same half has come to symbolize perfectly the duality of Maradona. Say whatever you like about him, but scoring the best goal in history, and the most controversial goal in history in the same half..

As for the offside question: No, he is never offside on the play, so at least there is that.

  2. Football's best goal ever ...

Absolutely amazing goal from *Golden* ... Zlatan means golden in Bosnian. He certainly is!

As much as it pains me as a Norwegian to admit, the Swede scored a great goal. Greatest goal ever? Now, I'll give you a pass since the euphoria is still strong since it happened yesterday.

Funny though how the worlds best goal always seems to be scored against England?

  3. A record that I, and most others, thought would never be broken has been ...

Viva, Messi. Arguably the best ever. And still only in his mid-twenties.

    EDIT:

Still a way to go to beat the record for goals scored in a season. Still has time (9 matches) to score 9 goals to tie / 10 to break that record.

Lionel Messi is absolutely fantastic. If he brings a world cup to Argentina he will have to be ranked in the top three all time.

  4. In all seriousness, do you find it hard to follow a third tier team? From a logistic standpoint I mean.

Not in the least! I come from an age when I would follow the sabres through triweekly boxscores in the print paper. The internet has made being a Swindon Town FC fan a real breeze.

I don't think that would happen. When MLS did those things it went nowhere. Only when MLS started to represent normal Euro leagues did it begin to gain any traction.

I wish I could share your optimism, whippersnapper. I have a real and petrifying fear of this happening. I guess the fear is so intense because soccer is immensely important to me.

In the words of the great Abraham Simpson, "The metric system is the tool of the devil. My car gets 40 rods to the hogs head and that's the way I likes it."

Many things are subject to opinion, that the metric system is easier than the imperial system of measurements is not one of them.

  5. So you are a Swoodilypooper?

As humorous as this would be, my allegiance lies with Swindon Town FC, the Robins

    ESPN commisioned a scientific survey....

in America, amongst the 12-24 age group......

Soccer is the 2nd most popular sport....only behind the NFL...

and that Lionel Messi is more popular than Dwayne Wade....

This is a double edged sword for me. I fear that once soccer is commercially viable in the US, the game will come under great pressure to become more 'tv friendly' and start including such American 'improvements' as timeouts, 4 quarters and whatever.

On the other hand, if America can embrace soccer, despite the built in tendency to reject anything European, perhaps it will open the door to go to the metric system, which would be a huge step forward for the country.

  6. Belgium certainly has a great chance to qualify. Croatia is the main stumbling block, and Serbia (which I will join with NS in wishing are held out of the world cup) as a dark horse. I hope Belgium goes through, it's been a long time since the classic Belgian sides of the 80's when Enzo Scifo ruled the world and Belgium would have gone to the world cup final if it wasn't for the fact that they ran into the best player ever to play the game at the very peak of his career in the semi finals.

In even more exciting news, Norway are finding themselves in a decent position in their qualifiers after an atrocious loss to Iceland to open the qualifier. As exciting as World Cup soccer is, it really brings it to another level when Norway qualifies.

  7. The show is best when they talk about non NHL hockey. I would still like to hear from Division I hockey coaches, Junior team players and even international hockey. The CBA lemon is squeezed completely dry, and listening to Kevin Sylvester plug his book and how the Sabres would line up if they played football is meaningless. Yet, still much preferred to Colin Cowherd as many have already pointed out.

  8. Nothing is set on the back line right now. Klinsman has different pairings back there every game, I think he's trying to find the right chemistry.

Good luck to your country, I hope they advance.

Thank you! It's always a blast (the two times it has happened) for me when Norway qualifies, and this time around I won't feel guilty of they do. If they grab a spot it is at the expense of either Switzerland or Iceland, not two countries that I would consider it a disaster if they won't qualify.

  9. From left to right in front of Howard it went cherundalo, bocanegra, Cameron and Johnson. Cameron is going to be a stud.

    How's things looking for norway?

Cherundalo on the left back? Is that typical?

As for Norway, started out the qualifiers with a very disappointing loss 2-0 way against Iceland, won 2-1 at home against Slovenia last night. Persuasively the battle will be between Norway, Switzerland and Iceland. That's why the loss to Iceland was devastating. Luckily Iceland laid a turd against Cyprus which basically gifts Norway back the points they lost on Iceland to start the group. If they can take care of business at home, and beat the doormats away the group will likely come down to Norway's away games in Switzerland and Slovenia. The group is definitely winnable, but to be honest it looks like Switzerland has the inside track right now.

  10. Since my team in germany was relegated last year, the start of the season is close for us. Can't wait for it :)

    Ouch, sorry!

Bah, that's nothing! My favorite team went bankrupt a couple years ago and got relegated down to the 7th level of the league. Weird when your favorite team and one of the most storied franchises in the land plays in essentially a beer league. It's been great for our record though. Since it happened we've tied one game and won everything else.
