  1. I don't have the patience to listen to the guy for 24 minutes or whatever, but did he acknowledge that the NHL is in the process of receiving a $650,000,000 expansion fee for Seattle?  A 1/31 share* of that is a little under $21,000,000.  Even if the league office skims something off the fee for administration, every existing NHL team (with the possible exception of Vegas?) has a nice payday coming if it can just stick around for it.  No NHL team will fold for the next few years at least.

    * 31 would be the wrong divisor if Vegas isn't entitled to a full share.

  2. Educate me here.  I wouldn't think a team needs to make a formal call-up to have practice bodies, but does it?  If they just wanted an extra goalie or skater(s) for practice do they have to put them on the roster?  Or could they just borrow players from Rochester for the practice session and send them back down the Thruway after practice?

Thanks in advance for serious answers.

Fred Shero was under contract in the Ranger's organization (Bufflao's parent club), not the Buffalo Bison's Organization.  Shero was successful as a minor league coach before he came to Buffalo and he of course won a Championship in Buffalo in the final AHL season.  Being part of the Ranger system he went to Omaha of the CHL (a demotion of sorts) and eventually got the opportunity with the Flyers. The Rangers were run by Emile "The Cat" Francis who served as Coach and GM so Shero had to wait it out.

Punch did not have the opportunity to hire Shero, but he probably would not have since he wanted to get back behind the bench and beat Toronto (that dam Harold Ballard).  Punch hired Joe Crozier to coach Buffalo's AHL affiliate.  Joe was "called up" when Punch got sick in the teams second season.  Joe lead them to the playoffs in the 3rd season, the famous  "Thank You Sabres" season.  Season 4 did not go well, Gil was hurt and we missed the playoffs leading Punch to replace Crozier with Floyd Smith.  Smith took the team to the Cup Finals in his first season, then they tailed off and Floyd retired, leading us to Marcel Pronovost.  He was average at best.  Within two years the Knox's moved on from Punch and Marcel and hired Scotty Bowman.

Shero was an innovator and a great coach. Better than Punch?  Overall looking at his full career no, Punch won 4 Cups -  but for that time period he was more current and innovative and would have been fantastic for Buffalo or any team.   He was a better coach than Crozier, Floyd, and Marcel.  Of those 3 I liked Crozier the best.

I've got nothing to add here but given my screen name I thought I had to get something posted.

And I remember Shero getting fired by the Rangers because his drinking problem got out of control.  He was spiking his coffee during practices.

I’m fairly certain the switch to road whites was the NHLs so I don’t see it happening any time soon.

I think you're right but it still bums me.  I think the whites with the blue across the shoulders look sharp.

Once upon a time the NHL and NBA required home teams to wear white.  (Old timers like me remember the AFL rule was home colors, road whites; the NFL has always let the home team choose, which is why the Cowboys are rarely seen in blue jerseys.)  Now that everyone's in the shirt-selling business, I guess someone decided there's an advantage to colors at home.  Me, I don't see it.

    Interesting article from Vogl.

    I’ll Highlight his depth chart

Center - Jack, Mitts, Sobotka, Larsson and Asplund - Says we need to trade to get a 2nd line center, but Spezza (UFA) for a year or two?

LW - Skinner, Olofsson, Sheary, Erod, Girgensons, Wilson - Vogl thinks we are set here. I’m not so sure.

RW - Reinhart, KO, Thompson, Nylander - Thin is an understatement. Vogl expects at least one big time UFA signing.

LD - Dahlin, McCabe, Scandella, Pilut and Hunwick - Gardner to expensive and Benn, but not much to upgrade with in the FAs.

RD - Risto, Montour, Bogo, Nelson & Borgen - Suggests Myers or Stralman if Risto traded. Thinks Borgen needs more time in Rochester.

His conclusion is to sign Dzingel and a RW.  Can’t argue with that.

A question from someone (me) who doesn't see the Sabres play often:

I see a lot of names here and many of them at one time or another had decent or better reputations attached to them.  I'm not pretending this is a Stanley Cup winner, but there appears from a distance to be enough talent named to be serious about the playoffs.  With the right coaching and attitude there shouldn't be tailspins and extended losing streaks that mean the season is over in February.  (Look at ROR; in Buffalo he was nobody and in St. Louis he turned into a superstar in the playoffs.).

Am I just wrong and most of these guys are mediocre stiffs?  Or with coaching is there enough talent here to stay in the hunt until April?  (And I'm only talking about making the playoffs.)

I also notice this posted excerpt doesn't list G's.  Is that the problem?

  6. What St. Louis is doing this year and what Nashville did a couple years ago prove that in the NHL if you make the playoffs you can get hot and anything can happen.  And notwithstanding the Sabres (and occasional exceptions elsewhere) it seems most teams have some kind of shot at the playoffs.  I just don't believe either of those things in the other sports.

  7. I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe.  I want to believe. . . . . . . . .

They should go back to a 1-8 playoff seeding too, so Toronto isn't stuck playing the 3rd best team in the entire league, the Buffalo Sabres, in the 1st round.

There's one problem that's already been fixed.

Only 1 hockey game but used save coupons on back of milk cartons and go to 2-3 Braves games a year sitting in the oranges, man those were nose bleeds!

I'd forgotten about that!  The Braves had to push really hard for attendance in those days.

CBA is ten years ending after 2021/22 season.

Seattle expansion draft will follow the 2019/20 season.

I was looking at Capfriendly, and we are in an interesting situation for next off-season. Bailey, Malone and Baptiste will be regular RFAs, which explains their one year deals. However, Girgensons, Larsson, McCabe, ERod, Baloo, Ullmark, O’Regan and Wedgewood will all be RFAs also but with arbitration rights. I can see as few as 2 players back from that group.

Our only UFAs after next season are Pommers and Moulson who won’t be back.  We also have 14 players signed for 2019-20 (50 mill).

If I had to guess after looking at the cap situation for this coming season and the year after Jbot is giving these guys 1 year prove it deals.  Are you NHL players? If not they’ll be gone      by next season except maybe Malone, who is really in his 2nd pro season.  I also think Jbot has an eye toward the Seattle expansion.  I expect Smith might be a slightly different case.  I think Jbot likes what he did last year and may sign him for two years to push out his arbitration year.

Thanks.  This is helpful info for people like me who don't drill down.  I also appreciate the no-snark attitude.
