  1. I guess the good news is that they catch them without Eric Staal. The bad news is that Skinner is on fire (well not bad for both my fantasy teams). Skinner had a hat trick and I believe a total of six goals last week.

Skinner is on a hot streak for sure and since coming back from injury, Khudobin has been red hot in goal with the Canes on a 4 game winning streak. This is really a team that should be jockeying for ping pong balls, but because the Metro sucks, are in the hunt. It took that 4 game win streak to crawl back over .500 on the season.

  2. I think the deal is good for Buffalo. Do you really think the return would have been any better closer to the deadline? I don't think so. Vanek was a goner after the season. You guys got a quality player to sign or flip later and a 1st and 2nd.

All that being said, you still have to have some veterans around or you end up like the Oilers.

  3.

My former beer fridge is out in the garage, but I haven't used it in quite awhile. It's covered with Sabres stickers and magnets, FWIW. It used to live at the end of my couch.

Funny, mine has Canes stickers and magnets on it.

I really have thought about doing the home brew thing.

  4. I get in trouble at the house when I'm out in the garage working on the cars, or sometimes when the weather is beautiful this time of the year, just sitting and reading a book. The beer fridge is in the garage. I guess simply having something that you call a beer fridge may be a sign.

This is day 5 of no beer. Daddy wants a beer, but daddy looks a lot like Homer these days.

It makes a differrence. I went on the wagon for the whole month of August save one weekend when I had an out of town wedding. Pretty much no beer and eating sensibly for one month and I lost 18 lbs. I'm drinking beer again, but not nearly as much as I was before and I'm down 25 lbs at the almost two month mark.

That's promising. It's hard when I really do enjoy a few beers.

  6. Doing that while at the same time antagonizing those same obnoxious fans through scoreboard antics and prick-ish staff and ushers always seemed contradictory and bush league to me

You'll get no argument from me on that one. It has been bad at times, to the point where some Canes fans wouldn't attend the Sabres games. I have done my level best to urge those fans to suck it up and go, but like you said, it is what it is.

Back to beer. I haven't had one this week. I'm trying to lay off and lose some weight. I have put on about 30 lbs of beer belly in the last few years and it's time to do something about it. Several a night over time will do that. Game days will be a different story. I'll be picking up some good seasonal beer for Friday.

  7. True, I expect a low key affair so I figure it's a good time to bring the 8 and 5 year old to a game.

In the past, the Sabres at Canes game seemed to bring out the worst in some fans on both sides. This isn't just conjecture, the staff will tell you they have to put on extra security. Things have calmed down some in the last year or two to the point where they will schedule pre-season games. I guess that's progress.

Now, the Pens have the most hated visiting fanbase spot. It's when all the Terrible Towels and Roethlisberger jerseys come to visit and be generally obnoxious. It must be something to do with what occurs after an Eastern Conference Finals appearance.

  8. I really enjoy the Aviator beers, I like to stop by their tasting room in the old train depot in Fuquay on the odd Saturday afternoon Home Depot run. Have you been to the Aviator Smokehouse? It's top notch BBQ

I haven't been, but I know it's a trip I need to make. I have a daughter at NC State, so I'm up that way occasionally other than hockey games. I want to try out the tasting room.

I'll be there with the wife and kids, so no raping, pillaging or baby eating for me...................this time.

You wouldn't really resort the the raping, pillaging, or baby eating in the pre-season would you? The babies aren't even ripe yet.

  9. All I know is that this time of the year is my favorite time of the year, for both of my passions, hockey and beer drinking. Hockey season is starting and proper beer drinking season has kicked off. Gone is all the fru-fru "spring and summer" beers, and Octoberfest beers and winter beers are getting in gear. Real beer that is dark like God intended it to be and not fruity or needing a slice of orange in it.

Had a nice local Aviator brew, Oktoberbeast last weekend at Sammy's Tap and Grill in Raleigh. Good stuff.

  10. Rask said to be getting a deal for $56M/8. That'd be 1 of the 2 or 3 biggest cap hits for a goalie int he league.

Don't the Bruins know how to build a hockey team? We here in Buffalo know that you can't devote that much $$ to a goalie.

    Wow!

    @Real_ESPNLeBrun

Hearing that Claude Giroux and the Flyers are close to agreeing to an 8-yr deal worth north of $8 M a year...

Whew. Glad we got that lockout and lost half a season so the owners could get this spending under control and be saved from themselves.

Hey, I found a word that you can't use here. It is a technical term for the general area between the butt cheeks.

  11. Ehrhoff and a 2nd for Jeff Skinner. Would JR ever do that?

My opinion of Ehrhoff is that he is a good #1/great #2 defenseman. He was a +6 logging the hardest minutes on a horrible Sabres squad last year. He's solid as a rock in his own end and would be awesome QBing Staal, Staal, Semin, and (whoever the Canes 5th PP player would be?).

He's on a great contract with most of the money already paid up front. 4 mil cap hit.

I don't know about JR, but it would have to be tempting. Getting Ehrhoff fixes the defense for a few years. Put him with the rest of the current Canes D, and you get a respectable squad. Losing Skinner is tough, but I really don't like his contract and JR needs some flexibility. No offense, but if Buffalo is rebuilding, that 2nd is going to be closer to a 1st than a 3rd.

It would give Buffalo a young forward going forward. It may be a good hockey deal both ways, but each fanbase would bitch that both sides got robbed.

  12.

As for Carolina, I just looked at your defense... dear god wtf? I think Sekera may be your best defender now. Your GM should have been drafting defense instead of more forwards.

    Ya think?

JR has made it known in the past that he doesn't like to draft defensemen with high picks because they take a long time to develop and by the time they do, they are ready to go to free agency. He would rather take forwards because they are a more immediate impact. That still leaves a need to find those defensemen somewhere. It is too costly to sign a good defenseman in free agency. That only leaves the trade route. What team wants to trade away a good defenseman unless he is on a bad contract?

He did take Ryan Murphy high last year, but at his size, he isn't going to be a crease clearer or an attention getter from a physical point of view. He is another "puck mover" and the Canes need a "puck stopping" defenseman occasionally. Murphy will hopefully eventually be in the top 6, but he was in juniors still last year because he wasn't old enough for AHL duty. He came up to the big club for a few games on an emergency call up, and didn't look bad.

JR also has a habit of trading 2nd round draft choices for other players who were drafted a few years earlier but who haven't exactly lit the world on fire, like Riley Nash (drafted 21st overall by the Oilers in 2007) and Bobby Sanguinetti (drafted 21st overall by the Rangers in 2006). Nash ended up with the Canes as an overslotted 3rd line center last year and Sangs can't make the squad with our pitiful defense. In my opinion, JR likes to find too many band aids and not a cure. Sekera is another nice pickup, and yet, another band aid in my opinion.

  13.

Right but between, Hackett, Enroth, Ullmark, Makarov, Lieuwen, and the guy we took in this draft Petersen, I would guess the thought in management is that one of these guys will be our new starter at some point. The first 4 have a good shot at becoming solid NHL GT's.

That's why I said "from the outside looking in". I didn't know your organization's depth at goalie. Canes have no depth at any position in the system, especially in goal. Justin Peters was supposed to be the guy, but he keeps crapping the bed every time he gets a chance.

I guess you only need one goalie at any one time, but 12 forwards.

  14. While I'm really not familiar with Compher, it is puzzling that the pick wouldn't have been the best goalie in the draft, who had slipped a few spots and was available. I really thought that was what the trade was for at the time. With the reports of Miller being shopped, it kind of makes sense, from the outside looking in.

There was speculation among some Canes fans that Fucale would be scooped up if available at that pick, and nobody thought he'd still be on the board.
