  1. All I can say about tonight's game is WOW. It was really looking like Ottawa was going to beat us yet AGAIN, but the boys some how pulled it out. The boys are back!

Cheers to the crowd this evening. I was back here in Rochester watching on tv and almost felt like I was at the game at some points because the place got so loud. LETS GO BUFFALO!

At the Aud, Sabres' goalie Clint Malarchuk miraculously survives a goal-crease collision with St. Louis' Steve Tuttle that leaves his jugular vein sliced open by Tuttle's skate and the hearts of Sabres' fans in their throats. Nine fans faint in their seats as a circle of blood on the ice gets bigger and bigger with each beat of Malarchuk's heart. The Sabres lose to the Blues 2-1, but no one really cares. All fans care about is whether the Sabres' new goalie is OK ? and he is after emergency surgery at Buffalo General Hospital. As the ambulance raced toward the hospital, Malarchuk asked paramedics, "Can you have me back for the third period?"

In his second game in a Buffalo sweater, Miroslav Satan scores his first goal as a Sabre in a 3-2 loss at Florida. That sweater bore number 81, the first player in team history to wear it. The loss started a six-game winless streak that delayed the clinching of the Northeast Division championship a little longer than anyone wanted. For the record, the team's struggles late in the regular season included two shutout losses to Ottawa, whom the Sabres defeated in the first round of the playoffs. :)

I was 2 years old when the Malarchuk incident happened, so I obviously couldn't see it, or at least can't remember seeing it live. Just reading that description of what happened makes me squirm.

If anyone has any video of the incident online, I would greatly appreciate seeing it.

At the Aud, Gilbert Perreault takes a pass from Mike Foligno and beats Devils' goalie Alain Chevrier with a quick shot from the slot, the 500th goal in his National Hockey League career. All, naturally, came as a Sabre.

The Sabres trade Curtis Brown and Andy Delmore to San Jose for Jeff Jillson and a ninth-round pick in 2005. They also acquire Mike Grier from the Caps for Jakub Klepis.

Geeez, how bad does that Jillson trade look now? I'd love to have the two guys we let go right about now. Wow...

  4. The HSBC was absolutely electric during that shootout. I haven't seen that place rocking like that in a looonggg time. The place was about to explod when Miller made the final save on Alfredsson. "USA!! USA!! USA!!" Miller not being on Team USA is simply an injustice to all American hockey fans

In a game against the California Golden Seals in California, Gilbert Perreault records the very first hat trick by a Sabre. Buffalo wins, 4-2. Two days later in Vancouver, the Sabres win 6-1 to finish their three-game western swing undefeated. In the first western trip in franchise history, back in late October and early November, the Sabres went 0-3 and were outscored 17-5. The franchise was finding its bearings. From January 14 until February 4, the Sabres were 6-1-3. After 10 losses in their next 13 games, the Sabres finished the season 8-3-4, 15 games under .500, in fifth place in the East Division and, of course, out of the playoffs. But all in all it was a very respectable first season in the National Hockey League.

    January 29, 1977

In the midst of the Blizzard of ?77, only 14 Sabres have made a flight to Montreal for a game with the Canadiens. The Sabres still find a way to tie the powerhouse Habs, 3-3, at the Forum. And Voice of the Sabres Ted Darling, snowbound back in Buffalo, still finds a way to broadcast the game: while watching it on TV, he does play by play over the phone from his living room.

    January 29, 1997

Dominik Hasek makes perhaps the iconic save of his Sabre career, sprawling across the crease and stabbing Mario Lemieux's sure goal in his glove. Referee Rob Shick adds the unforgettable postscript, peeling apart The Dominator's glove to convince his eyes that what they just saw is true: the puck is really in there. The Sabres win, 3-1, at Marine Midland Arena, to close to within two points of the Penguins for first place in the Northeast Division, a division the Sabres would go on to win going away. The win starts a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Sabres.

    January 29, 2000

The Sabres lose 1-0 at Boston, the second time in as many days they are involved in a 1-0 game. It's the first time in 10 years that the team has been involved in consecutive 1-0 games.

Does anyone have access to the clip of this save by the dominator? I can't believe I don't remember which one this is, which is why I'd desparately like to see it.

  6. PA, how can you forget a little tidbit of history on Jan 27, 1991?

Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood misses 47 yard field goal to win Super Bowl XXV. The missed kick gives the NY Giants a 20-19 victory and serves as a harbinger of things to come for the Bills in the Super Bowl. Fans across WNY run to local watering holes to drink the pain away.

Wide right... now THAT is cruel.

  7. i understand the buffalo fan's instinctual need to be negative and bitchy, but this is a little over the top. but rather than duke it out with you point-by-point, i would just add two points.

    1. we haveone of the top records in the league while playing a bunch of very young players who are only going to get better. this gives me optimism about our future as a real cup contender. will it happen this year? maybe, maybe not, but we damn near won it all a few years ago with a team that is not as good as this one.

    2. briere was one of the top scorers in the league when healthy and will be back before the playoffs. i understand if you don't want to count him as a "top-50 scorer," because technically he isn't. but he sure as hell is a top-50 player.

Well said. We're 30-15-3 and we've been without Danny Briere, our BEST PLAYER, for almost 75% of the season. When he returns, the Sabres are going to be 10 times better and that much more prepared for the stretch run. Hopefully you add on a quality skater in return for Marty, and we're talking about a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.

Everyone keeps talking about how badly we're out-matched vs Ottawa, well, the games we played against Ottawa were in a very tough stretch for this team. Can't wait till Feb. the 4th to see how well we matchup at this point of the season.

  8. Spot on, Corp. Miller's going to be a star in this league. His not being on the Olympic team is just a pure joke.

Max was probably the best Sabre on the ice again tonight, too bad he botched that clean breakaway.

It was also good seeing the guys stick up for Connoly [Drury and Grier in particular] after that hit... which WAS a good clean hit...

  9. Myself and a few buds went to the game tonight, and boy, did we pick a good game to go to. Other than a few moments in the 2nd period when Tampa was really putting on the heat, it was total domination from Buffalo. The score could have easily been 6-1, but Burke made some key saves for the 'Ning to keep it close.

18,032 in attendance if I remember correctly. So a bit short of the sellout, but the atmosphere was amazing. Buffalo, and Western NY for that matter [i'm from Rochester] are really into this team.

Too bad the NJD and PHX games are sold out, otherwise I'd certainly be making the drive for those too.

  10. Guys, we're not going to win them all. I think some of us, and even myself at times, have gotten spoiled by how well the Sabres have been playing lately. Florida clearly has our number this year, but luckily, it doesn't look like they'd be a team that we'd run into during the playoffs.

The absence of Briere has hurt a bit, but a majority of this recent hot-streak was played without him.

Darcy needs to pull the trigger and trade Marty.... BUT, perhaps in return for a forward. I really feel we need a guy to step in and replace Briere and Dumont while they are gone. I'm sure St. Louis would dump one of their forwards in a trade, seeing as how they have nothing to play for. Maybe a Doug Weight? Scott Young?
