  1. Oilers over the Hurricanes.  Got 7 of the 8 series correct, best I've ever done in the first round.  I have a feeling if Bobrovsky is on his game then Florida will eliminate Toronto (I picked Toronto for that series).  Should be some fun match ups in the second round.

He has been bad for 3 years, since 2019.  I’m sure if you massage his numbers enough and make them look ok, but he is just plain bad.

Not to say that is the Sabres only problem, it’s not, but Hutton has not performed as an adequate backup for a long time.

Fair enough.  Believe me, I'm not a fan of his.  I'm just trying to point out to those that think that goaltending is the issue that it is not the core issue.  We have more talent (on paper) than we've had in years past and our production is worse.  That points to system issues and if our fragile roster has no confidence then a good coach would know how to get them inspired.  It is his job to ensure the team is ready to play, crap when you come out first game of the season and say you weren't going to coach that night then you should be fired because that is your job!

So are you saying that you think Hutton might be an alright goalie?

I think he is an okay backup.  If you remove the first game played (1/14) where the team seemed to sleepwalk through that whole game and he had a .815 sv% then that certainly adjusts his overall sv%.  Again, I'm taking the subset up to Ullmark's injury and the post COVID pause debacle:

    1/18 - .955

    1/19 - .950 (back to back)

    1/31 - .889

    2/16 - .913

2/25 - .840 (replaced Ullmark) This is the game that the wheels started coming off.

Again, he is an okay backup.  The team's problems go beyond goaltending - it's a problem but is not as big of a problem as the system is, IMHO.

  4. Bylsma should've been on the hot seat at the beginning of last year when he said the team didn't practice 3-v-3.  It is part of the game now and you didn't practice it!?  That was the first sign indicator.  Additionally, I truly believe a coach needs to be able to make adjustments quickly and anticipate the other teams strategy.  I don't think Dan does that well enough during the game.  I don't question his hockey mind just his in game abilities and the way the team prepares before a game.

  5. Making a statement to young Jack and the rest of the team.  I'm fine with that.

50 games left.  Need 13 points out of each 10 games.  Let's see how the next 10 go.

No offense but we said let's see what we are like at the end of December.  We keep waiting to see how the next games go and then waiting again.  I'm sorry - I've seen enough to know that right now that the system is not working.

  6. I don't think it is a roster issue as some here have indicated.  The guys that have been brought in have had really good seasons prior to their Sabres arrival (Kane and Moulson) and some had good years prior to DD (Girgensons and Ennis - although Ennis may be due to his injuries).  These guys can score - heck they are scoring on the power play so they know how to beat a goalie...  5 on 5 is the problem, which means that the players are not creating the right chances and this is partially affected by the system.  How many times are they shooting right at the goalie - into his chest?  Now, how many times are they shooting while the goalie is moving?  They need to start opening space (system) to be able to pass into opportunities and get the goalie moving.

Also, seeing the 4th line out there right after the Reinhart goal made me cringe.  This is all on Dan.

  7. Said no one Never. I know it's early, but this little thread continues to weave its way through Sabre lore.

I know it is a reoccurring theme with the team but we've turned the roster over and new coaches in place... you would figure it would've been addressed.  Both power play chances tonight looked unpracticed.  I understand it's preseason and chemistry, but the same is true for Carolina and their chance had 5 shots on it... some good chances.  Ours had none.

  8. Didn't watch the game, but did see that he provided a nice screen on the Ristolainen goal.   Wish some more would do that.

Yes he did a good job on the first goal.  Plus, he was in good position most of the game - where he needed to be defensively too.  He just isn't strong enough on his skates yet.  He needs to work on battling along the boards, that's his biggest weakness.

  9. Up until 2 weeks ago, I was the type that was willing to just let things play out.  Apathetic about a loss or a win.  Now that we are approaching the end and I see that Arizona is encroaching on our position (freaking Darcy!), I'm now hoping for a last place finish. However, it was nice to see that team last night out work the opponent (I won't say out played because there were times the Hawks were setup like a power play in our zone during 5-on-5 play).  If the team plays like they did last night with the addition of E. Kane and the return of Z next year, this team is going to be entertaining to watch.  Playoffs?  Doubtful, I think our blue line needs more maturing but definitely entertaining.

  10. Ok - I'll flip this around to posing the same question for those that are academically benefiting with their minds rather than their bodies.

Should students who are attributing to research papers that are generating money for the school also be paid?  Are they not also being exploited for their minds?

  11. Ok - I don't like the thread title at all. Apparently, our short term memories get the better of us because I seem to recall that GMTM wasn't happy with the performance of the team a month ago and stated such. He felt the team could play better and eluded to he belief that the coach wasn't getting the most of the team. Lo and behold, the team has started to go on a tear since that came out... hmmmm.... It doesn't sound like they are ruining GMTM's plans, instead it sounds like they are finally living up to his plans.
