  1. 7:00pm. Join us here for game discussion, or in the chatroom.

I sense a major event occuring tonight... Whether it be a monumental whooping, monumental collapse, monumental screwjob, or monumental incident, there's some unfinished business from last year.

I know what you mean, I have the same kind of portentous uneasiness myself. Something is going to happen tonight, but I don't know what, either. I guess I'll maybe have to think about possibly tuning in, just to be sure. :D

  2. I was at the Bruins-Sabres game a couple of weeks ago and we rolled to a 6-2 win without even playing particularly good hockey. I think this is a good opponent to "get back to work" with. I wouldn't even worry at all about it being on the road. The Fleet Center was a virtual crypt for most of the game except for all of the Sabres fans in attendance.

Unless we really lay an egg, this could be another 4-1 or 5-2 type games.

  3. all the atlanta goals came off of turnovers or bad bounces. none can be pinned directly on miller. you could tell that he was taking it hard though after the game... usually when miller gets pissed he comes out firing. hopefully we'll get another streak started against boston

Atlanta must have cashed in all of their "lucky bounce" tokens for the season, as far as I could see. It was just one of those games where you are going to have to work for everything you get.

As far as I'm concerned, this game was awesome. This was the kind of game where a lesser team could have easily have folded it in and lost 5-1 or something. The fact that we were able to put 4 goals in net when very little was going our way was a credit to how hard this team works out there. Every goal the Thrashers scored seemed to be the result of a bounce that served up the shot on a plate. What are you going to do? And, despite it all, we still get 1-point out of it.

  4. i was hoping that we'd win tonight, but it was just not to be... Right from the getgo, the bounces weren't going our way... But the hockey gods had our backs, for that goal that was scored on the "offsides" was not going to be the GWG. hell, we didn't even lose this game. 10-0-1 with 21 points heading into november is downright perfect. Time to reset, and use the 5 days to focus on boston.

Man, that was just it. For as many bounces as we had go against us, we still managed a point. If this is what it takes to "beat" us, then I'm not complaining. You are going to have nights like this where you can't really buy a break, and even so, we put up 4 goals, forced a shootout, and still got a point. I'm glad the talk of this record is done, and hopefully they can get that out of their system. The fact that the Amerks lost to a winless Syracuse team last night was definitely a bad harbinger.

  5. I smell a loss coming on. :( It's bound to happen soon enough.

Dude, I know it is a Western New York's sports fan's natural tendency to think this way, but this team just seems to continue to defy the definition of a Buffalo sports team. It is not that they are immune from let-downs, but this team is playing with the kind of focus and purpose that we always see elsewhere.

I've got about 6 guys coming over to watch this game tonight on the SXRD since the game is in HD here in Rochester (HD-Net 1050, I think), so either way, we'll have a good time. Let's go, Buffalo.

I kind of like how they call the Buffalo PP inept. True they didn't score, but they moved the puck well and got some really good chances. While the Canes PP did score it was on an extended 5 on 3, and the Canes often looked lost on the PP. But, the Carolina press probably just looks at the scoresheet at the end of the night

I thought Carolina's PK was also pretty good. They were aggressive all night and never really allowed us to set up in the zone. It seemed like every time we dumped the puck in on the PP, Carolina jumped on it and cleared it.

  7. Lots of calls in the game last night, and some that were missed, but since we won, it is a bit of a non-issue.

One thing that really impressed me in last night's game was how good the team skated in the 3rd period and in OT. After a 2nd period where the Canes outplayed us, we came out skating in the 3rd and I was surprised we didn't net one.

Good start to the season for the Sabres, but like the Bills, they have got to stop making penalties.

  8. I can't wait for this one. I went out to watch the game last night, and damn if Edmonton didn't pick up a nice win. I think they have a very good chance to win that series and advance to the Finals. My son has hockey practice from 1 to 2, so I hope there aren't any red lights on the way home. ;)

    Let's go, Sabres.

  9. Interesting that the article mentions one of Carolina's weaknesses as getting off to slow starts in games, yet fails to mention that Buffalo has scored first in every playoff game, but one this season as an advantage.

That could be a huge factor in this entire series if Buffalo continues to get out to fast starts and gets to play with the lead. I think one way to beat the Sabres is to get them down early.

  10. I know I said "don't blame the refs", after the last game, but the officiating in that first period was indefensible. I'm usually pretty level-headed about this, but even I'm shaking my head. Though, even if they gave us extra penalties, we'd just fritter our power play away. That last power play at the end of the first period was ugly.

  11. I really think that this game is crucial for us. I think we definitely have to come out and score first and keep the pressure on the Senators. I do worry that if the Sens win tonight, the "choke" chatter is going to start ratcheting up, and not losing this series is going to start to become an issue.

In some sense, you almost wish we had lost one of the first 2 games in Ottawa and swept at home to go 3-1 instead of going up 3-0 and losing game 4. It seems like the whole issue of "pressure" and "choking" wouldn't exist, at all.

  12. There is plenty of criticism for the Sabres' play on the boards. From what I seem to understand, if your team plays poorly, than the officials must have been good. I mean, there's no possible way that the Sabres can play like crap AND the officials can suck, right?

The Sabres were bad last night. The officials were awful. Emery was excellent. We still only lost by a goal.

Am I allowed to complain about God Bless America being sung instead of the national anthem? How about complaining about the knuckleheads that booed the Canadian anthem? Do criticisms of these things mean I think the Sabres played well and were "screwed" by Ronin Tinin or some drunk college kids? Sorry...Forget I mentioned anything BUT how bad the Sabres were last night.

Again, I haven't gotten to see the game, yet, but I was getting the feeling that some people here were "blaming" the loss on the refs. Usually, if the refs are calling a bad game, that goes both ways, though, right? We, as fans, often turn an unwitting blind eye to those bad calls that may favor us, so we see a poorly called game as only affecting us. My logic is just that if the refs were awful, they were awful for both teams, and the difference last night appears to have been Emery over Miller. If that is the case, then it is fine to say that the officiating sucked, so long as the stellar play of Emery is also acknowledged.

  13. I hate to sound like a jerk... And again - i was at work all night so i did not get to watch the game, just listen on the radio... But after every game You guys have complained about the refs - i hate to say it, but you only look at the non-calls that hurt your team, you recieved one more power play than Ottawa, and it still didnt help.

I agree. All I've seen after every loss at every board is complaints about the officiating. That doesn't put the puck in the net or send a wide open shot wide of the net. The Sabres can and have played more disciplined than to give up that many penalties. So far as I have heard/read, the game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd. That means we had 20 minutes to close out the series and we didn't.

  14. Was out all night and have the game on TiVo, again, but after reading here, I might wait till tomorrow night to give it a watch. All I'll say is that I hate when teams complain about the refs after a loss. I haven 't seen the game, so I'm not sure how bad it was, but in general, I am not a fan of that reaction, win or lose.

We couldn't expect to sweep this team, so best to just move on to Ottawa, at this point, no?

  15. Emery with another close call. Ugh, I hate these games, because I have seen the team that seems to dominate lose these games. We definitely need to avoid any more penalties. That cost us the lead. Let's go, guys!

This team is unreal. I'm thinking they are a team of destiny now.

    Up 3-0!!!!

  16. I don't like the way this game is now unfolding. This game is starting to really look like a game that Ottawa is going to steal from us. We've had chance after chance on Emery and either hit posts, shot wide, or he's made a great save. It seems like these games when you out-play the other team and there is a lid on the net always wind up going to the other team.

We've played well and had tons of chances and failed to convert. That will come back to bite you in the Playoffs, and I got a feeling we are going to be bitten by that unfortunate bug in OT. Just a hunch, though.

  17. Yeah, Ottawa appears to be content to just keep firing from the outside and hoping for a rebound or deflection. The posts have been Emery's friend tonight.

As Kevin and Rob were just saying, Ottawa is going to come out and probably throw their best 20 minutes of hockey at us in the third. The big thing we have to do is limit turnovers in the neutral zone/defensive zone and avoid penalties.

More than anything, they are going to have to be ready for everything and anything, and be ready to counter whenever we get a chance.

  18. This Senators team looks absolutely listless, and are skating like they are stuck in 2nd gear. Buffalo is skating like a team possessed and Emery can not withstand this kind of pressure for long. The Sens' veterans are taking dumb penalties, and the one on Redden cost them a goal. That cross-check by Redden is very telling on where this team's head is at.

The last thing the Sens want to do is get behind in this game and let this crowd feed off of it. Only a few bounces and breaks are keeping this game from being 2-0 or 3-0 right now. That being said, it is early and only a one goal game.

  19. Man, are you kidding me with Miller, tonight?!?! He has to be closing in on 45 saves in this game. This is just wave after wave after wave of Senators now, and he is stood tough in the pipes. The rest of this team has got to give him some help with at least one offensive push.

  20. Yeah, we have put very little pressure on Ottawa since the second goal. No way is this lead going to hold, we need at least one more goal to have a chance.

SOG by period for Buffalo 9 4 2.

for Ottawa 15 17 6 (they have as many SOG's in 1st period as we do in the whole game)
