  1. I actually like the message this is sending to the team. Regardless of how bad they’ve been at times they’re not far from the playoffs.

Botterill wants to change the culture and this is the kind of move that says we should be competitive and the organization believes in what they’re building.  That’s how I see this move. Make the playoffs and your smart for believing in your team. Selling when your this close sends a message that they’re trying to reverse.

  2. The Pham interview places more blame on ROR than Eichel and goes far enough to sound like ROR was petty and even jealous

Wasn’t that the rumor that got him shipped out of Colorado? He was jealous of the attention Duchene got when he felt he was more deserving? While he may have arguably been correct in both situations in a team sport and in a leadership role you cannot let that affect your game or your relationships with teammates.

  3. Does anyone know when a team in the NHL has traded away a top prospect in their organization, a young core type of player and a #1 for one hockey player straight up? Also, who was the player in return and what were the general feelings about the trade at that time?

I’m asking because it seems like those were the only trade proposals that many people would have accepted and I don’t remember any.

  4. As long as he can give us a bit better than Lehner, his locker room presence will will make up for any "overpayment" if he's 3 years 4mil per. Supposedly he's a real good guy, a team guy, and I'd imagine would mesh well with Ullmark.

    .

If he can give us Lehner productivity and add in stopping every third shootout attempt we can probably pick up several wins right there.

  5. I think ROR brings a lot on the ice but if he is traded then I think people will need to re-evaluate what kind of teammate and “leader” he is. It would be the second time in his career he would have been traded with concerns about how he coexisted with the teams star players. If he is the assets Botterill used to upgrade this team I’m all for it.

  6. I look at the Kane trade and think Buffalo will get back three pieces.

1st piece - 1st rd pick, good prospect or good NHL player

2nd piece- 2nd rd pick, decent prospect or average NHL player

3rd piece- conditional first or second based him resigning.

Personally I could care less about draft picks and I want hockey players that will help this team this year and in the next few years. NHL draft picks can take so long to develop.

Anything less than that return and I’ll be disappointed.

  7. I just don't think it would have happened as you say. Risto is very cold when he plays. Also I distinctly remember beating the Leafs twice and losing twice.

Just checked the box scores. Matthews scored 2 goals against buffalo in 4 games. If what you say happened why wasn't Matthews more effective? I don't think Risto would back down and I don't think he did. One of those goals was in the 5-2 game we won.

Risto didn't back down, because why would he care? Maybe if Martin had fought him but Matthews was and has been ineffective when playing buffalo.

What were Matthews point totals in the leafs two victories? What was Risto +/-? Also, Martin didn’t need to fight Risto with his reputation. He just got into his face. From that point on Risto was less effective and less physical.

  8. Ugh. I don't think the enforcer role exists anymore. Every player gets slashed, punched, speared, or hit in some illegal fashion. No one on the other team is worried about a punching bag jumping them for their deeds.

It’s not going away entirely. Edmonton has Lucic to protect McDavid, Toronto has Martin to protect Matthews and this past offseason Pittsburgh picked up Reaves to protect Crosby. I know Lucic may be a bad example because he can contribute and play hockey but the other teams realized they need to protect their prized assets. We have no one to protect Eichel or even Risto. Last year he was all over Matthews a few times, Martin got in his face, Risto backed off and Matthews took over.

  9. RFAs I would be interested in and what I would offer:

    Offer together:

Tyler Toffoli (RW - LAK) - 5 years, $23M (first and third)

    Martin Jones (G - LA) - 3 years, $2M (second)

This likely forces LA to choose one or the other. They probably choose Toffoli.

Jakob Silfverberg (RW - ANA) - 4 years, $14M (second)

Brandon Saad (RW - CHI) - 5 years, $25M (first and third)

Dougie Hamilton (D - BOS) - 6 years, $36M (two firsts, second and third)

Gustav Nyquist (RW - DET) - 4 years, $20M (first and third)

Vlad Tarasenko (RW - STL) - 2 years, $20M (four first) - I don't know why but go crazy. Don't think I would actually do this, but it might take something like this.

Mikkel Boedker (RW - ARZ) - 3 years, $9.5M (second)

Craig Smith (RW - NSH) - 3 years, $9.5M (second)

Alex Galchenyuk (C - MTL) - 3 years, $11M (second) make them prove they do value him in some way

Shane Prince (LW - OTT) - 2 years, $2.2M (no compensation)

Those including first-round compensation I would likely only do if Murray makes other big moves in free agency/trades before the RFA action picks up.

Before we go the offer sheet route I hope they have trade discussions. The rate on a goalie last year was a third so if there is any way we can trade a third for Jones or Talbot I would do it. Both LA and Rangers have cap issues and some FA/RFAs they need to lock up.

Also, I think Chicago will be very proactive to get rid of either Sharp or Bickell and maybe even both so they don't lose Saad this year. I'd take either or both for the right package.

I think going the trade route can be a win win scenario and build relationships with other GMS while the offer sheet would do the opposite.

  10. How many years later... Hodgson, Grigerenko.... Ha Ha Ha really. This whole disaster could have been avoided. If DR resigned Briere, letting Vanek go and getting compensation from Edmonton would have caused a rebuild not a tank. If I remember correctly the Sabres would have gotten 2 of Edmonton's first rounders as compensation and having difficulty filling in FAs with the new owner would not have been a problem.... Now because of DRs mismanagement, Sabre fans have had to suffer through at least 2 years of Tank Nation, probably one more next year all because centers were not valued. Reinhart who knows. I would take just one first ballot HOF, non of these are even close... maybe Reinhart but who knows, still really early.

Kinda like the Bills as they were going through revolving coaches and GMs... been a long time since they were in the playoffs let alone considered contenders. Sabres are getting there too. Better hope you are right about Reinhart or this team will continue to suck ala Edmonton.

I think we would have had four of Edmonton's first round picks. Over a $7 million cap hit.
  11. Moving goalposts, opinions based on how we feel at the moment. Did we get worse? Sure. But anyone could do that. Did we get anything close to reasonable value for what we gave up. No. But I guess that's okay with everyone.

pleas define reasonable value. I think that is where people differ. My expectations going into the day was:

    Flynn - nothing

    Mitchell - 6/7

    Neuvirth -3

    Stewart -2 maybe another pick/prospect

Based on that I think we did ok.

Next step in building the team is draft and free agency.

  13. I'm complaining Murray held out too long while other potential landing spots for Stewart made other deals. At deadline he had to settle for a pick three drafts from now. You are obviously satisfied with this mediocrity.

I think he did fine with Flynn, Mitchell and Neuvirth. If your argument is he held onto Stewart then a case can be made but once he did that he had to recover. Getting a second three years out is a good recovery. Just going off rumor reports they could have had a second or spooner from the Bruins. I know nothing of spooner but many on this board didn't speak very highly of him. Do you think he would have won that trade, Spooner for Stewart?
  14. Our best asset, Stewart, gets us a 2nd three drafts from now. That's bogus. TM misplayed his hand badly.

While it's certainly not exciting it is a second round pick. Reports earlier today was he was being offered a fourth. Would you have preferred a third this year? I get the frustration but I'll take the second over the third.
  15. Why does 'today' matter? Today, yesterday, tomorrow, Murray got bupkus. If the mission was to get something, congratulations, he got something. But he looks like he misplayed his hand badly holding Stewart and Mitchell to the end. We used to complain that Darcy overvalued his players. Well guess what Murray did today.

Oh, excuuuuuussse meeeee! Murray got PRECISELY bupkus!

Just curious, what return do you think Darcy would have received for Flynn, Mitchel, neuvirth and Stewart?
